On March 27, 1980, the price of silver collapsed by 33% in a single day after the Hunt brothers&rsquo; plan to corner the global silver market failed.
<h3>Where The Market Was</h3>
The Dow finished the day at 759.98. The S&amp;P 500 finished at 98.22. Today, the Dow is trading at 32,376.48 and the S&amp;P 500 is trading at 3,978.24.
What Else Was Going On In The World?
In 1980, Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed in New York, and Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington, killing 57 people. The average annual income in the U.S. was $19,500.
<h3>Silver Crash</h3>
Starting in 1979, Nelson and William Hunt, two of the world&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.begintoinvest.com/march-27/">wealthiest men</a>, had been buying up every ounce of silver they could get their hands on in an effort to gain control of the global silver market. The plan was to launch a private currency, not unlike bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, except the Hunts&rsquo; currency would be backed by physical silver.
Prior to 1971, every U.S. dollar could be redeemed for its value in gold, but the U.S. went off the gold standard in 1971. The Hunt brothers wanted to create their own rival to the U.S. dollar that was backed by silver, an appealing idea for investors who were seeing double-digit depreciation in the value of the dollar throughout the 1970s due to inflation.
The Hunt brothers eventually acquired roughly half the global supply of silver, but the surge in silver prices they created resulted in a flood of new supply to the market. When the price of silver started to drop, the Hunts were forced to liquidate their holdings, and the entire plan collapsed along with the price of silver.
On March 27, 1980, silver lost a third of its value in a single day, plummeting from $16.25/oz to $10.85/oz.

Experts have increased their price predictions for gold as the Federal Reserve is widely anticipated to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/23/01/30537986/why-el-erian-is-part-of-very-small-camp-against-fed-slowing-down-rate-hike-to-25-bp">slow down the pace of its rate hike soon.</a>

Silver Prices Fall To 2-Year Low As Demand From Top Consumer China Falls — US Recession Fears Add To Woes

Silver stocks such as First Majestic Silver Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ag#NYSE">AG</a>) are shining amid speculation that the Reddit-fueled frenzy will extend to the precious metal and companies associated with it.
What Happened: First Majestic shares closed 21.56% higher at $16.86 and gained 12.69% in the after-hours session on Thursday. The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>), an ETF that tracks silver closed 5.55% higher at $24.72.

Spot silver traded 0.71% lower at $26.227, while March silver futures were up 1.38% at $26.28 at press time.&nbsp;
On Thursday, a WallStreetBets post claimed that banks are &ldquo;manipulating gold and silver to cover real inflation.&rdquo; The post went on to say that the inflation-adjusted price of silver should be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/01/19362380/top-10-stocks-wallstreetbets-users-are-talking-about-today" style="text-decoration-line:none">$1,000 and not $25</a>.
&ldquo;$AG is essentially $GME for Silver, highest short float in the sector, nice leverage to silver, and just broke out above 10 year resistance too,&rdquo; said another post on the Reddit investor forum.
Other silver stocks that have seen a surge include Hecla Mining Company (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hl#NYSE">HL</a>), which closed 16.84% higher and gained 3.2% in the after-hours session, and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fsm#NYSE">FSM</a>), which closed 13.73% higher at $7.62 and rose 7.09% to $8.16 in the after-hours trading.
Why It Matters: Investor Chris Camillo said on Benzinga&rsquo;s Short Squeeze <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKd_pGq7FwE">videocast</a> that he owns a $500,000 position in First Majestic and also owns iShare Silver Trust.&nbsp;
The Reddit investors are clamoring for vengeance against the likes of JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jpm#NYSE">JPM</a>), which they allege have manipulated the silver market.&nbsp;
If the investors on the forum are successful in moving silver prices, ETFs associated with silver-like ProShares Ultra Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/agq#NYSE">AGQ</a>), and Aberdeen Standard Silver Shares ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/21/01/19360995/some-redditors-have-silver-etfs-in-their-sights" style="text-decoration-line:none">could see gains</a>.&nbsp;
AGQ closed 11.42% higher on Thursday, while SIVR saw gains of 5.46%.

How WallStreetBets Is Fueling A Rally In Silver Stocks

To say Reddit forum WallStreetBets accumulated infamy and notoriety and more in the span of a few days is an understatement. Just ask market participants holdings short positions in AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amc#NYSE">AMC</a>) and GameStop (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gme#NYSE">GME</a>), just to name a pair.
What Happened: With <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/21/01/19346393/amc-national-beverage-and-8-more-heavily-shorted-stocks-to-watch">heavily shorted stocks</a> and their subsequent squeezes all the rage these days, WSB is drawing a crowd and with a crowd comes ideas &ndash; some credible, some not so much.
Time will tell what comes of this notion, but one Redditor is suggesting <a href="https://priceonomics.com/how-the-hunt-brothers-cornered-the-silver-market/">a Hunt Brothers redux</a>, advocating for going after the silver market.
&ldquo;Silver Bullion Market is one of the most manipulated on earth. Any short squeeze in silver paper shorts would be EPIC,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/l68ill/the_biggest_short_squeeze_in_the_world_slv_silver/">according to a Wednesday WSB post</a>. &ldquo;We know billion banks are manipulating gold and silver to cover real inflation. Both the industrial case and monetary case, debt printing has never been more favorable for the No. 1 inflation hedge Silver.&rdquo;
Why It&#39;s Important: Again, it remains to be seen what comes of this, but if the WSB crowd can affect the price of silver, various exchange-traded funds stand to benefit, namely the iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) and the Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver Shares ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>).
Both of those ETFs are backed by physical holdings of the white metal.

That reference to JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jpm#NYSE">JPM</a>) pertains to the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-05/jpmorgan-s-role-in-metals-spoofing-is-under-u-s-criminal-probe">bank&#39;s alleged manipulation</a> of the silver market.
What&#39;s Next: The Reddit post garnered 2,700 comments with plenty of WSB community advocating for the idea of cornering the silver market. Some like the idea of getting vengeance on JPMorgan for depressing their silver investments.
It&#39;s a big &ldquo;if,&rdquo; but if Redditors are successful in making silver prices appreciate in dramatic fashion, some ETFs could shine, too.
The ProShares Ultra Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/agq#NYSE">AGQ</a>) comes to mind. That ETF looks to deliver double the daily performance of the Bloomberg Silver Subindex.
Why not a leveraged silver ETF? After all, what&#39;s market participation in 2021 unless one is making money in rapid fashion?

Some Redditors Have Silver ETFs In Their Sights

The iShares Silver Trust (NYSEARCA: SLV), the largest ETF in the silver category, is higher by 14.31% over the past month.
That&#39;s an impressive move &mdash;&nbsp;one that proves silver is finally entering a limelight in a year largely commanded&nbsp;by gold. Some analysts are forecasting more upside for the metal.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The mining and materials equity team at RBC Capital Markets has raised its silver price forecasts by 16% in 2020, 17% in 2021 and 14% in 2022,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.mining.com/rbc-hikes-silver-price-forecasts/">reports </a><a href="https://www.mining.com/rbc-hikes-silver-price-forecasts/">Northern Miner</a>.
&ldquo;RBC now forecasts silver prices will average $17.76 per oz. this year, $18.75 per oz. next year, and $18.50 per oz. in 2021.&rdquo;
Here a few silver ETFs that could deliver more near-term upside.
Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver Shares ETF (SIVR): The Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver Shares ETF (NYSEARCA: SIVR) does what the aforementioned SLV does, which is provided exposure to physical silver.
SIVR is the smaller of the two funds, but it&#39;s not &ldquo;small&rdquo; &mdash;&nbsp;it <a href="https://etfdb.com/etfs/commodity/silver/">has $556.14 million</a> in assets under management.
While these two ETFs deliver the same exposure, the pair don&#39;t offer the same returns for a very simple reason: SIVR&#39;s annual fee of 0.3%, or $30 on a $10,000 investment, is 20 basis points less than the fee found on the iShares product. So for long-term investors, SIVR is the way to go.
Global X Silver Miners ETF (SIL):&nbsp;As is often the case with gold, silver miners participate in the underlying metal&#39;s price gyrations. That&#39;s good news right now for the Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSEARCA: SIL).
The $815.59-million SIL tracks the Solactive Global Silver Miners Total Return Index. Investors should note that there&#39;s not an expansive universe of large-cap silver miners. The weighted average market value of SIL&#39;s components is <a href="https://www.globalxetfs.com/funds/sil/">just over $8 billion</a>, putting the ETF in mid-cap territory.
Market cap aside, SIL broke out yesterday, jumping 4.86% on above-average volume, extending its one-month gain to almost 31%.
ETFMG Prime Junior Silver Miners ETF (SILJ):&nbsp;One similarity among gold and silver miners is that both have a robust universe&nbsp;of small-cap constituents. Another similarity is that junior silver miners, like their gold counterparts, can overshoot the metal&#39;s price action in either direction.
The ETFMG Prime Junior Silver Miners ETF (NYSEARCA: SILJ) is the dean of small-cap silver ETFs, and it&#39;s in rally mode.
On Monday, SILJ surged 6.57% on volume that was nearly triple the daily average, extending its gain over the past month to 40%.

3 Scorching Hot Silver ETFs

Some commodities are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/20/06/16198498/3-etfs-getting-absolutely-crushed-this-year">getting absolutely wrecked</a> this year, but that&#39;s not the case with gold. When gold glitters, it has a tendency to overshadow other precious metals, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/20/06/16198498/3-etfs-getting-absolutely-crushed-this-year">as it&#39;s doing this year</a>.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
The VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA: GDXJ), one of the largest exchange traded funds in this category, is sporting a second-quarter gain of almost 22%. Given the ETF&#39;s name, it would be reasonable to assume that gold is power this ETF higher, but there&#39;s more to the story.
As noted above, gold overshadows silver, but the Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver Shares ETF (NYSEARCA: SIVR) is higher by more than 16% over the past month and that&#39;s helping GDXJ.
<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>
GDXJ&#39;s underlying index tracks &ldquo;the overall performance of small-capitalization companies that are involved primarily in the mining for gold and/or silver,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.vaneck.com/etf/equity/gdxj/overview/">according to VanEck.</a>
The emphasis is on silver, as GDXJ&#39;s silver miners exposure is proving useful.
&ldquo;Silver performance has lagged gold for a number of years, driving the gold/silver ratio to an all-time high of 123 in March,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.vaneck.com/blogs/gold-investing/a-gold-star-for-the-other-junior-class/">VanEck said in a recent note</a>.
&ldquo;Silver mounted a comeback in May, gaining 18.3%, amid some of the strongest inflows into silver bullion exchange-traded funds since their inception. Silver might see further gains as it is still underperforming gold by 14% this year and the gold/silver ratio remains at 97, far above the five-year average of 80.&rdquo;
Many of GDXJ&#39;s top 10 holdings, which combine for 45.45% of the fund&#39;s roster, produce silver in addition to gold and some of the fund&#39;s holdings are dedicated silver miners.
<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>
Obviously, GDXJ is a small-cap fund, and as is the case with small caps, it&#39;s been lagging its large-cap counterparts.
If small-cap stocks are showing plenty of signs of life,&nbsp;that could facilitate a another move higher in GDXJ.
&ldquo;In a bull market, large-cap companies typically move first, followed by stronger performance by mid-tiers and juniors as the market advances,&rdquo; according to VanEck.
&ldquo;The lag in performance between the large and smaller companies is normally measured in weeks.&nbsp; However, after a year we are still waiting for the smaller companies to outperform. Since gold broke out on June 20, 2019, the GDM, which is heavily weighted majors (66% as of the end of May), has gained 45.6%. The MVGDXJ, with an 87% combined weight in mid-tiers and juniors, has failed to outperform, gaining 44.4% over the same period. Investor sentiment has remained low so far in this cycle. We believe this is finally beginning to change, as shown by the 7.0% outperformance of MVGDXJ in May.&rdquo;

Gold Isn't The Only Reason This Miners ETF Is Soaring

Though it is still in the doldrums relative to other currency exchange-traded funds, the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund 
 (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/uup#NYSE">UUP</a>) has perked up in recent sessions. The dollar&#39;s awakening, albeit modest, is pressuring commodities and the related ETFs, including silver funds.
The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) and the ETFS Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>), both of which are backed by physical holdings of silver, each slid 2.4 percent Tuesday. UUP gained almost half a percent as investors turned to safer assets.
&ldquo;Volatility in the entire Precious Metals space has been the case for the past several sessions and today&rsquo;s gap higher in the U.S. Dollar threatens to take metals prices even lower should this strength hold,&rdquo; said <a href="http://streetonefinancial.com/">Street One Financial</a> Vice President Paul Weisbruch in a note out Tuesday.&nbsp;
<h3>Quick Reversal</h3>
Silver&#39;s retreat on Tuesday comes just a few days after the white metal was bid higher amid U.S. geopolitical tensions with North Korea. SLV and SIVR are now up about 4.2 percent year to date, less than half the gains posted by the equivalent gold ETFs.
Faltering silver prices could create opportunity in leveraged ETFs, such as the ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>) and the VelocityShares 3X Inverse Silver ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dslv#NYSE">DSLV</a>).
&ldquo;The recent volatility in these segments, especially in Silver prices themselves should attract more traders to the space not only of SLV which is by far the largest fund in the space at $5.7 billion in AUM, but in other offerings as well,&rdquo; said Weisbruch. &ldquo;Smaller funds that are currently on our radar that often have appeal to traders and portfolio managers looking to aggressively hedge portfolios or make short term directional moves include DSLV and ZSL.&rdquo;
<h3>Miners, Too</h3>
If silver prices remain stuck in a rut, investors should consider the consequences for mining ETFs. For example, the Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sil#NYSE">SIL</a>) lost more than 2 percent Tuesday and is clinging to a year-to-date gain of a comparable amount.
Prolonged weakness in silver miners could spell momentum for the Direxion Daily Silver Miners Index 2X Bear Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dull#NYSE">DULL</a>). DULL, which turns 1 year old next month, looks to deliver double the daily inverse performance of the Solactive Global Silver Miners Index.

Silver ETFs Slide As Dollar Bounces

Precious metals were the best-performing commodities of the first quarter, and some analysts believe the volatile nature of President Donald Trump&rsquo;s first months in office played a big part.
A <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4059564-precious-metals-q1-2017-review-outlook-q2">composite</a> of the active month futures prices of the four exchange-traded precious metals moved higher by an average of 11.45 percent in the first quarter.
&ldquo;Love him or hate him, there&#39;s one thing that President Donald Trump has done since he took over the White House, and that&#39;s create a lot more uncertainty around the world,&rdquo; wrote stock picker Michael Lombardi in <a href="https://www.lombardiletter.com/greatest-president-ever-precious-metal-prices/10277/">&ldquo;The Lombardi Letter.&rdquo;</a> &ldquo;And this is great for precious metal prices.&rdquo;
Lombardi cited Trump&rsquo;s bombings of Syria and Afghanistan and his rhetoric about sending an aircraft carrier fleet toward North Korea &mdash; something the Pentagon later recanted &mdash; as reasons why investors were seeking out the traditional, post-apocalyptic safe havens of gold and silver.
&ldquo;Since the U.S. (fired) Tomahawk missiles on Syria, gold prices have made an almost-vertical move to the upside,&rdquo; he said.
<h3>Scary Silver Lining</h3>
Silver was up more than 13 percent year-to-date, and not just as a sanctuary move. Lombardi said each Tomahawk missile contains 15 kilograms of silver wires and batteries, meaning that the 59 fired on Syria contained 31,200 ounces of the metal.
&ldquo;Yes, silver is a precious metal that investors often flock to (alongside gold) in times of uncertainty,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But silver is also used in the aerospace and defense sectors, so a lot more silver could be needed if the U.S. goes to war again.&rdquo;
Benchmark New York gold futures edged up to a five-month high on Tuesday and closed at $1,291.7 per troy ounce, the <a href="http://asia.nikkei.com/Markets/Commodities/Gold-price-edges-up-to-five-month-high-widens-spread-between-platinum">Nikkei Asian Review</a> said.
<h3>Metals Bump Began With Breixit</h3>
Market analyst Itsuo Toshima told the review that the demand for gold was robust even before the geopolitical tensions of recent weeks. &quot;From Brexit to the Trump administration, a series of unexpected events across the world have been pushing up gold demand among investment funds,&quot; he said.
Silver was trading at $18.13 an ounce after hitting a three-month high of $18.60 on Monday, according the APMEX metals index. Palladium was at $797.80 after reaching its three-month high of $812.50 on March 24. Gold was $1,290.70 after posting its three-month $1,294.90 on Tuesday.
Platinum, a scarcer metal that historically outperforms gold, was at $980 an ounce on Thursday.

Erratic Trump Prompts Investors To Seek Safety In Silver, Gold

E*Trade Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/etfc#NASDAQ">ETFC</a>), one of the largest discount brokers, added to its offering of commission-free exchange-traded funds in significant fashion last week, announcing it has added 47 ETFs from five providers to its commission-free stable since the start of 2017.
<h3>E*Trade Initiative</h3>
Issuers making their debut on E*Trade&#39;s commission-free ETF platform are ETF Securities, Guggenheim Investments, IndexIQ, John Hancock and JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jpm#NYSE">JPM</a>)'s JPMorgan Asset Management.
E*Trade clients can now trade 133 ETFs on a commission-free basis and 4,400 no-transaction-fee mutual funds, <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20170224005360/en/E*TRADE-Expands-Lineup-Funds-47-Commission-Free-ETFs">according to a statement</a>.
Among the well-known ETFs just added to E*Trade&#39;s commission-free roster are the ETFS Gold Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sgol#NYSE">SGOL</a>), Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>) and the Guggenheim S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/rsp#NYSE">RSP</a>).

Two of John Hancock&#39;s broad market smart beta ETFs and nine of the issuer&#39;s smart beta sector ETFs are available to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/10/5914739/examining-the-helpfulness-of-hancocks-etfs">E*Trade clients commission-free</a>.
Other new additions to the E*Trade commission-free ETF lineup include the JPMorgan Diversified Return U.S. Mid Cap Equity ETF (NYSE: JPME) and the JPMorgan Diversified Return Emerging Markets Equity ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/jpem#NYSE">JPEM</a>).

The markets are climbing to new heights, and commodities are hanging on for the ride. Gold and silver futures are have soared over the past year. Brexit included, KODEX Gold Futures(H) (KRX: 132030) are trading up a little over 4 percent over the past month, whereas KODEX Silver Futures(H) (KRX: 144600) are trading up around 17 percent over the past month.
Furthermore, other gold and silver stocks and ETFs are likewise experiencing an upward trend:

Abraham Trading Company&#39;s Salem Abraham joined Wednesday&#39;s PreMarket Prep to give his bullish outlook for the gold and silver markets.
Abraham noted that gold and silver are two things on which his company is most confident. &quot;Gold and silver are our most exciting positions. We&#39;ve been long gold and silver for a couple months now, and as they&#39;ve flowed back and forth but they continue to run up this year,&quot; he said. &quot;We think with the strength they&#39;ve shown what you find is a market that can defy gravity.&quot;

Abraham added that his models have been quite bullish on the two commodities as well. &quot;We have models from one-week outlook out to up to four months, and what&#39;s interesting to me as a technical trader is that all those (models) agree to gold and silver, and that&#39;s pretty rare,&quot; he said. &quot;From a technical perspective you have a lot of opinions that say, &lsquo;Hey these markets are going higher.&#39;&quot;
Abraham further commented that gold and silver may be the safest plays in an increasingly risky market. &quot;I think in a market environment where there&#39;s a global pushback it seems like, prudent fiscal policies across the globe from a political standpoint, there&#39;s a lot of uncertainty,&quot; he said. &quot;When you&#39;ve got a currency that basically interest rates are so low to negative &mdash; which is crazy &mdash; it&#39;s as crazy as it gets for paper money. I think that&#39;s the real attraction of gold and silver right now.&quot;
Major markets are soaring, and Salem Abraham has a very positive position on where gold and futures are headed in the future.

'The Sky Is The Limit' For Gold And Silver

As gold hit a two-year high on the back of the Brexit outcome, there is huge potential for silver as well.
PureFunds ETFs co-founder and CEO Andrew Chanin told CNBC that silver may be the better metal play as uncertainty to drive silver demand.
Chanin said two-thirds of silver produced are coming from industrial demand and noted that silver price is two-thirds off all-time highs.

Silver Will Become Hot Commodity Amid Market Uncertainty

With year-to-date losses of just under 30 percent, the ETFS Physical Platinum Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pplt#NYSE">PPLT</a>) and the ETFS Physical Palladium Shares (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pall#NYSE">PALL</a>) are easily the worst performers among the major precious metals exchange-traded funds.
The SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/gld#NYSE">GLD</a>) is down just 10.6 percent, while the iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/slv#NYSE">SLV</a>) looks good compared to PALL and PPLT with a year-to-date loss of 12.6 percent. Shrewd commodities and ETF investors know better than to be fooled by silver.

Flows data have proven to be accurate harbingers of silver&#39;s recent fate, and traders are getting it right with inverse, leveraged silver ETFs&mdash; something that is not always the case with<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/11/5969460/rate-hike-odds-shine-a-light-on-leveraged-gold-miners-etfs"> leveraged gold miners ETFs</a>.
 SLV and rival Silver Trust (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/sivr#NYSE">SIVR</a>) have been losing assets as investors, concerned about the effects of higher interest rates on commodities, have continued departing precious metals ETFs.
<h3>The Commodities Concern</h3>
&ldquo;Since topping out in August 2011, commodity ETP assets have been in decline thanks to negative returns and sharp redemptions. Investors have yanked more than $22 billion out of commodity ETPs over this period,&rdquo; according to <a href="http://news.morningstar.com/articlenet/article.aspx?id=716810">Morningstar</a>.
However, what long-term investors should concern themselves with is long-term, risk-adjusted returns &ndash; and that outlook is bleak for commodities because, as Morningstar&#39;s data indicate, portfolios including commodities result in lower Sharpe Ratios than traditional 60 percent equity/40 percent fixed income portfolios.
Translation: These are the days for risk-tolerant traders to consider inverse silver exchange-traded products, including the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/zsl#NYSE">ZSL</a>) and the Credit Suisse AG - VelocityShares 3x Inverse Silver ETN (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dslv#NYSE">DSLV</a>).
<h3>Inverse Silver</h3>
&ldquo;This morning we see SLV barely trading above another 2015 low registered just yesterday in the product, and 2015 in general has been brutal for the metal and related precious metals, since none of them trade in a vacuum. Even though it has performed well this year being on the bearish side of Silver prices, ZSL only has $55 million in assets under management and has seen modest outflows (-$12 million) year-to-date in spite of its timeliness,&rdquo; said <a href="http://streetonefinancial.com/">Street One Financial</a> Paul Weisbruch in a note out Tuesday. 
DSLV attempts to deliver triple the daily inverse returns of the S&amp;P GSCI Silver Index Excess Return while ZSL, the ProShares product, seeks to deliver double the daily inverse returns of silver prices at the London fixing.
 ZSL is up nearly 13 percent over the past three months while DSLV is higher by 16.7 percent over that period.
