Wall Street Rally Extends Into Third Day: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCX#NYSE">FCX</a>), the world's largest copper producer, shares rose in early trading Thursday after the company reported&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/b44976599/freeport-first-quarter-2025-financial-and-operating-results-release-available-on-its-website" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-quarter FY25 results</a>.
Revenue stood at $5.73 billion, beating the consensus of $5.44 billion. Copper sales volumes totaled 872 million pounds, which exceeded the January 2025 estimate.
Copper sales declined year-over-year due to a major maintenance project planned in Indonesia.
Adjusted EPS was&nbsp;$0.24, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">which is in line with the consensus</a>.

Copper's average realized price per pound was&nbsp;$4.44, and production totaled 868 million pounds in the&nbsp;first quarter&nbsp;of FY25.
Gold sales were 128 thousand ounces, lower than the January 2025 estimate and down from last year due to the timing of shipments. The average realized price per ounce stood at&nbsp;$3,072&nbsp;in the quarter.&nbsp;
Operating income stood at&nbsp;$1.303 billion versus&nbsp;$1.634 billion a year ago.
Operating cash flow for the quarter totaled&nbsp;$1.06 billion, compared to&nbsp;$1.90 billion a year ago.
As of March 31, Freeport-McMoRan had&nbsp;$4.4 billion in cash and equivalents, and its consolidated debt&nbsp;totaled&nbsp;$9.4 billion.
Kathleen Quirk, president and chief executive officer, said, "We remain vigilant in our efforts to reduce costs, improve efficiencies and carefully manage operating, administrative and capital spending in this uncertain macroeconomic environment."
2025&nbsp;Outlook: Freeport-McMoRan expects sales volumes of 4.0 billion pounds of copper, 1.6 million ounces of gold, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">88 million pounds of molybdenum</a>.&nbsp;
Excluding the potential impacts of tariffs, the company projects a decline in its average unit net cash costs (net of by-product credits) for U.S. copper mines for the remainder of 2025 and into 2026, compared to 2024 levels.
This reduction is expected due to efficiencies, higher volumes, and ongoing cost-reduction initiatives.
U.S. copper mine cash costs are projected at ~$3.02/lb for 2025, assuming current sales volumes, cost estimates, and an average molybdenum price of $20.00 per pound for the rest of the year.
The company expects operating cash flows of ~$7 billion and capital expenditure <a target="_blank" href="https://s22.q4cdn.com/529358580/files/doc_presentations/2025/FCX_1Q25_CC.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">of</a> $4.4 billion in 2025.
Freeport estimates that the proposed tariffs could raise the cost of goods it purchases in the U.S. by around 5%, mainly due to the pass-through effect of tariffs incurred by suppliers.

Freeport-McMoRan owns stakes in 10 copper mines, led by its 49% ownership of the Grasberg copper and gold operations in Indonesia, 55% of the Cerro Verde mine in Peru, and 72% of Morenci in Arizona. Freeport-McMoRan owns stakes in 10 copper mines, led by its 49% ownership of the Grasberg copper and gold operations in Indonesia, 55% of the Cerro Verde mine in Peru, and 72% of Morenci in Arizona. Erik Prince, a businessman and longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, has reportedly agreed to help the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) secure and tax its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities">vast mineral wealth</a>.
According <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-supporter-prince-reaches-deal-with-congo-help-secure-mineral-wealth-2025-04-17/">to</a> Reuters, he reached the agreement before the M23 rebel group <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/02/43573846/un-warns-about-escalating-conflict-dr-congo-as-rebels-seize-mining-center">launched a major offensive</a> in January 2025 that saw them seize key cities in eastern Congo, including Goma. Two sources close to Prince, a Congolese official, and two diplomats confirmed new discussions, focusing on improving tax collection and reducing cross-border smuggling of valuable minerals.
With the cash leaks in Congo's mining sector, there&#8217;s a desperate need for structure," said one source. Despite no confirmed links to the U.S. government or military, security contractors remain a possible option under future U.S. support frameworks.
Prince, best known as the founder of Blackwater—the private security firm implicated in the killing of Iraqi civilians in 2007—has operated in Africa for over a decade, providing logistics and security services for mining and oil companies. His companies have been active in Congo since 2015, though previous attempts to deploy contractors, including a 2023 proposal to send thousands to the conflict-ridden east, failed to materialize.
The DRC&#8217;s mineral wealth is staggering. The country holds an estimated 6 million metric tons of cobalt, over 57% of global reserves, essential for electric vehicle batteries. It also possesses around 75 million metric tons of copper, 150 million carats of diamonds, and vast gold, coltan, tin, and lithium deposits, most of which are extracted under poor oversight and often smuggled out of the country. KoBold Metals, a startup backed by billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, has recently approached DRC, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44456007/gates-bezos-backed-startup-makes-move-for-dr-congos-lithium">inquiring about lithium mining</a>, while copper giant Freeport-McMoran (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCX#NYSE">FCX</a>) has floated the idea about returning to the jurisdiction it exited in 2020.
Smuggling conflict minerals has been a heated topic. The DRC accused and even <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/24/12/42527087/dr-congo-fires-first-salvo-files-complaints-against-apple-over-conflict-minerals">sued Apple</a> before the French prosecutor dropped the charges, classifying them as "not sufficiently well-founded."
Sources say Prince's initial security deployment is expected in the Katanga province, particularly at copper mines near Kolwezi – a region allegedly losing up to $40 million per month in untracked mineral flows. Sources noted they expect contractors to avoid direct conflict zones, instead deploying alongside commodity inspection specialists to improve transparency and revenue collection.
