GXO Logistics Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GXO#NYSE">GXO</a>) announced Thursday that it has renewed and expanded its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45560985/gxo-extends-longstanding-partnership-with-biom-rieux" rel="noreferrer noopener">longstanding partnership</a> with bioMérieux, extending a key logistics agreement to support the French diagnostics firm's global supply chain.
The renewed deal builds on a 20-year collaboration and includes a modernization of two warehouses in France, covering 39,000 square meters. The upgraded facilities will support distribution to 160 countries and feature automation and advanced systems to handle highly regulated medical products.
"This next phase continues our shared commitment to innovation and efficiency," said Vincent Ricci, GXO's managing director in France. He noted the partnership began in 2004 and has evolved through continuous improvements to bioMérieux's supply chain.
bioMérieux, a leader in In Vitro Diagnostics, relies on tightly controlled logistics to handle temperature-sensitive products. The new setup includes six temperature zones and a unified warehouse management system. GXO will oversee inbound and outbound logistics, while bioMérieux manages direct fulfillment and fast-moving storage operations.
The enhanced logistics model is designed to improve order accuracy, increase visibility, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations. GXO's broader healthcare services also include emergency deliveries and inventory management across Europe and the U.S.
In France, GXO operates more than 65 logistics sites and employs nearly 10,000 people. It ranks as the country's second-largest logistics provider, serving clients in e-commerce, retail, consumer goods, and tech.
Recently, GXO Logistics was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45514088/toolstation-selects-gxo-as-its-logistics-partner-in-the-netherlands" rel="noreferrer noopener">selected</a> by Toolstation to manage its logistics operations in the Netherlands—marking the first time the fast-growing retailer has outsourced logistics in the country.

Another batch of earnings releases from large U.S. carriers—American Airlines (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>), Southwest Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>), and Alaska Air (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>)—has brought a somber message: the skies are cloudy for forward-looking guidance. As these airlines take back their 2025 outlooks in response to escalating macroeconomic uncertainty, investors holding <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">airline-themed ETFs</a> are replanning their altitude.

These are the three most susceptible ETFs most exposed to the turbulence shaking up the skies:
U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JETS#NYSE">JETS</a>)
This is the most widely held airline ETF among most investors, providing access to a portfolio of global airline shares, with a heavy U.S. bias. JETS has large stakes in Delta Air Lines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>), United Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NYSE">UAL</a>), American, and Southwest—all of which have watched their share prices spiral downward more than 20% on an average so far into 2025. Needless to say, JETS has declined sharply year to date, almost 23%, both as a result of weaker domestic demand and increasing economic headwinds.

iShares Transportation Average ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IYT#BATS">IYT</a>)
Although not airline-centric, IYT does have high exposure to airlines, along with freight and logistics stocks. The fund has been stressed by weakness within the passenger air travel component, as air travel demand between the U.S. and other countries especially Canada, has been affected due to tariffs and is susceptible to additional challenges if the slowdown permeates to cargo and global travel.
SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTN#NYSE">XTN</a>)
XTN provides equal-weighted exposure to the wider transportation space, including regional carriers. It&#8217;s more attuned to under-the-radar participants such as Alaska Air, which have fallen harder than their big-cap peers because they&#8217;ve been more dependent on domestic routes—now the weakest part of the market.
Guidance Cuts
Although first-quarter results were largely better than projected, the actual theater of action is in the empty forecast columns.
American Airlines topped revenue expectations and reported a smaller-than-expected Q1 loss, but <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44982328/american-airlines-flies-into-uncertainty-q1-revenue-miss-2025-outlook-pulled-but-debt-plan-on-track">withdrew its full-year forecast</a>, stating visibility is limited and clouds are dense.
Southwest seconded that view, regardless of record Q1 revenue, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel/25/04/44968055/southwest-airlines-tosses-out-profit-guidance-amid-macroeconomic-uncertainty-shares-slide-despite-better-than-expected-q1-results">withdrawing earnings guidance for 2025 and 2026</a> after experiencing demand weaken over the course of the quarter.
Alaska Air fell <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44976464/alaska-air-hit-by-demand-dip-in-q1-loss-skips-fy25-guidance-update-amid-uncertainty">short on revenue and sharply reduced Q2 expectations</a>, stating it is anticipating a 6 percentage point revenue hit from soft demand.
If investors were expecting clarity, they received fog instead.
Macro Headwinds And Tariff Crosswinds
Aside from consumer demand, geopolitics and trade tensions are also blowing fiercely. Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump have contributed to growing economic uncertainty, with spillovers affecting airline sentiment. 
Boeing, meanwhile, is seeking to reroute dozens of undeliverable planes originally destined for Chinese customers. &#8220;We have many customers who want near-term deliveries, so we plan to redirect the supply to the stable demand. And we are not going to continue to build aircraft (and ship it) to customers who will not take them,&#8221; Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg explained <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44970516/boeing-adjusts-strategy-amid-trump-tariff-fallout-ceo-kelly-ortberg-says-wont-build-aircraft-for-customers-who-will-not-take-them-as-china-halts-deliveries">in the earnings call.</a>
So far this year, American Airlines has fallen 43%, Southwest is down 22%, Delta and United have slid 30% and 28%, respectively.
The domestic demand drag is evident across the board. Airlines are hoping that international and premium segments, currently holding up, don't catch the same cold, as expressed by TD Cowen analyst Tom Fitzgerald, <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/american-southwest-airlines-earnings-stock-price-498f8b9c">cited </a>by Barron&#8217;s. But that's a risky bet in a macro environment where clarity is more elusive than a free in-flight upgrade.
What's Next For Airline ETFs?
Investors are struggling with mixed signals: strong near-term performance in certain segments vs. gigantic uncertainty to come. Fitzgerald warned that airline stocks are likely to remain range-bound until more definitive economic data are available, citing risks to second-half 2025 and 2026 earnings estimates.
While airline ETFs might still be a long-term bargain—currently, investors are in a holding pattern. Until economic skies brighten, it may be best to have that seatbelt tightly buckled.

Airline Stocks Hit Headwinds As Carriers Cut Guidance, ETFs Enter Turbulence

Ryder System Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/R#NYSE">R</a>) stock gained Wednesday after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/b44945090/ryder-reports-first-quarter-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">it&nbsp;reported&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;results</a>.
Revenue grew by&nbsp;1%&nbsp;year over year (Y/Y) to&nbsp;$3.13 billion, missing the consensus of $3.15 billion.
Operating revenue grew 2% Y/Y to $2.6 billion aided by prior year acquisition and contractual revenue growth in Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) and Fleet Management Solutions (FMS).
Revenue from FMS dipped 1% Y/Y to $1.45 billion&nbsp;due to decline in fuel costs passed through to customers.
SCS rose&nbsp;2% Y/Y to&nbsp;$1.33 billion&nbsp;as growth in operating revenue was led by new business and higher customer volumes.
Dedicated Transportation Solutions upped 7% Y/Y to&nbsp;$602 million, reflecting the prior year&#8217;s acquisition completed in February 2024.
Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$2.46 beat the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate of&nbsp;$2.41</a>.
Operating cash flow from continuing operations for the quarter was $651 million, with a free cash flow (non-GAAP)&nbsp;of&nbsp;$259&nbsp;million. Ryder System held&nbsp;$151 million in cash and equivalents as of March 31.
Ryder System CEO Robert Sanchez said, &#8220;We remain on track to achieve expected benefits in 2025 from strategic initiatives that are well underway. These benefits include our lease pricing initiative, savings from our multi-year maintenance initiative, realization of acquisition synergies, and optimization of our omnichannel retail network.&#8221;
Outlook: Ryder now expects 2025 operating revenue growth and total revenue growth guidance of ~1% each.
The company lowered the fiscal 2025 adjusted EPS outlook to $12.85-$13.60 from $13.00-$14.00 (versus the consensus of $13.17). It expects operating cash flow of $2.5 billion and free cash flow (non-GAAP) of positive $375 million &#8211; $475 million.
For&nbsp;the&nbsp;second quarter, Ryder expects adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$3.00-$3.25, compared to&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of&nbsp;$3.31</a>.
CFO Cristina Gallo-Aquino says Ryder&#8217;s revised 2025 forecast assumes &#8220;a more muted economic environment&#8221; that will impact demand for its rental business.
&#8220;We have also increased our free cash flow forecast to reflect lower capital spending,&#8221; Gallo-Aquino adds. We expect the execution of our initiatives and the strength of our contractual businesses to continue to drive earnings growth this year.&#8221;

Ryder System Mixed Signals: Q1 Revenue Soft, Profit Strong, Cuts FY25 Outlook

A better-than-expected U.S. jobs report for March brought renewed focus on some sector-specific <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">exchange-traded funds, or ETFs</a>. 
Healthcare, transportation, and food retail are specific examples of how the labor market&#8217;s resilience is presenting selective opportunity in the face of wider skepticism about inflation and trade tensions.
The American economy created 228,000 jobs in March, well exceeding Wall Street&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/04/jobs-report-march-2025-.html">forecast </a>of 140,000 and exceeding the 12-month average of 158,000, as reported in <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">data </a>issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hiring was strongest in healthcare, transportation and warehousing, and food and beverage stores—categories in which ETF exposure may be timely for investors.

Health care remained a bedrock of job growth, adding 54,000 jobs during March. This was consistent with the industry&#8217;s 12-month average. Employment additions were dispersed across ambulatory services (+20,000), hospitals (+17,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+17,000).
The Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) is one possible beneficiary of this trend. The fund is diversified with about 29.26% <a href="https://www.ssga.com/us/en/intermediary/etfs/the-health-care-select-sector-spdr-fund-xlv">exposure </a>to pharmaceuticals, 23.35% to healthcare providers and services, 22.39% to healthcare equipment and supplies, and some exposure to biotech (16.33%) and life sciences tools (8.7%).
Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 23,000 jobs, more than twice the 12-month average increase of 12,000. The majority of the gain was in couriers and messengers (+16,000) and truck transportation (+10,000), offset in part by a loss in warehousing and storage employment (-9,000).
The SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTN#NYSE">XTN</a>), which follows a broad group of U.S. transportation companies such as airlines, trucking, and logistics companies, may experience investor demand in light of better labor market trends within the sector. Fedex Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDX#NYSE">FDX</a>), Joby Aviation Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JOBY#NYSE">JOBY</a>), and JetBlue Airways Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBLU#NASDAQ">JBLU</a>) are among its top holdings.
Retail employment rose by 24,000 jobs in March, with food and beverage retailers adding 21,000 positions as workers returned from a strike. While retail hiring has remained largely flat over the past year, the March boost provides a short-term lift.
Invesco Food &amp; Beverage ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PBJ#NYSE">PBJ</a>) provides access to 30 companies that produce and distribute food and beverage items. PBJ has 62 basis points of fee expense and the prospect of offering a defensive sector bet under conditions of macro uncertainty.
Though the jobs report is a sign of strength, it has qualifications. Unemployment expanded to 4.2%, just above the forecast 4.1%, because the labor force participation rate increased. Also, the mean hourly earnings expanded 0.3% from last month, but the year-over-year wage growth slowed to 3.8%, the lowest since July of 2024.
The positive news comes amid increased economic anxiety, with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">recently introduced tariffs by the Trump administration</a> and retaliatory measures from China fueling worries over inflation and a slowdown.
Nevertheless, the resilience of the labor market in the core sectors provides a silver lining for shareholders. With specific exposure, ETFs such as XLV, XTN, and PBJ offer a method to ride sectoral momentum while weathering more general macroeconomic headwinds.

Oil prices have been gyrating lately, largely due to geopolitical and economic factors. 
U.S. airline stocks tumbled again on Tuesday, hitting their lowest levels since late last year following data indicating economic concerns. Airlines, particularly full-service carriers with extensive international networks, had been performing well due to strong demand and moderating domestic flight growth. The S&amp;P 500 Airlines Industry Index felt the impact of these price swings, dipping around 5% by midday on Friday, while the Nasdaq Global Smart Airlines Index dipped around 1.7%.

Recent <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/43420421/marco-rubios-panama-visit-will-trumps-aggressive-rhetoric-lead-to-war-or-diplomacy">statements</a> by President Donald Trump regarding potential changes in the status of the Panama Canal have raised concerns about possible impacts on various stocks and exchange-traded funds. After all, some 4% of global trade passes through the canal, with more than 70% of that traffic bound for or coming from the U.S., <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/americas/china-panama-canal-development-what-it-means-7c5dc870">according</a> to the Wall Street Journal.
What Happened: On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Panama&#8217;s President José Raúl Mulino that Washington will &#8220;take measures necessary&#8221; if Panama does not immediately take steps to put an end to what Trump&nbsp;considers China&#8217;s influence and control over the Panama Canal.
Following the talks with Rubio, who is on a tour of Central America, Mulino signaled he would review agreements involving China and Chinese businesses. Since Trump took office, he has reiterated his <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42639737/trumps-call-to-reclaim-panama-canal-sparks-backlash-every-square-meter-belongs-to-panama-says-president-mulino" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">threat to forcibly retake the Panama Canal</a>, which generates some $2.5 billion in annual revenue for Panama.
As a critical conduit for international maritime trade, any changes to its operations could naturally affect companies involved in shipping, logistics and transportation.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Which Companies Might Be Affected? Quite A Few</h1>

Trump's Takeover Of Panama Canal? Stocks To Watch As Diplomacy Affects President's Plan

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBHT#NASDAQ">JBHT</a>) shares dipped on Friday after Wells Fargo cut its price target on the stock <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/jbht/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">from $200 to $190</a>.
Yesterday, the company reported fourth-quarter EPS&nbsp;of $1.53, which missed the consensus of $1.63, while sales&nbsp;of $3.15 billion were in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b43040470/j-b-hunt-transport-services-inc-reports-u-s-gaap-revenues-net-earnings-and-earnings-per-share-for-" rel="noreferrer noopener"> line with the street view</a>.
Operating revenue fell 5% year over year to $3.15 billion due to a 3% and 2% decline in revenue per load excluding fuel surcharge revenue in Intermodal and Truckload segments, respectively, a 4% reduction in average trucks in Dedicated Contract Services and a 22% decrease in load volume in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">Integrated Capacity Solutions</a>.
Also, JP Morgan cut the price forecast to $200 from $205, while reiterating an Overweight rating.
Evercore ISI Group trimmed the price forecast to $202 from $207, reaffirming an Outperform rating.
Meanwhile, Stifel analyst J. Bruce Chan raised the price forecast to $174 from $161 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/jbht/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">while maintaining a Hold Rating</a>.
The analyst notes an unexpected $16 million intangible impairment charge, translating to about $0.10 per share.
Intermodal ended 2024 with record volumes, but residual contract pricing from earlier in the year weighed on revenue. The analyst adds that it is expected to remain a headwind until the third quarter of FY25, with only gradual improvement.
The analyst says the Dedicated segment continues to experience fleet contraction, likely persisting into the second quarter of FY25.
Chan writes that management guided first-quarter FY25 margins lower, citing a disconnect between optimistic Street estimates and expectations of inventory pull-forward, projecting a 20% &#8211; 25% sequential decline in operating income.
Overall, the analyst says this quarter had positives but raised concerns about near-term earnings and stock performance.
Chan lowered the first-quarter EPS estimates from $1.46 to $1.15, 2025 from $7.00 to $6.55, and set a 2026 EPS estimate of $8.10.
Benchmark analyst Christopher Kuhn writes that excluding an impairment charge in ICS from the BNSF acquisition, fourth-quarter EPS of $1.66 exceeded expectations owing to slightly better operating income than he expected. The analyst adds that first-quarter guidance is a disappointment.
The analyst says that he continues to consider JBHT&#8217;s diversified model and secular growth in Intermodal and Dedicated could support long-term EPS growth. However, patience may wane as estimates are revised down and mid-cycle earnings continue to get pushed out.&nbsp;&nbsp;

J.B. Hunt Q1 Guidance A Disappointment, Analyst Says

XPO, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPO#NYSE">XPO</a>) shares are trading higher after it&nbsp;reported&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/g41620296/xpo-reports-third-quarter-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">third-quarter results</a>.
Revenue growth of&nbsp;3.7% year-over-year to&nbsp;$2.05 billion,&nbsp;beating the consensus of&nbsp;$2.020 billion.
The revenue&nbsp;growth was aided&nbsp;by higher yield in the North American LTL segment and volume increase in the European Transportation segment.
Operating income was&nbsp;$176&nbsp;million, compared to&nbsp;$154&nbsp;million a year ago.
Adjusted EBITDA increased&nbsp;19.8% to&nbsp;$333&nbsp;million in the quarter, and the margin expanded to&nbsp;16.2% from&nbsp;14.0% last year in the same quarter.
North American Less-Than-Truckload revenue was&nbsp;$1.25 billion (+1.9% Y/Y). The adjusted operating ratio was&nbsp;84.2%, up 200&nbsp;bps year over year.&nbsp;
The segment saw a&nbsp;3.2%&nbsp;increase in shipments per day, a&nbsp;3.9%&nbsp; decline in daily tonnage, and a&nbsp;6.7%&nbsp;increase in yield, excluding fuel.
European Transportation generated revenue of&nbsp;$803&nbsp;million (+6.8% Y/Y), and the adjusted EBITDA margin was&nbsp;5.4%, down 40&nbsp;bps Y/Y, in the quarter.&nbsp;
Adjusted EPS was&nbsp;$1.02, up&nbsp;15.9% from the prior year,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the consensus of&nbsp;$0.91.</a>
The company generated&nbsp;$264&nbsp;million of cash flow from operating activities&nbsp;in the quarter&nbsp;and ended the quarter with&nbsp;$378&nbsp;million&nbsp;of cash and cash equivalents on hand.
Mario Harik, chief executive officer of XPO, said, &nbsp;&#8220;And we&#8217;re tracking three years ahead of plan with linehaul insourcing, which enhances our network efficiency and quality of service.&#8221;

XPO Q3 Hits The Mark: North American LTL Segment Fuels Growth, EBITDA Up 20%

Ryder System Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/R#NYSE">R</a>) shares are trading lower on Thursday after it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/b41512368/ryder-reports-third-quarter-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported third-quarter results</a>.
Sales grew&nbsp;8%&nbsp;year-on-year to&nbsp;$3.17 billion,&nbsp;missing the analyst consensus estimate of&nbsp;$3.29 billion.
Revenue from Fleet Management Solutions fell&nbsp;1%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$1.47 billion, Supply Chain Solutions climbed&nbsp;10%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$1.317 billion&nbsp;and Dedicated Transportation Solutions jumped&nbsp;41%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$633 million.
Earnings before tax declined to $188 million from $213 million a year ago quarter. Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$3.44 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the analyst consensus of&nbsp;$3.42.</a>
Operating cash flow for nine months totaled&nbsp;$1.7 billion, with a free cash flow of&nbsp;$218 million. Ryder System held&nbsp;$162 million&nbsp;in cash and equivalents as of September-end.
The company&#8217;s board recently authorized a new discretionary 2 million share repurchase program that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/41327050" rel="noreferrer noopener">replaces the recently completed program.</a>
Ryder Chairman &amp; CEO Robert Sanchez said, &#8220;We saw double-digit earnings growth in our contractual businesses. Higher ChoiceLease results from our pricing and maintenance initiatives benefited FMS. Stronger operating performance and cost-management actions benefited SCS. DTS delivered strong earnings growth, demonstrating the resiliency of our legacy business. Each of the segments also benefited from recent acquisitions.&#8221;
&#8220;The long-term secular growth trends remain intact for all of our contractual businesses, although we are experiencing near-term sales headwinds that reflect the extended freight downturn and overall economic uncertainty.&#8221;
Outlook: Ryder lowered its FY24 operating revenue growth to ~7%&nbsp;(vs. ~8% prior) and tightened the adjusted EPS forecast to $11.90&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;$12.10 (vs. consensus of $12.13) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/39966615" rel="noreferrer noopener">from&nbsp;$11.90&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;$12.40 earlier</a>.
For&nbsp;the fourth quarter, Ryder sees adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$3.32&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;$3.52&nbsp;against <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">the consensus of&nbsp;$3.57</a>.

Ryder System Reports Mixed Q3: Contractual Growth Meets Freight Market Challenges

Longshoremen are expected to drop their cargo hooks Tuesday, potentially freezing activity at some of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41086120/us-market-soars-after-fed-rate-cut-but-chartist-warns-of-potential-stock-plunge-citing-this-clas">the U.S.&#8217;s busiest ports</a>.
What Happened: According <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/30/business/port-strike-dockworkers.html">to</a> the New York Times, a union showdown on the East and Gulf coasts with their employers could halt billions of dollars <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41097541/amazon-apple-tesla-brace-for-supply-chain-disruptions-as-potential-east-coast-dockworkers-strike">worth of goods</a>, potentially complicating shopping ahead of the holidays.
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) hasn't orchestrated a strike this big since 1977, but its got leverage this time. Recent labor victories by big unions such as the Teamsters and the United Auto Workers (UAW) have <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/10/35492334/gm-uaw-reach-tentative-agreement-potentially-putting-an-end-to-costly-6-week-strike">set a high bar</a>.
Longshoremen are now looking for their slice of the pie.
In addition to demanding a pay raise, longshoremen are also wary of labor-saving tech creeping into their workspace.
With a strike potentially costing the economy billions per day, President Joe Biden could step in using a 1947 law to force the longshoremen back to work.
But Biden, who supported the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/09/34922731/biden-makes-historic-visit-to-auto-worker-picket-line-tells-union-to-you-deserve-raise">UAW strike last year</a>, said Sunday he would <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?538805-1/president-biden-speaks-reporters-dover-air-force-base">not</a> intervene with the longshoremen strike. 
The United States Maritime Alliance, representing the employers, is locked in a months-long standoff with the ILA over wages and benefits.
The union is asking for a $5-an-hour raise for each of the next six years. This would bring their top hourly rate to $69 — a significant bump from the current $39 an hour.
Compare that to their West Coast counterparts, who will be pulling in $60.85 an hour by 2027, and it's easy to see why the ILA feels shortchanged.

Why It Matters: The ILA&#8217;s 47,000 members handle three-fifths of U.S. container traffic.
Many businesses, fearing a potential strike, have scrambled to get goods through the ports before Tuesday.
With some cargo still stranded at sea, delays are inevitable. The backlog could reportedly take weeks to clear, even if the strike is brief. 
Various distributors, including MHW Ltd., fear the strike could affect the Thanksgiving holiday. MHW chief operating officer John Wrenn told the New York Times that sales &#8220;will just be lost because products will not be on the shelves.&#8221;
A different union operates West Coast ports, leaving them unaffected. 
Observers say trucking goods from the West Coast to the East is too expensive to serve as a workaround. 
The ILA has said they won't disrupt work on cruise ships.

Longshoremen Strike Looms, Standoff Could Cost $1B A Day, Leave Thanksgiving Prep In A Pinch

LYFT Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYFT#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>) is poised to miss on earnings when it reports <a href="http://Uber Q2 Earnings: Revenue And EPS Beat, 30M Trips Per Day, CEO Highlights Record Growth And More">second-quarter results</a> on Thursday as it faces concerns over consumer trends and market share, analysts say.
KeyBanc Capital Markets forecasts earnings before income tax, depreciation and amortization to come in at $97 million for the quarter, below analyst consensus of $101 million. It expects gross bookings of $4.05 billion to narrowly miss Wall Street expectations of $4.06 billion.
&#8220;We believe many ridesharing use cases are more resilient to macro but do believe riders can opt for cheaper alternatives like public transportation in some scenarios,&#8221; KeyBanc analyst Justin Patterson said in a note.
&#8220;Thus, we believe consumer strength trends will be important to monitor.&#8221;
RBC Capital Markets expects Lyft to post $97.5 million in EBITDA for the second quarter, below analyst consensus of $98.1 million, and $4.053 billion in bookings that will miss analyst expectations of $4.058 billion.

&#8220;Our recent driver supply analysis, conducted in July &#8217;24, indicated some erosion in rider pick-up times, where pick-up times for UBER came down significantly compared to LYFT,&#8221; RBC analyst Brad Erickson said in a note.
&#8220;Although we have noticed some fluctuation in both directions for UBER and LYFT in terms of pickup times and total travel time, we believe this is not necessarily a red flag but worth monitoring.&#8221;
RBC has also noticed &#8220;some weakness&#8221; in Lyft&#8217;s data related to third-party arrangements with DoorDash and other delivery services.
&#8220;It is important to note price continues to move in lock-step, giving us confidence LYFT continues to keep pace with its major competitor,&#8221; Erickson wrote.
Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) reported fiscal second-quarter 2024 revenue growing 16% year-on-year to $10.7 billion, beating Wall Street consensus of $10.57 billion. The company also posted GAAP EPS of 47 cents; analysts consensus expectations were 31 cents.
Price Action: Lyft gained 3.03% to $10.89 as of Tuesday&#8217;s mid-day trading.
Most exchange-traded funds that track Lyft also advanced on Tuesday.

In January, rental car giant Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HTZ#NASDAQ">HTZ</a>) scaled back plans to buy 100,000 EVs after seeing that their resale plummeted much faster than expected, the New York Times<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/14/business/electric-vehicles-rental-cars.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share"> reported.</a> 
A main reason why used EVs lose so much value is because Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) lowered the prices on new models last year to boost sales, the New York Times reported.
This has left many rental car outfits scrambling to resell EVs at deep discounts and apprehensive to start buying more of them.
EV manufacturers have sold 1.4% of their cars and trucks to rental companies so far this year, down from selling 4% of them in 2023, according to S&amp;P Global Mobility. So far this year, that number is just 1.4 percent.

Rental Car Companies Back Away From Hard-To-Resell Electric Vehicles

The U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in April, well below Wall Street expectations of 240,000, strengthening bets that the Federal Reserve will be able to cut interest rates in the coming months. Health care and social assistance led the way with a gain of 87,000 jobs.
The unemployment rate ticked higher to 3.9% against expectations it would hold steady at 3.8%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% sequentially and 3.9% year over year, both below consensus estimates. The jobless rate tied for the highest level since January 2022. The labor force participation rate, or those actively looking for work, was unchanged at 62.7%.

Avis had a ~30% increase in pricing since 2019, and while the analyst believed this strength to decelerate, the ability to sustain a level of pricing growth above historical averages could create additional tailwinds to Avis&#8217;s earnings.
In addition, a more benign competitive environment may provide upside and further cost efficiencies.
The analyst expects the company&#8217;s FY25<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;revenue to be $12.025 billion.</a>

The pandemic has placed the <a href="https://nbaa.org/">$200 billion per year</a> private jet industry on an upward trajectory. Many with wealth (businesses included) finally got off the fence in 2020-2021 and took their first flight. Conventional wisdom in private aviation remains that if a traveler has the means to fly private and does it once, then that traveler will do it again. Peder von Harten, vice president of Nicholas Air, says the pricing of used aircraft has increased by <a href="https://privatejetcardcomparisons.com/tag/publicly-traded-private-jet-companies/">30% to 40%</a>. Another key private jet player, Jetcraft Corp., has gone all the way to Asia to find used aircraft for its fleet.
With big manufacturers still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, supply is drastically lagging behind the explosive demand for private flights. What Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Cornelius Vanderbilt And Other Big Execs Have In Common

Boeing Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ba#NYSE">BA</a>) opened higher Monday following rotation from tech stocks into travel.
On Monday afternoon, airline heavy SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xtn#NYSE">XTN</a>) was trading up 1% while technology ETF PowerShares QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/qqq#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) was trading down 1.5%.
Although rotation in the market is keeping S&amp;P 500 near all-time highs, traders may find it difficult to find bullish stocks. It appears institutions may believe re-opening stocks are the next bull market and option traders bet&nbsp;$543,936 the price of Boeing is going higher.

Why It&rsquo;s Important: When a sweep order occurs, it indicates the trader wanted to get into a position quickly and is anticipating an imminent large move in stock price. A sweeper pays market price for the call option instead of placing a bid, which sweeps the order book of multiple exchanges to fill the order immediately.
These types of call option orders are usually made by institutions, and retail investors can find watching for sweepers useful because it indicates &ldquo;smart money&rdquo; has entered into a position.
