As the third-quarter earnings season approaches, Goldman Sachs has issued a note identifying key stock opportunities for investors looking to profit <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41255250/banks-gear-up-for-earnings-season-15-top-stock-picks-including-citigroup-morgan-stanley-and-truist">from financial results.</a>
Analyst John Marshall and his team shared their insights on Thursday, highlighting 18 stocks that could benefit from upward earnings revisions and seven stocks likely to face downward revisions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The &#8216;Stock Picker&#8217;s Year&#8217;: 10% Upside In S&amp;P 500</h3>
Goldman Sachs analysts call 2024 "the year of the stock picker," emphasizing the importance of selective investing in a volatile earnings environment.
According to the investment bank&#8217;s latest projections, the average S&amp;P 500 stock could see a 10% upside over the next 12 months. 
"We see relief rally potential," Marshall stated in his note. "Directional positioning in the options market is balanced, a much better set-up than this time last quarter."
The analysts also observed that activity in options markets, both from hedge funds and retail traders, has decreased recently, signaling a "wait-and-see" approach as investors prepare for third-quarter earnings reports and the upcoming U.S. elections.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Earnings Season Volatility Remains Elevated</h3>
Goldman Sachs highlighted that single-stock volatility surrounding earnings events remains at a 14-year high. 
This trend, driven by critical market debates on topics like artificial intelligence, interest rates, and the upcoming election, is expected to continue through the remainder of the year.
&#8220;We expect earnings day moves to remain elevated as most of the key debates for the market have winners and losers in the equity space,&#8221; the note added. 
With this heightened volatility, the firm continues to recommend options-based strategies, advising investors to consider buying options ahead of earnings events and selling options between earnings periods to capitalize on price movements.

On Sept. 19, Jefferies analyst Paul Zimbardo initiated coverage on Dominion Energy with a Hold rating and announced a price target of $58.
Cramer said he likes Dutch Bros Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BROS#NYSE">BROS</a>). &#8220;I&#8217;m glad that they slowed their expansion,&#8221; he added.

For the third quarter, LyondellBasell expects margins to gain from the lower costs of natural gas and natural gas liquids used in its North American and Middle Eastern production against higher oil-based expenses in most other locations. With the ongoing summer driving season, oxyfuel margins are projected to stay higher than historical levels because of high octane premiums.&nbsp;
LYB intends to operate its assets in line with market demand in the third quarter, with average operating rates of 85% for North American olefins and polyolefins (O&amp;P) assets, 80% for European O&amp;P assets and 75% for Intermediates &amp; Derivatives.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Aug. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- LyondellBasell (LYB) today announced it entered into an agreement to acquire full ownership of APK AG in Merseburg, Germany. Enabled by its technology, the acquisition positions LYB to grow and upgrade its Circular and Low Carbon Solutions business.
Closing of the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. LYB believes APK's solvent-based recycling technology is a perfect fit with its already existing mechanical and advanced recycling technologies. Therefore, it already invested in the company in the past and made collaborative efforts on bringing the technology to scale. By acquiring APK, LYB secures the future of the company after it entered into insolvency at the end of May 2024.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYB#NYSE">LYB</a>) reported second-quarter fiscal 2024 revenues of $10.55 billion, up from $10.306 billion a year ago, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/08/n40125912/lyondellbasell-reports-second-quarter-2024-earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of $10.44 billion.</a>
Adjusted EBITDA stood at $1.37 billion (-5.3% Y/Y), and the margin contracted by 107 bps to 13%. Adjusted EPS stood at $2.24, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of $2.23.</a>
Second-quarter volumes saw a boost from higher production and improving seasonal demand. In North America, olefins and polyolefins volumes rose, supported by favorable ethane and natural gas costs that bolstered integrated margins.
In Europe, integrated polyethylene margins grew due to the increased use of advantaged LPG feedstocks.
&#8220;Increased production from LYB&#8217;s assets, higher integrated margins, and rising seasonal demand drove sequential improvements in second quarter profitability.&nbsp; Underlying business results increased by nearly 30 percent over the first quarter.&nbsp; We continue to make significant strides on our ambitions to grow and upgrade our core businesses as part of our three-pillar strategy to unlock value,&#8221; commented Peter Vanacker, LyondellBasell&#8217;s chief executive officer.
The company&#8217;s strong cash conversion resulted in $1.3 billion in cash from operating activities. The company invested $484 million in capital expenditures and returned $513 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.&nbsp;
LYB held $2.9 billion in cash and short-term investments and $7.0 billion in available liquidity at the end of the quarter.
The company divested the EO&amp;D business for $700 million while investing ~$500 million to acquire a 35% stake in the feedstock-advantaged NATPET joint venture in Saudi Arabia.
Q3 Outlook: The company expects margins to continue to benefit from low costs for natural gas and natural gas liquids utilized in LYB&#8217;s North American and Middle East production relative to higher <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">oil-based costs in most other regions.</a>
LYB expects to operate its assets in line with market demand with average operating rates of 85% for North American olefins and polyolefins (O&amp;P) assets, 80% for European O&amp;P assets, and 75% for Intermediates &amp; Derivatives assets.&nbsp;
Price Action: LYB shares traded lower by 2.18% at $96.14 at the last check Friday.
