Barclays Maintains Overweight on Conagra Brands, Raises Price Target to $29

Shares of consumer packaged goods company Conagra Brands Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAG#NYSE">CAG</a>) traded lower in premarket on Thursday after the third-quarter FY25 earnings.
The company reported a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/n44624847/conagra-brands-reports-third-quarter-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">third-quarter sales decline of 6.3%</a> year-on-year to $2.84 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $2.903 billion.
Organic net sales decreased 5.2%, driven by a&nbsp;2.1% negative impact from&nbsp;price/mix and a&nbsp;3.1%&nbsp;decrease in volume.&nbsp;
Adjusted EPS of $0.51 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">missed the consensus</a> estimate of $0.53.
Gross profit declined 17.3% to&nbsp;$710 million and the gross margin contracted 331 basis points to 25%.

Selling, general, and administrative expense, which includes advertising and promotional expense, increased 14.5% to&nbsp;$444 million in the quarter.
The operating margin contracted 712 basis points to 8.4%.
The operating cash flow for nine months totaled $1.3 billion with a free cash flow of $1 billion. The company held $49.4 million in cash and equivalents as of February 23, 2025.
The company ended the quarter with net debt of&nbsp;$8.1 billion, representing a 5.9% reduction Y/Y.
&#8220;Our third quarter unfolded largely as expected since our update in February at CAGNY, with strong consumption trends and share performance reflecting the continued resilience of our brands,&#8221; said President and CEO Sean Connolly.
&#8220;While shipments lagged consumption largely due to the discrete supply constraints we announced in February, we are making solid progress in restoring inventory and improving customer service levels.&#8221;&nbsp;
Outlook Reaffirmed: Conagra sees FY25 organic net sales to decline 2%. The company expects adjusted EPS of approximately $2.35, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">matching the consensus estimate.</a>

Conagra Brands Reaffirms FY25 Organic Net Sales Decline of 2%; Adj EPS of $2.35 Vs. $2.35 Est.

Conagra Brands (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAG#NYSE">CAG</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $0.51 per share which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $0.53 by 3.77 percent. This is a 26.09 percent decrease over earnings of $0.69 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $2.84 billion which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $2.90 billion by 2.03 percent. This is a 6.33 percent decrease over sales of $3.03 billion the same period last year.

U.S. stock futures plummeted on Thursday after advancing on Wednesday. Futures of major benchmark indices were down over 2-3% in premarket trading.
Invoking a 1977 law, President Donald Trump declared a trade emergency Wednesday, arguing it was necessary to address the U.S.&#8217;s "large and persistent trade deficit." The White House <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44621408/market-access-has-a-price-trump-unveils-list-of-tariffs-countries-targeted">released a fact sheet</a> outlining the new reciprocal tariffs, which Trump justified with the principle, "Treat us like we treat you." 
While Canada and Mexico were notably excluded from the tariff program, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka face the steepest increases under the new system. Gold prices soared to a fresh record of $3,167.71 per ounce, and investors fled toward safe-haven assets.
The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.06% and the two-year bond was at 3.78%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool </a>shows markets pricing in a 76.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve maintaining current interest rates through its May meeting.

Consumer discretionary, industrials, and financials led a broad S&amp;P 500 rally Wednesday, pushing the Dow Jones over 200 points, despite President Trump&#8217;s later announcement of trade tariffs.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) surged 5%, even after reporting weak delivery numbers. Contrary to the market&#8217;s upward trend, consumer staples closed lower.
Positive economic data, showing stronger-than-expected job growth and rising manufacturing orders, contributed to the day&#8217;s gains, though Trump&#8217;s trade actions sparked fears of a potential economic downturn.

Insights From Analysts:
Senior economist Jeremy Siegel, in his weekly commentary, explained that the public is more willing to endure the near-term friction and economic headwinds from the cuts to inefficient government spending rather than "facing higher prices via tariffs, which bring near-term pain with very uncertain long-term benefit."
He said, "Dividend-paying value stocks look increasingly attractive, and I expect the market rotation from growth to dividend stocks to continue."
"Equity weakness has been widespread. The rotation out of growth continues, and the AI-led rally that defined the market over the last three years has decisively broken trend. Growth stocks have taken a larger hit than value stocks," he added.
Meanwhile, other analysts opined with their views on the tariffs. Wedbush&#8217;s Daniel Ives said, &#8220;We would characterize this slate of tariffs as ‘worse than the worst case scenario&#8217; the Street was fearing.&#8221;

We expect&nbsp;Bloom&#8217;s&nbsp;fuel cells to provide cleaner and reliable power at our&nbsp;Troy&nbsp;and&nbsp;Archbold&nbsp;facilities,&#8221; said&nbsp;Christine Daugherty, vice president of sustainability at Conagra Brands.
A major advantage of combination is the anticipated 19% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions at both locations. This initiative supports Conagra's long-term sustainability objectives for 2030.
Unlike traditional methods, Bloom's system eliminates pollutants like nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter.
Complementing this clean energy initiative, Conagra has established a $9 million Sustainability Capital Allowance program.
The fund is dedicated to advancing sustainability across the company's supply chain by investing in energy-efficient technologies, modernizing operations, and reducing the environmental footprint of its production facilities.
Price Action: CAG shares traded higher by 0.22% at $26.73 in premarket at last check Tuesday.
