A sweeping new wave of tariffs unveiled by President Donald Trump on Wednesday triggered a sharp selloff during the after hours of trading as the scope and scale of the trade duties exceeded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44616760/donald-trump-sets-reciprocal-tariffs-on-key-trade-partners-in-historic-policy-shock">Wall Street's worst-case expectations.</a>
The president framed the move as a long-overdue correction to decades of trade imbalance, instituting what he called a "reciprocal tariff rate," set at 50% of what trading partners charge the United States, but also factoring in non-tariff barriers like currency manipulation, value-added taxes and outright import bans.
While Trump had telegraphed his intention to "rebalance" U.S. trade policy, the specific duty levels, some of which reached into the mid-30% range with key trading partners, jolted investors.
Under the new framework, China, which Trump said imposes tariffs as high as 67% on American goods, will now face reciprocal U.S. duties of approximately 37%. The European Union, which applies a 39% combined rate including VATs, will be subject to a 20% U.S. tariff. Japan, with an estimated 46% trade barrier, now faces a 24% duty on exports to the U.S.
Canada and Mexico, two major trading partners, were notably excluded from the tariff program — a move that suggests Trump may be preserving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, at least for now.
The White House confirmed that new trade tariffs will take effect on April 9. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs Spark After-Hours Chaos: Index Futures Dive</h3>
The market&#8217;s reaction was swift and brutal. By 5:10 p.m. ET, futures on the S&amp;P 500 dropped 2.5%, while Nasdaq 100 futures fell 3.3%. Dow Jones Industrial Average contracts lost 1.4% and the Russell 2000 futures collapsed by 4.7%. 
Losses were broad-based. Every major sector of the S&amp;P 500 was in the red, with Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) and Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) down about 3%.
As risk appetite evaporated, gold prices climbed. Futures on the yellow metal gained 1.1%, extending their year-to-date advance as investors sought shelter from escalating geopolitical and trade tensions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tech Megacaps Bear the Brunt</h3>
The Magnificent Seven stocks, the market's dominant tech names, are on track to lose a combined $685 billion.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) was the biggest laggard, down 6.6% and projected to erase $221.7 billion in market value.
 Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) lost 4.7%, a drop equivalent to $127.2 billion. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) fell 5.1%, and Tesla Inc. Markets Reel As Trump's Tariffs Hit — Magnificent 7 Set To Shed Almost $700 Billion

Shares of Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) reversed midday Wednesday, closing up 5%, after it was reported that CEO Elon Musk would <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44611347/is-elon-musk-leaving-doge-role-trump-tells-cabinet-move-could-happen-soon-report">step back from his prominent role</a> in the Trump Administration in the coming weeks.
At last check, shares were down over 3.2% in after-hours trading. 
What Happened: Politico <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/04/02/trump-musk-leaving-political-liability-00265784">reported</a> that Trump told his cabinet that Musk could leave his administration soon. While Trump has publicly praised Musk&#8217;s actions leading the Department of Government Efficiency, political operatives and journalists believe Musk may be a liability to the administration.
For example, Musk reportedly invested over $20 million to defeat Democrat Susan Crawford in Tuesday&#8217;s Wisconsin Supreme Court election. 
Crawford won. 
Musk&#8217;s exit could also be due to his status as a special government employee, meaning he can only work 130 days each year. His position with the administration began in January.
The report was published midday on Wednesday; soon afterward, shares of Tesla rallied as investors—many of whom had wanted Musk to focus on the company he&#8217;s led since 2008 rather than politics—poured money into the carmaker.
Shares spiked over 6% in the hour following the report&#8217;s publication.
Musk, meanwhile, dismissed reports that he was leaving DOGE due to discord with other administration officials as &#8220;fake news.&#8221;

Investors&#8217; honeymoon was shortened when the company&#8217;s shares fell as much as 50% since Trump began his second term. Between Jan. 21 and March 21, Tesla was the second-worst-performing stock in the index.
The company experienced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44601458/teslas-european-sales-decline-for-3rd-consecutive-month-amid-china-competition-ceo-elon-musks-political-controversies">decline in sales</a> in recent months, perhaps due to Musk&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/25/01/43219015/elon-musk-faces-criticism-from-biographer-over-auschwitz-visit-he-truly-is-a-sociopath">actions on inauguration day</a> and his <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43914165/i-like-the-cars-its-musk-i-dont-like-former-elon-fan-dumps-both-teslas-and-cancels-cybertruck-order-to-boycott-elon-musk">polarizing political stature</a>. 
In particular, Tesla was hit particularly hard in European markets after Musk endorsed far-right parties in Germany and the United Kingdom.

The rising price <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/management/24/12/42444955/elon-musk-first-person-worth-400-billion-as-tesla-stock-hits-new-all-time-highs-how-2024-election-helped-could-lead-to-future-gains">helped boost the wealth</a> of CEO Elon Musk and may have helped boost the wealth of members of Congress.
Here's a look at members of Congress who bought and sold Tesla stock since the 2024 presidential election.
Congress Goes Shopping: Members of Congress can buy and sell stocks and options as long as they report the transactions within a given time limit. Congress trading has proven controversial in recent years with the potential of members having inside information from committee assignments and government contracts.

Why It's Important: Transactions involving Tesla stock since the election have mostly been from Greene and Gottheimer.
Greene, who was buying Tesla stock before the 2024 election, is a close Trump ally and holds a role in the Department of Government Efficiency alongside Musk. Her purchases likely won't be a huge surprise.
Gottheimer is one of the most active traders in Congress. Still, his role in the Democratic Party and ownership of Tesla stock since the election likely isn't a huge positive for his party, given the support Musk gets from the GOP.
Other Democratic members of Congress, like Johnson and McGarvey, sold their Tesla stock after Trump won the election and Musk became involved with the White House administration.
Cisneros bought Tesla stock in February and, several days later, spoke out in opposition to Tesla&#8217;s CEO.
"He basically bought himself the Presidency of the United States. I have no doubt he is the one calling the shots," Cisneros said of Musk in a February <a href="https://cisneros.house.gov/media/press-releases/icymi-rep-cisneros-forbes-elon-musk-bought-himself-presidency">interview </a>with Forbes.
McGarvey&#8217;s sale of Tesla stock in November after the election might also be worth watching since the Congress member was one of the top-performing stock pickers in 2024.
Price Action:&nbsp;Tesla stock is up 4.8% to $281.34 on Wednesday versus a 52-week trading range of $138.80 to $488.54. Tesla stock is down 25.9% year-to-date in 2025.
Tesla stock closed at $251.44 on Nov. 5 and opened for trading at $284.67 on Nov. 6 after&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41768178/donald-trump-defeats-kamala-harris-to-win-2024-election" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trump&#8217;s victory was confirmed</a>.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce sweeping new trade tariffs Wednesday afternoon, calling it "Liberation Day" — a symbolic push to tackle the ballooning U.S. trade deficit <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">with major global partners.</a>
Early reports suggest the new reciprocal tariffs could reach as high as 20% on a wide spectrum of imported goods. If confirmed, such measures would raise average U.S. tariffs to levels unseen in decades, stoking uncertainty across global supply chains and financial markets.
Trump is set to reveal more details during his scheduled address from the White House at 4 p.m. Wednesday. 
Markets will be watching closely, not just for the scope and scale of tariffs, but also for potential signals on diplomatic retaliation, corporate lobbying reactions, and the Fed's response.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Historic Deficit Fuels Protectionist Moves</h3>
In 2024, the U.S. imported $3.3 trillion in goods and exported only $2.06 trillion, resulting in a trade deficit exceeding $1.2 trillion, according to data from the International Trade Centre.
January and February 2025 marked the two largest monthly goods deficits ever recorded — $156 billion and $148 billion, respectively, hinting that U.S. businesses may have frontloaded imports in anticipation of higher future costs.
Top trading sources of U.S. imports include Mexico at $510 billion, China at $462 billion, and Canada $422 billion. Imports from Germany totaled $163 billion, predominantly in the automotive sector, while the European Union as a whole supplied $687 billion worth of goods.
Among product categories, automobiles top the list at $219 billion, followed by crude oil and petroleum at $174 billion.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Auto Industry In the Crosshairs</h3>
Trump has already enforced a 25% tariff on all foreign car imports. If an additional 20% reciprocal duty is introduced, foreign vehicles could face a combined 45% import tax.

Yet, a growing number of economists are increasing their subjective probabilities of a U.S. recession in 2025, especially if retaliatory tariffs hit U.S. exports and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">consumer sentiment deteriorates.</a>
This week, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44608617/jp-morgan-hikes-us-recession-odds-to-40-tariffs-create-a-dilemma-for-the-fed">JPMorgan raised U.S. probability odds </a>to 40%, up from 30% previously.
Uncertainty also clouds the Federal Reserve's path forward. Although markets currently expect three 25-basis-point rate cuts by the end of 2025, rising inflation risks from new tariffs could tie the Fed's hands.
The central bank may find itself squeezed between the need to support slowing growth and the imperative to fight resurgent price pressures, a policy dilemma reminiscent of the 1970s.

Trump's 'Liberation Day' Tariff Reveal Set For 4PM: What's At Stake

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares have fallen close to 30% over the past three months amid CEO Elon Musk&#8216;s political involvement with President Donald Trump.
What To Know: Tesla&#8217;s stock started off the year valued at close to $400, but the stock has faced heavy selling pressure. At the start of the year, Musk took on his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
DOGE has cut thousands of jobs since its start, aligning with broader efforts to reduce the size of the federal government. The agency has cut more than 121 contracts, valued at <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/doge-cuts-update-today-contracts-cancelled-2052525">over $350 million</a> since it&#8217;s inception.
Besides impacting the stock price, Musk&#8217;s role in the department may have also resulted in a rise of incidents of vandalism at Tesla properties across the nation. There have been multiple reports of throwing Molotov cocktails, damaging vehicles and occurrences of arson, per Reuters.
The company's sales have declined since the quarter began, with vehicle production reported at 362,615, down from 433,371 a year ago. Deliveries fell to 336,681 from 386,810 in the same period last year.
The stock is now rising slightly on Wednesday after Trump told affiliates that Musk will soon step down from his role as the <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/04/02/trump-musk-leaving-political-liability-00265784">head of DOGE</a>. While Trump remains pleased with the department and Musk&#8217;s performance, both men have decided that its time for Musk to focus on his business.

Wall Street extends gains on Wednesday, as investors remain resilient in their risk appetite despite the looming announcement of sweeping trade tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">by President Donald Trump.</a>
The president is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/wgmKYg-zK9o">scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET</a> on what he dubbed "Liberation Day," with expectations pointing to the imposition of tariffs around 20% on a broad range of goods.
The S&amp;P 500 is up 0.8%, aiming for what could become its third consecutive positive session. The Nasdaq 100 is also rebounding strongly, rising 1.1%, while small-cap stocks outperform large caps, with the Russell 2000 climbing 1.5%.
Nearly all sectors are in the green, except defensive consumer staples. Consumer discretionary and tech lead the way in performance.

The latest ADP Employment Report showed a stronger-than-expected pace of private payroll growth in March, reinforcing the resilience of the U.S. labor market despite the tariff-related uncertainties.
In corporate news, The New York Times reported that Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) submitted a last-ditch bid to acquire TikTok, the popular video app, as it nears an April deadline to separate from its Chinese owner or face a potential U.S. ban. Shares of the e-commerce giant rallied 2.4%.
The U.S. dollar index fell 0.3%, while gold and oil prices both gained 0.6%. Crypto sentiment remained positive, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) surging 2.5% to trade above $87,000.

"The time has come for Musk … it's a fork in the road moment."
Ives said the first-quarter deliveries are an example of the damage Musk is doing to Tesla.
"This continues to be a moment of truth for Musk to navigate this brand tornado crisis moment and get onto the other side of this dark chapter for Tesla with much better days ahead."
Ives said there could be darker times ahead for Tesla if Musk doesn't "get his act together."
The analyst sees autonomous driving as being one of the biggest transformations for the automotive industry in modern-day history with Tesla having the ability to be a leader.

If buyers maintain steady support, anticipate an initial bullish advance towards 109.86. Further bullish conviction may lead the price toward the next resistance at 110.73, with sustained buying efforts potentially pushing NVIDIA upwards to 111.70, ultimately targeting today&#8217;s bullish peak at 112.54.
If the bulls fail to maintain control above 109.12, anticipate bearish activity initially testing support at 107.51. A decisive breakdown at this level could invite further selling, pushing price action down toward 106.30. Extended bearish dominance would likely see an important test at 105.23, with today&#8217;s bearish scenario bottoming at 103.96.
Alphabet Inc Class A (GOOGL)
For Alphabet, the bulls need to stabilize and reclaim price action above the level at 155.59, pushing upward quickly to secure 156.61 as solid support. With continued bullish pressure, expect an advance higher towards 157.41, potentially accelerating further to today&#8217;s highest bullish objective at 158.54.
A failure to maintain 155.59 would trigger bearish momentum to the downside, initially targeting support at 154.95. How To Trade SPY, As Market Braces For Trump's Tariffs Plan

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) found itself on the wrong side of a historic surge in U.S. auto sales last month, with March vehicle sales slipping 8% year-over-year despite a broader industry boom.
According to JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman, U.S. light vehicle sales soared 14% as buyers rushed to dealerships ahead of steep new 25% tariffs on auto imports. This buying frenzy pushed the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) to an impressive 17.8 million &#8211; the highest since April 2021.
But for Tesla, it was anything but a victory lap.

While overall battery electric vehicle (BEV) penetration declined sequentially from 7.8% in February to 7.0% in March, Tesla's grip on the EV market weakened further. Brinkman notes that Tesla's U.S. BEV market share slid to 40.1% in March, a sharp drop from 44.9% in February and a significant decline from 50.7% a year ago. This contraction, as highlighted by Brinkman, underscores growing competitive pressure as legacy automakers and newer entrants chip away at Tesla's dominance.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pricing Pressures, Shifting Landscape</h2>
Tesla's decline comes as industry-wide vehicle prices remain resilient, even in the face of new tariffs. Brinkman points out that the average transaction price (ATP) for new vehicles hit $44,849 in March, up 1.4% year-over-year. Automakers largely held firm on pricing, leveraging the late-month demand surge to limit discounting. 
However, with tariffs expected to drive up costs across the board, Brinkman suggests that Tesla may have less flexibility to compete aggressively on price—especially as rivals ramp up production and expand their EV offerings.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Road Ahead</h2>
With tariffs set to push vehicle prices higher and overall auto sales projected to decline later in 2024, Tesla faces an increasingly challenging market. Brinkman emphasizes that while the company has historically relied on price cuts to stimulate demand, its effectiveness in maintaining market share is waning. 
Meanwhile, competitors like General Motors Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Hyundai Motor Company (OTCPK: HYMTF) /Kia gained market share in March, highlighting a shifting competitive dynamic in the EV space.
As the industry braces for the full impact of tariffs, Brinkman believes Tesla's ability to navigate these headwinds will be critical in determining its trajectory in the months ahead.
