Broadcom Debuts VeloSky To Accelerate 5G And Satellite Adoption

Broadcom Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) $69 billion acquisition of VMware in 2023 marked a significant shift in the tech industry.
In the year following the deal, Broadcom drastically reduced the number of VMware products from thousands to just five, responding to customer feedback that the original plan for only four bundles was too limiting, Financial Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/retail-consumer" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>, citing an interview with Broadcom CEO Hock Tan.
Tan explained that simplifying VMware&#8217;s offerings made the product &#8220;easier&#8221; to use, aligning with their goal of streamlining and boosting efficiency.
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), Tan sees VMware as a key alternative for companies looking to avoid handing over their data to large US cloud providers, especially in Europe.
VMware&#8217;s virtualisation system&nbsp;allows businesses to manage their data centers more efficiently, reducing hardware costs while improving resilience and security.

Despite estimates that 20% of VMware customers would leave, Tan stated that churn had not significantly increased.
He described the complaints as coming from a "short-sighted customers.&#8221; Tan argued that these customers overlooked the value of long-term cost amortization.
Earlier this month, the company announced the availability of the Brocade G710 24-port 64G switch,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/01/43008511/broadcoms-latest-san-switch-offers-scalable-energy-efficient-solution-for-growing-storage-demands" rel="noreferrer noopener"> a&nbsp;top-of-rack SAN switch.</a>
Brocade Gen 7 Fibre Channel combines cyber-resilient and autonomous SAN technology into this cost-effective platform that seamlessly integrates into rack-based storage solutions, the company said.
The Brocade G710 switch extends the 64G SAN portfolio, which includes fixed port switches, modular directors, extension switches, and management software.

Broadcom Chief Simplifies VMware's Product Line After $69 Billion Acquisition: Report

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>)&nbsp;has commenced the production of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/semiconductors" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced 4-nm chips</a> for U.S. customers in Arizona, Reuters cites Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
In November, the contract chipmaker secured a $6.6 billion grant from Commerce Ministry for its U.S. facility in Phoenix, Arizona, covering <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/media/24/12/42514266/taiwan-semiconductor-unveils-20-billion-arizona-chip-fab-apple-named-key-customer" rel="noreferrer noopener">3.5 million square feet</a> on a 1,100-acre site. The government also promised up to $5 billion in affordable loans.

The company targets 6,000 workers for its three fabs in Arizona.&nbsp;
In April, Taiwan Semiconductor agreed to boost its investment by $25 billion to $65 billion and to add a third Arizona fab by 2030 as the artificial intelligence frenzy is in no hurry to slow down.
The Taiwanese chipmaker will produce the 2-nm technology at its second Arizona fab, which will likely begin production in 2028. It also agreed to use the &#8220;A16&#8221; <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42060003/taiwan-semiconductors-us-subsidy-boosts-a16-tech-production-in-arizona" rel="noreferrer noopener">chip manufacturing technology</a> in Arizona.
Raimondo wants the U.S. to produce 20% of advanced logic chips by 2030, up from 0% before Taiwan Semiconductor began production in Arizona.
International Data Corp&nbsp;expects&nbsp;Taiwan Semiconductor&nbsp;to&nbsp;command a 67%&nbsp;share of the global foundry market in 2025.
Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) is&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/media/24/12/42514266/taiwan-semiconductor-unveils-20-billion-arizona-chip-fab-apple-named-key-customer" rel="noreferrer noopener">weighing the production</a> of the front-end process of Blackwell AI chips at the Arizona plant. Currently, 92% of the most advanced chips are made in Taiwan, prompting Taiwan Semiconductor to ship the Blackwell chips back to Taiwan for packaging.
The chipmaker&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/42907937/taiwan-semiconductor-hits-26-3-billion-q4-revenue-reportedly-ends-powerair-deal-over-huawei-chip-breach-amid-us-sanctions" rel="noreferrer noopener">fourth-quarter revenue</a> amounted to 868.46 billion New Taiwan dollars ($26.3 billion versus a consensus of $26.2 billion), up from $19.62 billion a year ago.
The quarterly revenue is based on &nbsp;2.89 trillion New Taiwan dollars between January and December 2024 and &nbsp;2.03 trillion New Taiwan dollars between January and September 2024.
TSMC expects quarterly revenue of $26.1 billion—$26.9 billion. It could post a profit of 377.95 billion New Taiwan dollars ($11.41 billion) for the quarter, Reuters cites LSEG SmartEstimate versus 238.7 billion New Taiwan dollars a year ago.
The company reported a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/media/24/12/42514266/taiwan-semiconductor-unveils-20-billion-arizona-chip-fab-apple-named-key-customer" rel="noreferrer noopener">third-quarter revenue</a> of $23.50 billion, up 39%, backed by the demand for 3-nm and 5-nm technologies. Needham had flagged Apple Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) contribution to the&nbsp;3-nm performance.
Taiwan Semiconductor stock surged 105% in the last 12 months. Taiwan Semiconductor Begins 4nm Chip Production in Arizona, Eyes $11.4 Billion Q4 Profit

Two of the globe&#8217;s largest chip manufacturers will clash in court this week due to a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/intellectual-property">disagreement over intellectual property</a>.
What Happened: Arm Holdings plc's (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) legal spat with Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>) commenced Monday, Dec. 16, before a federal jury in Delaware, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-16/arm-qualcomm-contract-fight-threatens-to-upend-chip-industry?sref=TBDibEcD">reported</a>.
Recall Qualcomm's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/21/01/19148004/qualcomm-to-buy-startup-nuvia-in-1-4b-deal-what-investors-need-to-know">$1.4 billion acquisition of NUVIA</a>, a chip startup, in 2021. Just two years earlier, Arm granted licenses to NUVIA — assets Qualcomm eventually inherited.
Arm, headquartered in the U.K. and majority-owned by SoftBank Group, claims the Nuvia deal requires renegotiation. It also wants Qualcomm to destroy certain chip designs it received once the deal closed.
Qualcomm, in court documents, insists it has its own license agreements with Arm. &#8220;Qualcomm has licensed and paid for the same intellectual property that NUVIA licensed under its own separate agreements with ARM,&#8221; the statement <a href="https://semianalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/files/71776a9c-ee79-4c5c-947b-f7e98cf40bcc.pdf">reads</a>.

Why It Matters: The case — Arm v. Qualcomm, 22-cv-01146, US District Court, District of Delaware (Wilmington) — will likely see both CEOs, Arm&#8217;s Rene Haas and Qualcomm&#8217;s Cristiano Amon, take the stand.
This isn't the first time an M&amp;A agreement involving these companies sparked legal challenges. Back in 2020, Nvidia attempted to buy Arm for $40 billion, which threw San Diego-based Qualcomm and other tech companies into a panic.
Regulators sank the deal in 2022 when the Federal Trade Commission sued Nvidia to block the merger. Arm also faced substantial regulatory pressure from British authorities.&nbsp;
Fast-forward to today, and Arm is now trying to flex its muscles by pulling Qualcomm's license — worth an estimated $1.5 billion.
And Qualcomm is not known to give up easily. Recall its past licensing tussle with Apple, <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/04/qualcomm-and-apple-agree-to-drop-all-litigation/">settled</a> in April 2019. 
What&#8217;s Next: Analysts predict the companies will eventually settle, probably with Qualcomm paying more to access Arm's tech. 
The proceedings are anticipated to conclude by Friday, Dec. 20.
It&#8217;s worth noting that the chips in question power most mainstream devices, and the legal dispute could have wide-ranging repercussions on the tech industry.

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) launched its 3.5D eXtreme Dimension System in Package (XDSiP) technology, enabling consumer AI customers to develop <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/g42339240/broadcom-delivers-industrys-first-3-5d-f2f-technology-for-ai-xpus" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced accelerators (XPUs)</a>.
Notably, Broadcom introduced the industry's first Face-to-Face (F2F) 3.5D XPU.

Western Digital's third-quarter adjusted EPS of $0.63 was an upside to investor expectations by $0.58, while sales of $3.46 billion were $100 million above investor expectations, the analyst stated.
HDD sales were up 28.2% sequentially and 17.1% year over year to $1.75 billion. Improving nearline sales aided results driven by&nbsp;hyperscale&nbsp;customers. Shipments of 24 TB and 28 TB SMR drives represented 50% of Nearline shipments, he noted.
Driven by higher ASPs, flash sales grew by 2.4% sequentially to $1.71 billion and were up by 30.5% year over year. Miller added that&nbsp;NAND ASPs sequentially increased by 18% on both a like-for-like and blended basis.
Cloud sales were up 43.1% year over year and 27.2% year over year to $1.53 billion, representing 44% of total sales. HDD ASPs increased by $23 sequentially to $145. Miller said the sequential growth&nbsp;was attributed&nbsp;to higher Nearline shipments and better pricing.
Client sales grew by 4.6% year over year to $1.17 billion and by 20.4% sequentially, representing 34% of March quarter sales. An increase in flash ASPs was more than offset by a decline in flash shipments.&nbsp;
Miller said the Y/Y increase&nbsp;was driven&nbsp;by growth in both flash and HDD ASPs and flash bit shipments.
Consumer sales fell 13% sequentially to $0.73 billion but were up 17.2% year over year. Flash and HDD were down by approximately similar rates and in line with seasonality.&nbsp;Miller added that the year-over-year increase&nbsp;was driven&nbsp;by&nbsp;growth in&nbsp;flash bit shipments and ASPs.
March quarter adjusted gross margins were 29.3% versus 15.5% in&nbsp;the&nbsp;December&nbsp;quarter.&nbsp;HDD adjusted&nbsp;gross margins sequentially improved from 24.8% to 31.1%, while&nbsp;Flash adjusted&nbsp;gross margins&nbsp;sequentially&nbsp;improved&nbsp;from 7.9% to 27.4%.&nbsp;

Not All Chipmakers Are Doing Great; STMicroelectronics Lowers Annual Outlook After Q1 Performance

STMicroelectronics N.V.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STM#NYSE">STM</a>) inked a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Centrica plc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPYYY#OTC">CPYYY</a>) unit Centrica Energy Trading A/S to supply renewable energy to its operations in Italy,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/04/g38195924/stmicroelectronics-and-centrica-energy-sign-long-term-agreement-for-the-supply-of-electricity-prod" rel="noreferrer noopener">starting January 2025</a>.&nbsp;
The agreement is based on the sale by Centrica Energy of around 61 GWh of renewable energy per year, produced by a new solar farm in Italy.&nbsp;

As pricing improves in NAND and, to a lesser extent, HDD, coupled with better utilization rates, it could have a sizable tailwind.&nbsp;
Over the next ~6 months, as details of the split and business models are clearer, it will unlock value here and drive the stock higher, as per Daryanani.&nbsp;
Investors underestimate WDC&#8217;s capacity to pay down debt over the next six months before the spin, enabling the HDD business to carry less debt than expected. The analyst added that this could result in a more robust than anticipated capital return program.&nbsp;
