<p>Markets faltered on Friday, with Wall Street reeling as investors hurried to shed risk in the face of mounting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">inflation and tariff uncertainties.</a></p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.1% by 1:30 p.m. trading in New York, on track to end the week with losses. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2.6%, and the Dow fell 1.7%. </p>
<p>All members of the Magnificent Seven group were in the red, with <strong>Amazon.com Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and <strong>Alphabet Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) marking the widest drops, both down 4.4%.</p>
<p>Earlier on Friday, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditure price index – rose 2.8% on a yearly basis in February, surprising estimates of 2.7%. </p>
<p>Investor anxiety deepened following the latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumers, which showed 5-year forward inflation expectations jumping to 4.1% — a 0.2-point increase from prior estimates and the highest reading since February 1993. As stocks fell in unison, a flight to safety ensued, sending gold up 1% to a record-breaking $3,090 per ounce. Treasury bonds also rallied, with yields declining across all maturities. </p>
<p>Price action in commodities was mixed with oil down 1% and natural gas up 2.4%. Sentiment in crypto also took a sharp hit, with <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down by 4% to below $84,000, flipping to weekly losses.</p>

<p>April tends to be a favorable month for U.S. equities, and history makes a compelling case for this. Over the past 95 years, the S&amp;P 500 has gained an average of 1.1% in April, finishing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">higher 61% of the time.</a></p>
<p>In April, the index notched some of its most powerful monthly rallies in history, surging 43.6% in April 1933 and 17.9% in April 2020. Yet, it&#8217;s not always been a smooth ride — the worst April returns were a 20% crash in 1932 and a 9.5% drop in 1970.</p>
<p>Zooming in on the past three decades, April's track record becomes even more convincing. </p>
<p>The <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), the benchmark ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500, delivered an average gain of 1.9% over the last 30 Aprils, making it the second-best month of the year after November. SPY ended April in the green 77% of the time.</p>

<p>Since its inception in 1999, XLF has risen an average of 2.7% during the month, with gains coming in 65% of the time. The seasonal strength is largely tied to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicks off in April and is typically led by major banks. Optimism surrounding annual earnings outlooks often provides a boost.</p>
<p>XLF has already outperformed the broader market in 2025, gaining 4.5% year-to-date. <p>April is historically the best month for <strong>Amazon.com Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), with an average gain of 7.6% and a 70% success rate. </p>

<p>Wall Street soared Monday, kicking off the week in full risk-on mode as investors welcomed signs of easing trade tensions and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44459470/us-business-activity-rebounds-as-services-growth-outpaces-forecasts-yet-cost-pressures-intensify">stronger-than-expected economic data. </a></p>
<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>&#8216;s softer tone on potential tariffs ahead of the looming April 2, 2025 deadline helped calm nerves. Adding to the optimism, fresh business surveys showed a strong rebound in services activity in March, easing recession worries.</p>
<p>U.S. economic activity accelerated in March, with the Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rising rom 51.6 in February to to 53.5. Services PMI jumped to 54.3 — well above consensus forecasts of 50.8 and sharply higher than the prior month's 51.0 reading. Yet, the report also flagged a notable uptick in cost pressures, as businesses reported growing concerns over input prices, likely linked to heightened speculation around potential tariff measures.</p>
<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> jumped 1.75% by midday in New York, on track for its best one-day performance since mid-January. The <strong>Nasdaq 100 </strong>rallied 2%, mirroring gains from March 14 — the index's strongest day since early November 2024.</p>
<p>Small caps outperformed their large-cap peers, underscoring the market's improving risk appetite. The <strong>Russell 2000</strong> surged 2.8%, marking its best session since the post-election rally on Nov. 6, 2024.</p>
<p><strong>Tesla Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) led the charge on both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100, soaring 9.8%, on track for its sharpest one-day gain since early November.</p>
<p>All seven mega-cap tech stocks posted solid gains, with the <strong>Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>) climbing 2.9% after Friday's 1.4% rise, setting up what could be its strongest two-day advance since early January.</p>
<p>Every S&amp;P 500 sector, except utilities, traded in positive territory, with consumer discretionary and technology leading the pack.</p>
<p>The U.S. dollar index edged higher, eyeing a fourth consecutive session of gains. Meanwhile, Treasury yields spiked across the curve as investors rotated out of safe-haven assets. The 10-year yield jumped seven basis points to 4.32%, while the <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.9%.</p>
<p>Gold pulled back 0.3% to $3,014 per ounce, on pace for its third straight decline, as investors favored riskier assets.</p>
<p>Oil prices gained 1.5% after Trump threatened a 25% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44460897/oil-prices-rally-exxon-hits-16-week-highs-as-trump-vows-25-tariffs-on-any-country-buying-venezuelan-crude">countries importing Venezuelan crude.</a></p>
<p>Crypto-related assets also rallied. <strong>Bitcoin </strong>(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) climbed 2.7% to $88,400, while <strong>MicroStrategy Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) jumped 7.4% and <strong>Coinbase Global Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>) rose 6.2%.</p>

<p>Another indicator is the Consumer Confidence Board Consumer Confidence Index <a href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence">which fell</a> sharply by seven points in February, indicating pessimism about current and future economic conditions. </p>
<p>"In February, consumer confidence registered the largest monthly decline since August 2021," said <strong>Stephanie Guichard</strong>, senior economist, Global Indicators at The Conference Board. </p>
<p>"This is the third consecutive month-on-month decline, bringing the Index to the bottom of the range that has prevailed since 2022, Guichard added. </p>
<p>American households are running out of emergency funds which could be contributing to the bleaker financial outlooks. Data from the Federal Reserve shows that households' ability to come up with $2,000 for an emergency expense within the next month is at the lowest level since the survey started in 2015.</p>
<p>"Taking into account that the CPI level today is 35% higher than in 2015, the situation is even worse," said <strong>Dr. Torsten Slok</strong>, chief economist for Apollo Global Management.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>What Else: </strong>Retailers are reporting demand is slowing, with <strong>Kohl's Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) CEO <strong>Ashley Buchanan</strong> saying <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44262764/kohls-ceo-warns-of-pretty-challenging-environment-for-consumers-expects-value-seeking-to-grow-over-next-3-months">last week</a> that customers making less than $100,000 are now feeling squeezed. </p>
<p>Many <strong>Dollar General Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DG#NYSE">DG</a>) customers "only have enough money for the basic essentials," said CEO <strong>Todd Vasos</strong>. Meanwhile, sales among higher-income shoppers have picked up as bargain-hunting intensifies. </p>

<p>U.S. stocks traded sideways on Thursday as investors digested Federal Reserve Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong>'s remarks on inflation and tariffs following the Federal Open Market<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44405112/tariff-inflation-may-be-transitory-powell-says-stocks-rally-bitcoin-clears-85000-as-bulls-return"> Committee meeting on Wednesday.</a> </p>
<p>Powell downplayed concerns that tariffs imposed by President <strong>Donald Trump </strong>could reignite inflation, calling their impact "transitory." Yet, the Fed's latest projections signaled slower economic growth, rising unemployment and hotter inflation. </p>
<p>By midday in New York, major indexes were little changed, with financial stocks leading modest gains. </p>
<p><strong>Berkshire Hathaway Inc. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) extended its rally to fresh record highs, on track for a sixth consecutive positive session. Wall Street Holds Steady As Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Notches Record Highs: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

<p>U.S. consumers are feeling the cost of living squeeze amid higher housing costs, slower wage growth and rising unemployment fears, raising concerns about how much longer they can keep <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">spending on discretionary items.</a></p>
<p>While the labor market has provided a cushion thus far, cracks are emerging, testing the resilience of household budgets and their ability to sustain the broader economy.</p>
<p>In a report released Thursday,<strong> Joe Wadford</strong>, an economist at the Bank of America Institute, said that while overall consumer spending remains resilient, financial headwinds are mounting—particularly for lower-income consumers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Consumer resilience continues, but cost-of-living increases, slowing wage growth, and unemployment fears are a headwind for some,&#8221; Wadford said.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Housing Costs Are Squeezing Budgets</strong></h3>
<p>The biggest challenge for many households is the rising cost of housing, which is hitting lower-income consumers the hardest. According to Bank of America payments data, rent and mortgage payments for this group were up 11% in February compared to the 2023 average, while higher-income customers saw a smaller increase of 9%.</p>
<p>&#8220;It's likely that lower-income consumers are getting hit harder as apartment rental increases spread to less expensive areas,&#8221; the report said. </p>
<p>Higher-income households may be faring better because &#8220;homeownership tends to skew toward higher-income individuals, and monthly mortgage payments typically do not change over time.&#8221;</p>
<p>For lower-income households, housing is their largest expense, consuming nearly half of their after-tax income, followed by transportation, groceries and utility bills.</p>
<p>&#8220;These expenses account for around 95% of their after-tax income,&#8221; Bank of America data revealed, leaving little room for discretionary spending.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Consumers Have Slightly Cut Back Spending</strong></h3>
<p>Despite rising costs, discretionary spending—on goods such as electronics, travel, and restaurants—has remained relatively stable over the past year. </p>
<p>Bank of America's payments data shows that while spending on these items has declined compared to two years ago, the rate of decrease has slowed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Customers with lower incomes spent a higher share of their paychecks on necessities and have seen a larger decline in discretionary spending over the past two years than other income cohorts,&#8221; the report said. </p>
<p>Yet, the report highlighted that the rate of decline has more than halved in the past year, with discretionary spending as a share of total outflows falling by just 0.3 percentage points in February, compared to a 0.8 percentage point decline the previous year.</p>
<p>Discretionary-related stocks have struggled this year<span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">. The <strong>Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>), which tracks major names like <strong>Amazon.com Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), <strong>Tesla Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), <strong>Home Depot Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HD#NYSE">HD</a>), and Booking Holdings Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BKNG#NASDAQ">BKNG</a>), is </span>down 11% year to date, underperforming all other S&amp;P 500 sectors.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Labor Market Is Holding Up, But Cracks Are Emerging</strong></h3>
<p>A strong labor market has helped sustain consumer spending so far, but that is not warranted to be the case also in the future.</p>
<p>Households across all income levels have seen post-tax wages and salaries rise year over year. While deposits are declining, &#8220;they're not declining as fast as they were last year,&#8221; according to Bank of America data.</p>
<p>Signs of weakness are emerging. The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 4.1% in February, higher than in previous years, and consumer expectations around job security have deteriorated. </p>
<p>In its March economic projection, the Federal Reserve upwardly revised the unemployment rate from 4.3% to 4.4% for 2025.</p>
<p>The University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers found that 66% of respondents in March expect unemployment to worsen over the next 12 months—the highest share in the past 10 years.</p>
<p>&#8220;It's 14% higher than it was in the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic,&#8221; the report highlighted, suggesting that consumer fears about job losses could soon impact their spending decisions.</p>

<p>Stocks were little moved during midday Monday trading in New York, as a mixed retail sales report failed to generate a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">bullish response from investors.</a></p>
<p>Retail sales rose 0.2% month-over-month in February, rebounding from a concerning 1.2% decline in January but falling short of the 0.6% forecast. Yet, when excluding volatile categories, the picture looked slightly brighter.</p>
<p>The control group measure — which strips out sales from auto dealers, building materials, gas stations, office supply stores, mobile home dealers and tobacco retailers — rose 1% in February, fully offsetting January's 1% decline and significantly surpassing the expected 0.2% increase.</p>
<p>Despite this, concerns over a broader economic slowdown remain, with traders now looking ahead to Fed Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong>'s speech on Wednesday for reassurance that the U.S. economy is not headed for a recession.</p>
<p>Major indices remained broadly flat, though small caps outperformed. Energy led sector gains, while consumer discretionary lagged.</p>
<p>In currency markets, the U.S. dollar index softened 0.3%, heading towards six-month lows. Gold continued to edge higher, hovering around the symbolic all-time high of $3,000 per ounce level.</p>
<p>Oil prices rebounded 0.8%, as crude rallied following President Donald Trump's vow to strike the Houthis in the Red Sea. <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) climbed 1.4%, recovering some ground after a 2% drop on Sunday.</p>

Wall Street Wavers On Mixed Retail Sales, Nvidia Falls Ahead Of GTC AI Conference, Intel Rallies: What's Driving Markets Monday?

<p>U.S. retail sales edged up only slightly in February, falling well short of expectations and keeping alive concerns about consumer strength <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44355195/retail-sales-rebound-less-than-expected-in-february-online-healthcare-spending-show-strong-gains">after January's dire contraction.</a></p>
<p>Yet, a closer look at the latest data continues to reveal pockets of resilience leaving investors and economists debating whether consumer demand is cooling or simply shifting. </p>
<p>In data released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the retail sales figure showed a 0.2% monthly growth in February, following a downwardly revised 1.2% drop in January. The headline figure missed economist estimates of 0.6%. </p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Far From Being An Outright Recession</h3>
<p>&#8220;The unfavorable surprise on U.S. headline retail sales—monthly growth of 0.2% compared to the consensus forecast of 0.6%—was not reflected in the other numbers in this data release,&#8221; said <strong>Mohamed El-Erian</strong>, chief economic advisor at Allianz.</p>
<p>A particularly important measure, known as the retail sales &#8220;control group&#8221;—which excludes spending at auto dealers, building materials, gas stations, office supply stores, mobile home dealers, and tobacco retailers—jumped 1% in February. This fully offset January's 1% decline and handily beat estimates of a modest 0.2% gain.</p>
<p>This control group is closely watched because it feeds directly into GDP calculations, making it a key indicator of underlying consumer demand. </p>
<p><strong>Joseph Brusuelas</strong>, chief economist at RSM US LP, said the data remains consistent with a slowing but still solid pace of household spending. </p>
<p>&#8220;On a three-month average annualized pace, the control group advanced 2.6%,&#8221; Brusuelas said. &#8220;Yes, the economy is slowing, but not in line with anything near a recession yet.&#8221;</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Restaurants And Bars See Sharp Drop</strong>s</h3>
<p>Not all areas of consumer spending fared well. </p>
<p>One of the most striking data points was the decline in restaurant and bar sales, which fell 1.54% in February—the largest drop since February 2023, as highlighted by <strong>Kevin Gordon,</strong> senior investment strategist at Charles Schwabb. </p>
<p>&#8220;Over the last three months, restaurant sales have collapsed 8.5% at an annual rate,&#8221; <strong>Reinassance Macro Research </strong>indicated.</p>
<p>This pullback suggests that discretionary spending may be softening as households become more selective about where to spend their money.</p>
<p>&#8220;Notable weakness in restaurants and bars—the largest decline in two years—with no growth over the last three months,&#8221; <strong>Gregory Daco</strong>, chief economist at Ernst &amp; Young US, said. </p>
<p>&#8220;Spending growth at restaurant chains decelerated from -1.7% in January to -7.5% in February while spending at independent restaurants turned negative, failing from +2.6% in January to -2.7% in February,&#8221; Sara Senatore, analyst at Bank of America, wrote in a note Monday.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe this sequential&nbsp;deceleration is largely a combination of negative weather trends that worsened from January and the impact of calendar shifts, including one less day (2024 had a leap day) and the Valentine&#8217;s Day shift from a Wednesday in 2024 to a Friday in 2025,&#8221; she added. </p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: Consumer Staples Rally, Discretionary Stocks Lag</h3>
<p>Stocks tied to non-discretionary consumer spending saw a solid rebound Monday, as investors rotated into defensive plays. </p>
<p>The <strong>Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) rose 0.9%, led by <strong>Brown-Forman Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BF#NYSE">BF</a>), which surged 2.8% on the back of rising U.S.-Europe trade tensions over whiskey tariffs. </p>
<p>Other major gainers included <strong>Archer-Daniels-Midland Company</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADM#NYSE">ADM</a>), <strong>The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EL#NYSE">EL</a>), and <strong>Constellation Brands Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STZ#NYSE">STZ</a>), all of which climbed about 2%.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P Retail ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XRT#NYSE">XRT</a>) gained 1.1%, with notable jumps from <strong>Guess Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GES#NYSE">GES</a>), up 32%, <strong>EVgo Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EVGO#NASDAQ">EVGO</a>), up 7%, and <strong>American Eagle Outfitters</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AEO#NYSE">AEO</a>), up 6.8%.</p>
<p>However, the consumer discretionary sector struggled to gain traction. </p>
<p>The <strong>Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) inched up just 0.1%, weighed down by concerns over spending cutbacks. Still, a few travel and leisure names saw gains, with <strong>Airbnb Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABNB#NASDAQ">ABNB</a>), <strong>eBay Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EBAY#NASDAQ">EBAY</a>), <strong>Carnival Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>), and <strong>Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) each rising around 3%.</p>
