Before making headlines in 2017 with her $20 million per year contract, Pompeo had a conversation that set the wheels in motion. &#8220;I said to her: ‘I'm going to go in and ask for this much. Are you cool with that?'" Pompeo recalled on the "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jex1tGfWpno&amp;ab_channel=CallHerDaddy">Call Her Daddy</a>" podcast. &#8220;[Rhimes] was like, ‘Yeah, no one's going to give it to you. You have to ask for it.'&#8221;
She asked for—and got—$575,000 per episode, making her the highest-paid actress in a primetime drama. The deal also included backend points and producing credits, pushing her earnings beyond just a base salary.
For Pompeo, this wasn't just about money—it was about power. &#8220;I became aware at a really early age that people with money had power,&#8221; she explained.
&nbsp;&#8220;I didn't have any power as a young woman. And I didn't like the way that felt. She added, "You don't have to be with any man you don't want to be with. Pompeo was also well aware that &#8220;Grey's Anatomy&#8221; was a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/44049133/last-week-jeff-bezos-lost-3-9-billion-in-a-day-woke-up-3-9-billion-richer-now-its-gone">billion-dollar franchise</a>. The show has generated nearly $3 billion for Disney (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) since its debut, making it one of the company's most lucrative properties. Pompeo saw no reason why she shouldn't get her fair share.

A 10% decline in Canadian travel may result in 2 million fewer visits and $2.1 billion in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel">lost spending to the U.S.</a> 
That&#8217;s according to Goldman Sachs analyst Lizzie Dove, citing <a href="https://www.ustravel.org/press/potential-results-decline-canadian-travel-united-states">data</a> from the U.S. Travel Association. Dove recently conducted a deep dive into Canadian tourist exposure for airlines, cruises, lodging, and theme parks.
Canada, she notes, accounts for 26% of U.S. international tourism. In March — three months after President Donald Trump dissed then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by calling him "governor" and Canada as "the 51st state" — there was an 11% year-over-year decline in tourism. 
A &#8220;pullback in Canadian tourism is the most likely channel to create a modest drag on US GDP,&#8221; Dove wrote. 
In 2024, approximately 20.24 million Canadian tourists visited the U.S., making up over a quarter of international air travel. Mexico followed with around 17 million visitors. 
U.S. airlines have limited exposure to Canadian transborder markets, with United Airlines Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>) having the highest at 1.4% of total flights. 
Carriers like Allegiant Travel Co. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALGT#NASDAQ">ALGT</a>), Frontier, Southwest, and Spirit do not operate direct routes to Canada but may still feel demand softness in border cities, said the analyst.

Allegiant, for instance, serves U.S. border cities that rely on Canadian travelers, with these routes comprising 1.6% of its 2024 flights.
Florida, California, Nevada, New York, and Texas are top destinations for Canadian tourists, meaning airlines operating heavily in these states could see an impact. 
JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBLU#NASDAQ">JBLU</a>) has 58% of its capacity in key Canadian tourist cities, though a large portion of this is tied to New York, which only accounts for 13% of Canadian visits.
United and Allegiant have recently reported weaker demand from Canadian travelers. In response, United accelerated the retirement of 21 aircraft. 
The overall U.S.-Canada air travel market has seen route cuts at twice the rate of non-Canada flights, with 210 basis points of Canadian growth being slashed since January. 
Allegiant, despite not flying to Canada, reduced flights from Plattsburgh by 20 percentage points due to weaker demand from Canadian travelers, significantly more than the 4.4-point cut to its broader network. However, reductions were smaller in Bellingham and Niagara Falls, at 1.7 and 2.0 points, respectively.
U.S. hotel corporations have minimal exposure to Canadian tourism, despite the high volume of Canadian visitors. Hyatt Hotels Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/H#NYSE">H</a>) has the highest exposure among major hotel chains, while Wyndham Hotels &amp; Resorts Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WH#NYSE">WH</a>) and Choice Hotels International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHH#NYSE">CHH</a>) are the least affected due to their reliance on drive-to bookings.
Wyndham sees only 1% of its U.S. room bookings from Canadian travelers. Over 90% of guests drive to its hotels. Similarly, Marriott International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAR#NASDAQ">MAR</a>) estimates just 1% of U.S. room nights come from Canada. Some 96% of its bookings originate from domestic travelers.
Hyatt, with a stronger focus on luxury and resort properties, derives approximately 2% of its U.S. bookings from Canadian visitors. Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HLT#NYSE">HLT</a>) also sees 1-1.5% of its U.S. room nights booked by Canadians, with 2% of its total rooms located in Canada.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) has the highest exposure to Canadian tourism among cruise operators, though overall reliance remains low. 
An estimated 5% of NCLH's revenue comes from Canadian travelers, followed by Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) at 4% and Carnival Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) at 3.5%.
Hotel companies rely more heavily on domestic and business travelers, while cruise lines see slightly higher engagement from Canadian tourists.
Florida saw approximately 6 million international visitors in 2023, with around 1.3 million coming from Canada. Theme parks with high international attendance could feel the impact of a decline in Canadian visitors.
Comcast Corp.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) Universal theme parks are the most exposed, with around 30% of attendance coming from international tourists. 
Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) typically sees international visitors comprise between the high teens to low 20% of total guests, while United Parks &amp; Resorts Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PRKS#NYSE">PRKS</a>) has lower exposure at around 7%, down from pre-pandemic double-digit levels.
The financial impact extends beyond ticket sales. International visitors tend to spend more on park-related purchases, including hotel stays and in-park amenities, Dove said.

Tariff Tensions Could Hurt US GDP As Canadian Tourism Cools: Goldman Sachs

Movie theater operator AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMC#NYSE">AMC</a>) is betting big on premium screens to add to its revenue over the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/03/44562437/whats-going-on-with-amc-entertainment-stock-monday">next several years.</a>
The move comes with several of the top film franchises of all time having movies set for release.
What Happened: The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/12/42750888/top-anticipated-2025-movies-for-big-screen-success-and-stocks-investors-should-watch">2025 theatrical movie lineup </a>includes three Marvel films from Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) and plenty of other highly anticipated movies from franchises of old and new.
While 2025 could have a strong post-COVID-19 box office total, AMC has its sights set on 2025, 2026 and 2027.
The company recently announced it was adding 40 Dolby Cinema theaters through the end of 2027. The new additions will bring AMC's total number of Dolby premium screens to more than 200, as reported by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/31/amc-premium-screens-hollywood-movies.html">CNBC</a>.
"Premium moviegoing is defining the modern box office," Dolby Laboratories CEO Kevin Yeaman said.
Dolby Laboratories Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLB#NYSE">DLB</a>) is one of several premium screen formats and partners with AMC.
AMC also recently announced a partnership with CJ 4DPLEX for 40 4DX theaters and 25 SCREENX theaters to be opened across the U.S. and Europe beginning in the summer of 2025. This marks the first partnership between the two companies.
The premium format movie screens being added come ahead of a strong movie lineup that AMC CEO Adam Aron has been highlighting for more than a year. From 2025 to 2027, new films will be released from the Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Avatar, Marvel, DC Comics and Mission Impossible franchises.
Premium large format screens come with a higher ticket price for consumers and a way for AMC to add to its overall revenue. PLFs made up around 9.1% of the 2024 domestic box office, representing a total of $600 million split between multiple theater companies.
AMC has over 900 movie theaters and 10,000 screens worldwide as the world's largest movie theater company. The newest bets on premium format screens could add to the company's excitement for the coming box office lineup.
In <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/02/43958798/amc-q4-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-in-line-attendance-up-20-shares-climb">the fourth quarter</a>, AMC reported attendance of 62.42 million, which was up 20.2% year-over-year. The company also reported its highest fourth-quarter food and beverage per person revenue in company history.
With higher attendance and more revenue from premium screens, along with increasing food and beverage revenue, the next three years could be key to the AMC turnaround story.

AMC Post-COVID-19: For several years, Aron has discussed the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/04/38184776/amc-ceo-says-bankruptcy-is-inconceivable-as-shares-hit-52-week-lows-2025-2026-are-going-to-">post-COVID-19 recovery efforts</a> from AMC, which have included focusing on food and beverage and non-movie opportunities such as Taylor Swift concert films to offset less blockbuster movie releases.
A recent <a href="https://x.com/CEOAdam/status/1906823615737413781">tweet </a>from Aron mentioning the post-COVID-19 time period caught a reply of "the only CEO in the world still talking about covid!" from a social media user.
Aron felt the need to reply with "the facts" that people want to ignore.
"The industry-wide domestic box office in movie theatres was over $11 billion five years in a row pre-Covid. It was over $10 billion eleven years in a row pre-Covid," Aron said.
The CEO said the industry posted domestic box office of $8.8 billion in 2024, down over 20% from 2019 levels.
"When a high fixed cost industry like the movie theatre industry loses 20% of its revenue, its profits and cash balances plummet by far more."
Aron said the movie theater industry "has not fully recovered yet" and the recovery is taking longer than many expected or hoped.
"We are optimistic that a rising box office over the next year or two will be a great boon for AMC."
Aron also brushed off concerns about his salary in another <a href="https://x.com/CEOAdam/status/1907002331906077007">tweet</a>.
"I understand why you would be distraught if my salary was $23 million per year. Except that it isn't."
Aron said his salary is $1.5 million annually, as he has requested no raises. He is also paid cash bonuses related to company performance. The CEO said these amounts are less than one-third of his publicly reported total compensation, due to reporting of AMC share compensation.
"The bulk of my total compensation is in AMC stock."
Aron said he has not sold one share of AMC stock in more than three years. 
AMC Price Action: AMC stock is down 2.95% to $2.80 on Tuesday versus a 52-week trading range of $2.38 to $11.88. AMC stock is down 30.9% year-to-date in 2025.

The end of a wholesale deal with Canal+ will adversely impact streaming net adds, driving a sequential decline in net adds in the fiscal second quarter, according to the analyst.
Reif Ehrlich continues to expect DTC ARPU growth, although there could be a delayed impact of recent price increases given the mix of subscriptions and bundling.
Following strong fiscal first-quarter results, there was increased confidence in Walt Disney&#8217;s ability to hit, if not potentially exceed, their fiscal 2025 outlook.
While recent macro uncertainty adds risks, Reif Ehrlich did not see signs of underlying fundamentals coming under pressure. Moreover, while DTC will likely be an investment year, the analyst noted there will be discretion around the magnitude of spending and some benefits in DTC from recent price increases, password sharing, and a ramping advertising business.
For the fiscal second quarter, Reif Ehrlich maintained revenue of $23.4 billion and $1.25 for EPS. Additionally, she maintained fiscal 2025 revenue of $95.6 billion and EPS of $5.45.

"Shark Tank" recently completed its 16th season, its last to feature longtime shark Mark Cuban who announced it would be his last season<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/10/41271567/mark-cuban-reflects-on-shark-tanks-enduring-success-the-american-dream-is-alive-and-well"> before it aired.</a>

What Happened: Airing from Oct. 18 through March 7, the 16th season of "Shark Tank" was the latest in the show's history. The show has included a fairly consistent panel of six different sharks along with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/10/41600934/exclusive-shark-tanks-matt-higgins-on-shows-enduring-legacy-moving-beyond-mark-cuban-global">some guest sharks.</a>
More than 350 episodes have aired on ABC, which is a unit of Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>). Cuban has invested in many companies during his time on the show and will now exit the long-running business pitch show.
Episodes feature several companies looking for money from a panel of investors, offering equity in their company in exchange.

Why It's Important: There are likely two big takeaways from the latest casting announcements. Marvel is going all in on X-Men and its new 2025 films.
Fans have been begging for new X-Men films since Disney acquired Fox. Outside of the new Deadpool films, characters from the franchise have been minimally involved. The new Avengers film brings back many characters from the old X-Men films and could also set the table for more standalone X-Men films.

Twenty percent of readers said they watch some episodes every season, with 14% saying they watch most or all of the episodes. These two items put together mean that around 34% of Benzinga readers polled watch at least part of each season.

Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) suffered a setback with Snow White delivering a disappointing box office performance <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44465410/snow-white-disappoints-at-box-office-will-remake-hurt-disneys-marvel-magic-in-2025">in its opening weekend</a>.
The company is now preparing to report its fiscal second-quarter results.
Walt Disney is likely to report quarterly earnings of $1.18 per share, missing consensus of $1.21 per share, on revenue of $23.1 billion, versus consensus of $23.2 billion, according to a Wednesday note from Goldman Sachs.
The Walt Disney Analyst: : <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5a1c4e20efacff00015a984c/michael-ng">Analyst Michael Ng</a> maintained a Buy rating and price target of $140.
The Walt Disney Thesis: The direct-to-consumer (DTC) segment is likely to have benefited from &#8220;Mufasa: The Lion King,&#8221; &#8220;Moana 2,&#8221; SC+ and promotional activity, "as well as the first full-quarter of price increases implemented in October 2024," Ng said in the note.

"We continue to expect upside to F2025E DTC EBIT, led by better-than-expected opex management, as well as benefits from paid sharing initiatives and a strong content slate with DTC making progress toward its 10% (ex Hulu Live) margin target in F2026," he added.
Domestic theme park attendance is likely to have declined by 1% year-on-year due to the Easter shift and natural disasters, the analyst stated. "We're encouraged by the growth in summer bookings despite recent softness in select travel datapoints and competition from Epic Universe," he wrote.
Sports could report additional expenses of $150 million, including $100 million in sports cost inflation and $50 million from the Venu write-off, Ng said.
"We view DIS as a high quality EPS compounder at an undemanding valuation," the analyst wrote.
DIS Price Action: Shares of Walt Disney had declined by 0.76% to $100.83 at the time of publication on Wednesday.

These 5 Dan Loeb Portfolio Stocks Are Up Over 30% In The Past Year

More media companies and legacy linear network owners are launching streaming platforms, adding to the market more options for consumers than ever, which could mean a high monthly bill when it comes<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/streaming"> to streaming costs.</a>
A new survey finds that consumers are tired of spending so much and could consider canceling plans as more plan prices going up.
What Happened: As Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) pushes to add more subscribers to its already record increase in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/01/43114866/netflix-q4-earnings-record-subscribers-nfl-squid-game-push-past-highest-expectations">the fourth quarter</a>, the company could face pressure from consumers considering lowering the amount they're spending on streaming platforms monthly.
A new Deloitte report says consumers spend an average of $69 per month on streaming, up 13% year-over-year from the same report last year. Consumers subscribe to an average of four streaming platforms each month, as reported by Variety.
The bad news for streamers is that 47% of consumers surveyed said they pay too much for the streaming platforms they have. Forty-one percent said that the content on streaming platforms isn't worth the price, up five percentage points from 36% in last year's report.
The survey found that cable or satellite TV customers spend $125 per month, more than streaming customers.

Why It's Important: Streaming platforms could face pressure to keep customers as more platforms launch and as consumers look to cut costs.
The survey found that 60% of consumers said they would cancel their service if their favorite streamer raised prices by $5 per month.
More than half of consumers who subscribe to streaming platforms (54%) said they have at least one ad-supported tier, which could be to cut costs. This was up from 46% with at least one ad-supported tier last year.
Netflix and Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) have ad-supported plans and used this avenue as a way to lower churn and get consumers subscribed at lower price points and offset the subscription revenue with advertising revenue.
Price Matters: Survey respondents say $14 is the right spot for ad-free streaming platforms and $10 is the right price for ad-supported services. Platforms that price above these ranges could face consumer losses.
Netflix raised prices in January with its ad-free plan now costing $17.99 per month. The streaming leader continues to add to its content with live sports rights and events, which could help keep people subscribed all year long and justify one of the higher prices in the market.
What&#8217;s Next: Upcoming quarterly reports from media companies could be key for investors to see if the survey results hold true and people are cancelling plans. Thirty-nine percent of consumers in the survey said they canceled at least one streaming platform plan in the last six months.
AppleTV+, a streaming plan from Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), currently only offers <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/03/44336535/apple-stock-could-get-ted-lasso-boost-hit-soccer-comedy-set-for-fourth-season">an ad-free plan</a>. The platform, which has a smaller content library than rivals, has an ad-supported plan reportedly in the works. Based on this survey, the sooner that platform launches, the quicker Apple could boost its subscriber count.
