While some luxury brands are gearing up to pass the cost on to affluent customers, others may be at risk of reputational damage and shifting consumer sentiment, particularly those with undisclosed connections to Chinese manufacturers.
For <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">luxury retail ETFs</a>, the narrative is no longer merely one of premium brand cachet. It&#8217;s one of origin transparency, tariff risk and the danger of counterfeit inundating mainstream markets.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3 Luxury Retail ETFs Under The Microscope</h2>

Wang Sen, a TikTok personality who stated he was an OEM for high-end handbags, was caught on camera facing a wall full of what appeared to be Birkin bags. In a now-deleted video, he asked viewers to reach out and purchase directly from them, as reported by CNN. Real or not, the effect is the same: IBUY constituents are being competed against by direct-from-factory sellers encroaching on their territory.

This ETF comprises high-end U.S. consumer brands like Ralph Lauren&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>) and Nike – companies often <a href="https://www.fibre2fashion.com/news/industrial-textiles-news/viral-tiktok-videos-promote-chinese-factory-buys-to-dodge-us-tariffs-302029-newsdetails.htm?amp=true">cited </a>in viral videos as sending manufacturing offshore to China. If sales of these companies take a hit as consumers shift to direct purchasing, this fund is likely to feel the pain.

What&#8217;s behind this viral content bonanza is more than transparency—there&#8217;s a larger trade war narrative. In a new twist on U.S.-China tensions, CNN explains that Chinese influencers are flooding TikTok to pressure Americans to bypass Trump&#8217;s 145% tariffs by purchasing directly from Chinese manufacturers. One video purporting to document the suppliers of Lululemon leggings has over 1.5 million likes. In comments? &#8220;Now this is how you do a trade war.&#8221;
Apps such as Taobao and DHgate, notorious for carrying &#8220;dupes,&#8221; burst into the U.S. App Store&#8217;s top 10 this month. Even if they are not selling original OEM products, they still undercut the prestige and price power of luxury brands.
A popular video cited by the outlet showed a user saying Lululemon&#8217;s $98 leggings were purchased for $5–$6 from a factory in Yiwu. Lululemon quickly dismissed any connection to those manufacturers, stating the names does not appear on its formal 2025 list of suppliers.
Luxury groups, however, are adapting. French luxury brand Hermès indicated that it would pass the total cost of US tariffs to buyers, according to Reuters. The French luxury group, known for its Birkin and Kelly handbags, which sell for $10,000 or more, generated a 7% year-over-year increase in Q1 revenues on a constant currency basis, falling short of the almost 10% surge that analysts had estimated, according to HSBC data cited by Reuters.
Hermès can count on its high-end clientele to swallow higher prices, but not everyone in the industry enjoys such pricing power. LVMH, a bellwether, saw a 5% decline in its fashion and leather segment.
The Illusion Of Reshoring
While the Trump administration is counting on tariffs to restore manufacturing to U.S. shores, the situation is more complicated. A recently released CNBC Supply Chain Survey revealed that 74% of firms identify cost as the main obstacle preventing them from reshoring. Few are contemplating returning to America. Most prefer to move to other low-tariff nations such as Vietnam and Cambodia.
This implies that ETFs with U.S. luxury and consumer brand exposure will continue to be tied to impenetrable global supply chains—most of which are still routed through China.
Final Word For Investors
For investors in ETFs, the actual concern might not be where things are produced, but whether companies are honest about it. The viral TikTok clips, grounded in reality or not, have highlighted a building consumer desire for authenticity in labeling and sourcing.

Shares of companies in the broader retail and apparel sector are trading lower as stocks pull back after surging Wednesday following President Trump's tariff pause announcement.

Retail stocks such as Capri Holdings Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPRI#NYSE">CPRI</a>) and Ralph Lauren Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>) are up Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension on reciprocal tariffs for countries that have not retaliated against the U.S., easing trade tensions <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44720006/markets-take-off-as-trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-non-retaliating-nations-slaps-china-with-125-duty">for import-heavy sectors.</a>
What To Know: Trump's announcement excluded China, which instead will face an immediate 125% tariff hike. The decision triggered a broad rally across consumer and discretionary stocks, as investors saw relief for companies reliant on imported goods and global supply chains.
In a Truth Social post, Trump praised over 75 countries that he said followed his advice by avoiding retaliatory measures. Those nations will now benefit from a reduced 10% reciprocal tariff and a delay in further duties, offering temporary cost stability for retailers.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the policy in a White House press conference, calling it a long-overdue correction to global trade imbalances. He emphasized that the 10% tariff rate is a temporary floor meant to provide more predictability in international commerce.
Bessent also took aim at China, highlighting the trade deficit and accusing Beijing of acting in bad faith. He said the new tariff structure creates leverage for future negotiations and gives U.S. businesses room to breathe.

Shares of retail and apparel companies are trading higher following President Trump's decision to implement a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China.

U.S. stocks staged a broad-based rally on Monday, snapping a volatile losing streak after President Donald Trump hinted at a more diplomatic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">approach to tariff negotiations.</a>
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the U.S. is handling a "massive amount of requests for negotiations," referencing active talks with South Korea and hinting that China "wants to make a deal, badly."
He also mentioned a joint venture involving an Alaska pipeline and military cost-sharing, asserting that South Korea&#8217;s top negotiation team was en route to the U.S.
Meanwhile, Fed speakers begin to highlight the negative economic impact from tariffs. &#8220;We can&#8217;t really wait to the end of the quarter plus one month before we find out that investment really dropped off and GDP growth is shrinking,&#8221; Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said.
By midday trading in New York, all major U.S. stock indices were firmly in the green. The S&amp;P 500 rose 1.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.1%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led with a 1.8% jump. Technology stocks were the day's clear outperformers, driven by a strong rebound in the semiconductor sector.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) surged 3.3%, marking its strongest intraday gain since September 2024. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) led the charge with a 7.3% jump, followed by Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>) and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), which both climbed 6.1%.
In commodities, gold prices rose 0.5% to $2,335 per ounce, poised to snap a three-session losing streak. Oil prices also saw a firm recovery, with WTI crude advancing 1.5% to $61.50 per barrel, reversing recent weakness. U.S. Treasury yields remained largely flat. 
In contrast, cryptocurrency markets failed to participate in the rally. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell another 1% to $78,000.

President Donald Trump's sweeping new trade tariffs sent shockwaves through global markets on Thursday, triggering a massive sell-off that echoed the COVID-19 pandemic-era routs, as investor risk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">appetite vanished in a flash.</a>
Wall Street saw a staggering $2 trillion in market cap erased, with the U.S.&#8217;s biggest 10 companies shedding $1 trillion alone.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) plunged 8.7%, staring down its worst day since March 2020 and wiping out nearly $300 billion in value. NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 6.4%, losing $171.9 billion, while Amazon.com Inc. The S&amp;P 500 fell nearly 4%, poised for its worst session since September 2022, and sank to a seven-month low. Small caps took the brunt of the sell-off, with the Russell 2000 plunging over 5% and officially entering a bear market, now down more than 20% from its 2024 peak.
Fears of retaliatory action from key U.S. trading partners dragged every major sector into the red, except for defensive plays like consumer staples and utilities.
Consumer discretionary stocks were slammed. Apparel names posted double-digit losses: Ralph Lauren Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>), Nike Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>), Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) and Garmin Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) each dropped between 10% and 16%.
Cruise lines were also hit hard: Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) sank 13%, Carnival Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) fell 10%, and Royal Caribbean Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) slid 9%.
Bond markets saw a mild flight to safety. Treasury yields edged lower, yet the U.S. dollar weakened 1.6%, with the DXY index heading for its worst day since November 2022.
Commodities weren't spared. Oil prices nosedived on fears of a global slowdown, worsened by OPEC+'s surprise move to raise output. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged 7.5%, slipping below $70 per barrel.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) showed relative resilience in the carnage, dipping just 1% and holding above $81,600.

Wall Street Wipes Out $2 Trillion, Apple Eyes Worst Day Since COVID-19 Pandemic, Oil Plummets: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Shares of companies within retail, apparel, and e-commerce industries are trading lower amid heavy selling pressure as markets react to President Trump's tariff announcements, which may hamper consumer spending.

While the tariffs announced by President Donald Trump are already dragging markets deep into the red, early signs of strain are beginning to emerge in corporate health indicators, raising concerns that the services sector, the backbone of the U.S. economy, may no longer be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">able to sustain growth.</a>
The Institute for Supply Management&#8217;s Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey revealed a marked deterioration in sentiment among service-sector businesses last month, further igniting investor concerns on the state of the economy. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ISM Services PMI Falls More Than Expected</h3>
The ISM Services PMI fell sharply to 50.9% in March, down from 53.5% in February, which had been the highest reading since August 2023. The decline was steeper than expected, with forecasts pointing to a more modest drop to 53%.
This was the lowest reading since December and only marginally above the 50% threshold that separates expansion from contraction.
The Business Activity Index, a gauge of current output, actually strengthened to 55.9% in March from 54.4%, extending its expansion streak to 58 consecutive months. However, forward-looking indicators showed weakness.
The New Orders Index dropped to 50.4% from 52.2%, suggesting waning customer demand, while the Backlog of Orders Index slipped to 45.6%, down from 47.7%, marking a third straight month of contraction.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Employment Index Craters, Hiring Freezes Emerge</h3>
The most striking component of the report was the collapse in the Employment Index, which plunged to 46.2% from 53.9%—a 7.7 percentage point drop and a nine-month low, marking its first contraction in six months.
That's a red flag for a services sector that comprises nearly 80% of U.S. private-sector employment. The reading suggests that companies are either slowing down hiring, cutting jobs outright, or scaling back hours amid economic uncertainty.
In the ISM's qualitative commentary, respondents in professional, scientific and technical services reported a loosening labor market. They cited easier hiring conditions, declining staff turnover and a more abundant supply of high-quality job candidates.
One participant said, "Have been able to hire high-quality employees to fill open positions," while another described a "conservative view of the job market and economy," noting they are "not adding head count or resources."
Now, 19.2% of respondents anticipate reducing employment, up from 15% in February.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Still Hot Despite Easing Slightly</h3>
The Prices Index registered at 60.9%, down modestly from 62.6% in February, but still above the 60% mark for a fourth straight month. That signals input cost pressures remain elevated, even as demand cools.
The ISM also noted a surge in mentions of tariff-related cost pressures, citing "a significant increase this month in the number of respondents reporting cost increases due to tariff activity."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions: Stocks Fall, Traders Eye Four Rate Cuts</h3>
The weaker-than-expected ISM Services PMI intensified the tariff-driven selloff on Wall Street, dragging major U.S. equity indexes to new session lows.
The S&amp;P 500 index – as trakced by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) – fell 4.1% to 5,440 points, eyeing the worst session since September 2022. 
The Nasdaq 100 – tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – sank 4.4%, hitting a 7-month low.
Shares of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) were down 8.5%, on track for their worst day since March 2020. 
Similarly, major banks like Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) fell 8.7% and 9.10%, eyeing their worst days in five years. 
Ralph Lauren (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>) was the S&amp;P 500&#8217;s worst performer for the day, down 17%, also heading for its worst session since March 2020.
In money markets, traders ramped up bets on Federal Reserve rate cuts following the downbeat economic data. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of four 25-basis-point cuts by December 2025 surged to as high as 67%. 
The shift in expectations triggered a sharp selloff in the U.S. dollar, which plunged 2.1%—its steepest single-day drop since November 2022.
