What's Going On With Pepsi Stock?

Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>) shares are trading higher on Thursday. According to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>, KO stock has gained over 15% in the past year.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled 864 12-packs of Coca-Cola sold in two states earlier this month, and on Monday, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/?Event=96489" rel="noreferrer noopener">recall</a> was classified as Class II.
The recalled beverages, which were bottled and distributed by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC, in Milwaukee, were recalled as they were contaminated by plastic, according to a release by the FDA.
A spokesperson <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2025/03/26/coca-cola-recall-plastic-contamination/82668218007/" rel="noreferrer noopener">told </a>USA Today that the cases are being withdrawn for not meeting the company&#8217;s high-quality standards, emphasizing their commitment to providing high-quality products to consumers.
The recall was initiated on March 6 and subsequently classified by the FDA on March 24, 2025.

Coca-Cola has been selling more drinks in aluminum cans in recent years as part of its sustainability efforts.
Still, in 2023, nearly half (47.7%) of its beverages were packaged in plastic, while aluminum and steel cans made up just 26%, according to the company&#8217;s environmental report.&nbsp;
The company had set a goal to make all of its packaging recyclable this year and to use at least 50% recycled content by 2030. But as of last year, only 17% of its PET plastic contained recycled material.

What's Going On With Coca-Cola Stock Today?

PepsiCo, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>) shares are trading <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">slightly higher on Friday</a>.
Today, the snacks and beverages behemoth landed in hot water after facing legal action from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which alleges that the company has engaged in illegal price discrimination.
According to the FTC&#8217;s complaint, Pepsi has been providing unfair pricing advantages to one of its largest customers—a major big box retailer—while raising prices for competing retailers and customers.
Reuters reports that the retailer is none other than Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>), citing a source familiar with the discussions.
&#8220;When firms like Pepsi give massive retailers a leg up, it tilts the playing field against small firms and ultimately inflates prices for American consumers,&#8221; said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan.
&#8220;The FTC&#8217;s action will help ensure all grocers and other businesses—no matter the size—can get a fair shake and compete on the merits of their skill, efficiency, and talent.&#8221;
The FTC claims that Pepsi has consistently given preferential treatment to this large retailer by offering promotional payments, advertising allowances, and other key benefits.

These advantages, however, have not been extended to competing grocery chains or independent stores, which include small, local businesses.
The FTC argues that this has created an uneven playing field and inflated prices for consumers.
Pepsi&#8217;s conduct is being scrutinized under the Robinson-Patman Act (RPA), which prohibits price discrimination that disadvantages small businesses and raises consumer prices. The act specifically forbids manufacturers from using promotional allowances to favor one retailer over others. The FTC believes that Pepsi&#8217;s actions violate the RPA and are detrimental to fair competition.
The Commission vote to allow staff to file for a permanent injunction in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York was 3-2, with Commissioners Melissa Holyoak and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/24/12/42428224/bitcoin-ethereum-dogecoin-mirror-stock-declines-ahead-of-crucial-inflation-data-release-top-analyst-says-buy-the-dip-predicts-275k-btc-target" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew N. Ferguson </a>dissenting. 
This case&nbsp;marks the FTC&#8217;s latest action against price discrimination, following its December 2024 case against Southern Glazer&#8217;s, a major distributor of wine and spirits.
The court will ultimately decide whether Pepsi&#8217;s pricing practices have violated the law, and if so, what steps will be taken to remedy the situation.

FTC Sues PepsiCo, Alleges Illegal Price Discrimination In Favor Of Big Box Retailer

Mondelez International, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) Board of Directors approved a new share repurchase program of up to $9 billion in Class A common stock, effective January 1, 2025, and lasting until December 31, 2027.
This new authorization will replace the current $6 billion program, of which approximately $2.8 billion remains and would otherwise expire at the end of 2025.
Dividend: The Board of Directors also declared a quarterly dividend of 47 cents per share of Class A common stock.
The dividend will be payable on January 14, 2025, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on December 31, 2024.
Earlier in July, Mondelez raised its quarterly dividend by 11%, from 42.5 cents<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/40078219/mondelez-analysts-boost-their-forecasts-after-upbeat-earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener"> to 47 cents per share</a>.

Snacks Giant Mondelez Unwraps $9 Billion Stock Buyback Plan; Stock Gains

Mondelez International, Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) shares are trading lower on Monday. The company agreed to sell 86 million shares of JDE Peet&#8217;s&nbsp;to JAB <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/41421106" rel="noreferrer noopener">for 25.10 euros ($27.16) per share.</a>
In addition, JAB has distributed shares of JDE Peet&#8217;s to over 70 limited partners of JAB Consumer Partners (JCP), notably increasing the free float of JDE Peet&#8217;s. This marks the final distribution of JDE Peet&#8217;s shares to JCP investors.
 JAB is an investment holding company that invests in insurance and consumer-focused industries with attractive long-term dynamics.

JAB Strengthens Hold On Coffee Company JDE Peet's As Mondelez Sells Off 86M Shares

Procter &amp; Gamble Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PG#NYSE">PG</a>) shares are trading lower after the company reported&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;sales of&nbsp;$21.74 billion&nbsp;(-1% Y/Y),&nbsp;missing the analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/b41399117/p-g-announces-fiscal-year-2025-first-quarter-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of&nbsp;$21.91 billion</a>.
Organic sales, which exclude the impacts of foreign exchange and acquisitions and divestitures, increased&nbsp;by 2%.
Organic sales growth was driven by a 1% increase in higher pricing and a 1% rise in organic volume, excluding the effects of acquisitions and divestitures.
Sales in the Beauty segment fell&nbsp;5%, and the Baby, Feminine &amp; Family Care segment declined 2%.
Meanwhile, the Grooming segment sales sales remained flat, while Fabric &amp; Home Care grew 1% and Health Care sales increased&nbsp;2%.
Gross profit remained flat&nbsp;at $11.3 billion. The reported gross margin expanded by 10 basis points to&nbsp;52.1%, and the core gross margin was flat year-over-year.
Gains included 170 basis points from productivity savings and 30 basis points from pricing, offset by 90 basis points from higher commodity costs, 60 basis points from unfavorable mix, and 40 basis points from product reinvestments.
Operating margin expanded 30 basis points to&nbsp;26.7% while operating income for the quarter rose 1%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$5.80 billion.
Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.93 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the analyst consensus of&nbsp;$1.90.</a>
P&amp;G held&nbsp;$12.16 billion&nbsp;in cash and equivalents as of September 30. Operating cash flow for the quarter was&nbsp;$4.3 billion.
The company returned around $4.4&nbsp;billion&nbsp;of value to shareholders via&nbsp;$2.4 billion&nbsp;in dividend payments and&nbsp;$1.9 billion&nbsp;of share repurchases.

Procter & Gamble's Mixed Bag Q1: EPS Exceeds Estimates, Reaffirms Growth Outlook & More

BofA Securities analyst Bryan D. Spillane expresses views on PepsiCo, Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>) mixed third-quarter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PEP/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">results reported on Tuesday</a>.
Today, the company reported adjusted EPS of $2.31, which&nbsp;beat the consensus estimate of $2.29, while revenue of $23.319 billion missed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41225048/pepsico-adjusts-2024-revenue-expectations-after-mixed-q3-performance-and-global-challenges" rel="noreferrer noopener">the consensus estimate of $23.825 billion</a>.
For 2024, PepsiCo expects a low-single-digit increase in organic revenue (previously ~4%) and continues to expect at least an 8% increase in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">core constant currency EPS.</a>
PepsiCo's assumption and guidance imply that 2024 adjusted EPS of at least $8.15 (consensus $8.15) will be a 7% increase year over year.
Spillane notes that the second half of the year typically accounts for over half of total revenue, and the guidance suggests organic growth of -1% to +3% in the fourth quarter.
The analyst writes that PEP is likely relying on higher productivity than initially planned to maintain its reiterated EPS, despite lowering its organic sales guidance.
However, the volume performance in the third quarter indicates a possible need for additional support next year, adds the analyst.
The analyst writes that with remedial actions addressing volume weakness now in place, he expects the stock to perform well if market share improves.
The analyst says that PEP&#8217;s premium valuation of 20x over non-alcoholic beverage peers is justified by its strengthened position and pricing power amid ongoing inflationary pressures.
The analyst maintains the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PEP/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Buy rating and $185 price target.</a>
