As tensions in geopolitics rise and global markets seesaw, investors are flocking to gold — not in bullion form, but through <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">ETFs that provide hassle-free access</a> without storage woes. 
As <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/specialty-etfs/25/04/44748769/gold-fever-grips-wall-street-these-etfs-are-striking-it-rich">gold prices reach 18-month highs</a> and uncertainty lingers thickly over U.S.-China trade relations, gold-backed ETFs are witnessing a record high demand.
The gold mania hasn&#8217;t been confined to the precious metal itself. Gold miners are also getting in on the action. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>) zoomed to its best level since 2012, surging 6.11% at last check Friday. 
Largest holding in the fund, Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) is up more than 9% today. It jumped 25% this week alone, — its most optimistic weekly gain in 1998 — as investor demand expanded beyond bullion to the miners that dig it.
A number of other gold miner ETFs also showed impressive performances for the day:

<li>iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RING#NASDAQ">RING</a>) took the lead with a 6.39% increase at mid-day.</li>
<li>Sprott Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SGDM#NYSE">SGDM</a>) closely followed with a 5.87% increase.</li>
<li>Global X Gold Explorers ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOEX#NYSE">GOEX</a>), which invests in exploration-oriented miners, went up 4.75%.</li>
<li>VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDXJ#NYSE">GDXJ</a>), which invests in smaller-cap gold miners, went up 5.13%.</li>
</ul>
In March alone, physically backed gold ETFs across the world collected $8.6 billion in inflows, the World Gold Council reported. That brought first-quarter inflows to $21 billion — the second-largest on record, behind only the frenzied second quarter of 2020 at the pandemic&#8217;s peak.
North American investors spearheaded the rush, contributing $12.9 billion—or about 76% of the quarter&#8217;s total. The action is part of a wider flight to safety as equity and bond markets totter in the face of renewed volatility.
The renewed gold rush follows just days after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on 60 nations. 
Some countries were granted a 90-day respite — the EU among them. But China was struck with a 125% tariff increase. Beijing&#8217;s retaliatory move with an 84% tariff renewed the threat of an all-out U.S.-China trade war. While markets faltered, gold rose 3.3% on Wednesday and another 1.6% on Thursday, rising to within $50 of its historic high. Spot gold last traded at $3,117.15 an ounce in London.
Even a stunning rebound in equities hasn&#8217;t dimmed the yellow metal&#8217;s sheen — the S&amp;P 500 surged almost 10% on hopes for tariff relief. Yet, investors continue to hedge with gold as they prepare for more economic uncertainty and potential Federal Reserve intervention. A falling dollar and growing expectations for rate cuts only fuel the momentum.
The widespread surge in large-cap, junior, and exploration-centric gold mining ETFs highlights investor belief in depth within the precious metals sector. With volatility emerging as the new standard, physical gold and its equities-based counterparts are retaking their strategic safe-haven roles.

Merit develops, manufactures and distributes proprietary medical devices used in interventional, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, particularly in cardiology, radiology, oncology, critical care and endoscopy.
Barrington Research writes that in 2024, about 41% of Merit Medical&#8217;s revenue of $1.36 billion was generated outside of the U.S., and about 11% of Merit Medical&#8217;s 2024 revenue <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43956487/merit-medical-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results-and-issues-fiscal-year-2025-guidan" rel="noreferrer noopener">was generated in China</a>.

Analyst Michael Petusky also highlights the company&#8217;s several manufacturing and packaging facilities outside of the U.S., including in Mexico, Brazil, Ireland, France, The Netherlands and Singapore — along with U.S.-based manufacturing and packaging in Utah, Texas, Virginia and Minnesota.
Petusky believes most of the products Merit makes in Mexico — its most important international facility — are protected by the USMCA trade agreement, which is still in effect. Thus, the company is shielded from recent U.S. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">tariffs on Mexican goods</a>.
The analyst maintains the outperform rating and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/MMSI/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">price target of $111</a>.
But the growing trade tensions between the U.S. and China pose a serious risk to Merit&#8217;s $150 million revenue from China.
While it seems unlikely that tariffs over 100% will last long between the world&#8217;s two biggest economies, if they do, it would significantly affect Merit&#8217;s financial outlook for the rest of 2025 and beyond, including its long-term growth plans.
Merit Medical forecasts fiscal year 2025 revenue of $1.47 billion-$1.49 billion versus a consensus of $1.477 billion. The company estimates Adjusted EPS of $3.58-$3.70 versus the consensus of $3.74.
Continued Growth Initiatives covers the 2024-2026 timeframe, and key goals include 5%-7% annual organic revenue growth, $400 million in aggregate free cash flow, and a minimum of 200 bps points of adjusted operating margin improvement to at least 20% by the end of the long-range plan.
MMSI Price Action: Merit Medical Systems stock is up 0.16% at $91.69 at publication Friday.

BofA Securities polled approximately 1,000 U.S. participants between April 7 and April 10 as part of the Monthly Consumer Survey Series to gather insights into their anticipated spending habits. Here are some of the main takeaways from this month's findings.

The percentage of respondents planning to buy a new home has steadily declined, falling from 23% in February to 20% in March and down further to 18% in April, a slight decrease compared to the same time last year.
Likewise, interest in purchasing a new appliance fell from 33% in March to 29% this month, marking a three-year low and a sharp decline compared to April 2024.
A growing share of consumers anticipate higher spending on sporting goods and home fitness over the coming year.
According to the survey, 18% plan to boost their spending in the above-mentioned category, the highest percentage recorded in the past two years.
This marks a notable rise from 13% in April of last year and reinforces the continuing generational movement toward healthier lifestyle choices.

Jones Research analyst Jason Weaver shared thoughts on AGNC Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGNC#NASDAQ">AGNC</a>) first-quarter <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/AGNC/analyst-ratings">preliminary numbers released today</a>.
AGNC said it expects net spread and dollar roll income of 44 cents. That&#8217;s higher than analysts&#8217; <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/n44750731/agnc-investment-corp-announces-preliminary-estimates-for-first-quarter-2025">estimate of 41 cents and consensus of 39 cents</a>.
The company&#8217;s total comprehensive income per share is 12 cents, much better than analysts&#8217; estimates of 7 cents.
As of March 31, AGNC held a total investment portfolio valued at approximately $78.9 billion. That includes around $7.5 billion in to-be-announced agency mortgage-backed securities (MBS). It also has about $900 million in credit risk transfer, non-Agency securities, and other mortgage-related credit investments.
The analyst notes that at the end of the quarter, AGNC's tangible book value (TBV) stood at $8.25, which reflects a decline of 190 basis points from $8.41, primarily driven by spread widening.
Weaver adds that he sees additional pressure continuing into the second quarter, with TBV estimated at $7.75-$7.85 as of April 9, representing a 5.5% decline quarter-to-date.
This drop has also contributed to an increase in leverage, which now stands at roughly 7.9x, cites the analyst.
Overall, the analyst says that although performance so far in the second quarter has been underwhelming, he anticipates some near-term recovery in book value per share (BVPS) as market volatility begins to ease.
Mortgage-backed securities (MBS) yields, which have been lagging behind Treasury and swap rates, are expected to converge in the near term, adds the analyst.
Moreover, Weaver says that AGNC&#8217;s ability to deploy new capital into Agency RMBS at current expected returns of over 20% could enhance its dividend sustainability over the medium term.
Price Action: AGNC shares are up 0.06% at $8.125&nbsp;at the last check Friday.

Dourdeville called for several of his colleagues to resign and expressed &#8220;grave concerns about the current state of the company.&#8221;

Capri announced yesterday it will <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44738776/versace-goes-prada-capris-big-exit-sparks-fashion-power-shift">sell the Versace brand to Prada for $1.375 billion </a>in cash, with the deal expected to close in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approval. 
The company said proceeds will strengthen its balance sheet, boost investment in Michael Kors, and support debt reduction and share buybacks. Capri bought Versace in 2018 for $2.12 billion.

The Versace sale had been anticipated, as reports of Capri seeking a buyer had circulated for months, with Prada emerging as a likely suitor. The $1.375 billion price tag falls within earlier estimates, said the analyst.
While Capri originally paid 22x EBITDA in 2018, evaluating the current deal is challenging due to Versace's weak margins. So the analyst estimates Prada is paying roughly 22x FY24 EBITDA and 1.6x trailing sales.
According to the analyst, the sale of Versace is seen as a logical move by Capri after the failed Tapestry Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TPR#NYSE">TPR</a>) acquisition, allowing the company to raise capital, enhance margins and reinforce its balance sheet.
Although Capri is selling Versace at a loss, the deal is expected to boost overall company margins and free up funds to support revitalization efforts for Michael Kors. 
Parting with Versace eliminates a once-expected growth catalyst, and questions remain about Michael Kors&#8217; future profitability due to ongoing challenges in wholesale and promotional markets, noted the analyst.
CPRI Price Action: Capri Holdings shares traded lower by 0.62% at $14.54 at publication Friday.
