Private sector job growth exceeded expectations in March, signaling a surprisingly resilient labor market even as U.S. businesses face growing uncertainty over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">the potential impact of tariffs.</a>
U.S. private employers added 155,000 jobs in March, according to the latest Employment Report from Automatic Data Processing.
The figure represents a notable pickup from February's upwardly revised total of 84,000 and comes in well above the market forecast of 105,000.
&#8220;Despite policy uncertainty and downbeat consumers, the bottom line is this: The March topline number was a good one for the economy and employers of all sizes, if not necessarily all sectors,&#8221; said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Where Did Jobs Grow In March?</h3>
The latest figures showed job gains across both service-providing and goods-producing sectors.
Goods-producing industries added 24,000 positions in March, with manufacturing contributing 13,000 new jobs. 
Meanwhile, service-providing sectors expanded by 132,000 jobs, led by professional and business services, which added 57,000 roles. However, trade, transportation, and utilities shed 6,000 positions.
The ADP report also pointed to a continued easing in wage growth. Annual pay increases stood at 4.6% for job stayers, while job changers saw a 6.5% rise.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) – as tracked by the&nbsp;Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>),&nbsp;fell by 0.2% after the report.
Futures on major U.S. indices were sharply lower during premarket trading in New York. The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) was 1.2% lower by 8:25 a.m. ET.

Japan's Index Falls In Correction Territory, Europe Declines On Trade Fears; Gold Surges To New Record - Global Markets Today While US Slept

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge rose more than anticipated in February, underscoring the bumpy road back to the 2% target and throwing cold water on expectations for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">imminent interest rate cuts.</a>
According to data released Friday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index increased by 2.5% year-over-year, matching both the previous reading and economist forecasts of 2.5%. On a monthly basis, headline PCE rose 0.3%, in line with estimates.
Stripping out volatile food and energy prices, the core PCE price index—the Fed's favorite metric for inflation—climbed 2.8% from a year ago, slightly up from January's upwardly revised 2.7% and above expectations of 2.7%. 
The monthly core PCE figure accelerated to 0.4%, surpassing the 0.3% consensus estimate.
The hotter-than-expected inflation data could potentially dent market optimism for near-term monetary easing. 
Before the release, fed futures markets had priced in a roughly 70% probability of a rate cut by June and cumulatively 63 basis points of cuts by December, according to CME FedWatch data.
In a sign of consumer resilience despite sticky inflation, personal spending bounced back in February, rising 0.4% month-over-month after a 0.3% contraction in January, but missing expectations for a 0.5% increase. 
Personal income growth accelerated to 0.8%, above January's 0.7% and well beyond the 0.4% estimate. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: Wall Street Flashes Red Lights </h3>
Futures on major U.S. stock indexes fell in premarket trading Friday. The S&amp;P 500 contracts slid 0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.5%, and Dow Jones futures declined 0.2%. Premarket moves pushed the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) near the flatline for the week. 
The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) –&nbsp;slightly trimmed session gains, up 0.1%.

Fed's Favorite Inflation Gauge Rises More Than Expected In February, Casting Doubt On Near-Term Rate Cuts

On Thursday, March 27th, U.S. markets closed in red amid market jitters over President Trump&#8217;s proposed 25% tariff on imported cars, hitting automakers like GM and Ford hard. Tesla and Apple saw slight gains. Investors remain cautious due to Trump&#8217;s unpredictable trade stance. The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq are heading toward negative Q1 finishes in 2025.

Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Falls On Auto Tariff Concerns And Gold Hits All-Time High - Global Markets Today While US Slept

A U.S. dollar bounce in reaction to imminent reciprocal tariff announcements might be the perfect moment to cash out before deeper economic tensions unravel the greenback, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">according to Bank of America. </a>
In its latest FX Viewpoint report, the team led by Athanasios Vamvakidis reaffirmed a bearish outlook for the dollar beyond the near term, citing diverging policy paths between the U.S. and Europe.
While the dollar may gain ground following the tariff rollout, Bank of America said the rally would likely be short-lived as stagflation risks mount in the U.S. and Europe accelerates its fiscal and structural stimulus.
&#8220;Most likely, this would be a USD rally to sell,&#8221; the note stated. 
At the time of this writing, the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) is down 3% year-to-date, while the Invesco CurrencyShares Euro Currency Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXE#NYSE">FXE</a>) has gained 4.5% over the same period.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dollar Set To Gain On Tariffs, Yet Fundamentals Remain Shaky</h1>
&#8220;The USD could still strengthen short-term on high tariffs, but we remain bullish EURUSD for the year on stagflationary U.S. policies and historic EU reforms,&#8221; Vamvakidis said.
Historically, the U.S. dollar's response to tariffs has been mixed. 
While trade barriers can curb imports and boost inflation — supporting the dollar short term — they also threaten growth and trigger risk aversion, which can weigh on the currency over time.
Ahead of the April 2 tariff implementation, Bank of America observed that hedge funds resumed dollar buying after unwinding stretched long positions earlier this year.
According to analysts, the overall USD market position is now neutral.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">How Could The Fed Respond To Stagflation</h1>
Bank of America maintains a bearish medium-term view on the greenback, driven by what it sees as a stagflationary U.S. policy mix: high tariffs, fiscal tightening and unclear monetary direction from the Federal Reserve.
The market has already priced in four rate cuts this year, up from just 1.5 cuts at the start of 2025. That shift stems from expectations that the Fed will prioritize economic support over reacting to temporary inflation spikes caused by tariffs.
"If the Fed hikes in response to inflation, we would expect the USD to strengthen again," Vamvakidis said. 
Yet, he warned that such strength could be short-lived, as tighter policy may eventually lead to a sharp equity sell-off and economic contraction — bringing the dollar back down.
Bank of America's FX desk says government spending cuts and higher tariffs are defining the policy backdrop, dragging the U.S. closer to stagnating growth combined with elevated inflation.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Europe's Comeback: Can The Euro Overtake?</h1>
While the U.S. faces policy uncertainty, Europe is quietly orchestrating its most ambitious economic transformation in over a decade. 
Vamvakidis said the European Union&#8217;s push to spend 800 billion euros on defense and invest in infrastructure is a historic pivot, especially for Germany, which is executing a 12-year fiscal expansion worth at least 22% of GDP.
The fiscal shift marks a break from years of austerity. 
"These are game changers," Bank of America said, adding that the market is underestimating the long-term impact of the EU&#8217;s reform agenda. However, it also warned that the shift would take time to fully materialize. "It is going to be a marathon, not a sprint."
The bank sees the euro-dollar exchange rate rallying to 1.15 levels by December 2025, up nearly 7% from current levels.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep the fed funds rate unchanged between 4.25% and 4.50% for the second consecutive meeting, likely emphasizing the need for further clarity on inflation trends before considering any <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44364688/feds-march-meeting-expected-to-signal-no-hurry-on-rate-cuts-as-powell-likely-to-tread-carefully">easing of monetary policy. </a>

Asia And Europe Markets Mixed; Gold Holds Near Record High On Safe Haven Demand - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Speculators are dialing back expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts in 2025 ahead of the March Federal Open Market Committee meeting, as inflation concerns cast doubt on the central bank's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44364688/feds-march-meeting-expected-to-signal-no-hurry-on-rate-cuts-as-powell-likely-to-tread-carefully">willingness to ease policy.</a>
Data from Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated betting platform, indicates that traders are shifting bets toward fewer than three rate cuts. 
The most favored scenario now anticipates two cuts, carrying a 24% implied probability. Notably, the likelihood of just one rate cut jumped seven percentage points in a single day to 19%.
Betting-implied odds currently indicate that the most preferred outcome among retail bettors is two rate cuts at a 24% implied chance.
The Fed's December &#8220;dot plot&#8221; signaled a median expectation for two rate cuts in 2025, a downgrade from the four cuts it had projected in September. 
While retail bettors have turned more cautious, broader financial markets remain slightly more optimistic. Fed funds futures, tracked by the CME FedWatch tool, fully price in three rate cuts by December 2024, with a 35% probability of a fourth cut. 
This discrepancy suggests that institutional investors may still believe in a more accommodative Fed policy than retail traders do.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's Driving The Shift?</h3>
One factor weighing on rate-cut expectations is the risk that the Fed could revise inflation projections higher, particularly in response to higher trade tariffs mandated by President Donald Trump. 
December, the central bank had already raised its 2025 inflation forecast, projecting headline Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation at 2.5%, up from 2.1% in September. Core PCE inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, was also revised up to 2.5% from 2.2%.
According to both Bank of America and Goldman Sachs estimates, inflation estimates could be upwardly revised to 2.7% on Wednesday. 
Betting-implied odds tracked by Kalshi reveal that speculators expect inflation to average 3% in 2025.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Dovish Tilt Or Continued Caution?</h3>
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has maintained a wait-and-see stance. Last week, he reiterated that the Fed does not need to rush into rate changes, reinforcing the need for more economic clarity before making any moves.
The consensus among economists is that the Fed will hold rates steady at 4.25%-4.50% at this week's meeting. Betting markets imply a near-unanimous probability of no change, but the focus will be on the Fed's revised economic outlook.
"The Fed will most likely indicate they remain data dependent," Chris Fasciano, chief market strategist at Commonwealth Financial Network, said in an email.
"Considering the better-than-expected CPI and PPI data released last week, if this trend continues it should allow the Fed to continue their rate cut path later in the year."
"The US Federal Reserve is widely expected to stay put this month. The market's focus will be on the guidance and the updated FOMC forecast," said Julien Lafargue, chief market strategist at Barclays Private Bank and Wealth Management.
He added that the Fed's projections may reflect weaker GDP growth, but the dot plot is unlikely to show a major shift.
The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – fell to a six-month low on Tuesday, as fears over U.S. economic performance persist among investors.

Speculators Trim 2025 Rate-Cut Bets Ahead Of March Fed Meeting As Inflation Risks Rise

Asia And Europe Markets Rise, Gold Holds Above $3,000 - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Consumer confidence in the U.S. plunged to its lowest level in four months, raising concerns about a slowing economy and persistent inflation, according to data released Friday <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">by the University of Michigan</a>. 
With inflation expectations jumping to their highest level in decades, fears of a stagflationary environment—where growth stagnates while inflation remains elevated—are mounting.
The University of Michigan said its preliminary March Consumer Sentiment Index fell from February's 64.7 to 57.9 points, well below economists&#8217; expectations of 63.1. This marks an 11% monthly drop and a staggering 22% decline from December 2024.
The report also showed that consumer expectations for future economic conditions plummeted, with the Consumer Expectations Index falling to 54.2 from 64.0, well below the 64.3 consensus forecast. 
Meanwhile, the Current Conditions Index, which measures consumers' assessment of their present financial situation, dropped slightly to 63.5 from 65.7.
Year-ahead inflation expectations jumped from 4.3% in February to 4.9% in March, the highest since November 2022. 
Long-run inflation expectations surged from 3.5% to 3.9%, marking the largest increase since 1993.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's Driving the Decline In Confidence?</h3>
The report revealed that confidence deteriorated across all demographic and political groups. 
Sentiment fell "consistently across all groups by age, education, income, wealth, political affiliations, and geographic regions," Joanne Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers, said. 
According to the survey, consumers are increasingly worried about inflation, business conditions, stock markets, and labor markets.
Frequent shifts in economic policy and uncertainty around government actions are making it increasingly difficult for consumers to plan for the future, Hsu said.
Even though Republicans initially felt more optimistic after the 2024 elections, their expectations index still fell 10% in March. Independents and Democrats reported even steeper declines of 12% and 24%, respectively.
The spike in both short-term and long-term inflation expectations could challenge the Federal Reserve&#8217;s plans for potential rate cuts in 2025, as persistent price pressures remain a top concern for consumers.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>
The S&amp;P 500 trimmed session gains following the UMich sentiment report. The index – as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) – was up 1.5% before the release but moderated to a 0.7% increase by 10:15 a.m. ET.
Treasury yields were higher for the session, with the 10-year yield rising to 4.30%, reflecting concerns that persistent inflation could delay Fed rate cuts. 
The U.S. dollar index – tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – dipped 0.1%, heading for its second consecutive week of declines.

On Thursday, March 13, U.S. markets ended notably lower, with the S&amp;P 500 entering <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44317410/sp-500-enters-technical-correction-as-trade-war-fears-rattle-markets" rel="noreferrer noopener">correction</a> territory as escalating U.S. tariffs overshadowed encouraging inflation data.
Despite cooler-than-expected PPI and CPI readings and steady jobless claims suggesting inflation is easing, and the labor market remains strong, investor sentiment deteriorated. A broad selloff, led by losses in tech megacaps like the &#8220;Magnificent 7,&#8221; dragged major indexes down. Trade tensions flared as the EU retaliated against U.S. metal tariffs.
In economic data, U.S. producer prices were flat in February, missing expectations of a 0.3% rise after a revised 0.6% gain in January. Jobless claims fell by 2,000 to 220,000, below the forecast of 225,000.

Most S&amp;P 500 sectors fell Thursday, led by losses in consumer discretionary, real estate, and communication services, while utilities ended higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.30% to close at 40,813.57, the S&amp;P 500 slid 1.39% to 5,521.52, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.96% to 17,303.01.

<li>Hong Kong&#8217;s Hang Seng increased 2.12%, ending the session at 23,959.98.</li>
<li>Chinese stocks rallied on hopes of new economic stimulus, including possible PBOC liquidity measures and policies to boost consumption ahead of Monday&#8217;s press conference with top officials.</li>

Natural Gas declined 0.63% to $4.085.
Gold was trading higher by 0.66% at $3,010.96, Silver was up 1.36% to $34.773, and Copper rose 0.04% to $4.9270.
Gold surged to a record high near $3,000 amid trade war fears and rate cut expectations. Strong haven demand, ETF inflows, and Fed policy outlook continue to boost sentiment.
