Comcast Hikes Peacock Prices Again: Will You Pay $11 A Month For Ads?

The<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports-betting"> sports betting sector</a> is one of many that could be impacted by President Donald Trump's so-called &#8220;Big Beautiful Bill.&#8221;
Roundhill Investments CEO Dave Mazza shares his thoughts on the bill's impact with Benzinga and how it could impact the stocks that are part of the Roundhill Sports Betting &amp; iGaming ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BETZ#NYSE">BETZ</a>). Mazza also discusses higher taxes for Illinois sportsbooks, the next catalysts in the sector, potential sector consolidation, and whether ESPN Bet will be a success.
Big Beautiful Bill Impact: The new One Big Beautiful Bill <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/gaming/25/07/46268222/trump-big-beautiful-bill-sneaks-90-cap-on-gambling-loss-deductions-punters-warn-new-amendment-could-end-us-professional-gaming">could change the sector </a>for large gamblers, sports bettors and daily fantasy players.
"Beginning with the 2026 tax year, the One Big Beautiful Bill caps the deductibility of gambling losses at 90 percent of winnings,&#8221; Mazza told Benzinga. &#8220;A bettor who wins and loses $100,000 in the same calendar year will still owe federal income tax on an imputed $10,000 profit – a sharp departure from the long-standing rule that allowed dollar-for-dollar offsets under IRC 165(d)." 
The <a href="https://www.roundhillinvestments.com/etf/betz/">Roundhill </a>CEO said the gaming lobby claims this amounts to a tax on the volume of players in the sector, who "already operate on razor-thin margins."
Congress members have already worked on rescinding this part of the Big Beautiful Bill, Mazza added, citing the FAIR Bet Act filed by Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.). He added that the American Gaming Association and members of the Republican Party have shown support for the act.
"The smart money in Washington pegs the odds of a reversal in the next twelve months at better than even, provided a larger tax vehicle advances."
Mazza said if the 90% cap remains, it will be professional sports bettors, poker players and daily-fantasy "sharps" that are most impacted. Experts warn that this could lead to liquidity shifting offshore and away from Las Vegas.
"While the mass-market sportsbook would muddle through, destination casino markets that rely on premium play would feel a non-trivial pinch."

Illinois Increases Fees: The state of Illinois is the first to place an additional levy on bets wagered. The state is charging 25 cents for each of the first 20 million online wagers an operator makes in a fiscal year and 50 cents for every bet after that amount.
DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DKNG#NASDAQ">DKNG</a>) and Flutter Entertainment (NYSE: FLUT), which operate the two largest US online sportsbooks, have announced they will pass the fees onto consumers in the state.
"By passing the fee straight through, the books protect most of the EBITDA that would otherwise be lost, but they also risk nudging price-sensitive customers toward rival states or the gray market," Mazza said, who added that the math on the levy is "punitive enough" for DraftKings and Flutter to pass the surcharge on.
The impact could mean fewer bettors placing low-stakes wagers, and sportsbooks may increase their minimum bet sizes in the state, he noted.
Next Catalysts for the Sector: For the sports betting sector, the biggest catalyst for years has been the launch of new states. Benzinga said new state launches have been stalling.
"Most of the easy wins are booked as more than 80 percent of U.S. adults already live in a legal market, so remaining battles are politically thorny," Mazza said.
The Roundhill CEO said Texas, Minnesota and Alabama had sports betting legislation that experienced setbacks. Oklahoma and Georgia look more promising going forward.
"In short, operators should plan for incremental launches rather than a single blockbuster state in the coming years," he said.
Mazza added that calls for consolidation in the sector have minimized, and with DraftKings and FanDuel having sizable market shares, there is "limited oxygen for mid-tier brands."
"Regulators would likely block any horizontal merger between top-five books, so expect more tuck-in deals for tech, data and iCasino assets rather than headline-grabbing megamergers."
Another potential catalyst is the continued growth of live micro-betting. Mazza said bettors are turning more to betting on items like every pitch in baseball, every possession in basketball and more. These increased betting options could help offset lower betting volume during the current season, which does not include NFL and NCAAF games.
"These engagement tools are now strategic imperatives rather than nice-to-haves."
ESPN Bet Success: Too Early To Tell? ESPN Bet was launched by PENN Entertainment (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PENN#NASDAQ">PENN</a>) through a licensing partnership with The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) in November 2023. The sportsbook has made ground in several states, but the success may be smaller than some expected, given the massive size of ESPN and the brand recognition.
"Eighteen months in, ESPN Bet is neither runaway success nor outright failure," said Mazza, adding that estimates show ESPN Bet having 3% market share for U.S. sports betting handle after initially launching with around 7% share.
The sportsbook's market share is shy of double-digit goals from Penn, but also better than the market share the casino company had when it ran the Barstool Sportsbook.
Penn's first-quarter financials also showed the best EBITDA since 2022 for the digital division, Mazza noted, which could suggest costs are stabilizing.
For Disney, Mazza said the partnership has brought the company brand-licensing revenue and "richer engagement data" with minimal risk. A 2026 opt-out window could become closely watched as Penn decides if it is winning with the current market share.

Here's who the senator believes could be bribing the president for favorable outcomes.
What Happened: Several public companies <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45934225/big-tech-companies-helped-fund-trumps-inauguration-now-they-could-be-funding-his-military-birthday-parade">helped fund Donald Trump's inauguration</a> and also a military parade on July 4. Some of those companies may have done so to settle past bad relations with Trump or to encourage favorable outcomes moving forward.
Warren believes companies are now donating money to Trump's future presidential library to seek favorable outcomes.

The senator said over $63 million has been donated to the future presidential library from companies, according to a <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/elizabeth-warran-donald-trump-presidential-library-bribery_n_68766871e4b0eefef0c4f890?vp">report </a>from HuffPost. Donations from special interest groups bring the total of donations to over $500 million, according to the report.
"The timing of these donations — coming while Trump sits in office and makes critical decisions that may impact the same donors — raises serious ethical concerns about potential bribery and influence-peddling," Warren said.
Here are companies named in Warren's report and a look at why the donations could be questionable according to the senator:
Paramount Global: Donating $16 million to presidential library as part of settlement from the "60 Minutes" lawsuit. Donation could be made to help complete the company's merger with Skydance, which requires approval from the Trump administration.
Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>): Donating $22 million to presidential library. Donation comes after Trump previously sued the social media company for having his Facebook and Instagram accounts banned. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration and attended the ceremony.
ABC News, a unit of Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>): Donating $15 million to the presidential library, which comes as the company settled a defamation suit with Trump. ABC News settled in 2024 after Trump had won the 2025 election.
X: Donating $10 million to the presidential library. The company owned by Elon Musk similarly banned Trump from its platform and reinstated him and settled a lawsuit over the ban. Musk and Trump had a strong relationship until a recent falling out. Musk's companies X, Tesla and SpaceX have federal contracts and could be impacted by the Trump administration for current and future contract awards.
Qatari Government: Donating $400 million jet to Trump that will later be transferred to Trump's presidential library. The donation could be seen as a potential move to land favorable deals and relationships between the two countries.
Instant Pot: Donating proceeds from Trump-themed "45/47 Collaboration" to the future presidential library.
Lenox Corporation: Donating proceeds from Trump-themed products to future presidential library. Company sells tableware and collectibles and has future plans for a line of porcelain dinnerware with Trump's face.
Soho Apparel Group: Donating proceeds to future presidential library. Apparel supplier has plans for launching Trump-inspired merchandise.
"We could be seeing giant companies like Paramount and Meta and foreign countries like Qatar pay Trump off in plain sight. Government should work for the American people, not just whichever giant company or foreign government can dump the most money into the president's future library," Warren added.
Money raised from dinners hosted by Trump at Mar-a-Lago, attended by business leaders, is also going toward his future presidential library.

What's Next: Warren's report is meant to raise concerns about the ethics surrounding the donations. The report said that leftover funds from Trump's inauguration fund are also expected to be sent to his library fund.
With Warren's report, the senator and a group of Democrats in Congress are now pushing the Presidential Library Anti-Corruption Act of 2025, as reported by Variety.
"This boils down to a simple question: Who does the government work for? We believe it works for the American people, not ‘foreign nationals' or multibillion-dollar corporations that donate millions of dollars to a president's library," Warren told reporters Wednesday.
With the backing of only Democratic members of Congress, the bill could struggle to gain traction in the Republican-controlled Congress, which has mostly shown loyalty to Trump.
"Presidential libraries should be monuments to history, not backdoor vehicles for influence," the sponsors of the bill said.
While there are laws around donations to presidential campaigns or inaugural committees, there are not currently restrictions on donations to presidential libraries, the lawmakers said. This means presidents can try to win over donations and use them through their library fund without restriction, according to the report.
Under the terms of the Presidential Library Anti-Corruption Act, presidents would not be able to fundraise for their library outside of donations from nonprofits until they leave office. The bill would also require quarterly disclosures of donations of $200 or more made while a president is in office and for up to five years after leaving.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) may be investing heavily in the Formula 1 racing league following the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/entertainment/25/07/46279922/f1-is-apples-biggest-box-office-win-so-why-is-the-stock-stalling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent box office success</a> of the "F1" movie, which stars and was produced by Brad Pitt.
What Happened: Tech giant Apple <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/23/10/35034995/apple-could-be-revving-up-formula-one-global-rights-thanks-to-lionel-messi-what-it-could-mean-for-">has been rumored</a> to be looking at the media rights for the Formula 1 racing league, which is owned by Liberty Formula One (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FWONA#NASDAQ">FWONA</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FWONK#NASDAQ">FWONK</a>), before, but this time it may be more serious.
A new <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/ef6bbb12-1ef5-4fc7-bff5-77d000c36bff">report </a>from the Financial Times says Apple is in talks to land the U.S. rights for Formula 1 races, which are up for grabs after ESPN's exclusive negotiation window closed.
ESPN, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/22/06/27850945/espn-beats-out-amazon-comcast-and-netflix-for-formula-1-rights-here-are-the-details" target="_blank" rel="noopener">renewed its U.S. rights in 2022</a>, beating out interest from Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA). ESPN pays a reported $75 million to $90 million annually for the rights, up from its previous annual payments of $5 million under its previous rights deal.
Reports of Apple being interested in landing the U.S. rights come with the "F1" movie being Apple's highest-grossing theatrical film of all time. The film has <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl2507374593/?ref_=bo_hm_rd">grossed </a>$112.7 million domestically and $301.2 million worldwide in 12 days and could go on to outgross all other Apple theatrical releases combined.

Why It's Important: Apple's streaming platform AppleTV+ has geared more towards sports in recent years, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/22/06/27710289/apple-ramps-up-sports-content-with-major-league-soccer-deal-what-investors-and-sports-fans-">landing the exclusive rights</a> to Major League Soccer and some rights from Major League Baseball.
The streaming platform currently charges $10 per month and is reportedly developing an ad-supported plan.
Securing Formula 1 rights could better position Apple TV+ as a major streaming platform and also provide the company with more advertising opportunities for its rumored ad-supported plan.
Formula 1 could struggle in picking a winner if ESPN is interested in renewing the rights, given its past history with the league. The "F1" movie from Apple has likely brought new fans to the sport, similar to what the docuseries "Drive to Survive" from Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) did for the sport <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/21/04/20777635/could-netflix-help-shares-of-formula-one">in recent years.</a>
In fact, Apple could be raising the cost of the U.S. rights it would need to pay, thanks to the success of its film.
Interest in Formula 1 has risen in the U.S. in recent years thanks to Netflix and more races being held in the country. In 2025, the league has three races with one in Miami already having taken place in May, one in Texas coming in October and one in Las Vegas coming in November.
The league is also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/11/42178255/formula-1-stock-hits-52-week-high-announces-11th-team-with-general-motorsandretti-global-after-max-verstappens-fourth-straight-title">adding an 11th team</a><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/11/42178255/formula-1-stock-hits-52-week-high-announces-11th-team-with-general-motorsandretti-global-after-max-verstappens-fourth-straight-title" target="_blank" rel="noopener">,</a> the American-based Cadillac F1 team, which could also renew interest in the sport across America.
ESPN's <a href="https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2025/07/espn-formula-1-coverage-enjoying-record-breaking-season-of-viewership/">viewership </a>for Formula 1 in 2025 is off to an impressive start, with 11 of the 12 races having year-over-year viewership growth and seven of the races having viewership records. The league's recent British Grand Prix averaged 1.5 million viewers on ESPN2, up 19% from last year's race and the largest audience in the U.S. for that race ever.
Races are averaging 1.3 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC, up 7% from last year's figures at this point in the season and up 17% from last year's full-season average. Younger viewership (age 18-49) is up double-digit percentages for both the season-to-date timeframe and full-season averages.
One factor that could help increase viewership is parity in the league. After winning the F1 championship for the last four seasons, Max Verstappen is currently in third place for the 2025 season. Before Verstappen&#8217;s four-season wins, Lewis Hamilton won four straight seasons. Hamilton and Verstappen have won 10 of the last 11 seasons. With some new drivers at the top and the possibility of new champions, viewers may be more engaged this year.
Apple may have to compete with ESPN and others for the Formula 1 rights, but given the success of the movie and its recent focus on sports rights, it could be a perfect fit.

What Happened: Fans of Discovery Channel and "Shark Week" are waiting until later this month, July 20-26, to view content that's part of the 37th annual Shark Week. Ahead of this content, consumers have options to watch shark-themed content from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/04/44877995/netflix-crushes-q1-says-its-working-hard-to-improve-and-expand-its-offering">streaming giant Netflix</a> and another cable company.
Netflix launched "All the Sharks," a new reality competition on July 4. News of Netflix taking SharkFest and Shark Week head on comes <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/entertainment/25/06/45978982/streaming-dethrones-tv-giants-netflix-youtube-lead-the-takeover">after streaming viewership </a>for the month of May surpassed the total of broadcast and cable television combined for the first time ever with a 44.8% market share to 44.2% market share, according to Nielsen data.
