The immediate impact was a surge in lithium prices, as lithium carbonate futures on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange jumped 5.5%, reaching 76,700 yuan per ton ($10,700), though still down 27% year-to-date.
The unexpected sentiment shift triggered a supply short squeeze as short-sellers scrambled to cover their positions. Australian lithium producer Pilbara Minerals (OTCPK: PILBF), owner of the world's largest independent hard-rock lithium operation, surged 16% while U.S.-based Albemarle (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALB#NYSE">ALB</a>) jumped over 13.5% while remaining down 39% year-to-date.

"We see near-term sentiment uplift to lithium prices, helped too by the traditional September-October peak season. These should accelerate the lithium destocking process as well," noted Citi's analyst Jack Shang<a target="_blank" href="https://www.afr.com/markets/commodities/lithium-stocks-roar-back-as-short-sellers-scramble-on-mine-closure-20240911-p5k9rs" rel="noreferrer noopener"> per</a> AFR.
Tribeca's portfolio manager, Ben Cleary, shared his opinion about the nature of this rally.
"The rally we're seeing today is almost 100 percent short covering. Supply coming out of the market is exactly what the lithium market needs, so there is plenty of room for this rebound to run given how hard the stocks have been hit."
Meanwhile, CLSA's James McIntosh took a more cautious stance.
"Although we are not optimistic about a rebound in lithium prices over the next year, we might be able to believe that there won't be a significant further decline in lithium prices. We have entered the bottom range," he said, pricing the market's floor at 70,000 yuan ($9,800).
UBS projects lithium prices to increase between 11% and 23% for the remainder of the year. However, CATL might resume production if prices stabilize around $10,968 per ton, putting a ceiling on further gains.
Lithium prices have tumbled nearly 90% since its peak in 2022, owing mainly to an oversupply and a slowdown in electric vehicle adoption. As lower prices cut off supply, the market hopes for temporary relief and stabilization.

Wall Street witnessed a broad sell-off on Wednesday, except for the tech sector, as investor optimism over disinflation progress cooled following a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/09/40812986/inflation-slows-to-2-5-in-august-lowest-rate-since-february-2021-core-index-remai">mixed August inflation report.</a>
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.5% year-over-year, slightly below the 2.6% estimate and down from July&#8217;s 2.9%, marking the slowest pace of inflation since February 2021. The bulk of this decline came from energy-related categories.
However, core inflation — excluding the more volatile components like food and energy — rose 0.3% month-over-month, surpassing expectations of 0.2%. The annual core CPI remained at 3.2%, reflecting persistent inflation in service-related sectors.
A key driver of inflation continues to be shelter costs, which rose 0.5% from the previous month—the sharpest increase since January — and account for nearly a third of the total CPI.
The report dashed hopes for a Federal Reserve rate cut in the upcoming meeting. Market expectations for a 50-basis-point cut plummeted to just 13%, down from 34% the day before, as per CME FedWatch. 
The inflation data gave the U.S. dollar a lift and nudged Treasury yields higher across the board. Sectors most sensitive to interest rates, such as real estate, materials and financials, led the sell-off.
In contrast, tech stocks defied the broader market slump, driven by strong gains in the semiconductor space. 
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) surged 4.5%, buoyed by the market's reaction to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/09/40817347/donald-trump-lost-debate-to-kamala-harris-will-lose-ground-in-the-polls-polymarket-traders">latest U.S. presidential debate</a> between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. 
The two candidates engaged in a back-and-forth about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/09/40731719/goldman-sachs-kamala-harris-victory-bodes-well-for-us-economy-trump-tariffs-will-drive-up-inflat">tariffs on goods</a>, which would impact inflation and the chipmaking industry.
Solar stocks also rallied, with the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) jumping over 4%, as the prospect of a Harris administration increased <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40817317/solar-shares-climb-as-harris-gains-momentum-post-debate-against-trump-7-top-gainers-in-clean-ene">optimism for renewable energy policies.</a> First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>) was the top performer within the industry, jumping over 12%. 
Elsewhere, gold remained flat, while oil prices rebounded over 2% after Tuesday&#8217;s sell-off. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) dropped more than 2%.

U.S. stocks were lower, with the Dow Jones index falling over 1% on Wednesday.
Shares of Petco Health and Wellness Company, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WOOF#NASDAQ">WOOF</a>) rose sharply during Wednesday's session following quarterly results.
Petco reported quarterly losses of nine cents per share, which missed the analyst consensus estimate of losses of two cents per share. Quarterly sales of $1.52 billion met the analyst consensus estimate and represented a 1.99% increase over the same period last year.
Petco Health and Wellness shares surged 8.4% to $3.3299 on Wednesday.

<li>Array Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARRY#NASDAQ">ARRY</a>) gained 7.8% to $6.14.</li>
<li>Dave &amp; Buster&#8217;s Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLAY#NASDAQ">PLAY</a>) rose 7.5% to $32.09 after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter EPS results.</li>
<li>Verona Pharma plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VRNA#NASDAQ">VRNA</a>) gained 6.6% to $29.86. HC Wainwright &amp; Co. analyst Raghuram Selvaraju reiterated Verona Pharma with a Buy and maintained a $36 price target.</li>
<li>First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>) gained 6.2% to $221.14.</li>
<li>AppLovin Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APP#NASDAQ">APP</a>) gained 6.2% to $91.53. B of A Securities analyst Omar Dessouky maintained AppLovin with a Buy and raised the price target from $100 to $120.</li>
