Risk sentiment took a sharp blow Wednesday afternoon after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell linked rising tariffs to higher inflation and slower growth, while making it clear the central bank has no intention <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44848474/fed-chair-powell-says-tariffs-lead-to-temporary-rise-in-inflation">of cushioning market losses.</a>
In remarks at the Economic Club of Chicago, Powell said the inflationary effects of tariffs could be more persistent than previously thought, and warned that current policy uncertainty makes it difficult to gauge their full impact. 
Most notably for Wall Street, Powell addressed the notion of a so-called "Fed put"—the belief that the central bank would intervene if markets drop sharply—and offered a blunt response: "I'm going to say no."
That single line pushed traders to recalibrate expectations for any near-term monetary support.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Tumble As Chipmakers Extend Losses</h3>
By 3:15 p.m. ET, the S&amp;P 500 – as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) – had dropped 3.1% to 5,230 points, while the Nasdaq 100 – tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) plunged 4.1% to 18,050, dragged down by the tech-heavy weighting of the index. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 838 points, or 2.1%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index also fell 2.1%.
Nearly every sector turned red, with the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) nosediving 5%. Energy stocks were the sole exception, buoyed by higher crude prices and safe-haven commodity demand.
Semiconductors were particularly hard hit following fresh export restrictions on Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) chips to China. 
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) plummeted 6.8%, with Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) both down around 10%.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold Shines In Flight To Safety</h3>
As stocks tumbled, gold prices climbed, continuing their powerful 2025 rally. The precious metal hit new record highs, rising to over $2,350 an ounce, and is now up 26% year to date. 
With the Nasdaq 100 down 23% over the same period, gold has outperformed the tech index by nearly 50% in less than four months.
Gold's appeal has grown amid mounting inflation concerns, policy uncertainty, and geopolitical tension.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Powell: No Market Rescue This Time</h3>
Powell's refusal to endorse the "Fed put" marked a sharp shift in tone from the central bank's more accommodative stance in past downturns. While he acknowledged market volatility, he said both equity and bond markets were "functioning" and "orderly."
"Markets are struggling with a lot of uncertainty, and that means volatility," Powell said. "But having said that, markets are functioning."
The Fed chair emphasized that rate decisions will continue to focus on economic data, especially inflation and employment, and not on asset prices.

U.S. major indices traded lower at midday Wednesday, pressured by sharp declines in tech and semiconductor stocks after Washington tightened chip <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">export restrictions to China.</a>
The U.S. government has barred Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) from selling its H20 chips to China — a move that could wipe out an estimated $5.5 billion from the company's projected quarterly revenue. Nvidia shares slid nearly 7%.
Other chipmakers also felt the heat. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) dropped 6% as its MI308 chips fall under the new licensing requirements.

(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) missed quarterly revenue estimates, sending its shares down 5%.
On the macro front, March retail sales surprised to the upside, rising 1.4% month-over-month — topping forecasts of 1.3% and marking the strongest monthly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44837237/march-retail-sales-post-highest-surge-in-over-two-years-as-us-consumers-anticipate-tariff-jitters">gain since January 2023.</a>
Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar saw renewed selling pressure, with the dollar index dipping back below 100. Treasury yields were little changed, with the 10-year yield holding steady near 4.33%.
Gold continued its stellar run, surging 2.5% to a fresh record high of $3,320 per ounce as demand for safe-haven assets remains robust.
In commodities, oil prices rebounded sharply, with WTI crude climbing 2% to $62 a barrel. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also edged up 1.3% to around $84,500.
All eyes are now on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who is set to speak at the Economic Club of Chicago later this afternoon.

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 15, 2025

U.S. stock futures were volatile on Tuesday following a two-day advance. Futures of major benchmark indices were mixed in premarket.
Donald Trump hinted at helping the car companies while talking to reporters in his Oval Office on Monday. He explained that automakers require a transition period to shift production from Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere.
&#8220;And they need a little bit of time because they're going to make them here, but they need a little bit of time. So I'm talking about things like that,&#8221; he said.
Stocks advanced for two consecutive days after he exempted smartphones, computers, and semiconductors from the reciprocal tariffs on Friday. However, he hinted that he may look at levying duties on the chips imported into the U.S. on Sunday in a Truth Social post.
The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.38% and the two-year bond was at 3.86%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing an 82.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, rose in premarket on Tuesday. The SPY was up 0.013% to $539.19, while the QQQ advanced 0.22% to $458.47, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From Last Session:
Led by technology stocks, U.S. equities closed higher on Monday. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) shares surged 2.2%, and Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELLL#NYSE">DELLL</a>) gained approximately 4%, contributing to a roughly 1% rise in the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>).
Financials presented a mixed picture, with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) reporting stronger-than-anticipated first-quarter earnings, while M&amp;T Bank Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTB#NYSE">MTB</a>) posted weaker-than-expected results.
Real estate, utilities, and consumer staples sectors recorded the most significant gains on Monday. Conversely, consumer discretionary stocks trended lower.
As of Monday&#8217;s close, the Dow Jones index was 10.1% lower than its 52-week high of 45,073.63 points. The S&amp;P 500 index was 12.06% lower than its previous high of 6,147.43 points, and the Nasdaq 100 index was down 15.42% from its last record high of 22,222.61 points.
The Dow Jones index climbed 312 points or 0.78% to 40,524.79, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index advanced 0.79% to 5,405.97. Nasdaq Composite rose to end 0.64% higher at 16,831.48, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, jumped 1.11% to 1,880.88.

Insights From Analysts:
Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood said that she sees a &#8220;light at the end of the tunnel,&#8221; despite the ongoing<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44807265/cathie-wood-says-shock-therapy-from-trumps-trade-moves-may-end-prolonged-economic-slump"> tariff turmoil</a>. According to Wood, tariffs could be the catalyst to end a three-year "rolling recession."
She said that Trump&#8217;s decision to bring Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent into the process indicates a move to reduce both tariffs and non-tariff trade obstacles. She contends this shift wouldn&#8217;t have occurred without the initial &#8220;shock therapy&#8221; of aggressive trade measures.
The slowdown caused by the tariff introduction will give the administration and the Federal Reserve "more degrees of freedom to stimulate than most investors have been expecting,&#8221; she said.
This will create a "clarion call" for tax cuts, deregulation, and lower interest rates, ultimately paving the way for economic recovery, Wood added.

The analysts at BlackRock extended their tactical horizon back to six to 12 months and resumed their positive view on U.S., while still expecting the &#8220;ongoing risk asset volatility and potentially sharp reversals.&#8221;
Spiking yields in long-term U.S. Treasuries seemed to be a factor in the change in tariff tactics, the weekly note stated.
&#8220;We stay underweight long-term Treasuries, our highest conviction view: tariffs are likely to add to already sticky inflation, and congressional budget plans last week reinforce the outlook for persistent budget deficits. We favor gold instead as a portfolio diversifier.&#8221;
According to BlackRock, the broad-based equity selloff has created opportunities to tap into certain sectors, and &#8220;selectivity is key.&#8221;
&#8220;We still like U.S. technology benefitting from the AI buildout and adoption. We also favor global banks. That includes U.S. banks given the scope for deregulation even with some potential economic pain.&#8221;

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 14, 2025

Goldman Sachs analysts swiftly raised their earnings forecasts for top U.S. tech giants after a surprise weekend decision from the White House shielded key electronics from steep new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44777482/trump-tariff-wars-chinas-new-rule-to-exempt-nvidia-qualcomm-and-others-from-levies-but-these-chip-companies-will-be-hit-with-125-tariffs">tariffs on Chinese imports.</a>
In a note shared Monday, analyst Michael Ng said U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued guidance late Friday clarifying that 20 tech product categories—including smartphones, servers, routers, solid-state drives and semiconductor equipment—would be exempt from the sweeping 125% tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. 
The exemptions apply retroactively to April 5 and may soften the blow for key hardware manufacturers facing escalating trade tensions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Apple, Dell, HP Get A Reprieve</h3>
Goldman Sachs reversed recent estimate cuts on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>), Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPE#NYSE">HPE</a>) and HP Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPQ#NYSE">HPQ</a>). 
"These adjustments largely reverse the estimate cuts we made on April 7," Ng said, tying the swing directly to the reversal in tariff policy.
Thanks to improved gross margins, Goldman now sees stronger profitability ahead for these firms.
According to the investment bank, the move is particularly favorable for smartphone, PC, server and networking equipment makers. Still, the bank stopped short of sounding the all-clear, saying that "ongoing uncertainty in trade policy and growth" continues to pose a risk to the sector.
Apple received one of the largest upgrades. Goldman lifted its 12-month target price from $242 to $259 and increased projected earnings per share for fiscal years 2025 through 2027 by 6% on average, with estimates now at $7.37, $8.27 and $9.24, respectively. The revised valuation assumes a 30-times multiple on earnings one year forward, consistent with prior models.
Shares of the Cupertino-based iPhone maker climbed 5.5% in Monday&#8217;s premarket session, nearly reversing the losses it suffered following Donald Trump&#8217;s tariff announcement on April 2. 
Dell also saw a notable earnings bump. Goldman raised its fiscal 2026 EPS forecast from $7.57 to $9.13 and reiterated a target price of $95. That reflects a 9-times multiple on forward earnings, unchanged from previous assumptions.
Dell Technologies Inc. jumped 6%, also reclaiming ground lost earlier this month.
For HP Inc., while the rating remained Neutral, Goldman increased its fiscal 2025 and 2026 EPS projections by 10% on average, now forecasting $3.48 and $3.52. The 12-month price target holds steady at $27, based on a 7.5-times forward earnings multiple.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. gained 4%, while HP Inc. advanced 3.7%.
The broader Technology&nbsp;Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>)&nbsp;rose 2.1% by 8:00 a.m. ET. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why These Products Matter</h3>
The products now exempted from tariffs make up a significant chunk of the U.S.-China tech trade.
Data from the International Trade Centre show the U.S. exported $15 billion worth of electrical goods to China in 2024, along with $8.7 billion to Hong Kong and $7.3 billion to Taiwan. Smartphone exports alone totaled $5.6 billion to Greater China.
Imports, however, dwarf those figures. Last year, the U.S. imported $159 billion of related electronics from China and its territories, including $58.9 billion worth of smartphones.
These figures underline how deeply intertwined the two economies remain—particularly in the tech supply chain. 
Before the latest White House decision, some experts estimated the price of a brand-new iPhone 16 Pro could have surged past $2,250—a jump of roughly 60%.

Shares of technology stocks are trading lower amid an overall market reversal following Wednesday's surge.

After a spectacular risk-on rally on Wednesday, Wall Street sharply pulled back during Thursday's trading, as investors digested the 90-day tariff pause and weighed lingering economic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">risks to the outlook.</a>
Even a sharply lower-than-expected inflation report did little to support risk sentiment — a testament to how susceptible investors <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">remain to economic uncertainty.</a>
The Consumer Price Index fell from 2.8% year-over-year in February to 2.4% in March, below expectations of 2.6% and marking the lowest reading since September 2024. On a monthly basis, inflation was negative by 0.1% — the first decline since May 2020.
While the data bolstered the case for near-term Fed rate cuts — markets are pricing in an 88% chance of a 0.25% move by June — traders remained cautious amid the ongoing tariff drama.

The S&amp;P 500 dropped 4.8% by midday in New York, erasing about half of Wednesday's historic gains, which had marked the index&#8217;s strongest rally since 2008. The Nasdaq 100 tumbled 5.4%, while small caps in the Russell 2000 sank 5.3%.
Despite the pullback in equities, traditional safe havens like Treasuries and the dollar also fell, raising concerns about waning international confidence in U.S. assets.
The U.S. dollar index — as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) — nosedived 2% to the 101 level, its lowest since late September 2024.
Yields on 30-year Treasuries surged by 11 basis points to 4.85%, as bond vigilantes appeared to reassert themselves —effectively flashing red signals in Washington.
Meanwhile, gold continued to deliver stellar returns, with bullion hitting fresh record highs of $3,175 per ounce, up 2.4% on the day. Over the past two sessions, gold has rallied nearly 6%, the biggest two-day gain since March 2020.
On Thursday, the White House announced that the actual tariff rate on Chinese imports will be 145%. Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget plan extending the Trump-era tax cuts. Trump welcomed the news, saying it laid the groundwork for what he called "the largest tax and regulation cuts&#8221; in American history.

The Hang Seng Index briefly crossed into bear market territory at one point on Wednesday, losing over 20% from its recent high following the U.S.&#8217;s escalation of tariffs on Chinese imports. 
Although the index pared some of the losses on Thursday with 2.1% gains after President Donald Trump decided on a 90-day pause, the shockwaves are being felt across a variety of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">U.S.-listed ETFs</a>, focusing investor attention on trade-sensitive assets.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">ETFs Under Pressure</h1>
Direct exposure to Hong Kong has taken a tangible dent. The iShares MSCI Hong Kong ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWH#NYSE">EWH</a>), which tends to follow closely the performance of the Hang Seng, has tracked the index&#8217;s sharp depreciation over recent weeks. The fund has declined 12.26% in the past month. The ETF&#8217;s decline is reflective of investor disappointment in the region&#8217;s prospects for growth, as well as general concern regarding the build-up of geopolitical tensions.
But the effect extends well beyond Hong Kong-centric funds. A number of ETF categories with indirect exposure to China or global trade patterns are exhibiting signs of strain:
Emerging Market ETFs (Ex-China) such as the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EMXC#NASDAQ">EMXC</a>) have experienced renewed popularity as investors attempt to avoid direct Chinese equity risk. Yet these funds are still exposed to general macroeconomic weakness due to the trade war. The shares in the fund have collectively declined about 3.4% over the past month.
Global Equity ETFs like the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VT#NYSE">VT</a>) and iShares MSCI ACWI ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACWI#NASDAQ">ACWI</a>) are not isolated either. They both have positions in Chinese and Hong Kong equities, and although their diversification helps take the sting, the Asian equities pullback is starting to take its toll on overall return.

U.S. Sector ETFs are also responding to the escalating tension.
Technology ETFs such as SPDR Select Sector Fund &#8211; Technology (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NASDAQ">XLK</a>) are at risk from China&#8217;s revenue and supply chain disruptions. In the past four weeks, the fund has declined more than 6%.
Industrial ETFs such as the SPDR Select Sector Fund &#8211; Industrial (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NYSE">XLI</a>) might be hit if Chinese tariffs bear on U.S. exports of manufacturing or essential imported parts.
Agricultural ETFs like the Invesco DB Agriculture Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DBA#NYSE">DBA</a>) might be hurt if China retaliates by restricting purchases of U.S. agricultural products.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Market Fallout </h1>
The Hang Seng&#8217;s brief plunge into bear market range — its most steep drop in more than a year — has increased worries about global economic stability. Washington&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">plan to add tariffs</a> on a wide range of Chinese merchandise ignited the decline in the index, which invited a retaliatory response from China — an 84% tariff on U.S. goods.
Although the initial impact has been on Chinese and Hong Kong markets, the wider implications are difficult to avoid. Investors can now expect greater market volatility as news surrounding trade talks continues to influence sentiment.
Possible further <a href="https://www.oecd.org/en/about/news/press-releases/2025/03/global-economic-outlook-uncertain-as-growth-slows-inflationary-pressures-persist-and-trade-policies-cloud-outlook.html">slowing </a>of global growth, particularly if extended trade barriers limit cross-border investment and disrupt supply chains, are also on the cards.
Inflationary pressures within the U.S., with tariffs elevating the price of imported merchandise, can also potentially make the policy course of the Federal Reserve more challenging.
As trade tensions intensify, the performance of region-specific and sectoral ETFs provides a window into how markets are pricing in risk. With the Hang Seng&#8217;s fall serving as a canary in the coal mine, investors might need to rethink their allocations and brace for extended turbulence in the coming months.

Shares of tech companies soared following President Donald Trump's announcement that he will place a 90-day pause on tariffs for countries that have not retaliated against U.S. trade measures. Markets rose on the news, driven<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44720006/markets-take-off-as-trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-non-retaliating-nations-slaps-china-with-125-duty"> higher by tech stocks. </a>
The Details: Technology was the top performing sector in the S&amp;P 500 on Wednesday with the Technology SPDR Select Sector Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) gaining 13.43% in the session. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>), the fund's largest holding, rose 10.13% and its second-largest holding, Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), climbed 15.33% in its best one-day performance since 1998.

The sector's top two gainers were both chip stocks, with Microchip Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>), which gained 23.82% in the tech-fueled rally. 
Other notable gainers in the sector include Palantir Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), which rose 19% and NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), which climbed 18.72% in the session. 
Expert Ideas: Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives said that<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/25/04/44721874/trumps-tariff-pause-saves-market-from-edge-of-the-cliff-dan-ives-says-biggest-wild-card-still-remains"> he expects</a> "massive negotiations" to start to pick up and noted China remains the "biggest wild card" for markets.&nbsp;
"For tech stocks, this was much-needed relief and pulls stocks and the market from the edge of the cliff, although China remains the biggest X variable related to Apple and the broader supply chain," Ives said.
Markets <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44720903/nasdaq-100-eyes-strongest-day-since-2008-as-magnificent-seven-add-15-trillion-in-historic-market-rally">shot higher</a> following Trump's announcement, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 posting its best day since January 2001. 
"The market's move upward is violent, and speaks to how badly the market was looking for clarity on this issue," said Chris Brigati, chief investment officer at SWBC.&nbsp;

Shares of companies in the broader technology sector are trading higher after President Trump issued a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China, which is restoring investor confidence.

Wall Street saw a tentative tech rebound early Wednesday, as investors begin to shrug off escalating U.S.-China trade tensions following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">a steep market selloff.</a>
After the Trump administration announced a dramatic hike in tariffs on Chinese goods to 104% starting Wednesday, Beijing retaliated with an 84% tariff on American products. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the aggressive trade stance, claiming the impact would ultimately backfire on China.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social, writing, &#8220;BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!&#8221; 
He encouraged investors by stating, &#8220;this is a great time to buy, DJT,&#8221; likely referring to Trump Media &amp; Technology Group Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>), rather than the Dow Jones Transportation Index, which has dropped 18% since the tariff news broke.
Yet, broader risk sentiment remains subdued, with investors awaiting either a softer tone from the White House or a signal from the Federal Reserve—though both hopes appear to be fading.
By mid-morning in New York, tech stocks staged a rebound, lifting the Nasdaq 100 by 0.9%. Yet, the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remained flat, while the Russell 2000 continued to underperform.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasuries were failing to provide their traditional safe-haven support amid heightened uncertainty and volatility.
The 10-year Treasury yield surged 10 basis points to 4.40%, triggering a sharp selloff in medium- and long-dated bonds. The popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 1.8%, extending its three-day slide to 6.6%—its worst performance since March 2020.
Gold prices, on the other hand, soared over 3% to $3,075 per ounce, on track for their strongest daily gain since October 2023.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also advanced, rising 1.4% to $77,289.
