Last week, instant Experts of the Internet took a few minutes off their duties as Global Trade and Monetary Policy Experts to share their insights on the information gleaned from the latest round of 13F filings at the SEC.
The Clickbait Delivery Vehicles masquerading as financial media took a hot second to refrain from delivering forecasts of the financial collapse of the Western world and almost guaranteed strategies for becoming fabulously wealthy by next Tuesday to do the same.
Although more than 6,000 or so money managers, institutions, and hedge funds have over $100 million in assets and are required to file a list of their holdings at the end of every quarter, the media and the Instant Experts will focus on about ten of the best-known investors to deliver their life-changing advice.
I will read the filings from Warren Buffett, Carl Ichan, Seth Klarman and other well-known and ridiculously successful investors to see what they are up to.
I might even build a watch list of a few ideas to put on a market crash watch list.
However, making a practice to steal the same ideas that a few million other people will also be buying creates no edge and little chance of the ever-elusive excess profits which we seek.
I have been perusing 13F filings since the late 1980s. Back in the pre-Internet days, we had to wait until the end of the day (or the weekend) and use the Quotron machine and print the filings out on the dot matrix printers in the back room of the office.
Using them during the day was out of the question as they took forever to print.
We would then go through the filings and compare them to last quarter, using a yellow highlighter to mark changes.
It was a tad tedious but very few people were doing it, and it was wildly profitable to steal ideas from the best investors on the planet.
As time went on, it became easier to access and compare the information and develop ideas.
While one would think that would mean it became more difficult to profit from stock piracy, that never happened.
The same technology that made accessing information easier led to the rise of the instant expert and the soundbite.
You could have made a lot of money over the last couple of decades tracking the holdings of Donald Smith and Company.
The firm is way off the radar screen but has used a deep value investment approach to soundly beat the indexes.
It took more work than logging onto social media or watching market wrap soundbites, but it has paid off with market-beating returns.
Here are the top five stocks the firm bought in the first quarter of the year:
Park Hotels &amp; Resorts (Ticker: PK) is a publicly traded lodging REIT focused on owning and operating high-quality hotels and resorts primarily in major U.S. markets. The portfolio is heavily weighted toward urban full-service hotels and is currently undergoing a strategic repositioning to improve profitability following post-pandemic demand shifts.
The shares trade at 62% of book value.
Harley-Davidson is an iconic American motorcycle manufacturer known for heavyweight touring and cruiser bikes, with operations split between motorcycles and financial services. The company is focused on revitalizing its brand through premium product offerings and global expansion, while managing declining U.S. ridership demographics.
The stock trades at 93% of book value.
Eldorado Gold (Ticker: EGO) is a Canadian-based mid-tier gold producer with mining, development, and exploration operations in Turkey, Canada, and Greece. The company emphasizes long-life assets with low all-in sustaining costs and maintains a conservative balance sheet to fund organic growth.
The shares trade hands at just 90% of asset value currently.
Hudbay Minerals (Ticker: HBM) is a diversified Canadian mining company primarily engaged in the production of copper, zinc, gold, and silver through assets in North and South America. The firm recently expanded copper production capacity in Arizona and remains highly leveraged to global base metal demand.
The stock trades at 1.2 times book, so you might want to wait for a pullback to be a buyer.
Nomura Holdings (Ticker: NMR) is Japan&#8217;s largest investment bank and brokerage, offering global financial services including asset management, trading, and investment banking. While deeply rooted in the Japanese market, Nomura has sought international growth, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, amid a challenging interest rate and competitive environment.
I am a huge Japan bull and have recommended Nomura shares on several other occasions. The stock is trading at just 75% of book value.

Elastic (Ticker: ESTC) is the company behind Elasticsearch — the kind of search tech that powers apps, websites, and cybersecurity tools. They&#8217;re shifting more of their revenue into the cloud, and that part of the business is growing like a weed, now making up more than half of subscriptions. With AI and observability tools becoming more essential, Elastic has a clear runway to keep expanding in the enterprise space.
Wix (Ticker: WIX) is what your cousin used to build their food truck website, and what marketing teams now use to spin up slick pages without writing code. Revenue is growing in the double digits, and their Partners business (think: pros who build sites for others) is leading the charge. Add in a dose of AI, and Wix looks like it&#8217;s quietly becoming the toolkit of choice for the modern web.
Zoom (Ticker: ZM) isn&#8217;t just the pandemic darling anymore, it&#8217;s trying to grow up into a full communications platform for work. Enterprise sales are driving modest growth now, and Zoom is betting big on AI collaboration tools to stand out in a crowded space. It&#8217;s no longer a hypergrowth story, but it&#8217;s a business with staying power and an evolving product line.
Tower (Ticker: TSEM) makes the behind-the-scenes chips that go into everything from industrial equipment to wireless gear. The last quarter showed decent revenue growth, and management sees steady improvement through the rest of the year. It&#8217;s not flashy, but Tower is a steady operator in a part of the chip world that doesn&#8217;t get enough love.
There is a lot of money to be made stealing ideas from the best money managers and hedge fund types if you avoid the headlines and focus on the under-the-radar folks putting up big numbers.

Nomura Holdings Q4 EPS $0.15 Up From $0.12 YoY, Sales $2.97B Down From $3.00B YoY

On Tuesday, Nomura Holdings Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NMR#NYSE">NMR</a>) disclosed a definitive agreement to acquire Macquarie Group, Ltd.&#8217;s (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCQEF#OTC">MCQEF</a>) public asset management operations in the U.S. and Europe in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/why-its-moving" rel="noreferrer noopener">all-cash deal valued at $1.8 billion</a>.
The deal includes around $180 billion in assets under management from retail <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nomuraholdings.com/news/nr/holdings/20250422/20250422.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">and</a> institutional clients, spanning equity, fixed income, and multi-asset strategies.
The transaction is expected to close by the year-end, pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
This acquisition is projected to enhance Nomura&#8217;s global reach and capabilities of its Investment Management Division, which currently oversees approximately $590 billion in assets.
Following the deal&#8217;s completion, Nomura&#8217;s total assets under management are expected to rise to roughly $770 billion, with over 35% of those assets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">managed for clients outside Japan</a>.
The transaction will also establish the company&#8217;s substantial operational base in Philadelphia.
Kentaro Okuda, Nomura President and Group CEO, said &#8220;This acquisition will align with our 2030 global growth and diversification ambitions to invest in stable, high margin businesses,&#8221;
As of December 31, 2024, cash and cash deposits stood <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nomuraholdings.com/investor/summary/financial/data/2025_3q_pres.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">at </a>5.575 billion Yen.
Price Action: NMR shares are up 2.75% at $5.600&nbsp;at the last check Wednesday.

This is a 100 percent increase over earnings of $0.11 per share from the same period last year. The company reported $3.30 billion in sales this quarter. This is a 21.66 percent increase over sales of $2.71 billion the same period last year.

Earnings Scheduled For February 5, 2025

It is all true.
The market is priced at ridiculous levels.
The current multiples of earnings, cash flow, assets, and dividends of the S&amp;P 500 (Ticker: SPY) imply that we live in a perfect world and perfection will continue to grow at a double-digit rate.
We do not live in a perfect world.
The bond market, usually the far brighter and less emotional market, has been showing great concern and a smudge of outright fear in recent weeks. It has reentered a downtrend even as stocks went higher.
Should we just sell and hide under a rock on top of a mountain somewhere until the headlines improve?
Probably not.
If we have learned nothing else, it is that markets can remain irrational, unrealistic, and overpriced for a very long time.
What we can do is become cautious.
Avoid companies where insiders are selling as the price declines.
Avoid stocks that are being sold by smart money investors with outstanding track records.
Flipping that over, if you are looking to put money to work, look for companies where insiders are making large open-market purchases of shares of the companies they manage.
Look for companies where investors with great track records are stepping up and establishing new company positions.
I recently sat down to review institutional buying and selling activity, and a couple of purchases caught my eye.
One such smart money buy was a biotech company.
Let me be upfront and say that I know nothing about biotechnology.
I am not a doctor, I have never played a doctor on television, and I generally avoid small-cap biotech stocks because that is where money goes to die.
There have been a handful of exceptions over the years, and they were all the result of noticing that a very smart, very successful investor had bought a lot of stock.
I noticed that Harris Kupperman of Praetorian Capital had purchased a 5.5% stake in Immune Bio (Ticker: INMB).
Kupperman, or JKuppy as he prefers to be called apparently, is not everyone&#8217;s cup of tea.
He can come across as brash, opinionated, and a tad arrogant.
He runs part of his fund in deep-value stocks and the other half in special situations.
It is almost like looking in a personality mirror.
He is also very good at what he does.
Kupperman runs his fund to do okay in what he calls standard years and to really push the edge when he feels he has uncovered opportunities in deeply undervalued markets and sectors.
It is working.
Since 2019, his fund is up a little over 700%.
Immune Bio is working on developing drugs using its core research that could help treat depression and Alzheimer&#8217;s.
Both are massive markets that could lead to substantial partnership opportunities or licensing deals for a company that progresses in developing a successful drug.
The folks at Praetorian are not the only ones excited about the stock. Raymond James analyst Gary Nachman recently wrote a favorable report with an $18 price target for shares of Immune Bio.
That is almost three times the current stock price.
The true test of another intelligence is how much they agree with me, and a closer peek into Praetorian&#8217;s portfolio at the end of the third quarter shows that he bought shares of one of my favorite Japanese firms, Nomura (Ticker: NMR).
Nomura has had one of those years that just naturally attracts my attention.
One staffer tried to manipulate the bond market, and the firm had to pay a fine and temporarily lost its status as a primary dealer.
Then, a Nomura staffer was arrested for attempting to murder an elderly client.
These are not the kind of headlines that attract enthusiastic buyers of your stock.
None of this impacts a firm of Nomura&#8217;s size, but it creates a cloud around the stock that creates buying opportunities.
The scandals have partially masked that business at Nomura is pretty good. Revenues are rising, and profits more than doubled, as the company reported its largest profits in four years.
The company is buying back stock and paying a cash dividend of 4.3%, rewarding shareholders with its excess cash.
The company is increasing its presence outside of Asia, focusing on wealthy markets like the Americas, India and the Middle East. Early results are promising, with solid gains in the number of customers for both wealth management and investment banking in these markets.
In spite of the strong results and positive outlook, the stock is trading at just 82% of tangible book value and less than ten times earnings.
These are uncertain times in financial markets.
There are as many possible outcomes as there are questions about what lies ahead in 2025.
Avoiding stocks where insiders and the smart money are selling and accumulating the ones they are buying can help us navigate turbulent waters profitably.

C-Suite Buy of the Week: Executive Moves from Biotech to Banking

Archegos Capital Management founder Bill Hwang was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 years in prison for fraud and market manipulation tied to the fund's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38718096/bill-hwangs-trial-begins-over-archegos-fund-collapse-what-to-expect">dramatic collapse in 2021.&nbsp;</a>
The Details: Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in New York to slightly less time than the 21 years prosecutors had sought in the case. 
Hwang's lawyers had asked that he be given no prison time at all and Hwang asked the judge on Wednesday to impose a sentence that would allow him to continue to serve society. He also said that he felt "deep pain" about what happened at Archegos, according to a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-20/archegos-founder-bill-hwang-sentenced-to-18-years-in-prison?sref=TBDibEcD">report.</a>

Hellerstein said Hwang's request for no jail time was "utterly ridiculous" considering the amount of money involved. 
"The amount of losses that were caused by your conduct are larger than any amount of losses I've deal with as a judge," Hellerstein said.
The judge also compared Hwang to FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who received a 25-year sentence for fraud.
"What was worse? Mr. Bankman-Fried's fraud or Mr. Hwang's fraud?" Hellerstein asked.
The jury found that Hwang directed Archegos staff to relay that the firm had large positions in companies such as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>). Archegos actually invested heavily in a small group of stocks that could be more easily manipulated. 
The collapse at Archegos contributed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/11/29835374/troubled-lender-credit-suisse-flags-massive-loss-for-q4-as-it-speeds-up-turnaround-plans">to the demise </a>of Credit Suisse Group AG and rippled through Wall Street causing significant losses at Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>), UBS Group AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBS#NYSE">UBS</a>), Nomura Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NMR#NYSE">NMR</a>) and other banks.
Former Archegos CFO Patrick Halligan was convicted alongside Hwang earlier in 2024 and will be sentenced separately in January.

Hedge Funder Linked To Credit Suisse Collapse Gets 18 Year Prison Sentence For Fraud, Market Manipulation

U.S. stocks were higher, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 300 points on Tuesday.
Shares of Emerson Electric Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EMR#NYSE">EMR</a>) rose sharply during Monday's session after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results and issued FY25 adjusted EPS guidance above estimates. Also, the company announced it increased return of capital to shareholders with plans to repurchase <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/11/41748679/emerson-electric-gains-on-q4-earnings-beat-and-fy25-growth-forecast-eyes-aspentech-buyout">approximately $2B in FY25.</a>
Net sales growth of 13% year over year to $4.62 billion, beating the consensus of $4.57 billion. Underlying sales were up 4%, and underlying orders increased by 2% in the quarter. Adjusted EPS improved 15% to $1.48, beating the consensus of $1.47.
Emerson Electric shares jumped 6.6% to $117.01 on Tuesday.
