"Like the others, there was no significant news to justify the rally — just sheer retail momentum," she added. "The move underscores how meme-stock dynamics remain alive and well, driven more by investor enthusiasm and positioning than corporate performance."
Sabin Hathorn pointed to several contributors to renewed interest in so-called meme stocks.&nbsp;
"First, retail trading forums and social platforms have once again become engines of crowd momentum," she wrote. "Second, these stocks are all heavily shorted, setting the stage for violent short squeezes when buying pressure ramps up."
All of the stocks involved in the most recent meme stock rally have significantly high short interest.&nbsp;
According to data from <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw">Benzinga Pro</a>, short interest makes up 32% of Krispy Kreme's public float. For comparison, Opendoor's short interest sits at 21%, and Kohl's is even higher at 47%. The original meme-stock, GameStop Corp. The Roundhill CEO estimates that a college basketball video game could sell four million titles conservatively and could mean $300 million in bookings for EA. The game could also increase engagement between gamers and EA in between football seasons.
GameStop Not In ETF: Investors might think that it makes sense to put video game retailer GameStop into the video game ETF, but that's not the case.
Mazza said there are several reasons GameStop doesn't make the ETF cut. The most important one is the ETF seeking to track the Nasdaq CTA Global Video Games Software Index, which GameStop isn't included.
The index includes publishers and developers of games and digital content creators, but doesn't include physical retailers.
Mazza also said GameStop's current financials would likely keep the stock out of the ETF.
"GameStop also fails the growth-quality screen: revenue is shrinking double-digits as sales migrate online, and recent meme-driven volatility has been disconnected from fundamentals."

$250,000 For A Stapler? GameStop Turns Blunder Into Big Charity Win

Video game retailer GameStop Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) was involved in one of the most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/gaming/23/01/30412695/gamestop-short-squeeze-anniversary-a-look-back-at-david-vs-goliath-battle-and-whats-next">famous short squeezes</a> of all time, but the short sellers betting against the stock aren't scaring away investor and CEO Ryan Cohen.
What Happened: Cohen disclosed a 9% stake in GameStop<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/gaming/25/01/43342224/ryan-cohen-moves-gamestop-shares-to-personal-name-sparking-speculation-on-next-steps"> in August 2020</a> and later increased his stake in the company to 13% later that year. The former Chewy founder became chairman of the company in June 2021 and was announced as CEO in September 2023.
Cohen said he was fascinated by the amount of hatred towards investing in GameStop, even before he made his own investment.
"There's always been a lot of people on the other side of the trade," Cohen told Charles Payne in a recent Fox Business <a href="https://x.com/PhantomBlack699/status/1945189627599474859">interview</a>.
Cohen and other retail traders were able to initiate a large short squeeze as hedge funders and big investors bet against GameStop in early 2021. While the number of short sellers against GameStop has declined, around 18.9% of the company's float is short today.
 Cohen said he doesn't have much respect for short sellers who are betting on someone's failure. "I think it&#8217;s un-American to bet against business, but it's a free market."
He said short sellers could ultimately need a cover on their position, which could be a good thing as well.
While Cohen is against short sellers, he said it's fine if people are on the other side. "I'm not scared of the short sellers. They can short the stock."
Cohen said he spends his time focusing on running the business, rather than on short sellers.
"The stock will take care of itself."
