Technology giant NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) could serve as a barometer for market strength and multiple sectors when the company reports second-quarter financial results <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">after market close Wednesday.</a>



Here are the earnings estimates from analysts, what experts are saying ahead of the report and the key items to watch.

Analysts expect Nvidia to report second-quarter revenue of $45.89 billion, up from $30.04 billion in last year's second quarter, according to data <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/register?utm_adType=bzprocontent&amp;utm_campaign=14daytrial&amp;utm_ad=0826">from Benzinga Pro.</a>



The company has beaten analyst estimates for revenue in 11 straight quarters.



The estimated revenue would set a new company record, surpassing the first-quarter total of $44.06 billion.



Analysts expect Nvidia to report second-quarter earnings per share of $1.00, up from 68 cents per share in last year's second quarter.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Experts Are Saying</h2>



Analysts have been raising their price targets on Nvidia stock ahead of the earnings report.



Nvidia stock could move around 7% based on historical reactions, Freedom Capital Markets Chief Market Strategist Jay Woods said in a weekly newsletter.



"Saying this is the most important stock in the world is an understatement. The stock's average move after an earnings release is +/- 7.4%, so just an average move will make an impact on the entire market," Wood <a href="https://dashboard.mailerlite.com/forms/430322/151045652250363569/share">said</a>.



In the newsletter, Woods breaks down the high weighting for Nvidia in top stock market indexes and ETFs.



"Given that it is the largest market capitalized firm in the world with a valuation of $4.34 trillion, it holds the highest weighting of any stock."



In the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), Nvidia is the top holding at 8.0% of assets.



In the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), Nvidia is the top holding at 10.1% of assets.



In the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), Nvidia is the 19th largest holding at 2.4% of assets.



While it has a smaller weighting in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nvidia is one of the rare stocks included in that index, along with the S&amp;P 500, and is a member of the Magnificent 7, which covers some of the most closely watched stock groups.



Woods shares that Nvidia is also a top holding in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMH#NASDAQ">SMH</a>) and the SPDR Technology Select ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) at around 22% and 16% respectively.



"As Nvidia goes, so go most of the semiconductor stocks and AI plays. They are the dominant player in the space and positive forward guidance combined with continued strong demand will likely lift the sector. Any surprising slowdown and the negative impact could be dramatic."



Wedbush analyst Dan Ives <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/08/47323525/dan-ives-predicts-flex-the-muscles-nvidia-earnings-moment-and-gene-munster-bets-on-robotics-boom-amid-q3-guidance-skepticism">expects strong earnings</a> from Nvidia, the company he says is powering AI infrastructure on a global scale.



"The Street continues to estimate the demand curve for the AI Revolution being led by Nvidia," Ives recently tweeted. "This week's earnings will be another flex the muscles moment for Nvidia and the AI Revolution bull thesis."



Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management said investors are too focused on the short-term numbers for Nvidia and missing the future growth.



"For the next two years, we're still early in the AI data center buildout," Munster said.



Munster said physical AI will be the growth engine after data center growth drops, adding that robotics could become the next growth market.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Key Items to Watch</h2>



The earnings and guidance from Nvidia will take center stage on Wednesday, with the stock likely to react immediately to the headline numbers.



Diving deeper into the results and commentary, China is likely to become a significant topic that could impact the movement of the stock. Nvidia has missed out on revenue due to restrictions on exports to China.



With the Trump administration attempting to capture a portion of revenue from exports to China, and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/08/47052177/china-raises-security-red-flags-over-nvidias-h20-chips-as-trump-pushes-for-15-revenue-share-report">China counterattacking with</a> red flags against U.S. chipmakers, the battle over whether Nvidia will experience revenue growth in the Chinese market continues.



The Data Center segment is the company's largest, and the segment saw 73% year-over-year growth in the first quarter, the highest of the four main reporting segments. Revenue for the segment was up only 10% quarter-over-quarter, showing slowing growth for the company.



Investors and analysts will likely look to the year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter percentages to determine the stage of growth Nvidia finds itself in.



Gaming &amp; AI PC and Automotive segment revenue was up 42% year-over-year and up 72% year-over-year respectively in the first quarter. These are other sectors analysts and investors will be watching.

Nvidia stock is up 1.3% to $86.63 on Tuesday versus a 52-week trading range of $86.63 to $184.48. Nvidia stock is up 31.7% year-to-date.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Tuesday that the Trump administration is considering buying ownership stakes in major defense contractors, similar to its recent controversial <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/macro-economic-events/25/08/47327504/us-and-japan-set-to-announce-550-billion-mega-investment-deal-says-howard-lutnick-but-tokyo-reportedly-resists-binding-terms">move to acquire part</a> of chipmaker Intel Corp. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Administration Eyes Defense Contractors</h2>



During an interview on CNBC's&nbsp;Squawk Box, host&nbsp;Andrew Ross Sorkin&nbsp;asked why the government shouldn't take partial ownership of companies like&nbsp;Palantir Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>)&nbsp;or&nbsp;Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>),<a href="https://thehill.com/business/5470771-trump-administration-defense-contractors/"> according </a>to The Hill. 



"There are a lot of businesses that do business with the U.S. government, that benefit by doing business with the U.S. government. Where, again, I guess the question is, where's the line?" Sorkin asked.



Lutnick responded by pointing to defense firms. 



"Oh, there's a monstrous discussion about defense," Lutnick replied. 



"I mean, Lockheed Martin makes 97 percent of their revenue from the U.S. government. They are basically an arm of the U.S. government. They make exquisite munitions, I mean, amazing things that can knock a missile out of the air when it's coming towards you," he added.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">10% Stake In Intel </h2>



After markets closed on Friday, Intel <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/08/47306887/intel-stock-is-trading-higher-monday-whats-going-on">revealed a deal </a>with the Trump administration involving an $8.9 billion investment from the U.S. government to bolster America's technology and manufacturing base.



In exchange, the U.S. government now holds a 9.9% equity stake in Intel.



Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan emphasized the company's leadership in advanced U.S. semiconductor research and manufacturing, stating that Intel remains committed to keeping the most sophisticated technologies domestically produced. 



He credited President Donald Trump's push for strengthening chip production in the U.S. as a driver of unprecedented industry investment critical to both economic growth and national security.



Under the agreement, the government will acquire about 433.3 million Intel shares at $20.47 per share. The stake is structured as a passive holding, meaning the government will not seek board representation and will support the board's recommendations in shareholder votes.



In a company statement, Intel reiterated its commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security, while also expressing eagerness to maintain close cooperation with the administration.

Defense Stocks Rise As Trump Team Considers Buying Into Major Contractors

It is hard to make quantifiable observations without having a strong anchor point. Beneath the surface of a fresh market all-time high, the foundation is looking increasingly shaky. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/market-breadth-indicators">Market breadth</a>, a measure of stocks participating in a rally, has slipped below the level it had in 2008 – a year that holds a special place in all economic textbooks.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Equal-Weight At Lows</h3>



Start with the ratio of the Invesco S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight ETF(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RSP#NYSE">RSP</a>)&nbsp; to the traditional market-cap-weighted index, SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>). It just dropped to 0.292, its lowest point since November 2008. To put that in a recent context, at the 2022 bear market low, the ratio stood about 15% higher.&nbsp;

That kind of imbalance isn't just unusual — it's historically dangerous. Every time market leadership has concentrated to this extreme, it's been a prelude to pain. It has happened in the Dot-com bubble and the Great Recession.&nbsp;



Another statistic should make an investor pause. Only 59% of S&amp;P 500 companies are trading above their 200-day moving average.&nbsp;

This moving average is a general measure of an intermediate trend. Being below 60% means more than 200 stocks in the index are trending downward, even as the benchmark sits at record highs.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Protecting Against Poor Breadth</h3>



This isn't the first time investors have faced an ultra-narrow market, and history doesn't paint a pretty picture. Goldman Sachs crunched the numbers and found that when market concentration reaches extremes like this, the next decade's returns tend to disappoint. High-flying rallies turn into long stretches of mediocrity, or worse.



Protecting investments means turning to diversification &#8211; shifting some allocation into equal-weight ETFs, like the Xtrackers S&amp;P 500 Equal Weight (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPTFF#OTC">CPTFF</a>) or tilting toward value and small caps, which gives exposure outside the mega-cap bubble.



Historically, these plays perform best when concentration finally cracks and leadership rotates. Dynamic strategies, hedges, or simply reducing reliance on passive mega-cap exposure are other options.



However, investors should be careful with blindly piling into small-caps. While mega-cap companies have suffered from "winner's curse," small-caps have become increasingly unprofitable. Around 43% of the Russell 2000 index is earning in the negative territory, compared to around 6% in the S&amp;P, significantly raising the risks of "diworsefication."

The Red Flag That Presaged Dot-Com Crash And The Great Recession Is Back

The Fed may be ready to cut in September, but the bond market? Not exactly throwing a party. Macro strategist Jim Bianco, president of Bianco Research, warned that the bond market—particularly long-dated Treasuries—is sending a clear message: It doesn&#8217;t <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">want these rate cuts.</a>

In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday, Bianco indicated that despite Fed Chair Jerome Powell's dovish pivot at Jackson Hole, where he strongly signaled a shift toward prioritizing labor market stability over inflation, the long end of the yield curve isn&#8217;t cooperating.



The 30-year Treasury yield has barely budged since early August, even after Powell cracked the door wide open to easing.



"For all the talk that the Fed's going to cut in September, the bond market's had a month to think about it—and it's up one basis point," Bianco said.



In other words, the bond market isn't just shrugging off a rate cut—it may be quietly resisting it.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why The Bond Market Isn&#8217;t Cheering</h2>



Bianco's reasoning is clear: the long end of the curve doesn't believe rate cuts are sustainable without fueling more inflation.



While Powell is selling the idea of &#8220;adjusting policy&#8221; due to shifting risks—i.e., softening labor data—investors see the risk of rising inflation if the Fed eases too early. 



Bianco warned of &#8220;fiscal dominance,&#8221; the idea that the Fed becomes a tool for government borrowing by keeping rates artificially low. That may help in the short term—but it could break everything later.



"If the Fed cuts to make it cheaper for the government to borrow, they're essentially giving up the ability to raise rates again," Bianco explained. "And that's how you get spiraling out-of-control inflation."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Happens If Powell Cuts Anyway?</h2>



Bianco isn't just worried about the Fed's credibility. He's concerned about effectiveness. 



If the Fed cuts in September, but long-term yields continue to drift higher due to inflation fears or global bond market trends, the impact of that cut will be diluted—maybe even counterproductive.



"We've already seen this play out in Europe and the UK," he said, pointing out that long-term borrowing costs in those regions have risen despite rate cuts.



That's the paradox Powell may now face: cut rates to support jobs, but inadvertently send borrowing costs up for businesses and homeowners.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Lisa Cook Drama: A Political Powder Keg</h3>



Overlaying the Fed's policy dilemma is a constitutional showdown brewing in Washington.



On Monday, President Donald Trump issued an unprecedented order to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook, citing "cause" linked to alleged mortgage fraud.



"President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause' when no cause exists under the law," Cook said in a defiant statement. "I will not resign."



Bianco says this might not affect September&#8217;s rate decision, but Cook's removal—and the power to appoint her replacement—opens the door to something bigger: Trump could shape the future of the Fed's leadership.



"If Trump has four Governors in place by early next year, he could potentially veto the reappointment of regional Fed presidents," Bianco noted. That could include Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee—who narrowly passed confirmation in 2023.



This means the entire makeup of the Fed's voting structure could shift—a slow-burn political time bomb for markets to worry about in 2026.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So What's The Market Missing?</h2>



But if the bond market refuses to play along, and long-term borrowing costs remain sticky, that could limit the upside for interest-sensitive sectors.



And if Powell cuts in September simply to buy political cover?



"That's a problem," Bianco said bluntly. "If it's just 25 (basis points) to get Trump off their back, that's not credible monetary policy."

Powell Wants To Cut Rates—But The Bond Market Isn't On Board

Investors are watching small caps heat up on an otherwise slow Tuesday morning, with the Russell 2000 climbing 1% and outpacing its larger peers, amid growing bets on a Fed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">rate cut next month. </a>

The small-cap benchmark jumped to its highest since mid-December 2024 and is now on track for its strongest monthly outperformance versus the S&amp;P 500 since July 2024. That's a clear sign investors are shifting into more economically sensitive names on hopes of looser monetary policy.


While the Russell 2000 made a clean move higher, the S&amp;P 500 stayed flat near 6,450, the Nasdaq 100 inched up 0.2% to 23,481 and the Dow Jones hovered around 45,300.


Wall Street is largely in wait-and-see mode ahead of Wednesday&#8217;s NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) quarterly result.



Oil prices gave back recent gains, dragging energy stocks down 0.8%. West Texas Intermediate crude fell more than 2% to $63 per barrel, snapping a four-day winning streak.



Bond yields moved slightly lower, with the 10-year Treasury yield dipping two basis points to 4.26%, showing little reaction after President Donald Trump fired Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook, who said she would not voluntarily resign.



Gold prices rose 0.6% to $3,385 per ounce, hitting their highest level in two weeks. Traders appear to be buying the dip in the metal amid ongoing rate-cut chatter and geopolitical uncertainties.



In crypto, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell 0.3%, dropping below $110,000 and extending its losing streak to four days. Surprisingly, other crypto and altcoins showed strength with Ethereum (CRYTPO: ETH) jumping 3.8% and Solana (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/sol/usd">SOL</a>) up 3.6%.

Russell 2000 Hits 9-Month Highs, Bitcoin Drops Below $110,000: What's Moving Markets Tuesday?

A trend unseen since the aftermath of the financial crisis is unfolding, as U.S. home prices declined for a third consecutive month in June 2025, quietly signaling that cracks may be forming <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/real-estate">in the housing market.</a>

According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the national Home Price Index declined 0.2% in June, following a 0.1% decrease in May and a 0.3% drop in April.



While individually minor, the streak marks the first three-month slide in home prices since December 2010—a period defined by weak recovery following the Great Recession.



The June reading missed expectations for flat growth, adding to growing concerns over market momentum. On an annual basis, home prices were up 2.6%—the slowest year-over-year rise since early 2012.



All nine U.S. census divisions reported year-over-year increases, although the pace varied significantly. The Middle Atlantic division—covering New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania—led with a 6.7% increase. The Pacific division, which includes California and Washington, saw the weakest performance at just 0.9%.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Are Home Prices Slipping?</h3>



Affordability is the key pressure point. Home prices may be softening, but mortgage rates remain historically elevated, pushing many buyers to the sidelines. Inventory levels have also begun to rise, leading to increased seller competition.



&#8220;Home price appreciation in the U.S. has flatlined as affordability remains near record lows, inventory levels continue to build, and sellers outnumber buyers,&#8221; said Charlie Bilello, chief market strategist at Creative Planning, in a post on social media X. 



Bilello added that the pricing power sellers held during the 2020-2022 boom is fading. 



&#8220;The first half of the 2020s, with annualized home price appreciation of 4.6% above inflation, is unlikely to be repeated in the back half,&#8221; he said, noting there&#8217;s &#8220;no rational justification for prices to continue to outpace inflation by such a wide margin.&#8221;



&#8220;Only 24% of all US home sales in 2024 went to first-time home buyers, the lowest share in history,&#8221; he added.

The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund dropped 0.3% Tuesday, adding to a 0.5% loss the day before.



Among the worst performers, Crown Castle Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCI#NYSE">CCI</a>), American Tower Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMT#NYSE">AMT</a>) and SBA Communications Corp. each slipped by about 2.5%. 



The only major gainer was Digital Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DLR#NYSE">DLR</a>), which rose 1.8%—a sign that demand for data infrastructure remains resilient even as the broader property sector weakens.

Nvidia shares have broken the clean uptrend channel that carried the stock through much of 2025 as the stock has struggled to gain traction in recent weeks.&nbsp;



Despite a broad market rally in reaction to Fed Chair Jerome Powell's dovish Jackson Hole remarks last week, Nvidia's stock has not participated meaningfully in the rally.&nbsp;

Analysts are looking for the chip giant to report EPS of $1.00 and quarterly revenue of $45.86 billion. It is worth noting that Nvidia has beaten expectations on both the top and bottom lines for the last 10 consecutive quarters. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Support at $150&nbsp;</h2>



The $150 level is now the key line in the sand, <a href="https://www.bespokepremium.com/interactive/posts/think-big-blog/nvidia-nvda-microsoft-msft-charts">according</a> to Bespoke Investment Group.  This price represents Nvidia's late‑2024 highs, which serve as a major long‑term support zone. 



Heading into Nvidia&#8217;s earnings, shares were trading only about $30 above that level, leaving a relatively thin cushion should selling pressure accelerate.&nbsp;



A decisive break below $150 would not only erase a year's worth of gains, but also signal a deeper technical correction for Nvidia stock.



Seasonality is adding to investors' concerns. Historically, September has ranked as the weakest month for equities, with volatility often increasing as investors prepare for year-end positioning. 



Nvidia's chart setup looks more precarious than bullish in the near term: a broken uptrend and Q2 earnings on the horizon.&nbsp;

Nvidia's Epic Stock Run Hits A Wall—And $150 Is Suddenly In Focus

The shorts may be circling, but <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/jim-cramer">Jim Cramer</a> has a message for them: don't get cocky. The CNBC host fired off a blunt warning on X, declaring, "Shorts momentarily ‘winning' with Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>). They best not overplay their hand. Karp knows all." That confidence in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/alex-karp">CEO Alex Karp</a> comes as Palantir stock cools off—down 8% over the past five trading days—despite a monster 409% run in the past year.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bulls Vs. Bears</h2>



At about 17% below its 52-week high of $189.46, Palantir's recent dip has given bears some room to celebrate. But with short interest sitting at just 2.54%, it's hardly a stampede. Cramer's warning is aimed at those betting that Palantir's dizzying ascent—from a low of $29.31 over the past year—is running out of fuel.



Adding fuel to the debate, Jefferies analyst Brent Thill said Palantir's fundamentals are "on a different planet," during an interview with Bloomberg Tech. He highlighted the company's rare "Rule of 90" performance—where top- and bottom-line growth add up to 90%, a benchmark most software players never touch. That kind of efficiency has left Wall Street struggling to fit Palantir into the usual valuation box.

Still, Karp isn't playing the traditional growth playbook. He's floated the bold idea of growing revenue tenfold while shrinking headcount—a claim Thill called "mind-blowing." For a company whose software has historically required plenty of manpower to implement, it's an audacious bet on scalability.



For now, Cramer's message is clear: don't underestimate Karp. Palantir's fundamentals may be out of this world, but so are the expectations.

In addition to the long-term trends, the scores also pay attention to the most recent performance, with TSMC releasing its second-quarter results last month.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strong Q2 Performance And Tariff Exemptions</h2>



The company released its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/earnings/25/07/46462634/nvidia-supplier-taiwan-semiconductor-on-a-roll-profit-explodes-with-strong-margin-growth">second-quarter results</a> in July, reporting $31.7 billion in revenue, up 38.6% year-over-year, and ahead of consensus estimates at $30.04 billion. Profits during the quarter stood at $13.03 billion, or $2.47 per share, beating consensus estimates at $2.37. 



Two weeks ago, Taiwanese officials confirmed that the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/08/47084257/taiwan-semiconductor-streamlines-legacy-fabs-as-ai-chip-demand-surges">company was exempt</a> from Trump&#8217;s 100% tariffs on semiconductors, since it operates fabs in the U.S.



This was a key catalyst leading to a surge in the stock, followed by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/08/47285052/taiwan-semiconductor-wins-praise-from-jensen-huang-as-it-finalizes-six-new-nvidia-processors">visit to Taiwan</a> last week, where he emphasized TSMC&#8217;s indispensable role in the semiconductor industry, while finalizing a deal to make six new products for the company.



Shares of TSMC were up 1.12% on Monday, trading at $235.59, and are up another 0.12% after hours. This Nvidia Supplier Is Turning Up The Heat: Growth Metrics Spike As Stock Looks Set For A Breakout

European cryptocurrency exchange Bitpanda has decided against a potential listing in London due to concerns about liquidity in the city&#8217;s capital markets, according to a report published late Monday.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bitpanda Gives London A Miss</h2>



The Austrian-based cryptocurrency exchange, one of the largest in Europe, is considering a listing. However, London will not be the chosen location, co-founder Eric Demuth <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/ca0094da-6ffb-454e-876f-7ffc3d13dfd9">told</a> the Financial Times.



&#8220;Currently, liquidity-wise, the LSE [London Stock Exchange] is not doing too well," Demuth was quoted as saying. "I hope that it gets better, but over the next few years, I think the LSE is struggling a bit,"



Demurg added that the firm is considering listing&nbsp;in either Frankfurt or New&nbsp;York, but no final&nbsp;decision on location or timing&nbsp;has been made.



The London Stock Exchange didn&#8217;t immediately return Benzinga&#8217;s request for comment.

The Dow Jones index ended 349 points or 0.77% lower at 45,282.47, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell 0.43% to 6,439.32. Nasdaq Composite declined 0.22% to 21,449.29, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, tumbled 0.96% to end at 2,339.17.

Markets are looking to a slate of key economic data this week, with the main event being Nvidia&#8217;s earnings and Friday&#8217;s release of the Fed&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, for July.



Expectations are for personal income and spending to show solid gains for July, with Bill Adams, the chief economist at Comerica, forecasting a 0.6% rise for both metrics.



The headline PCE Price Index is anticipated to rise modestly, benefiting from softer food and gasoline prices. However, the core PCE index, which strips out these volatile components, is expected to have accelerated, with Comerica predicting a 0.4% monthly increase and a rise to 3.0% year-over-year. This divergence will be closely watched by the Fed as it assesses underlying inflation trends.



Further clouding the picture, consumer confidence for August is expected to have eased, though inflation expectations from households remain high.



On Thursday, the second estimate for the second-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is likely to be revised higher, from 3.0% to as much as 3.2%, primarily due to stronger consumer spending.



According to Jeffrey Roach, the chief economist, and Lawrence Gillum, chief fixed income strategist, LPL&#8217;s Strategic and Tactical Asset Allocation Committee (STAAC) is maintaining a tactical neutral stance on equities.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, fell in premarket on Monday. Following Federal Reserve Chair Powell&#8217;s pivotal speech at Jackson Hole, market analysts see a significant dovish shift, with most interpreting his remarks as a clear signal that a September interest rate cut is likely on the table.



Ed Yardeni notes that since the weak July employment report, investors have been betting that the &#8220;Fed Put&#8221; is back in play. He observes that Powell, after months of pushing back against rate cuts, adopted a new tone at Jackson Hole, stating that the &#8220;shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance&#8221;.



However, Yardeni injects a note of caution, maintaining it as his base-case scenario (with a 55% probability) that hotter-than-expected August inflation and employment data could still lead the Fed to hold off on easing in September.



Despite this, he assigns a 25% chance of a market &#8220;melt-up&#8221; if the Fed does cut rates. Yardeni&#8217;s year-end S&amp;P 500 target remains 6600, and he believes the bull market will become increasingly earnings-led, pointing to a strong 8.8% net earnings surprise in the second quarter of 2025 as evidence.



According to investment analyst Louis Navellier, the Fed&#8217;s focus has decisively shifted to its unemployment mandate, which is now &#8220;overshadowing any inflation fears&#8221;.



He highlights Powell&#8217;s concern that &#8220;downside risks to employment are rising&#8221;. Navellier offers a particularly bullish interpretation of Powell&#8217;s statement that the policy rate is &#8220;100 basis points closer to neutral,&#8221; suggesting this implies not just one but potentially four incoming rate cuts.



Navellier also points to cooling housing inflation as a supporting factor, citing an unexpected 2% rise in existing home sales in July and a 12.9% year-over-year increase in housing starts, which he sees as good news for the industry



Phil Rosen of Opening Bell Daily offers the most direct takeaway: &#8220;The Fed is ready to cut rates in September and asset prices are going higher&#8221;.
