Despite a powerful 22% surge in the S&amp;P 500 since the April lows—driven by easing U.S.-China trade tensions and a 90-day pause on new tariffs—only half of the index&#8217;s stocks have managed to rise above their 200-day moving average, indicating a market rally <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers">that remains potentially incomplete.</a>



This technical indicator, often used to gauge long-term trends and market breadth, currently shows that just 49.9% of S&amp;P 500 components are in what traders would consider a bullish trend. 



That figure remains below both the five- and 10-year averages of 60%, suggesting a wide swath of the market has yet to participate in the rebound.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Breadth Gauge Shows Room To Run</h3>



Over the past four years, the percentage of stocks above their 200-day moving average has moved within a wide 10% to 92% range. The extreme lows—seen in June and September 2022 at just 10%—came during periods of heightened recession fears and monetary tightening. 



The recent cycle bottom occurred just last month, when the figure dipped to 15% following April's sharp, tariff-driven selloff.



The highest reading in the last four years came in May 2021, at 92%, during a time of peak post-pandemic optimism. More recently, a high of 82% was recorded in September 2024, following the start of Federal Reserve policy easing.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Analysts Say About The Tariff Pause and Market Reaction</h3>



Analysts say that the 90-day tariff truce announced in April and this week&#8217;s truce between the U.S. and China helped revive risk appetite, but they remain cautious about its long-term effects.



In a note on Wednesday, Peter Oppenheimer, strategist at Goldman Sachs, said the outcome was "much better than we had expected," noting that the tariff levies of 30 percentage points by the U.S. and +5 points by China were significantly lower than prior worst-case estimates.



Oppenheimer also highlighted that the new U.S.-UK trade agreement contributes to a more constructive global growth outlook and has mitigated fears of long-term economic damage from the April drawdown.



He added that the market has begun to price out recession risks. 



"Certainly, recent news has been supportive for risk in three respects: it has shown the U.S. Administration to be pragmatic and keen to de-escalate&#8230; it suggests a lower likely outcome for the average effective tariff rate&#8230; and it has led to a number of growth upgrades," he said.



Rick Gardner, chief investment officer at RGA Investments, said markets are already "pricing in an environment where the U.S. and China are able to trade with each other," even if some economic weakness persists.



"Even if we see a continued economic slowdown, the stock market may have already priced that in during the April selloff," Gardner said.

More than 20 S&amp;P 500 stocks are still trading over 20% below their 200-day moving averages, highlighting substantial technical room for recovery among the index's biggest underperformers during the tariff-relief rally.

Shares of Palantir Technologies Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) are trending higher Wednesday. The stock has been in a strong uptrend since it reversed after heading lower despite a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45383727/palantir-stock-hits-new-all-time-high-on-strong-earnings-macro-tailwinds">good earnings report</a>.



We have made it our Stock of the Day. It appears to be breaking out, and this is typically a bullish dynamic which would suggest further moves upwards.



The price action in Palantir after it released its earnings was confusing to many traders and investors. The numbers were ahead of estimates but the stock sold off. It was a classic case of ‘buy the rumor, sell the news.&#8217;

Wall Street widely anticipated a strong earnings report. Traders expected the report to be a catalyst for higher prices.



Because of this, they took positions and bought shares before the earnings were released. So, when the news hit the tape, the market had run out of buyers.

And if no one is left to buy, the price can only move lower.



Now the stock appears to have broken resistance. This can be a bullish dynamic.



Resistance is a price level or zone where there is a large amount of sell interest or shares for sale.



If a stock is moving higher, there are more shares to be bought than there are to be sold. People who wish to buy are forced to outbid each other to draw sellers into the market. This could force the shares into an uptrend.



When stocks reach resistance, rallies end or pause.



Sometimes stock sell off of resistance. This happened to Palantir when it reached $124.00 early this month.



But sometimes when a stock reaches resistance, the buyers eventually overpower the sellers and the resistance ‘breaks.' This is bullish because if the shares are trading at a higher level than the resistance, it shows that the investors and traders who created the resistance have left the market.



They have finished or canceled their orders.



With this large amount of support taken off of the market, buyers will need to be aggressive and outbid each other again if they wish to acquire shares. This could set the stage for a continued move higher in Palantir.

Stock Of The Day: Palantir Breaks Out As Classic 'Sell the News' Sets Up Rally

Markets rallied hard on Monday as the US/China trade war was put on a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45368500/nasdaq-jumps-over-4-following-us-china-tariff-truce-investor-sentiment-improves-as-fear-index-remains-in-greed-zone">90-day timeout</a>. While tariffs of up to 30% remain in place on a large percentage of Chinese imports, the most crippling ones were removed, and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45367206/sp-500-rallies-over-3-on-us-china-90-day-tariff-truce-but-experts-warn-it-doesnt-guarantee-a-complete-resolution-of-the-trade-war">S&amp;P 500 jumped</a> more than 3%.



But the tariff reset is not the only thing boosting markets lately. The tech sector has been quietly rallying as strong earnings have helped large-cap firms outperform the rest of the market. Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) reported strong Q1 earnings, including an impressive EPS number from META that came in 20% higher than expectations. Both stocks jumped following their reports, with MSFT leaping 10% and closing above $435 for the first time since January.



Large-cap tech has allowed the NASDAQ to comfortably outperform the S&amp;P 500 over the last couple of weeks. And if recent earnings and capex spending plans are any indication, the sector will continue to fuel the next leg of any potential market rally.



Here are four large tech stocks with momentum after earnings, pushing the stocks higher and higher.



Each stock has a highly anticipated conference call and a Benzinga Edge Momentum Score of at least 80.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Meta Platforms Inc.&nbsp;</h2>

Meta Platforms shares soared in February, riding a DiMaggio-esque streak of 20 consecutive up days to a new all-time high above $740 per share. However, a steep correction followed the impressive winning streak, and shares were back under $500 by the third week of April. But now, with tariff turbulence (maybe) in the rearview, earnings could become the focus, and META's quarter surpassed all expectations.

On April 30, META reported Q1 EPS of $6.43 and revenue of $42.31B, handily surpassing analyst estimates, including a nearly 22% upside EPS beat. The company earned $16.64B in net income, a year-over-year increase of almost 35%. Profit margins also came in 15% higher than the previous year. META earns a spot on our list over MSFT because we believe there's more short-term upside in META shares, especially if the 50-day SMA and 200-day SMA continue converging. Based on 43 analyst reports, META shares are a consensus Buy with an average price target of $704, indicating 10% more potential upside from current levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Netflix Inc.&nbsp;</h2>



Benzinga Edge Momentum Score: 96.14



Netflix (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) is the biggest winner in the streaming wars, with a dominant market share amongst TV viewers and new forays into live sports and entertainment. The stock dipped under $200 per share in June 2022 at the peak of the bear market but now sits above $1100, a remarkable advance of more than 500% in less than three years. The company reported solid earnings on April 17, posting a modest revenue beat but an EPS figure 15% higher than analyst expectations.

The $10.54 billion in revenue is still the most Netflix has ever done in a quarter, and the report was the fifth straight top and bottom line beat for the streaming giant. The stock also has strong technical signals, trading firmly above the 50-day and 200-day SMAs after bouncing off the 200-day SMA in early April. The company projects EPS of $7.04 and revenue of $11.04 billion in Q2 2025, and it received 11 price target boosts from analysts following the Q1 report. A recent oversold reading on the RSI triggered a short selloff, which could represent a good entry point for new investors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Uber Technologies Inc.&nbsp;</h2>



Benzinga Edge Momentum Score: 85.44



Uber (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NASDAQ">UBER</a>) has been on a long path to profitability. Still, the company reported positive income in Q2 2023 and has made money in seven of the eight quarterly reports since then. Its Q1 2025 report was a serious improvement over Q4 2024, with EPS beating analyst expectations by more than 65% (negating a slight miss on revenue). One big positive has been the Uber One subscription service, which experienced 60% year-over-year growth and provides the company with a new model for customer retention. The stock is now up more than 44% year-to-date, including a 20% ascent in the last month.

UBER shares saw a Golden Cross form in March as the 50-day SMA crossed over the 200-day SMA, but the bullish momentum didn't kick in until the initial tariff pause on April 9. The momentum continued following the May 7 earnings report. Today, the stock trades comfortably above its 50- and 200-day SMAs. One possible trap to watch is on the RSI, where the reading approaches the overbought threshold of 70. However, Uber appears now to have fundamental and technical tailwinds at its back, and analysts remain bullish with a consensus Buy rating based on 34 research reports.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Palo Alto Networks&nbsp;</h2>



Benzinga Edge Momentum Score: 98.30



One of the highest momentum scores belongs to Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PANW#NASDAQ">PANW</a>), a favorite during the post-COVID bull market. The stock also didn't suffer as hard as the rest of the tech sector during the 2022 bear market and has posted an overall gain of more than 400% in the last five years. While its earnings for Q1 haven't been released yet, the stock is showing signs of more upside ahead.

Palo Alto Networks doesn't report earnings until May 20, but investors appear to be positioning themselves for positive numbers. The 10-day exponential MA recently crossed the 20-day exponential MA, indicating short-term momentum brewing (EMAs give more weight to recent prices than SMAs). According to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/05/45357613/china-tariff-de-escalation-biggest-winners-include-tesla-apple-new-tech-highs-back-on-the-table-now-for-2025">Wedbush</a>, cybersecurity stocks could be a group that sees outsized gains after the reduction of the China tariffs. Palo Alto Networks reported a top and bottom line beat for its Q4 2024 report; analysts expect an EPS of 0.77 and revenue of $2.28B for Q1 2025. The stock is rated a consensus Buy based on 43 analyst reports, with an average price target of $311, which indicates an upside potential of more than 35%.

4 Tech Stocks With Huge Earnings Momentum

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/playstation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PlayStation parent</a>&nbsp;Sony Group Corp.&nbsp;(NYSE:&nbsp;SONY) reported its fiscal fourth-quarter 2024 results on Wednesday.



The company reported a quarterly consolidated sales&nbsp;decline of 24% year-on-year to $17.24 billion (2.63 trillion Japanese yen), missing the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/archive.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate</a> of&nbsp;$20.40 billion.&nbsp;



EPS of 21 cents (32.63 yen) beat the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate</a> of 12 cents.

Segments &amp; Profits:&nbsp;Game &amp; Network Services (G&amp;NS) revenue decreased 4.2%&nbsp;to 1.05 trillion yen, and operating income declined 12.5%&nbsp;to&nbsp;92.7 billion yen.



Music revenue rose 9.5%&nbsp;to 470.7 billion yen, and operating income increased by 17.4%&nbsp;to 83.6 billion yen.



Pictures revenue increased by 1.9%&nbsp;to 414.6 billion yen. Operating income improved by 74.3% to 53.5 billion yen.



Entertainment, Technology &amp; Services (ET&amp;S) revenue declined by 9.1% to 484.1 billion yen, and operating income loss rose to 20.4 billion yen from a loss of 6.4 billion yen a year ago.



Imaging &amp; Sensing Solutions revenue (I&amp;SS)&nbsp;rose 2.6% to 409 billion yen, and operating income remained flat at 34.5 billion yen.



Financial Services revenue loss stood at 172.4 billion yen. Operating income loss was 11.6 billion yen.



Consolidated operating income declined by 11.2% to 203.6 billion yen.&nbsp;The net income grew 8.7% to 197.7 billion yen.



Sony sold 2.8 million PS5 units in the quarter, compared to&nbsp;4.5 million a year ago and 9.5 million in the preceding quarter.



It held 2.98 trillion yen in cash and equivalents as of March end. The company&#8217;s board of directors has authorized a new stock buyback program of up to 100 million shares worth a maximum of 250 billion yen. The period of repurchase is May 15, 2025 to May 14, 2026.



Sony plans to execute a partial spin-off of Sony Financial Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary that operates the Financial Services business, in October 2025. Sony plans to classify the Financial Services business as a discontinued operation from the first quarter of 2025.



In April, Sony announced that it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44787792/sony-raises-ps5-prices-in-some-countries-by-up-to-25-in-anticipation-of-tariffs" rel="noreferrer noopener">had raised the</a> price of its PlayStation 5 console by close to 25% in select markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia, and New Zealand, citing high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.



Outlook:&nbsp;Sony expects fiscal 2025 sales of $81.82 billion or 11.7 trillion yen versus&nbsp;the&nbsp;13.34 trillion yen <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate</a>.&nbsp;It expects operating income of 1.38 trillion yen (before tariff impact) and 1.28 trillion yen (after tariff impact).



Despite a strong performance in the last fiscal year and the announcement of a share buyback and the financial unit spin-off, the looming tariff burden has led to a more cautious outlook from the company.

Wharton Professor of Finance and WisdomTree Senior Economist Jeremy Siegel <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45389778/jeremy-siegel-calls-us-china-deal-amazing-expects-long-term-stability">expressed significant optimism</a> regarding the recently announced U.S.-China trade deal, stating it was &#8220;a lot better than anyone was anticipating,&#8221; and predicting it will &#8220;stay that way.&#8221; 



Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk On The Street" on Tuesday, Siegel described it as an "amazing" deal benefiting all, including market participants.



He noted, "There was no analyst out there that predicted that we'd come to an agreement — at least a tentative agreement — so quickly, and actually specify tariff levels as low as they came in. It was like, wow, this is great news."



Siegel pointed out that with previous forecasts from Trump suggesting tariff reductions to the 50% to 80% range, the 30% announcement surprised markets and triggered a substantial rally. He further told CNBC that he expects the agreement to endure, stating he doesn't believe the two major economies will reimpose higher tariffs as trade tensions have "settled down."



While acknowledging potential "small adjustments" and that tariffs won't have "zero effect" given the current 17% average tariff for U.S. consumers (the highest in 85 years), Siegel said, "But it's certainly going to have a lot less effect than what it seemed like just a week ago."



The economist anticipates a likely increase in inflation in June or July due to tariff impacts on earnings and growth, but doesn&#8217;t foresee this lasting long-term.



He suggested that the Fed should cut rates if conditions worsen and then raise them if they improve, contrasting this with the common expectation of a rate-cutting cycle and the Fed&#8217;s emphasis on data dependence.



Siegel believes this approach is flawed, noting that while near-term inflation could rise due to supply shocks, long-term indicators appear stable. Trump Unveils 'Historic And Transformative' $600 Billion Saudi Deal, Predicts Markets Will 'Go A Lot Higher'

Goldman Sachs raised targets for the S&amp;P 500 Index while trimming recession odds and delaying Federal <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">Reserve rate cut forecasts.</a>



What Happened: In a note shared Tuesday, equity strategist David J. Kostin said the investment bank now expects the S&amp;P 500 to climb to 6,500 over the next 12 months. That&#8217;s up from a prior projection of 6,200.



The three-month target has been raised from 5,700 to 5,900. The six-month view, aligning with year-end, moved to 6,100, up from the previous 5,900.



Kostin said the revisions reflect "lower tariff rates, better economic growth, and less recession risk than we previously expected."

The S&amp;P 500 — as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — rose 0.4% to 5,860 on Tuesday. It hit levels last seen in early March and extending its recovery to 21% since April's lows.



The rally&#8217;s key drivers include de-escalating trade tensions and a rebound in big tech earnings.



First-quarter results showed that S&amp;P 500 earnings per share came in above expectations. Goldman now sees 2025 EPS rising 7% to $262, up from its prior 3% forecast. The 2026 forecast is also raised to $280, reflecting another 7% growth.



Valuations remain elevated but manageable. The S&amp;P 500 currently trades at 21 times forward earnings, in the 90th percentile since 1990, but still below the recent peaks.



Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said the Trump administration's decision to pause retaliatory tariffs for 90 days was less aggressive than feared. 



Effective tariff rate increases for 2025 are now expected to reach 13 percentage points, compared to a prior assumption of 15 percentage points.



"This is below the 54pp tariff hike we had penciled into our baseline," Hatzius said, referring to the originally expected increase. 



He added that if the Trump administration engages in other preliminary trade agreements, that might further lower the U.S. effective tariff rate.



Amid these positive trade developments, Goldman raised its U.S. GDP growth forecast for 2025 by 0.5 percentage points to 1% and cut 12-month recession odds to 35%, down from 45%.



The outlook shift also changes the expected path for interest rates. Instead of cutting in July, Goldman now expects the Federal Reserve to begin easing in December. Expect three rate cuts spaced every other meeting in 2026, rather than back-to-back, the bank noted.



Technology Stocks: Big tech underperformed during the April downturn. Still, earnings in the first quarter showed strength, especially in artificial intelligence-exposed companies.



Goldman says AI-heavy stocks posted 30% earnings growth compared to 9% for the rest of the S&amp;P 500.



"The median stock in our AI baskets has returned -1% year to date despite a 4% increase in consensus forward two-year earnings," the note says, suggesting room for outperformance as valuations remain relatively undemanding.



Stocks with high pricing power are also favored, particularly in sectors like software, semiconductors and health care, where companies are better positioned to protect margins amid elevated input costs and persistent tariff uncertainty.

The Consumer Price Index showed signs of cooling in April, as both headline and core readings eased or met expectations, easing concerns that Trump's proposed trade tariffs would trigger a surge in inflation.



The S&amp;P 500 advanced 0.7%, adding to Monday's 3.3% surge, and reached its highest level since March 3.



Technology stocks outperformed again, with the Nasdaq 100 jumping 1.8%, driven by a standout 5.3% rally in NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>).

Trump Wants To Kickstart Nuclear Development: These 5 Stocks Could Boom

Wall Street opened Tuesday with cautious gains after inflation data for April came in cooler than expected, calming investor concerns over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45374267/inflation-eases-in-april-as-trumps-tariffs-dont-push-prices-higher">tariff-driven price spikes. </a>



April's inflation report showed consumer prices rising 2.3% year over year, slightly below the 2.4% forecast and down from the previous month's reading of 2.4%. On a monthly basis, prices increased 0.2%, rebounding from March's 0.1% decline but missing expectations of a 0.3% gain.



Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, held steady at 2.8% annually—matching both March&#8217;s figure and economists' forecasts. Month over month, core prices rose 0.2%, a modest acceleration from March's 0.1% increase but still softer than the expected 0.3%.



Shelter remained a major contributor to inflation, rising 0.3% in April and accounting for over half of the monthly increase in the overall Consumer Price Index. Meanwhile, several categories posted price declines, including airline fares, used cars and trucks, communication services and apparel.



Despite inflation coming in below forecasts, expectations for interest rate cuts held steady. Traders still see just an 8% chance of a cut in June, rising to 38% for July. Markets continue to price in a total of 60 basis points in rate reductions by year-end, well below the almost 75 basis points priced a week ago.



The Nasdaq 100 led major benchmarks, rising 0.37% and on track to open at its highest level in 10 weeks.

Since its April low, the tech-heavy benchmark – as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – has rallied 27%, sharply rebounding from last month's bear market triggered by the implementation of Trump's new tariffs on April 2.



Semiconductors remained the strongest segment within tech. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) added another 0.7% in premarket after an explosive 7.2% surge Monday, buoyed by investor optimism following the U.S.-China trade truce.

Wall Street Climbs As Inflation Cools, Nasdaq 100 Hits 10-Week Highs

Consumer prices in the U.S. eased faster than expected in April, with fresh tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump appearing not to have a swift and tangible impact on the cost of living. 



The Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 2.3% higher compared to a year ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday, missing economists' expectations of 2.4% and the previous reading. 



The monthly gain was 0.2%, rebounding from a prior decline of 0.1%, yet falling short of a 0.3% forecasted.



The core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy categories, rose to 2.8% on an annual basis, unchanged from both the previous and expected 2.8%. Month over month, it increased 0.2%, inching higher from the 0.1% uptick in March but below expectations of 0.3%



Shelter costs rose 0.3% in April, contributing to over half of the total monthly increase in the overall consumer price index.



Airline fares, used vehicles, communication services and apparel were among the key categories that saw price declines in April.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Does This Mean For The Fed?</h3>



Before the release, interest rate futures reflected slim odds of policy easing. CME FedWatch data showed just an 8% chance of a rate cut in June, and 36% in July. 



Markets priced in only 60 basis points—0.6 percentage points—of total cuts by the end of 2025, well below earlier expectations for more aggressive easing.



Yet the modest progress is unlikely to sway the Federal Reserve toward near-term rate cuts, as markets remain cautious amid persistent inflation risks.



Inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target, and with shelter and services inflation proving sticky, policymakers may choose to keep borrowing costs elevated through the second half of the year.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions: Dollar And Yields Ease Slightly</h3>



The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) slightly eased 0.1%, down following Monday's sharp 1.3% rally. The 2-year Treasury yield edged down to 3.98%. 



U.S. stock futures, which had rallied on Monday after news of a U.S.-China tariff truce, were mixed in premarket trading as traders recalibrated inflation and interest rate expectations.



Futures on the S&amp;P 500 index were up 0.2%, while contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4%.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Dogecoin Wobble, But Traders See A 'Shopping' Opportunity

UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>) announced Tuesday morning that its CEO, Andrew Witty, will resign for personal reasons. The change is effective immediately.



Stephen Hemsley, who previously held the CEO title from 2006 to 2017, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/b45370370/unitedhealth-group-announces-leadership-transition" rel="noreferrer noopener">will succeed him</a>.



Hemsley will also remain chairman of UnitedHealth&#8217;s board of directors, and Witty will become senior adviser to the CEO.



Hemsley joined UnitedHealth Group in 1997 as chief operating officer and became president in 1999. He has been chair of the company&#8217;s board since leaving the CEO role in 2017.

The company also revealed that it would suspend its 2025 outlook, citing that care activity continued to accelerate.



UnitedHealth noted broadening to more types of benefit offerings than seen in the first quarter, and the medical costs of many Medicare Advantage beneficiaries new to UnitedHealthcare remained higher than expected.



It said it &#8220;expects to return to growth in 2026,&#8221; according to the announcement.



&#8220;UnitedHealth Group has tremendous opportunities to grow as we continue to help improve health care and to perform to our potential — and, in so doing, return to our long-term growth objective of 13 to 16 percent,&#8221; Hemsley continued.



The insurance giant reported adjusted EPS of $7.20 in April, up from $6.91 a year ago, missing the consensus of $7.29. Revenues increased 6.8% year over year to $109.6 billion, missing the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $111.60 billion</a>.



&#8220;UnitedHealth Group…did not perform up to our expectations, and we are aggressively addressing those challenges to position us well for the years ahead and return to our long-term earnings growth rate target of 13 to 16%,&#8221; <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/04/44860240/unitedhealth-slashes-2025-outlook-on-medicare-funding-reductions-stock-crashes" rel="noreferrer noopener">Witty said</a>.



Prior Guidance: UnitedHealth Group cuts its 2025 performance outlook. President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/05/45341590/trumps-drug-pricing-executive-order-could-rattle-pharma-stocksprice-cuts-up-to-80">signed an executive order</a> Monday, seeking to slash U.S. drug prices, fulfilling a social media pledge to achieve cuts of at least 59%. 



Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.45% and the two-year bond was at 3.98%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 91.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its June meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, were lower in premarket on Tuesday. Information technology, consumer discretionary, and communication services sectors saw the biggest gains on Monday. This, along with the Trump administration&#8217;s progress to further formal trade talks amid growing economic pressures, fueled the market optimism.



However, this positive Monday followed a down week for major U.S. indices, with the S&amp;P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow all closing lower on Friday.



In stock-specific news, NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) reported strong first-quarter results, while Kindly MD Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KDLY#NASDAQ">KDLY</a>) shares skyrocketed following a Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) treasury strategy merger.

Ryan Detrick from Carson Research highlighted in an X post that more than 55% of the S&amp;P 500 components made a new 20-day high on Monday.



According to the historical data presented by him, the S&amp;P 500 index ended 16.3% higher on average following days with such fresh 20-day highs. Out of the 30 times this has happened, the index has closed the year on a positive note 29 times.

The S&amp;P 500 index has a year-to-date performance low of 15.3%. Detrick highlighted that &#8220;Only three times in history has the S&amp;P 500 been down at least 15% YTD and moved back to positive by the end of the year.&#8221;



Despite having only three such instances historically, he added that 2025 could be the fourth such year.

Apple May 'Up Its Numbers' Amid China Tariff Truce: Trump Talks $500 Billion US Investment After Tim Cook Call

After Monday&#8217;s stock market rally, he also raised the S&amp;P 500 year-end target back up to 6,500 from 6,000.
