While most assumed America&#8217;s reciprocal tariffs would be based on the actual tariffs other countries levy on American products, the Trump Administration included &#8220;currency manipulation and trade barriers&#8221; to get its eye-opening numbers.&nbsp;
A few different posters on X determined that the Trump Administration used our trade deficit with each country to determine the size of our reciprocal tariffs. This is essentially the &#8220;scaled tariff&#8221; approach we wrote about here a couple of weeks ago.&nbsp;

Let&#8217;s talk about why Trump isn&#8217;t the crazy one here, and then let&#8217;s address the market implications.&nbsp;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">That Perennial Trade Deficits Are Bad Used To Be A Mainstream Idea</h2>
As Ian Fletcher wrote back in 2010 (&#8220;America Was Founded As A Protectionist Nation&#8221;), pretty much all of America&#8217;s founders were protectionists. And we only abandoned protectionism to prop up our allies during the Cold War: 
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">What happened to America&#8217;s long protectionist tradition? In the end, America only seriously turned away from protectionism as a Cold War gambit to prop up capitalist economies abroad and tie them to the U.S. Geopolitics trumped domestic economics.
Ironically, our old protectionist playbook for economic development is the same one, in many respects, that China and other nations are using against the United States today. Back when we were the ascending economic power in the late 19th century, it was&nbsp;Britain&nbsp;that complained about &#8220;unfair trade!&#8221; They were right, of course&#8211;but given that nobody forced free trade upon them, it was their own fault. Today, having forgotten our own history, we can&#8217;t even recognize the game being played against us, let alone figure out how to counter it. We will continue to pay a high price in lost jobs and declining industries until we wise up.

The problem is most American pundits&#8217; knowledge of history extends back to World War II (&#8220;Hitler bad&#8221;) and no further.

The main market implication now is that the markets are going down. The futures are a sea of red, and American companies heavily dependent on imports are going to face some major headwinds. The CEO of the retailer formerly known as Restoration Hardware, RH (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RH#NYSE">RH</a>) saw his company&#8217;s stock drop 25% after hours, during his earnings call.&nbsp;

The Big Liberation Day Surprise

RH (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RH#NYSE">RH</a>) reported weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results after the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/RH/earnings">market close on Wednesday</a>.
RH reported fourth-quarter revenue of $812.41 million, missing the consensus estimate of $829.56 million, according to Benzinga Pro. The luxury retailer reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.58 per share, missing analyst estimates of $1.92 per share.
"The important work and substantial investments we&#8217;ve made over the past two years are now resulting in meaningful share gains and significant strategic separation, positioning the RH brand to expand its leadership position across the luxury home market over the next decade," the company said in a letter to shareholders.
RH expects first-quarter revenue growth of 12.5% to 13.5%. The company anticipates full-year 2025 revenue growth of 10% to 13%.
RH shares gained 4.3% to close at $249.35 on Wednesday.
These analysts made changes to their price targets on RH following earnings announcement.

A sweeping new wave of tariffs unveiled by President Donald Trump on Wednesday triggered a sharp selloff during the after hours of trading as the scope and scale of the trade duties exceeded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44616760/donald-trump-sets-reciprocal-tariffs-on-key-trade-partners-in-historic-policy-shock">Wall Street's worst-case expectations.</a>
The president framed the move as a long-overdue correction to decades of trade imbalance, instituting what he called a "reciprocal tariff rate," set at 50% of what trading partners charge the United States, but also factoring in non-tariff barriers like currency manipulation, value-added taxes and outright import bans.
While Trump had telegraphed his intention to "rebalance" U.S. trade policy, the specific duty levels, some of which reached into the mid-30% range with key trading partners, jolted investors.
Under the new framework, China, which Trump said imposes tariffs as high as 67% on American goods, will now face reciprocal U.S. duties of approximately 37%. The European Union, which applies a 39% combined rate including VATs, will be subject to a 20% U.S. tariff. Japan, with an estimated 46% trade barrier, now faces a 24% duty on exports to the U.S.
Canada and Mexico, two major trading partners, were notably excluded from the tariff program — a move that suggests Trump may be preserving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, at least for now.
The White House confirmed that new trade tariffs will take effect on April 9. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs Spark After-Hours Chaos: Index Futures Dive</h3>
The market&#8217;s reaction was swift and brutal. By 5:10 p.m. ET, futures on the S&amp;P 500 dropped 2.5%, while Nasdaq 100 futures fell 3.3%. Dow Jones Industrial Average contracts lost 1.4% and the Russell 2000 futures collapsed by 4.7%. 
Losses were broad-based. Total revenue was up 10% on a year-over-year basis as fourth-quarter demand jumped 17%. The company reported adjusted operating income of $92 million, up 38% year-over-year, and adjusted EBITDA margin of 17.1%. 
&#8220;The important work and substantial investments we've made over the past two years are now resulting in meaningful share gains and significant strategic separation, positioning the RH brand to expand its leadership position across the luxury home market over the next decade,&#8221; the company said in a letter to shareholders.
&#8220;While demand softened in mid-December after mortgage rates spiked and mortgage applications fell 22 percent post the Fed signaling rates would remain largely unchanged this year, RH Brand demand stabilized at up 19% in January.&#8221;

Outlook: RH expects first-quarter revenue growth of 12.5% to 13.5%. The company anticipates full-year 2025 revenue growth of 10% to 13%. 
RH said it plans to introduce a new RH Outdoor Sourcebook and new RH Interiors Sourcebook in 2025. The company also highlighted plans to launch a &#8220;significant&#8221; brand extension in the fall that it believes will &#8220;meaningfully expand the market size and share of the RH brand.&#8221;
RH also plans to open seven design galleries, two outdoor galleries and two new concept galleries throughout the year. 
RH executives will further discuss the quarter on a call with investors and analysts at 5 p.m. ET.
