During a pair of interviews with <a href="https://fortune.com/2025/04/11/larry-summers-financial-crisis-doge-tariffs-economic-predicions/">Fortune</a> published April 11, the former treasury secretary in the Clinton administration described President <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/03/44237846/trump-proposes-special-a-gold-card-for-wealthy-immigrants-that-costs-5-million-says-selling-enou">Donald Trump&#8217;s </a>latest tariff plan as a &#8220;narcissistic conceit,&#8221; warning that the U.S. may be headed toward a &#8220;self-inflicted&#8221; recession.&nbsp;
&#8220;I have been exposed to a lot of economic theories in my time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I have not been able to relate much of what Bessent and his colleagues are saying to any school of economic thought.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trump&#8217;s Tariff Math Raises Eyebrows</h2>
Summers took issue with the current scale of the tariffs, saying that despite Trump&#8217;s pause on reciprocal tariffs announced on April 9, the U.S. still has &#8220;the highest tariffs in 100 years.&#8221; He said the new levies are 10 times higher than those during Trump&#8217;s first term and could discourage badly needed foreign investment.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okZ24CNnL_s">Trump said</a>, &#8220;We&#8217;re making a fortune with tariffs – $2 billion a day&#8221; during a National Republican Congressional Committee dinner in Washington on April 8. However, Summers warned that this method of raising funds is economically harmful, saying, &#8220;Tariffs are regarded as a terrible source of revenue.&#8221;
&#8220;They&#8217;re regressive, like sales taxes,&#8221; he said, emphasizing their outsized impact on lower-income Americans.

Summers flagged bond market behavior as a red flag. According to <a href="https://www.pimco.com/us/en/insights/trade-wars-and-the-us-dollar">PIMCO</a>, protectionist U.S. trade policies have weakened the case for exposure to the U.S. dollar and long-term Treasury bonds, while making foreign bond markets more attractive.
&#8220;The fact that when they perceive more risk, people are moving out of instead of into U.S. long-term bonds raises substantial concerns,&#8221; he said, adding that this shift could point to a government funding crisis.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell addressed similar concerns during a press conference on May 7, following the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. He <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/mediacenter/files/fomcpresconf20250507.pdf">warned </a>that the new tariffs could increase inflation and slow the Fed's progress toward reaching its 2% inflation goal, which might delay interest rate cuts by up to a year.
Summers also challenged the administration&#8217;s claim that tariffs would revive U.S. manufacturing. According to the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/ces/publications/highlights/2025/current-employment-statistics-highlights-04-2025.pdf">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>, the U.S. manufacturing sector lost 1,000 jobs in April.&nbsp;

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently told<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adNVYPWu92Y"> CNBC</a>, &#8220;If we&#8217;re successful, tariffs would be a melting ice cube in a way because you&#8217;re taking in the revenues as the manufacturing facilities are built in the U.S.&#8221; He suggested that they&#8217;d initially hurt but eventually spark growth.&nbsp;
Summers dismissed this line of thinking, saying it lacked support from any <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/02/43420405/which-executive-order-lowers-prices-cbs-host-brennan-grills-jd-vance-on-trumps-economic-promises">economic</a> school of thought. &#8220;If the tariffs are not permanent, why will any business relocate a long-term facility to the U.S.?&#8221; he asked.
"I find the Mar-a-Lago accord a bizarre conceit, a narcissistic conceit, rather than a serious policy approach that other countries might subscribe to,&#8221; Summers continued.
Summers ended with a broader warning: &#8220;Even a terrific hand can be misplayed—and I&#8217;m afraid that&#8217;s what&#8217;s happened.&#8221;

'I've Never Seen A Theory Like This,' Says Larry Summers As He Rips Trump's Tariff Plan – Calls It A 'Narcissistic Conceit' Destined To Backfire

Despite a powerful 22% surge in the S&amp;P 500 since the April lows—driven by easing U.S.-China trade tensions and a 90-day pause on new tariffs—only half of the index&#8217;s stocks have managed to rise above their 200-day moving average, indicating a market rally <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers">that remains potentially incomplete.</a>
This technical indicator, often used to gauge long-term trends and market breadth, currently shows that just 49.9% of S&amp;P 500 components are in what traders would consider a bullish trend. 
That figure remains below both the five- and 10-year averages of 60%, suggesting a wide swath of the market has yet to participate in the rebound.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Breadth Gauge Shows Room To Run</h3>
Over the past four years, the percentage of stocks above their 200-day moving average has moved within a wide 10% to 92% range. The extreme lows—seen in June and September 2022 at just 10%—came during periods of heightened recession fears and monetary tightening. 
The recent cycle bottom occurred just last month, when the figure dipped to 15% following April's sharp, tariff-driven selloff.
The highest reading in the last four years came in May 2021, at 92%, during a time of peak post-pandemic optimism. More recently, a high of 82% was recorded in September 2024, following the start of Federal Reserve policy easing.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Analysts Say About The Tariff Pause and Market Reaction</h3>
Analysts say that the 90-day tariff truce announced in April and this week&#8217;s truce between the U.S. and China helped revive risk appetite, but they remain cautious about its long-term effects.
In a note on Wednesday, Peter Oppenheimer, strategist at Goldman Sachs, said the outcome was "much better than we had expected," noting that the tariff levies of 30 percentage points by the U.S. and +5 points by China were significantly lower than prior worst-case estimates.
Oppenheimer also highlighted that the new U.S.-UK trade agreement contributes to a more constructive global growth outlook and has mitigated fears of long-term economic damage from the April drawdown.
He added that the market has begun to price out recession risks. 
"Certainly, recent news has been supportive for risk in three respects: it has shown the U.S. Administration to be pragmatic and keen to de-escalate&#8230; it suggests a lower likely outcome for the average effective tariff rate&#8230; and it has led to a number of growth upgrades," he said.
Rick Gardner, chief investment officer at RGA Investments, said markets are already "pricing in an environment where the U.S. and China are able to trade with each other," even if some economic weakness persists.
"Even if we see a continued economic slowdown, the stock market may have already priced that in during the April selloff," Gardner said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500&#8217;s Top 20 Laggards – Price vs. 200-Day Moving Average</h3>
More than 20 S&amp;P 500 stocks are still trading over 20% below their 200-day moving averages, highlighting substantial technical room for recovery among the index's biggest underperformers during the tariff-relief rally.

<a href="https://doordash.com/">DoorDash</a>, a leading platform for local commerce, and <a href="https://wing.com/">Wing</a>, the global leader in residential drone delivery, are introducing drone delivery to Charlotte, NC for the first time. This marks the latest milestone in their ongoing partnership focused on bringing faster, more efficient, and sustainable food delivery options to customers.
Starting today, eligible DoorDash customers within about four miles of The Arboretum Shopping Center in southern Charlotte can order from a selection of local and national restaurants and choose to have their items delivered by drone. The lineup includes Charlotte favorites like Curry Junction, Matcha Cafe Maiko, Joa Korean food, and Panera Bread&#x2A; — the city's first national partner available for drone delivery. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) will report its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday before the market opens. Wall Street expects earnings per share of $1.37 and revenue of $33.21 billion as investors look for clues on whether Alibaba&#8217;s AI-heavy transformation is beginning to drive results.
The stock is up 65.6% over the past year and 54.9% year-to-date, surging more than 15% in just the past month. Much of that rally has been fueled by renewed investor optimism around Alibaba's cloud and artificial intelligence strategy &#8211; and a stunning endorsement from Goldman Sachs.

In a recent <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/886982/0000769993-25-000253-index.htm">regulatory disclosure</a>, Goldman revealed it had purchased over $1 billion worth of BABA shares in the first quarter, making it the largest institutional buyer of the stock last quarter. That vote of confidence is especially notable ahead of earnings as investors evaluate whether the company's $52.4 billion AI infrastructure push is translating into performance.
Let's look at what the charts indicate for Alibaba and how it maps against Wall Street estimates.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strong Bullish Momentum Ahead Of Q4 Earnings</h2>
Alibaba stock is showing strong bullish momentum heading into the print.

At $131.65, BABA stock trades above all key short- and long-term moving averages. The eight-day simple moving average (SMA) is $127.32, the 20-day SMA is $120.41, the 50-day SMA is $125.95 and the 200-day SMA sits at $101.92. BABA stock is comfortably above all of these indicators &#8211; suggesting a sustained uptrend.
Momentum indicators echo the bullish sentiment. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is at 2.42, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 62.14 &#8211; still below the overbought threshold of 70.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ZeroSearch To Give Competitive Edge To Alibaba</h2>
Meanwhile, for Alibaba, AI remains front and center. Chairman Joe Tsai recently <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3309905/ai-will-be-mainstay-alibabas-business-next-3-5-years-chairman-joe-tsai-says">told</a> employees that AI will be the core engine behind all of Alibaba's businesses in the next 3-5 years. 
The company also <a href="https://www.techradar.com/pro/alibaba-zerosearch-can-reduce-ai-for-search-training-cost-by-88-percent-company-claims">unveiled</a> a new training framework &#8211; "ZeroSearch" &#8211; that it claims can reduce AI training costs for search models by up to 88%. Innovations like this could give Alibaba's cloud division a competitive edge in the crowded AI infrastructure market.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Alibaba Analysts See 32% Upside</h2>
Alibaba Ratings &amp; Consensus Estimates: The consensus analyst rating on Alibaba stock is Buy, with a price target of $147.25. More recently, analysts at Citigroup, Mizuho, and Benchmark have issued bullish ratings, with an average price target of $176.33—implying a 32% upside from current levels.
