Benzinga Bulls And Bears: Chevron, Microsoft, Nike — And Tariffs Have Automotive Sector Reeling

Risk sentiment deteriorated sharply in the second half of the week after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imported automobiles, compounding concerns <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44506717/trumps-25-auto-tariff-raises-will-cast-shadow-on-interest-rates-says-economist-tesla-investor-gary-black-says-president-found-further-ways-to-push-the-economy-into-recession-today">about rising inflationary pressures.</a>
On Wednesday evening, the White House revealed plans to impose a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44517885/trump-slaps-25-tariffs-on-autos-what-it-means-for-your-next-car-purchase">25% tariff on auto imports,</a> in addition to a set of reciprocal tariffs expected to be unveiled next week. The administration cited national security risks as the justification for the measures, which may also extend to auto parts by May.
The policy shift sent shockwaves across the automotive industry. Michigan-based giants General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) posted steep losses in the wake of the announcement. In contrast, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) — both of which manufacture all their vehicles domestically — proved more resilient.
According to Goldman Sachs estimates, the tariffs could push vehicle prices up by $5,000 to $15,000, adding significant cost <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44515578/trumps-25-tariff-set-to-hike-imported-car-prices-up-to-15000-higher-goldman-sachs-warns">pressure on American consumers.</a>
The market impact didn't stop at autos. Broader sectors were also dragged lower amid fears Trump could escalate trade tensions next week with key commercial partners, especially as the U.S. trade deficit <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44513963/us-gdp-growth-upwardly-revised-in-q4-trade-deficit-slightly-narrows-as-auto-exports-soar-in-february">remains near record highs.</a>
Tariff tensions are now bleeding into inflation data. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge — the core Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — rose 2.8% year-over-year in February, surpassing expectations of 2.7%. The unexpected acceleration further complicates the Federal Reserve's case for near-term rate cuts.
But the worst surprise came Friday. The University of Michigan's consumer survey revised inflation expectations even higher. Americans now expect inflation to average 4.1% over the next five years, up 0.2 percentage points from earlier estimates and the highest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">level since February 1993.</a>
Overall consumer sentiment plunged to its lowest level since November 2022, as households grow increasingly uneasy about the labor market outlook.
Amid the prevailing uncertainty, gold reaffirmed its status as a safe-haven asset, climbing to new record highs by week's end.
Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44524354/us-debt-to-explode-past-world-war-ii-highs-threatens-growth-for-decades-cbo-says">Congressional Budget Office delivered</a> another wake-up call: there&#8217;s no end in sight to America's growing debt burden. The national debt is projected to surpass its World War II peak by 2029, and soar to 156% of GDP by 2055 — with no signs of slowing thereafter.

Trump's 25% Auto Tariffs Rattle Wall Street, Fed's Favorite Inflation Gauge Surges, Consumer Price Worries Rocket: This Week In Markets

President Donald Trump&#8216;s 25% tariffs on auto imports could threaten to upend the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/automotive">entire U.S. automotive industry</a>.
How? According to Bank of America, car prices will be higher, and millions of unit sales could be wiped out.<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas"> </a>
In a report titled &#8220;Chicken Tax 2.0 Goes Whole Hog,&#8221; released on Thursday, analyst John Murphy, CFA, said the 25% tariff announced by Trump earlier this week could disrupt the sale of 2.5 million to 3.2 million vehicles annually, or up to 20% of the total U.S. auto market.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why A Chicken Tax 2.0?</h3>
The new auto tariffs revive and expand the logic of the original 1960s-era "chicken tax" — a 25% duty initially imposed on light trucks in retaliation for a European tax on American poultry.
Trump's latest version applies a 25% tariff on imported cars, light trucks, and key auto parts. It also includes engines, transmissions, and electrical components. The new rules take effect April 3 and will be applied on top of upcoming &#8220;reciprocal tariffs.&#8221;
The White House clarified that vehicles and parts that meet United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement standards will face tariffs only on their non-U.S. content. That will significantly reduce the cost impact for roughly 4 million vehicles annually imported from Canada and Mexico.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Could Be The Impact?</h3>
About 7.6 million light vehicles are imported into the U.S. each year. Murphy estimates that even with the USMCA relief, the policy could lift prices across much of the market and trigger major shifts in both consumer demand and manufacturing footprints.
Bank of America estimates that if the entire 25% tariff is passed through, vehicle sales could drop by 3.2 million units per year — a 20% hit to the base trend of roughly 16 million units.
In a milder scenario where automakers absorb some of the cost and only 15% is passed on to consumers, the loss would still amount to about 2.5 million vehicles, or roughly 15% of the market.
At a transaction price threshold of $48,000, which currently segments the U.S. auto market almost evenly, the impact would shift significantly. About 65% of vehicles sold today are priced below $48,000. With full tariff pass-through, that share would fall to 44%. 
If automakers try to pass on the full 25% tariff to consumers to protect their profit margins — assuming average transaction prices of $48,000 and a 10% earnings before interest and tax margin — car prices could surge by as much as $10,000 per vehicle.
&#8220;We don&#8217;t expect consumers would absorb the price increase in full. Importing original equipment manufacturers are more likely to sell vehicles at breakeven until they rebalance the production footprint,&#8221; Murphy said. 
&#8220;The Trump Administration would also like to show progress in getting a portion of the about 7.6-million imported vehicles to be produced in the U.S.. This&nbsp;could mean&nbsp;about 30&nbsp;production plants, about 105 thousand&nbsp;direct jobs, and potentially over 1 million of total jobs, he added.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Which Automakers Stand To Gain?</h3>
As imports become pricier, U.S.-based automakers could gain a competitive edge. 
&#8220;Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>), and Lucid Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) are the only OEMs that produce all of their vehicles sold in the US in the country,&#8221; the report stated.
Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) may also benefit as imports account for 20% of its total volumes. 
On the contrary, General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) appears highly exposed to the tariffs as it imports nearly half of its vehicles.
&#8220;GM will have a lot of rebalancing to do,&#8221; Murphy stated.

Wall Street woke up to some red flags on Thursday as auto stocks and associated ETFs crashed after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on foreign-made vehicles on Wednesday evening. The action, directed toward strengthening domestic manufacturing, shocked the industry, with automakers and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mobility">auto-themed ETFs taking a hit.</a>
ETFs that were tied to the automobile sector immediately felt the impact after Trump made his tariff pronouncement. ETFs focused on autos, particularly leveraged ETFs, had major falls as investors processed the effect of the increased vehicle expenses and the prospect of interference with the international supply chain.
Leveraged ETFs have the tendency to exaggerate market movements, and in this instance, they amplified the bearish pressure on the auto sector. The rout was especially vicious for funds following conventional carmakers, owing to their widespread use of imported parts and international production chains.

Auto ETFs In The Red
Auto-themed ETFs followed suit in the downward trend, with significant declines on Friday in leveraged funds:
Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 2X Shares (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLL#NASDAQ">TSLL</a>): -6%
This leveraged ETF is created to offer twice the daily performance of Tesla&#8217;s stock. Since Tesla is exposed to global supply chains, the tariffs have caused uncertainty in terms of production cost and margins. Although Tesla&#8217;s domestic factories provide some insulation, Chinese imported parts may still inflate production costs, resulting in the ETF&#8217;s precipitous fall. TSLL&#8217;s value inched up about 0.7% on Thursday, but was down 6.8% on Friday as of writing.
Fidelity Electric Vehicles and Future Transportation ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDRV#NASDAQ">FDRV</a>): -4.4%
In contrast to leveraged ETFs, FDRV is a traditional ETF that follows electric vehicle and transport-related stocks. It was relatively flat on Thursday but fell 4% on Friday at the time of publishing, as concerns regarding elevated costs and supply chain woes worsened in the EV industry.
Direxion Daily Electric and Autonomous Vehicles Bull 2X Shares (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EVAV#NYSE">EVAV</a>): -9.8%
This ETF targets electric and autonomous car firms, which have many global supply chains. Although EV producers such as Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Rivian (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) initially benefited from their home-market manufacturing advantages, worries about sourcing parts and cost inflation caused EVAV&#8217;s value to fall 1.5% on Thursday, dropping another 9.8% at the time of publication on Friday.

Markets faltered on Friday, with Wall Street reeling as investors hurried to shed risk in the face of mounting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">inflation and tariff uncertainties.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.1% by 1:30 p.m. trading in New York, on track to end the week with losses. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2.6%, and the Dow fell 1.7%. 
All members of the Magnificent Seven group were in the red, with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) marking the widest drops, both down 4.4%.
Earlier on Friday, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditure price index – rose 2.8% on a yearly basis in February, surprising estimates of 2.7%. 
Investor anxiety deepened following the latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumers, which showed 5-year forward inflation expectations jumping to 4.1% — a 0.2-point increase from prior estimates and the highest reading since February 1993. As stocks fell in unison, a flight to safety ensued, sending gold up 1% to a record-breaking $3,090 per ounce. Treasury bonds also rallied, with yields declining across all maturities. 
Price action in commodities was mixed with oil down 1% and natural gas up 2.4%. Sentiment in crypto also took a sharp hit, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down by 4% to below $84,000, flipping to weekly losses.

President Trump Says Don't Think Americans Should Buy Cars Now To Avoid Tariffs

Shares of auto-related stocks are trading lower after President Trump said he will introduce new tariffs on auto and auto parts imports.

General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) shares are trading lower by 8.7% to $46.40 since Monday&#8217;s open and are lower by 1.00% Friday. The stock has been volatile in recent sessions after <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44522387/japanese-automakers-face-29-billion-tariff-hit-nissan-mazda-subaru-most-at-risk-says-analyst">analysts warned</a> that the newly imposed 25% tariff on imported vehicles and parts could significantly impact the company's costs and sales.
JPMorgan's Ryan Brinkman also slashed GM's price target by 17% to $53 from $64, citing increased earnings risk. Major indexes are also lower following a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44535109/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-in-february-casting-doubt-on-near-term-rate-cuts">greater-than-expected</a>&nbsp;rise in the PCE price index in February while personal spending missed estimates.
What To Know: Although GM assembles many of its vehicles in the U.S., it remains highly exposed to global supply chains. The company imports a substantial portion of its auto parts, meaning tariffs could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44522387/japanese-automakers-face-29-billion-tariff-hit-nissan-mazda-subaru-most-at-risk-says-analyst">raise production costs</a> by $3,000 to $8,000 per vehicle. 
Additionally, GM relies on foreign-built models such as the Buick Envision from China and various Cadillac models from Canada and Mexico, which could now face steep price hikes.
With its electric vehicle strategy dependent on sourcing batteries and key components from overseas, GM could see margin compression if it cannot pass higher costs onto consumers. 
Analysts warn that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44522387/japanese-automakers-face-29-billion-tariff-hit-nissan-mazda-subaru-most-at-risk-says-analyst">weakened demand</a> and potential retaliatory tariffs could further strain GM's profitability.

What's Going On With GM Shares?

Risk appetite is on track to end the week on a negative note. Investors continue to trim their equity exposure amid the threat of tariffs and a higher-than-expected increase in the Fed&#8217;s most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44535109/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-in-february-casting-doubt-on-near-term-rate-cuts">closely watched inflation metric.</a>
The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index remained at a 2.5% year-over-year pace in February. Yet, the more telling core PCE measure, which strips out food and energy and is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, rose from an upwardly revised 2.7% in January to 2.8%, outpacing expectations.
The uptick in core inflation dealt a blow to investor hopes for near-term interest rate cuts, reinforcing the view that the Fed is in no rush to ease policy amid persistent price pressures. 
Adding to the jitters, earlier this week, Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on all foreign auto imports stirred fears of retaliatory trade measures and higher consumer prices.
Investors are now bracing for a potential announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2, which could further escalate trade tensions and pressure profit margins across multiple sectors.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Slide, Safe Havens Shine</h3>
The S&amp;P 500 index opened lower, with the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) down 0.5%. The Nasdaq 100 – as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – fell 0.8%. The Dow eased 0.3%. 
Within mega-cap stocks, Mondelez International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) was the strongest performer, up 1%, while Target Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) led among the laggards, down 2.5%. 
Gold prices, as mimicked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), jumped 0.7% to trade above $3,070 per ounce, setting a new record high. Investors turned to traditional safe havens in reaction to the inflation surprise and rising geopolitical uncertainty.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) tumbled 2.2%, flipping to weekly losses. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Investor Sentiment The Most Bearish Since October 2022</h3>

&#8220;The bull-bear spread of the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) sentiment survey has fallen to the lowest level since October of 2022 as those considering themselves bearish far outnumber those that are expecting gains in the equity market over the next six months,&#8221; said Equity Clock in its latest a monthly outlook. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Tensions Rattle Automakers</h3>
Trump's proposed 25% auto tariff sent shockwaves across the U.S. auto industry this week, with legacy carmakers bearing the brunt. 
Shares of General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) plunged about 6% and 4%, respectively, in Thursday's session. 
They were down 0.8% and 1% during early trading Friday, respectively.
In stark contrast, U.S.-based EV manufacturers—building all their vehicles domestically—emerge as winners. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>), and Lucid Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) are all on track to notch their best weekly performance of 2025, as investors bet on their potential insulation from import tariffs.
