A Look Into The Campbell's Inc's Price Over Earnings

Government health agencies are pushing forward an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/hhs-fda-phase-out-petroleum-based-synthetic-dyes-nations-food-supply" rel="noreferrer noopener">overhaul of food additive rules</a> to remove petroleum-based artificial dyes from products sold in the U.S.
The effort, revealed on Wednesday, falls under health secretary&nbsp;Robert F. Kennedy Jr's larger "Make America Healthy Again" plan, which seeks to boost national health by tightening dietary guidelines.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services introduced a roadmap outlining the shift toward plant-based food colorings across the industry.

"For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent," said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
"These poisonous compounds offer no nutritional benefit and pose real, measurable dangers to our children's health and development. That era is coming to an end.
As part of the plan, approvals for two synthetic dyes, Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, will be rescinded in the coming months.
Regulators are coordinating with manufacturers to eliminate six commonly used food colorings: FD&amp;C Red No. 40, FD&amp;C Yellow Nos. 5 and 6, FD&amp;C Green No. 3, and FD&amp;C Blue Nos. 1 and 2 by the end of next year.
The FDA also encouraged companies to retire FD&amp;C Red No. 3 ahead of the current 2027-2028 target. To support a seamless shift, the agency intends to authorize four new naturally derived color additives in the near future.
It is also speeding up the evaluation process for substitutes such as butterfly pea flower extract, Galdieria blue, gardenia blue, and calcium phosphate. In addition, updated regulatory guidelines are being developed to assist manufacturers in meeting the new requirements.
In collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the FDA will undertake a broad research effort to assess how food dyes influence children's development and well-being.

Wall Street gained ground by midday trading on Tuesday, as investor concerns over the economic impact of trade tensions continued to ease following recent signs that the Trump administration was taking <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44812727/bessent-says-tariffs-on-china-are-far-from-a-joke-dismisses-treasury-dumping-fears">a more conciliatory approach.</a>
All major indexes were in positive territory, with tech stocks leading the way thanks to strong performances by Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), both rising about 6%.
The streaming giant climbed following a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/media/netflix-aims-to-join-the-1-trillion-club-fdacb250">Wall Street Journal report</a> that it plans to double revenue by 2030, citing sources. Netflix is set to release its first-quarter earnings on Thursday after market close.
The S&amp;P 500 has now recovered nearly 80% of the losses suffered after Trump's tariff announcement on April 2.
Among sectors, financials led the gains, climbing 1.3%, supported by strong earnings reports from Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>), which surged 4.3% and 3.8%, respectively.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) rebounded 0.5%, aiming to end a five-day losing streak, while Treasury yields declined further, easing fears of a potential sell-off of U.S. assets by foreign investors. Yields on the 10-year Treasury fell five basis points to 4.33%, following an 11-basis-point drop on Monday.
In commodities, gold edged up 0.4% to $3,223 per ounce, while oil prices slipped 0.8% to $61 per barrel. Natural gas dropped 1.6% to $3.25 per million British thermal units, approaching its lowest level since mid-December 2024.
Crypto markets remained relatively quiet, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rising 0.5% to $85,000.

Shares of consumer staple companies are trading higher following President Trump's decision to implement a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China.

BofA Securities analysts Bryan D. Spillane, Lisa K. Lewandowski and Peter T. Galbo have put forward on Tuesday their research findings on consumer staple companies in the face of a potential recession.
The analysts said consumer staples have historically outperformed the S&amp;P 500 in most recent recessions, suggesting a defensive edge.
However, the analysts warned that current conditions, such as lingering high prices and weak volume growth, may limit their resilience in a future downturn.

Still, their limited exposure to new tariffs could make the sector more appealing than others, potentially helping sustain valuation multiples.
During recessions, the Consumer Staples sector stock prices are primarily influenced by earnings per share (EPS) rather than sales growth.
Analysis shows that forward EPS estimates account for over 90% of stock price movement across key subsectors like Beverages, Household &amp; Personal Care (HPC), Packaged Food, and Tobacco, with the correlation being the tightest Beverages and HPC.
The analysts noted that this highlights the critical importance of earnings strength when evaluating stock performance in uncertain economic conditions.
A review of six past recessions reveals that certain Consumer Staples stocks consistently outperformed the S&amp;P 500.
Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CL#NYSE">CL</a>), General Mills Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GIS#NYSE">GIS</a>), McCormick &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MKC#NYSE">MKC</a>), PepsiCo Inc. Top-performing Consumer Staples stocks in a potential downturn will likely share three traits: profit flexibility to offset revenue pressure and rising costs, strong U.S. manufacturing presence to limit tariff-related inflation, and solid balance sheets capable of sustaining share buybacks to boost earnings per share.
Analysts see McCormick, Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>) and Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PM#NYSE">PM</a>) as well-defended, with Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) has raised concerns over the impact of newly enacted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44269301/trumps-25-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect-eu-retaliates-us-steel-nucor-century-aluminum-and-other-domestic-stocks-cheer">steel and aluminum tariffs</a>.
What Happened: The CMI warns that tariffs will have an inflationary influence on the domestic can industry. 
The Trump administration argues that these measures would protect domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign metals. But manufacturers say they will raise costs and harm competitiveness.
"While we support President Donald Trump's efforts to address unfair trade practices, tariffs on steel and aluminum will increase prices for canned foods and beverages," CMI's president Robet Budway <a href="https://www.cancentral.com/can-manufacturers-respond-to-trump-232-tariffs-steel-aluminum/">said</a> in a statement.
Per the Aluminum Association, Canada provides nearly two-thirds of the <a href="https://www.aluminum.org/news/us-aluminum-industry-responds-232-implementation-calls-certainty-tariff-landscape">domestically used aluminum</a>, while Mexico is the third-largest supplier. The new tariffs apply to all non-USMCA-compliant imports. Even compliant goods from Canada and Mexico will be subject to tariffs starting April 2. Additionally, China faces separate 20% tariffs on its aluminum exports to the U.S.
The U.S. can-making industry produces around 135 million cans annually, employing over 28,000 workers across 33 states. Nine domestic mill production lines have closed since the original 2018 tariffs on tin mill steel. That leaves only three operational facilities. CMI warns that domestic production cannot meet the demand, forcing manufacturers to rely on imports.
Numerous large companies rely on aluminum cans for manufacturing, particularly in the beverage, food, and aerosol industries. They include Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>), Campbell Soup  (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), and Clorox (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>).

Why It Matters: The situation will likely get worse for manufacturers, according to Japanese bank Nomura. 
The firm published a special report evaluating the effects of these tariffs. The firm estimated that the effective tariff rate on total U.S. imports will rise from 2.4% in 2024 to 10.1% in 2025 due to the expanded scope of trade restrictions. 
Furthermore, it warned about the retaliatory measures from key trading partners, particularly the European Union, which are likely in the coming months.
Nomura anticipates that while the current tariffs are 25%, the cumulative tariff rate on targeted steel and aluminum products could climb as high as 35% once additional country-specific penalties are layered. This would further strain industries reliant on these materials, including can manufacturing.
To prevent this outcome, CMI has called for targeted tariff relief to ensure the competitiveness of U.S.-made canned goods.
"Aluminum and steel tariffs place price pressures on American-produced goods by artificially and dramatically increasing the cost of critical production materials, making U.S.-made food less competitive against foreign products. We are calling on President Trump to provide targeted tariff relief, ensuring steel and aluminum cans and the products packaged in those cans continue to be ‘Made in America.'"

Shares of Redfin Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDFN#NASDAQ">RDFN</a>) rose sharply during Monday's session after Rocket Companies announced it will acquire the company in an all-stock transaction valued at $12.50 per share.
Under the terms of the agreement, Redfin shareholders will receive 0.7926 shares of Rocket Class A common stock for each Redfin share—a 63% premium over Redfin&#8217;s 30-day volume-weighted average price. Rocket shareholders will own approximately 95% of the combined company upon completion, with Redfin shareholders holding the remaining 5%.
Redfin shares jumped 70% to $9.89 on Monday.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Modi reiterated the Sector Perform rating on Campbell&#8217;s Co (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NASDAQ">CPB</a>), lowering the price forecast to $44 from $51.
Yesterday, the company reported second-quarter sales growth of 9% to $2.685 billion, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44140506/campbells-stocks-fall-on-q2-sales-miss-and-gloomy-outlook" rel="noreferrer noopener">missing the analyst&nbsp;consensus estimate of $2.74 billion.</a>
For FY25, Campbell&nbsp;sees net sales growth of 6% to 8% (prior view: 9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%). Adjusted EBIT growth&nbsp;of 3% to 5% (previous view: 9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%).
Modi suggests that while Campbell&#8217;s challenging results and full-year guidance cut were anticipated, the company made a wise decision to address these issues upfront, allowing them to focus on performance improvements despite ongoing macro and consumer challenges.

The analyst states in response to F2Q results, estimates were adjusted for FY25 net sales growth to +6.7% (prior view: +9.2%), organic sales growth to -1.2% (prior view: +0.4%), EBIT growth to +9.2% (prior view: from +3.2%) and EPS to $2.99 (prior view: $3.17).
Per the analyst, lowering the full-year guidance was the right move, but due to the fluid environment, Modi remains cautious and slightly below the midpoint of the company&#8217;s top-line guidance, anticipating consumer sentiment could &#8220;soften&#8221; further.
