Nasdaq, S&P 500 Hit 6-Month Lows As Recession Fears Grow: What's Driving Markets Monday?

U.S. stock futures declined on Monday after a small bout of relief on Friday as indices neared the correction zone. Futures of all four benchmark indices fell in premarket trading.
President Donald Trump, on Sunday, did not rule out the possibility of a recession this year. Acknowledging the potential of short-term turbulence from his economic agenda, he expressed confidence in future prosperity. In a Fox News interview, he said, &#8220;I hate to predict things like that&#8221; and called the changes being brought about by his administration as &#8220;very big.&#8221;
Meanwhile, China responded with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods including its largest import from the U.S. — Soybeans.
Investors will watch out for the inflation data slated to be released this week on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.24%, while the two-year yield was at 3.94%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is a 97% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) shares dipped over 16% on Friday after the company reported worse-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results. American Public Education Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APEI#NASDAQ">APEI</a>) shares surged 22% after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly financial results.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with utilities, information technology and energy stocks recording the biggest gains on Friday. However, consumer staples and financial stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 223 points to 42,801.72 on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.55% to 5,770.20, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.70% at 18,196.22 during Friday's session.

<li>Analysts expect Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL) to post quarterly earnings of $1.49 per share and revenue of $14.40 billion. The company will release earnings after the markets close. In after-hours trading, Oracle shares rose 0.2% to $155.40.</li>
<li>Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CTSH#NASDAQ">CTSH</a>) shares rose in after-hours trading on Friday following a report suggesting activist investor, Mantle Ridge, built a more than $1 billion stake in the company. Vail Resorts Earnings Are Imminent; These Most Accurate Analysts Revise Forecasts Ahead Of Earnings Call

All three major indices were red in Friday&#8217;s midday trading, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 down 1% and 1.24%, respectively, and on track for their worst weeks since September 2024. "The stock market is moving in lockstep with tariff headlines, and that is likely to keep volatility very elevated for the foreseeable future, as the market does not like uncertainty," said Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management, per CNBC. 
"While we expect the market to find its footing and recover from the tariff-driven selloff, investors should brace for continued choppiness until these uncertainties clear," Smith added. 
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note dipped to the 4.23% mark on Friday after a softer-than-expected February <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44189725/unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-february-us-economy-adds-fewer-jobs-than-expected">jobs report</a> added to concerns of a slowing U.S. economy. The BLS nonfarm payrolls report showed the U.S. added 151,000 jobs in February, below market expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected. 
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 0.6% to $90.94. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell back below $90,000 after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve on Thursday. The President&#8217;s crypto summit will be held at the White House later on Friday with the potential for additional catalysts for cryptocurrencies.
Wall Street now looks ahead to next week&#8217;s inflation data, JOLTS job openings report and preliminary figures for the Michigan consumer sentiment index.

Nasdaq Falls Into Correction As Tariffs Roil Wall Street: What's Moving Markets Friday?

Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTN#NYSE">MTN</a>) shareholder Late Apex Partners, LLC (LAP) is pushing for a substantial restructuring following its considerable <a target="_blank" href="https://c38f3580-b7de-4014-ba69-5a303368ebc7.usrfiles.com/ugd/c38f35_ab40b5e9f47644b1994c8fae92dec5a6.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">investments in the company</a>.
LAP advocated for immediate steps to resolve what it sees as Vail&#8217;s disappointing performance over the past five years.
LAP argued that the company possesses the finest assets and financial potential, but its performance has been unacceptable.
Late Apex Partners criticized Vail for relying on metrics such as &#8220;Resort Reported EBITDA,&#8221; which they claim do not accurately reflect real value creation. While EBITDA has grown, Vail&#8217;s free cash flow has declined, noted the investor.

Additionally, LAP also flagged the company&#8217;s capital allocation approach as lacking focus, highlighting a $2 billion investment since 2019, yet a drop in free cash flow and worsening customer experiences.
LAP argued that the company&#8217;s high dividend payout, taking up about 90% of free cash flow, has limited its ability to reinvest in the business.
The investor attributes much of the underperformance to the leadership of CEO Eric Lynch and CFO Michael Korch, recommending the replacement of both to address the decline in shareholder value.
The firm also suggested that Chairman Katz should step down to prevent further damage to his legacy. LAP&#8217;s proposed reforms include cutting the dividend by 80%, prioritizing internal reinvestment, and hiring a proven CEO to lead the company&#8217;s turnaround.
If implemented, LAP believes these changes could lead to a $400 per share valuation, offering a 140% increase in equity.
Price Action: MTN shares closed higher by 5.58% at $176.00 on Monday.
