The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) has condemned the U.S. government's move to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/aluminum" rel="noreferrer noopener">aluminum</a>, calling it a protectionist misfire that risks destabilizing North America's integrated manufacturing base and driving higher inflation across key sectors.
"A 50% tariff on Canadian aluminum will suppress demand across the continent — whether the metal is produced in Canada or the U.S.," Jean Simard, AAC's president and CEO, <a target="_blank" href="https://aluminium.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/AAC_PRESS-RELEASE_US-Tariffs_50_June-3-2025_FINAL.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> in a press release.
"It will impact workers on both sides of the border and disrupt key sectors including defense, construction, and automotive," he stated.
The tariff, enacted last Wednesday following an executive order from President Donald Trump, effectively prices Canadian exports out of the U.S. market at $1,349.50 per metric ton. Simard warned that the move may force Canadian producers to reorient trade toward the European Union and away from their most critical industrial partner.

The domestic Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) also responded to Trump's decision, pointing out how aluminum and tinplate steel tariffs would hurt American families.
"Doubling the steel tariff will further increase the cost of canned goods at the grocery store," CMI president Robert Budway <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cancentral.com/can-manufacturers-institute-opposes-president-trumps-doubling-of-steel-tariffs/" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> on May 30. "These metal tariffs put our nation's food security at risk."
Nine domestic mill production lines have closed since the original 2018 tariffs on tin mill steel, leaving only three operational facilities. Thus, the domestic industry relies on roughly 80% of tin mill steel imports and a significant portion of aluminum.
Canada annually ships 2.7 million metric tons of aluminum to the U.S., much of which is transformed into beverage cans, canned food containers, and consumer packaging.
That raw material supports over 700,000 American manufacturing jobs, while Canada's aluminum sector directly employs 9,500 workers. Combined, the binational aluminum value chain contributes more than $228 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
Thanks to its abundant hydropower, Canada produces low-carbon aluminum at a cost and emissions profile that is far below that of many of its global competitors. That energy benefit is enormous — equivalent to 40 million megawatt-hours per year, or the annual output of four Hoover Dams.
Simrad noted that the Canadian industry supports the U.S. goal of increasing domestic aluminum production capacity from 50% to 80% of national demand, but added that tariffs undermine the investment certainty needed to build that capacity.
"Even if U.S. output doubles, it will still be a net importer," he said.
Instead, the AAC and CMI urge the U.S. to target the real threat: subsidized overcapacity from China. Canada already leads the world in aluminum traceability and anti-dumping enforcement. "Canadian aluminum is not — and will not be — a backdoor for unfair trade," Simard stated. "Undermining a trusted partner only weakens the foundation we both stand on."

The S&amp;P 500 jumped 1.3% to close at 5,700, led by gains in technology stocks. The Russell 2000 soared 2.1%, outperforming larger-cap counterparts and fully recovering the losses triggered by the April 2 tariff announcement.
Under the deal, the U.S. slashed tariffs on UK-made vehicles from 25% to 10%, granting British carmakers a 100,000-vehicle quota. In return, the UK reduced tariffs on American beef to near-zero levels and pledged to purchase $10 billion worth of Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) aircraft. Trump confirmed that the 10% tariff would remain the baseline for now, though he suggested other nations with large trade surpluses should expect higher rates.
During a press briefing, Trump hinted at the &#8220;biggest tax cuts in history&#8221; and urged investors to act: "You better go out and buy stock. This country will be like a rocket ship," he said.
The president also responded to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who noted a day earlier he hadn't been invited to meet with Trump. "I could call him from a meeting, but it's like talking to a wall," Trump said. 
"He's always too late [in cutting interest rates]. But in this case, it's not going to matter that much because our country is so strong."
Markets reflected that strength. The U.S. dollar rallied sharply as the new trade deal and reduced economic uncertainty boosted confidence. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) jumped to its highest level since April 11, climbing over 1% against the Japanese yen.

Crypto markets erupted higher. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) broke above $100,000 for the first time since February, rising 4.1%. Wall Street Rallies After US Seals First Trade Deal: 'You Better Go Out And Buy Stock,' Trump Says

Molson Coors Beverage Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAP#NYSE">TAP</a>) shares are trading lower on Thursday after<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/b45279841/molson-coors-beverage-company-reports-2025-first-quarter-results" rel="noreferrer noopener"> the company reported first-quarter results.</a>
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of 50 cents, missing the Street view of 83 cents. Quarterly sales of $2.30 billion missed the analyst consensus of $2.41 billion.
Net sales decreased 11.3% reported and 10.4% in constant currency. Price and sales mix favorably impacted net sales by 4.1%.
Financial volumes dropped 15.6% in the quarter. This was mainly due to lower brand volumes and prior-year inventory build.

Exiting U.S. and Canada contract brewing cut volume by around 4%.
Molson Coors said its underlying EBITDA (Non-GAAP) was $353.3 million, compared with $476.2 million in the year-ago period.
CEO Gavin Hattersley said the company&#8217;s first-quarter results were affected by macroeconomic challenges, competitive pressures in EMEA &amp; APAC, and anticipated headwinds such as last year&#8217;s U.S. inventory build, the end of contract brewing in the Americas, and Fever-Tree transition fees.
&#8220;Uncertainty around the effects of geopolitical events and global trade policy, including the impacts on economic growth, consumer confidence and expectations around inflation, and currencies has pressured the beer industry and consumption trends,&#8221; Hattersley said.
Total debt as of March 31 was $6.237 billion, and cash and equivalents totaled $412.7 million.
Outlook: For FY25, the company projects a low single-digit decrease of net sales year over year on a constant currency basis (prior view: low single-digit increase)
For adjusted earnings per share, the firm projects a low single-digit increase on a year-over-year basis (prior view: high single-digit increase).
Price Action: TAP shares are trading lower by 4.68% to $54.18 at last check Thursday.

Having entered the beer industry with South African Breweries (SAB) in 1997, Hattersley served in leadership roles at SABMiller, MillerCoors and Molson Coors. When SAB acquired Miller in 2002, he was the first South African to move into the U.S. business, and he has been one of the key leaders who helped grow the business. Since then, the Company has grown both its top and bottom line substantially, reaching annual net sales revenue of $11.6 billion and underlying income before income taxes of $1.6 billion in 2024.
He was also heavily involved in the creation of the MillerCoors U.S. joint venture in 2008, serving as the business's first CFO and later its CEO.
