After the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">Donald Trump administration</a> unveiled a new 15% tariff on imported vehicles, Toyota's stock surged 8%. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Math That Favors The Competition</h2>
Why? Because while Toyota gets away with a flat 15% hike, American automakers like Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>), and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) are staring down a tangled—and far more expensive—tariff mess.
Ford and GM aren't just dealing with the vehicle import tariff, pointed out Spencer Hakimian <a href="https://x.com/SpencerHakimian/status/1947821113792201034">on</a> X. They're also absorbing 50% more for steel and copper, 25% tariffs on parts from Canadian and Mexican factories, and a 55% hit on components sourced from China. 
Tesla, with its global supply web, doesn't escape the squeeze either.

What was meant to be a policy to bring auto jobs back to U.S. soil may end up doing the opposite &#8211; by raising input costs for American carmakers while giving Toyota a relatively cleaner ride. 
Ironically, Toyota's more consolidated and diversified supply chain, with more U.S.-based manufacturing than some of its American rivals, positions it to weather the new rules better.
The optics are stark: a Japanese automaker rallying on a trade policy designed to promote American industry, while Detroit's giants get slapped with compounding costs.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street Is Already Picking Sides</h2>
The market's response was swift. Toyota popped. Ford and GM barely budged. Tesla continues to navigate a different narrative altogether, but even it can't dodge the rising cost of essential materials.

Shares of US-listed Japanese stocks are trading higher after President Trump announced a trade deal with Japan.

As President Donald Trump announced 15% tariffs on Japanese imports after reaching an agreement with Japanese officials, shares of some of Europe's top automakers rallied, hoping for similar breakthroughs.
What Happened: Shares of German automakers Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAMXF#OTC">BAMXF</a>), Volkswagen AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VWAGY#OTC">VWAGY</a>) and Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MBGYY#OTC">MBGYY</a>) were all up 5% following the news.
Meanwhile, Stellantis NV's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) shares soared 7.1% in the European market as well. The Stoxx Europe autos index also rose 4.2% following the news, the report suggests.
However, Rella Suskin, Equity Analyst at Morningstar, according to a CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/23/autos-us-japan-trade-deal-raises-hopes-of-an-eu-tariff-breakthrough.html">report</a>, said it&#8217;s "impossible to predict" whether a similar breakthrough could be reached with other regions like the EU, but it could prove to be difficult as the "figures do not come close to Japan's commitment," Suskin said. 
"EU negotiators have also proposed removing their 10% duties on US car exports if the U.S. reduces its duties on the sector to below 20%," Suskin said.
Why It Matters: The news comes as Trump said <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46562556/trump-says-550-billion-trade-deal-with-japan-reached-that-will-create-thousands-of-jobs-there-has-never-been-anything-like-it">the deal with Japan</a>, worth $550 billion, "will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs," with 90% of the profits going to the U.S.
Trump's trade deal with the country has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/market-summary/25/07/46563227/trump-trade-deal-with-japan-sends-toyota-mazda-stock-soaring-nikkei-rises-sharply">sent the stocks</a> of companies like Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>), Mazda Motor Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MZDAY#OTC">MZDAY</a>), etc. soaring, with the Nikkei and Topix indices up 3.10% and 2.71% respectively.
Elsewhere, General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) announced its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/07/46564633/gm-says-chevy-is-now-the-no-2-ev-brand-in-us-4-billion-factory-push-to-offset-trump-tariffs">quarterly earnings report</a> for the second quarter of 2025 and said it would be offsetting at least 30-40% of the additional costs due to Trump's tariffs.

Japan&#8217;s benchmark Nikkei 225 rose sharply on Wednesday, after President Donald Trump finalized the long-anticipated trade deal <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46562556/trump-says-550-billion-trade-deal-with-japan-reached-that-will-create-thousands-of-jobs-there-has-never-been-anything-like-it">between Washington and Tokyo</a>.
As part of the $550 billion deal, Japan will open its markets to American cars, trucks, rice and other agricultural products, while agreeing to a 15% tariff on American imports from the nation.

(OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MZDAY#OTC">MZDAY</a>) leads the way, up 17%, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSBHF#OTC">MSBHF</a>) and Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>), up by 12.90% and 13.10%, respectively.
The Japanese Yen is down 0.17% against the U.S. Dollar on Wednesday, trading at 146.51, at the time of writing.

According to Spencer Hakimian of Tolou Capital Management, Japanese automakers like Toyota are surging on news of a 15% tariff, because they can now sidestep the tariff issues plaguing their American counterparts, such as those on steel, copper, and their regional production.
&#8220;Toyota only has to pay 15% more and they&#8217;re done with all the shenanigans,&#8221; he says, while adding that the U.S. has given Japanese automakers an advantage over local players, all in hopes of &#8220;bringing auto jobs back to America.&#8221;
U.S. stock futures are trading flat on Tuesday night, with S&amp;P 500 futures up 0.06%, trading at 6,309.62, Nasdaq Futures down 0.39%, at 20,892.69 and Dow Futures at 44,502.44, up 0.40%.

The news comes after Tesla reported a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/25/07/46289899/tesla-china-sales-plunge-over-75-in-first-week-of-july-despite-strong-q2-deliveries" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% plunge in sales</a> in China during the first week of July as the company recorded<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46409821/tesla-rebounds-in-china-with-12-3k-weekly-registrations-highest-2nd-week-ever" rel="noreferrer noopener"> 5,010 insured registrations.</a>
Bloomberg reports, citing data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.miit.gov.cn/datainfo/cpgg/art/2025/art_4efe58701e4b4d3da9d1ff4b0ad9951f.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">website</a>, that the vehicle will be about 150 centimeters (5.9 inches) longer than the existing Model Y.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Analyst Opinion</h2>
Goldman Sachs analyst&nbsp;Mark Delaney&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/TSLA/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">reiterated a Hold</a> rating on Tesla and set a price forecast of $285 on Thursday.
Delaney&nbsp;expressed optimism about Tesla's Model YL, a new variant of the Model Y, which will likely boost the company's position in the three-row SUV market.
Announced on July 16, the Model YL is about 7 inches longer and 1.5-2 inches taller than the current Model Y, which should make it a more viable option for families needing a three-row SUV, per the analyst.
He noted that the Model Y currently offers a third row, but its limited space makes it suitable mainly for children.
In contrast, the Model YL will likely feature six seats and is positioned to compete effectively in the SUV market in the U.S., Europe, and China, Delaney&nbsp;noted.
While Tesla has not disclosed the exact price for the Model YL, reports suggest it will be priced around 400K Chinese yuan ($37,000), as per the analyst. For context, he noted that the U.S. Model Y starts at approximately $45,000, while the Model X starts at $90,000.
The pricing of the Model YL puts it in direct competition with other three-row SUVs in the market, like the Toyota (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>) Highlander and the Ford (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) Explorer, which both start around $40,000 in the U.S. Tesla's new offering could attract customers who want a larger vehicle without stepping up to the more expensive Model X, Delaney&nbsp;said.
The analyst noted that Tesla will likely deliver 30,000 units of the Model YL in 2025, with an anticipated 175,000 units in 2026 and 375,000 units in 2027.
He writes that the company's overall delivery projections for 2025, 2026, and 2027 are 1.594 million, 1.865 million, and 2.15 million, respectively. Delaney&nbsp;noted this new model will help Tesla to capture the three-row SUV segment better, especially as the company seeks to expand its market share in the U.S. and Europe, where the mid-sized SUV market accounted for 19% of total vehicle units in the U.S. last year.
As per the analyst, Tesla's focus on creating a more differentiated product with the Model YL contrasts with initial investor expectations, which leaned toward a cost-reduced or slightly smaller version of the Model Y.
The announcement has already positively impacted Tesla's stock, with the shares rising 3.5% on July 16, outperforming the flat S&amp;P 500, he noted. Delaney said that this release is a strategic step to address growing demand in key regions, including the U.S., where SUVs dominate vehicle sales. Additionally, the analyst added that Tesla is expected to launch a lower-cost variant of the Model Y or 3 this year, which could further enhance its competitive edge.
Delaney projected fiscal 2025 revenue of $89.64 billion and EPS of $1.00.
Price Action:&nbsp;TSLA stock was down 0.94% at $318.66 at the last check Thursday.
