<p>A strong May for U.S. equities is closing on a sour note, after President<strong> Donald Trump</strong> accused China of "totally" breaching a tariff agreement, raising new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/cannabis/25/05/45693219/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-slows-but-trumps-china-accusation-flips-market-mood">fears over trade disputes.</a></p>
<p>The White House is reportedly planning broader tech sanctions against China, with a proposed rule targeting companies majority-owned by already-sanctioned firms. According to people familiar with the matter, these firms would face new licensing conditions from the U.S. government, heightening pressure on Beijing. </p>
<p>Friday&#8217;s economic reports offered mixed signals. Although inflation showed signs of cooling, consumers pulled back on monthly spending, signaling weakening demand. Personal spending growth slowed to 0.2% in April, a sharp deceleration from 0.7% in March.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Main Street is sending warning signals, as consumer sentiment remained deeply depressed, holding at a three-year low, according to the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/05/45697983/consumer-sentiment-stuck-at-3-year-lows-as-inflation-fears-hit-44-year-high"> University of Michigan's final May reading.</a> Moreover, year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.5%, the highest since 1981.</p>
<p><strong>Nvidia Corp</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) was the worst performer among the mega-cap names, sliding 4% and fully erasing the gains it had notched following Wednesday&#8217;s stronger-than-expected earnings release.</p>
<p>The broader market mirrored the decline. The S&amp;P 500 fell 1% to 5,858 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 1.3% to 21,100—both marking their lowest levels of the week.</p>
<p>Only defensive sectors such as consumer staples and utilities managed to stay above water, as investors rotated into perceived safe havens amid geopolitical and economic unease.</p>
<p>Crude oil prices declined 1.5% to $60 a barrel amid speculation that OPEC+ could consider a production hike larger than the 410,000 barrels-per-day increase already planned. The group is set to meet Saturday.</p>
<p>Gold, often seen as a haven during market stress, failed to gain traction and dropped 0.9% to trade below $3,300 per ounce.</p>
<p>Cryptocurrency markets also faced headwinds. <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) sank below $105,000, hitting its lowest level since May 20.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For May 30, 2025

<p>Wall Street hovered slightly higher by midday Thursday, giving up a chunk of strong overnight gains in futures markets that were triggered by a federal court ruling suspending a large portion <strong><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45672421/tariffs-blocked-by-court-but-goldman-sachs-says-trump-could-reimpose-them-within-days">of President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs.</a></strong></p>
<p><strong>Nvidia Corp</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) led the market after reporting a better-than-feared quarter. The artificial intelligence leader showed resilience in the face of export restrictions. Shares rose 4.3%, ranking as the second-best performer on the S&amp;P 500 and climbing to their highest level in more than three months.</p>

<p>First-quarter U.S. gross domestic product shrank 0.2%, slightly improving from the initial 0.3% estimate. Still, it marked a sharp slowdown compared to the 2.4% growth in the last quarter of 2024, reflecting slower consumer spending and higher imports ahead of the tariffs impact.</p>
<p>More concerning was the labor market. Initial jobless claims for the week ending May 24 jumped to 240,000, exceeding expectations and reaching their highest level in nearly four months. Continuing claims also rose to levels last seen in November 2021, indicating potential softening in employment trends.</p>
<p>The U.S. dollar pulled back, nearly wiping out gains from the prior two sessions as traders reassessed the outlook for interest rates. Meanwhile, Treasury yields dropped, with the 30-year note falling to 4.92% and the 10-year yield easing to 4.42%.</p>
<p>Federal Reserve Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong> met with Trump at the White House, the Fed confirmed.</p>
<p>The meeting focused on recent economic developments, including inflation, employment and growth. Powell reiterated that the Fed&#8217;s policy path would remain dependent on incoming data but refrained from commenting on future rate decisions.</p>
<p>Gold climbed 1.1% to $3,320 per ounce, buoyed by lower yields and dollar weakness. Meanwhile, <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell below $107,000, giving up recent gains as risk appetite moderated in crypto markets.</p>

<p>Wall Street stumbled midday Friday, shaken by a fresh wave of trade war fears after President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> proposed aggressive new tariffs on <strong>Apple Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45585283/trump-tariff-threat-hits-europe-stocks-sink-as-50-duties-loom">and European imports.</a></p>
<p>In a post on Truth Social, Trump threatened a 25% import duty on Apple Inc. if the tech giant doesn't repatriate its manufacturing to the United States. He also floated a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union, escalating concerns of a renewed transatlantic trade war.</p>
<p>Shares of <strong>Apple Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NYSE">AAPL</a>) dropped 2.6% in response. The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.8% to fall below the key 5,800 mark, on track to close the week lower. </p>
<p>Growth-oriented sectors like technology and consumer discretionary bore the brunt of the selling, while traditionally defensive sectors such as utilities and consumer staples remained in the green.</p>
<p>Volatility spiked as investors turned risk-averse. The CBOE Volatility Index, known as the VIX, climbed 8%, reflecting growing market anxiety. <strong>Bitcoin </strong>(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) wasn&#8217;t spared from the risk-off sentiment, shedding over 2% to trade around $108,700. </p>
<p>Treasury yields edged down to 5.02%, pushing the <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) 0.3% higher as investors sought safer assets.</p>
<p>Gold prices surged 2.1% to $3,362 per ounce, boosted by safe-haven demand and a weakening U.S. dollar. The U.S. dollar index is down 1.8% this week, on pace to break a four-week winning streak.</p>

Stocks, Bitcoin Fall On Trump's Tariff Threats, Gold Rallies: What's Driving Markets Friday?

<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> has sparked fear again of an all-out trade war, causing shockwaves in the stock market and leaving investors in the dark. In a post on Truth Social, Trump directly targeted tech giant <strong>Apple </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), threatening a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45584696/trump-threatens-tim-cook-to-manufacture-iphones-in-the-us-or-face-at-least-25-tariffs">25% tariff on iPhones produced outside America</a>. Not resting there, he threatened a sweeping<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45585283/trump-tariff-threat-hits-europe-stocks-sink-as-50-duties-loom"> 50% tariff on all imports from the European Union</a> beginning June 1.</p>
<p>Although it is uncertain if Trump can unilaterally impose company-specific tariffs, the markets didn&#8217;t wait for answers. Apple stocks fell almost 3% on Friday trading, and investors are now left wondering how to rebalance their portfolios if protectionism returns.</p>

The <strong>Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) holds more than 12.5% in Apple, and the <strong>Vanguard Information Technology ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VGT#NYSE">VGT</a>) and <strong>Invesco QQQ Trust</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) also hold 17.2% and 7.7% respectively.</p>
<p>Investors seeking to trim their exposure to Apple-focused funds could look to diversified global tech ETFs or equal-weight rivals that soften concentration risk. The <strong>iShares Global Tech ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IXN#NYSE">IXN</a>) can be a good choice. Despite having significant exposure to Apple, the fund dedicates around 20% of its portfolio to international tech stocks.</p>
<p><strong>Retail Rout? ETFs Exposed to Walmart and Amazon</strong></p>
<p>Retailing behemoths <strong>Walmart </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) and <strong>Amazon </strong>are also in Trump&#8217;s sights. Leading And Lagging Sectors For May 16, 2025

<p><strong>Palantir Technologies Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) shares are trading slightly lower Thursday at $128.43 as of the time of writing, but remain near record highs after a nearly 500% <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45442127/palantir-soars-500-in-a-year-while-unitedhealth-tanks-40-tech-leaves-healthcare-in-the-dust]\">rally over the past year</a>.</p>
<p><strong>What To Know: </strong>The stock is up more than 32% in the last month alone, significantly outperforming broader indexes like the S&amp;P 500, which gained around 9% over the same period, and even broader technology funds, like the <strong>SPDR Select Technology ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), which gained approximately 17%.</p>
<p>The move has been driven by strong investor demand for AI-related stocks and Palantir's position as a key player in government and enterprise analytics. The company reported $1.3 billion in free cash flow last year and has continued to secure new contracts in both public and private sectors, fueling significant revenue growth in recent years. The company&#8217;s current market cap stands at around $300 billion.</p>
<p>Palantir reported results for the first quarter last week, beating estimates on the top and bottom lines for the seventh consecutive quarter. </p>
<p>Total revenue was up 39% year-over-year as U.S. revenue grew 55% year-over-year to $628 million. U.S. Commercial revenue grew 71% year-over-year to $255 million and U.S. Government revenue climbed 45% year-over-year to $373 million.</p>
<p>Palantir&#8217;s customer count grew 39% year-over-year and 8% on a quarter-over-quarter basis. The company closed out the quarter with $5.4 billion of cash, cash equivalents and short-term U.S. treasury securities.</p>
<p>Palantir guided for second-quarter revenue in the range of $934 million to $938 million versus estimates of $899.12 million. The company also raised its full-year guidance as CEO <strong>Alex Karp</strong> highlighted a &#8220;tectonic shift&#8221; in the adoption of the company&#8217;s software.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are delivering the operating system for the modern enterprise in the era of AI,&#8221; Karp said.</p>
<p>Despite a slight pullback on Thursday, the stock continues to reflect investor confidence in the company's AI-driven growth strategy, hitting new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45383727/palantir-stock-hits-new-all-time-high-on-strong-earnings-macro-tailwinds">all-time highs</a> earlier this week.</p>
