On one front, Beijing is tightening the screws with an antitrust probe. On the other, policy whiplash from Washington has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/09/47626175/nvidias-china-chip-boom-faces-threat-as-beijing-pushes-for-homegrown-ai">turned Nvidia into a bargaining chip</a> in a larger geopolitical game. Together, they're creating the kind of uncertainty markets hate and rivals love.



China's market regulator said a preliminary investigation found Nvidia violated the country's anti-monopoly law, tied to commitments made when Beijing conditionally approved its 2020 Mellanox acquisition. The watchdog says the probe will continue. For a company that generated about 13% of revenue in China in the last fiscal year, that's not a footnote—it's material exposure under threat.

The timing is pointed. Beijing's move landed as U.S. and Chinese officials convened trade talks in Madrid, underscoring how semiconductors sit at the center of a broader strategic rivalry. While the regulator hasn't detailed remedies, China's antitrust law allows fines of 1%–10% of prior-year sales, and the message to U.S. tech is unmissable: China will use regulatory levers when it wants to—and it's willing to keep the process open-ended.



Nvidia&#8217;s stock was down 0.3% at $177.22 on Monday, according to data from <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro.</a>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Regulators Play Chess With Chips</h2>



Nvidia's China troubles started in December 2024, when the Asian nation's market regulator, the State Administration for Market Regulation, launched its probe into Nvidia, alleging bundling practices and discriminatory terms that hurt Chinese buyers. This aligned with Beijing's push for chip self-reliance under its &#8220;Made in China 2025&#8221; plan, urging firms like Tencent to favor local chips, such as Huawei's Ascend, over Nvidia's.



The plot thickened in April 2025, when the Trump administration banned exports of Nvidia's China-tailored H20 chip, designed to comply with earlier Biden-era restrictions. The move, part of Trump's broader tariffs and curbs on more than 140 Chinese firms, led to a $5.5 billion inventory write-down and a drop in China sales. Ouch.

By August, Trump pivoted, allowing H20 exports under a deal reportedly requiring Nvidia to share 15% of China revenues with the U.S. government—only to see Beijing discourage local giants from buying them on security grounds, even summoning companies to discuss their orders. The about-face from earlier hardline restrictions solves one problem but creates another: policy uncertainty that invites Beijing's scrutiny and accelerates China's push to go local.



And that push is real. Alibaba and Baidu are testing and deploying in-house AI chips, while Huawei and Cambricon are gaining market share. Analysts at Bernstein expect Nvidia's China AI chip share to slip—from roughly two-thirds to about half—as domestic players rise and policy friction persists. Even if Nvidia resumes compliant shipments, it may not reclaim its former dominance in a market rewiring itself for self-reliance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trump's Move, China's Message: Game On</h2>



So, is Trump "to blame"? It's more complicated than that. U.S. controls didn't start with Trump—and plenty of voices in Washington argue for keeping advanced U.S. chips out of China on security grounds.



On the other hand, Trump&#8217;s April ban and overall hawkish stance arguably poked the bear, accelerating Beijing&#8217;s antitrust push as retaliation. Jim Cramer on CNBC has called Trump&#8217;s China policy a direct drag on Nvidia. And yeah, the timing of today&#8217;s ruling, right amid trade negotiations, smells like tit-for-tat.



Bottom line? This situation is becoming increasingly complex due to a messy mix: U.S. controls (from both administrations), China&#8217;s nationalist drive, and Nvidia&#8217;s own market dominance drawing scrutiny. Trump&#8217;s moves add fuel, but blaming him solo ignores Beijing&#8217;s agency and the broader AI arms race. For investors, it&#8217;s a wake-up call—Nvidia&#8217;s still a beast, but China exposure could mean more wild swings. Keep watching those trade talks; they just might flip the script again.

Gene Munster says Oracle Corp&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>) $300 billion deal with OpenAI highlights just how early the company—and others—are in the AI race, sending shares <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/earnings/25/09/47583099/oracle-stock-soars-despite-missing-q1-estimates-heres-why">soaring last week</a> despite a quarterly report that missed Street estimates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Oracle's Historic Contract</h2>



A surge in Oracle's stock price briefly cemented co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison as the richest person <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/09/47606270/larry-ellison-topples-elon-musk-to-become-worlds-richest-as-oracle-stock-explodes-to-record-highs">in the world.</a> While the title was short-lived, Munster, a managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, says Oracle's $300 billion contract with OpenAI "cements&#8221; the company&#8217;s position as an AI &#8220;hyperscaler."



"The deal underscores just how early we are in AI, and how massive the infrastructure layer will prove to be," Munster <a href="https://genemunster.com/oracles-openai-deal-underscores-how-early-we-are-in-ai/#:~:text=Oracle's%20OpenAI%20Deal%20Underscores%20How,Are%20in%20AI%20%7C%20GeneMunster.com&amp;text=At%20the%20surface%3A%20Oracle's%20historic,layer%20will%20prove%20to%20be.">said</a>. "That foundation will power AI-native companies, which in turn will reshape industries and change the world."



Munster said Oracle is no longer just a tech stock benefitting from cloud growth, and that the OpenAI contract makes the company a key AI infrastructure player.



The OpenAI deal is part of Oracle's $455 billion in remaining performance obligations for AI workloads. This number was up 359% year-over-year and more than double that of analyst estimates. The deal and backlog have changed how investors view Oracle, according to Munster.



"Investors now see a multiyear growth profile tied to AI workloads anchored by OpenAI's massive, long-term commitment."



The backlog and AI growth is not without risk, Munster says, as Oracle is now more reliant on one customer.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AI Growth Still Early</h2>



Munster said the new Oracle, OpenAI tie-up shows that AI infrastructure could be in the early phases.



"After June earnings I revised my view that we were in the second inning. I'm now debating if we're in the first inning," Munster said of the AI buildout.



Munster said that it's likely that the AI buildout should have increased growth rates "for the next few years."



"The size of Oracle's backlog highlights that AI demand is stretching beyond available supply and mind-blowing levels."



The investor said expectations continue to increase for AI investment, which means companies that are AI hyperscalers could see increased backlogs and guidance.

Oracle stock is up 2% to $298 on Monday versus a 52-week trading range of $118.86 to $345.72. Oracle stock is up 79.7% year-to-date in 2025.

In a CNBC <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27BDjcSusb0">interview</a> on Friday, Rabois said that Opendoor is not a meme stock and pushed back on notions that its recent surge is purely sentiment-driven.&nbsp;

Retail investors are expressing a clear view that Opendoor deserves more investment because of its unique role in reshaping real estate transactions, Rabois said.&nbsp;



"Markets are designed to allocate capital. Consumers are voting with their feet to say we want more capital being allocated to Opendoor. That&#8217;s a good thing. That&#8217;s how society should work," the chairman said.&nbsp;



Rabois cheered the involvement of individual investors and their ability to identify the fundamentals and long-term potential of Opendoor as what will drive the company's future success.&nbsp;



"I think the whole retail movement is misunderstood. It&#8217;s better when consumers say, I want more of this and less of that. We don&#8217;t need professionals. We need consumers saying, this is what is better for society, and I want to invest more capital," Rabois said.&nbsp;

Other prominent voices have also said that Opendoor is not a meme stock.&nbsp;



Both Opendoor promoter Eric Jackson and crypto investor Anthony Pompliano have rejected the idea that Opendoor is "just a meme stock" and rather frame the stock's story as misunderstood.&nbsp;



They recognize risk—it will take time and execution to meet projections—but they stress that potential is a more accurate driver than sentiment.



It seems Rabois agrees and views Opendoor as a potential juggernaut with significant upside if it executes well.

Opendoor 'Not A Meme Stock'? But It's Been Trading Like A TikTok Trend

OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor believes the AI sector may be in a bubble similar to the dot-com era, but that's not deterring him from OpenAI or <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/artificial-intelligence">his other AI startup</a>. 



What Happened: As AI use cases grow, valuations in the sector have surged. OpenAI is now one of the world's most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/08/46806894/openai-just-raised-8-3-billion-at-this-valuation-chatgpt-growth-soars">valuable private companies</a>. In a recent <a href="https://www.theverge.com/decoder-podcast-with-nilay-patel/773904/sierra-ceo-bret-taylor-ai-agents-openai-bubble-interview">interview</a> with The Verge, Taylor expressed caution about the sector&#8217;s rising valuations.



The Verge also asked Taylor about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said that we're currently in an AI bubble. Taylor agreed.



"I think there's a lot of parallels to the internet bubble," Taylor, the former CTO of Meta Platforms, said.



Dot-com companies like Pets.com and Webvan were flops and still got attention. But some companies made it out of the bubble, Taylor explained. That includes &#8220;two of the largest companies in the world&#8221; — Amazon and Google.



The OpenAI chairman noted that examining the growth of GDP reveals how much has been created by the "existence of the internet."



"One could argue that all the people in 1999 were kind of right. It was as impactful on pretty much every measure." &nbsp;



Taylor gave props to Webvan that may have been early and help pave the way for the success of companies like Instacart and DoorDash today.



Taylor said if you were an Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) shareholder during the dot-com bubble, you're still looking good today.



When it comes to the AI sector today and the bubble, Taylor said, "there's going to be huge winners."



"Some companies will fail and some will succeed."



Taylor said AI can transform the economy and create value for the future, but some companies and investors will lose money.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Taylor Isn't Worried</h2>



An AI bubble would be bad news for Taylor, who is also the CEO and founder of Sierra, an AI agent company. And yet, Taylor isn't worried about an AI bubble. Instead, he argues against the notion that companies aren&#8217;t seeing results from AI spending.



"We're just in a really new world because we're taking something scarce and making it plentiful," Taylor said.



When it comes to Sierra, Taylor said the company isn&#8217;t selling AI. Rather, it&#8217;s &#8220;selling customer experience&#8221; and has a near 100% success rate with customers doing proof of concept studies before going live.



As Taylor sees it, we're in "the early days of AI." Companies are using the tech to either solve problems or build AI solutions themselves, he explains.



For example, Sierra is partnering with retailers so consumers can submit a photo of damaged goods as a warranty claim. The new product is then shipped out, all done without a human involved.



"These agents are remarkable at what they're doing,&#8221; Taylor adds.



Sierra has hundreds of customers, with more than 50% of the company's customers having annual revenue of more than $1 billion and 20% of the company's customers having yearly revenue of more than $10 billion.

OpenAI Chairman Compares AI To Dot-Com Bubble: 'Some Companies Will Fail And Some Will Succeed'

If you haven't read Thomas W. Phelps's&#8221;100 to 1 in the Stock Market,&#8221; you owe it to yourself to pick it up. I've read hundreds of investing books across my career, but this one stands near the top of the pile.



It's not a gimmick, not a get-rich-quick tract, but a timeless manual on how great fortunes are actually built in the stock market: by buying exceptional companies early, holding on with discipline, and letting compounding do the work.



Born in 1902, Phelps was not some ivory tower theorist. He came of age during the Roaring Twenties and began his career as a financial journalist with The Wall Street Journal and Barron's before becoming a security analyst, portfolio manager, and ultimately an investment counselor.



He lived through the crash of 1929, the Great Depression, multiple recessions, bull and bear markets alike. By the time he published his book in 1972, he had seen enough cycles to separate fads from enduring truths. His conclusion was stunning: between 1932 and 1971, more than 350 stocks had returned 100 times or more for patient holders. In every single year of that span, at least one company achieved 100-to-1 status.



I can't recommend this book strongly enough. It's as close to a field guide for compounding as you will find. But if you can&#8217;t, let me summarize it for you.

Now, Phelps doesn't sell hot tips or trading tricks. Pay attention to moats, reinvestment rates, and time. That's it. Read it, reread it, mark it up, keep it on your desk. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Phelps's Framework In Plain English</h2>



Phelps's core idea was stark and liberating. Own exceptional enterprises early, let time and product-market fit do the heavy lifting, and do not interrupt compounding without a very good reason. He cataloged hundreds of historical 100-baggers across four decades and found the same patterns over and over. Small to mid-size companies with real moats. Products or processes that made something cheaper, faster, safer, or simply possible for the first time. Managements that reinvested at high returns and investors willing to sit still long enough to let the math work.



The framework is simple. First, look for durable advantage. That can be network effects, proprietary know-how, local monopoly dynamics, switching costs, or advantageous cost structures. Second, verify the runway. The addressable market has to be large enough to allow a great operator compound for many years without hitting a wall. Third, insist on present-tense profitability. Phelps loved time, but he did not love science projects. Cash economics keep you honest. Fourth, buy when the narrative is still forming. A modest valuation with a long runway is better than a "perfect story" priced for perfection. Last, do less. The tax deferral and error-reduction from holding winners is part of the edge.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Today's 25 Phelps Candidates</h2>



Using that lens, here are twenty-five profitable companies across sectors that, in my view, best fit the spirit of Phelps's criteria right now. I grouped them by how they create advantage, not by index label. The point is to show the compounding engines, not to celebrate categories.



Start with the builders of the new compute and power footprint. EMCOR Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EME#NYSE">EME</a>), Sterling Infrastructure (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STRL#NASDAQ">STRL</a>), Argan (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGX#NYSE">AGX</a>) and Dycom (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DY#NYSE">DY</a>) live where rubber meets road for data centers, grid upgrades, and communications build-outs. They are execution machines with contracting models that can scale through cycles, and they convert backlog to cash. Quanta Services (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PWR#NYSE">PWR</a>) is larger but still relevant to the thesis. It has the balance sheet, the craft labor depth, and the customer relationships to be a long-duration beneficiary of transmission, distribution, and industrial electrification. All five make essential things happen on time and on budget, and that is a moat in a world short on skilled trades and long on demand.



Move up the stack to precision manufacturers that quietly own their niches. Celestica (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLS#NYSE">CLS</a>) and Fabrinet (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FN#NYSE">FN</a>) sit at the intersection of optics, networking, and advanced manufacturing for AI and cloud. Both run asset-light, engineering-heavy models that generate high returns on capital when throughput rises. They are not household names, which is the point. Profit today, capacity to reinvest, and customers who will need more, not less, of what they do.



In pure network infrastructure, Arista Networks (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANET#NYSE">ANET</a>) is the category killer in high-speed switching for cloud and AI clusters. It is much bigger than the typical "microcap that becomes a monster," but great compounding machines do not ask our permission. On the server side, Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>) has become the fastest-moving platform supplier in AI hardware. It is not a secret anymore, but the combination of velocity, modular design, and tight customer feedback loops can keep returns elevated longer than skeptics think.



Materials with pricing power are classic Phelps ground. Martin Marietta Materials(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MLM#NYSE">MLM</a>) is a local-monopoly aggregates business with growing demand from highways, data center pads, and on-shoring industrial sites. When you control the rock near the job site, you control the margin. Breedon Group (OTCPK: BRDNF) is a UK-anchored materials roll-up with disciplined capital allocation and attractive regional positions. Both convert volume and price into cash reliably and have acquisition math that can compound for years.



Engineering scale matters, too. WSP Global (OTCPK: WSPOF) brings technical bench strength to infrastructure, environment, and building systems worldwide. The moat is expertise at scale plus customer intimacy across regulated and mission-critical end markets. These models can outrun GDP for a long time because the knowledge gets reused and priced correctly.



On the consumer side, the two factors to favor are velocity and format advantage. e.l.f. Beauty (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ELF#NYSE">ELF</a>) is the best example of an insurgent brand compounding market share with digital feedback loops, fast innovation cycles, and disciplined pricing. Academy Sports (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASO#NASDAQ">ASO</a>) pairs strong private-label penetration with tight inventory control and expanding omnichannel. Boot Barn (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BOOT#NYSE">BOOT</a>) owns a niche with loyal customers, hard-to-replicate merchandising, and store economics that travel. Sprouts Farmers Market (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SFM#NASDAQ">SFM</a>) has quietly rebuilt its box economics around produce first, wellness adjacency, and disciplined new-unit growth. All four produce real earnings, reinvest at high returns, and still have long unit growth runways.



Cash-rich, counter-cyclical specialty finance can also turn into compounding machines. FirstCash (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCFS#NASDAQ">FCFS</a>) is a pawn and small-dollar retail finance operator with a durable moat in underwriting and store operations. The business is not fashionable, which is fine by us; it throws off cash, funds growth internally, and benefits when mainstream credit tightens. In software, Agilysys (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGYS#NASDAQ">AGYS</a>) has become a sticky vertical platform in hospitality with high recurring revenue, improving margins, and a long upgrade cycle ahead. It is a perfect example of boring software getting less boring as operating leverage shows up in GAAP results.



Internationally, two utilities and a fintech meet the test. Sabesp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SBS#NYSE">SBS</a>) is a Brazilian water utility with improved governance, rising free cash flow, and a multi-year capex plan that can translate into earnings and dividend growth. "We currently have very good sales figures and have therefore revised our production plans for the third and fourth quarters upwards," Thierig said.

On the economic front, the University of Michigan consumer sentiment declined to 55.4 in September from 58 in August, and compared to market estimates of 58.



Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with industrials, health care and materials stocks recording the biggest losses on Friday. However, consumer discretionary and utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

Michael Saylor may now seem comfortable with the rise and adoption of the broader crypto ecosystem, but just over a year ago, he was every bit the staunch Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) maximalist.



At the time, he dismissed the likes of Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>), Solana (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/sol/usd">SOL</a>) and XRP (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/xrp/usd">XRP</a>), predicting that Wall Street would never accept anything beyond Bitcoin.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Saylor&#8217;s Sweeping Prediction About Other Cryptos</h2>



During the MicroStrategy World: Bitcoin for Corporations event in May 2024, Saylor said that no other token is going to achieve institutional acceptance this decade.

However, Saylor was proven remarkably wrong. 



Not only were <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/05/39024913/ethereum-etf-approval-to-spur-a-basket-of-crypto-tokens-within-a-year-says-td-cowen">spot Ethereum ETFs approved</a> by the SEC later that month, but the momentum for similar investment products tied to other altcoins also accelerated, boosted by the arrival of a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/09/47466393/trumps-crypto-advisors-push-sec-and-cftc-to-unite-and-streamline-digital-asset-regulation"> pro-cryptocurrency administration</a> under President Donald Trump.



Since listing, the nine ETH ETFs have together attracted $12.84 billion in net inflows and $27.73 billion in total assets, <a href="https://sosovalue.com/assets/etf/us-eth-spot">according </a>to data from SoSo Value. 



Moreover, several spot ETF applications centered around <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/solana-etf">Solana</a>, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/sector-etfs/25/06/46024346/xrp-next-big-etf-bet-polymarket-bettors-predict">XRP </a>and even Dogecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>) have been filed with the SEC. Big-ticket financial names, such as Grayscale, 21Shares and Fidelity, have thrown their hat in the ring.



Additionally, the cryptocurrency treasury play popularized by Saylor&#8217;s firm has quickly spread to other coins. According to <a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/treasuries/solana">CoinGecko</a>, more than $15 billion in ETH has been purchased by companies for their corporate treasuries, while SOL-focused firms have invested nearly $1.4 billion.



With things changing quickly around him, Saylor has taken a more accommodating view. During an interview last month, he said that the growing treasury interest in ETH and other cryptocurrencies is &#8220;good for everybody&#8221; in the digital asset space.
