<p>The Hang Seng Index briefly crossed into bear market territory at one point on Wednesday, losing over 20% from its recent high following the U.S.&#8217;s escalation of tariffs on Chinese imports. </p>
<p>Although the index pared some of the losses on Thursday with 2.1% gains after President Donald Trump decided on a 90-day pause, the shockwaves are being felt across a variety of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">U.S.-listed ETFs</a>, focusing investor attention on trade-sensitive assets.</p>

<p>Direct exposure to Hong Kong has taken a tangible dent. The <strong>iShares MSCI Hong Kong ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWH#NYSE">EWH</a>), which tends to follow closely the performance of the Hang Seng, has tracked the index&#8217;s sharp depreciation over recent weeks. The fund has declined 12.26% in the past month. The ETF&#8217;s decline is reflective of investor disappointment in the region&#8217;s prospects for growth, as well as general concern regarding the build-up of geopolitical tensions.</p>
<p>But the effect extends well beyond Hong Kong-centric funds. A number of ETF categories with indirect exposure to China or global trade patterns are exhibiting signs of strain:</p>

<p>The <strong>Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NASDAQ">XLI</a>) declined 2.4% to $123.71 Thursday morning, giving back part of its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44720006/markets-take-off-as-trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-non-retaliating-nations-slaps-china-with-125-duty">dramatic gains</a> from the prior session, as investors moved to lock in profits despite a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">surprisingly soft inflation report</a> that reinforced Wednesday's bullish macro shift.</p>
<p><strong>What To Know:</strong> After surging more than 9% on news of <strong>President Donald Trump's</strong> 90-day pause on tariffs for non-retaliatory nations, XLI was down nearly 2% by mid-morning, reflecting broader market weakness and cautious repositioning.</p>
<p>The retreat comes even as fresh data from the <strong>Bureau of Labor Statistics</strong> showed inflation <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">cooling more sharply</a> than expected in March. Headline CPI fell to 2.4% year-over-year, the lowest since September, while core inflation eased to 2.8%, a level not seen in four years. Monthly inflation contracted by 0.1% — the weakest print since May 2020 — helped by a 6.3% drop in gasoline prices.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Sparks Optimism With Trade Talk Blitz</h3>
<p>The catalyst behind the rally was a lengthy post on Truth Social by Trump, in which he described a "great call" with South Korea's acting president. </p>
<p>The president said South Korea is sending a "top team" to the U.S. for negotiations, calling the process &#8220;one-stop shopping&#8221; for trade and military agreements.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/08/asia/south-korea-acting-president-han-interview-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> interview, South Korea&#8217;s acting president confirmed the country would not align with China and Japan to counter U.S. tariffs. </p>
<p>Seoul faces 25% tariffs under Trump's global tariff rollout. Instead, it aims to strike a bilateral agreement with the U.S. to avoid a blow to its export-driven economy.</p>
<p>Trump also hinted at more openness in trade negotiations with China after threatening Monday to impose a 50% tariff on top of the 54% already levied.</p>
<p>&#8220;China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don&#8217;t know how to get it started,&#8221; Trump wrote.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are waiting for their [China's] call. It will happen!&#8221; he added, suggesting renewed momentum on U.S.-China trade talks.</p>
<p>Senior White House economic adviser <strong>Kevin Hassett</strong> echoed the optimism, telling Fox News that the Trump administration is focusing on countries with "large trade deficits" with the U.S. He emphasized that "fair and reciprocal trade" remains the administration&#8217;s goal.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mega-cap stocks (S&amp;P 100): Top 7 performers</h3>

<p>BlackRock CEO Larry Fink pushed back on the idea that Wall Street and Main Street are disconnected when he spoke to the Economic Club of New York on Monday.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&#8220;The reality is 62% of Americans now invest in equities — the market impact is impacting Main Street,&#8221; Fink said, per Reuters.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The tariffs and the resulting economic turmoil are "going to freeze more and more consumption, I think we&#8217;re going to start seeing that really quickly,&#8221; he added.&nbsp;</p>
