Longshoremen are expected to drop their cargo hooks Tuesday, potentially freezing activity at some of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41086120/us-market-soars-after-fed-rate-cut-but-chartist-warns-of-potential-stock-plunge-citing-this-clas">the U.S.&#8217;s busiest ports</a>.
What Happened: According <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/30/business/port-strike-dockworkers.html">to</a> the New York Times, a union showdown on the East and Gulf coasts with their employers could halt billions of dollars <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41097541/amazon-apple-tesla-brace-for-supply-chain-disruptions-as-potential-east-coast-dockworkers-strike">worth of goods</a>, potentially complicating shopping ahead of the holidays.
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) hasn't orchestrated a strike this big since 1977, but its got leverage this time. Recent labor victories by big unions such as the Teamsters and the United Auto Workers (UAW) have <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/10/35492334/gm-uaw-reach-tentative-agreement-potentially-putting-an-end-to-costly-6-week-strike">set a high bar</a>.
Longshoremen are now looking for their slice of the pie.
In addition to demanding a pay raise, longshoremen are also wary of labor-saving tech creeping into their workspace.
With a strike potentially costing the economy billions per day, President Joe Biden could step in using a 1947 law to force the longshoremen back to work.
But Biden, who supported the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/09/34922731/biden-makes-historic-visit-to-auto-worker-picket-line-tells-union-to-you-deserve-raise">UAW strike last year</a>, said Sunday he would <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?538805-1/president-biden-speaks-reporters-dover-air-force-base">not</a> intervene with the longshoremen strike. 
The United States Maritime Alliance, representing the employers, is locked in a months-long standoff with the ILA over wages and benefits.
The union is asking for a $5-an-hour raise for each of the next six years. This would bring their top hourly rate to $69 — a significant bump from the current $39 an hour.
Compare that to their West Coast counterparts, who will be pulling in $60.85 an hour by 2027, and it's easy to see why the ILA feels shortchanged.

Why It Matters: The ILA&#8217;s 47,000 members handle three-fifths of U.S. container traffic.
Many businesses, fearing a potential strike, have scrambled to get goods through the ports before Tuesday.
With some cargo still stranded at sea, delays are inevitable. The backlog could reportedly take weeks to clear, even if the strike is brief. 
Various distributors, including MHW Ltd., fear the strike could affect the Thanksgiving holiday. MHW chief operating officer John Wrenn told the New York Times that sales &#8220;will just be lost because products will not be on the shelves.&#8221;
A different union operates West Coast ports, leaving them unaffected. 
Observers say trucking goods from the West Coast to the East is too expensive to serve as a workaround. 
The ILA has said they won't disrupt work on cruise ships.

Carnival reported quarterly sales of $7.90 billion,&nbsp;up 15.2% year over year, beating the street view of $7.83 billion.

Carnival Q3 Earnings: 15% Topline Growth, Record Operating Income, Guidance Boost And More

RBC analyst Brad Erickson maintained an Outperform rating on Pinterest, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PINS#NYSE">PINS</a>) with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PINS/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">price target of $52</a>.
As per Erickson, Pinterest is a solid social media property, perfect for inspiration and discovery within a somewhat narrow set of topics and product categories. The changes the company is making, such as direct links and the Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) 3p partnership, could drive ad relevance and conversion higher, hence advertiser ROAS despite higher ad load, per the analyst.

Erickson&#8217;s latest look at Pinterest ad load &amp; traffic offers a mixed read into the print.
Positively, general ad commentary remains relatively strong, in line with the analyst&#8217;s recent Small and Midsize Business (SMB) ad checks and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) Google search results, and Amazon ad load still appears strong and improving in secondary categories.
Less positively, YouTube&#8217;s APAC comments could indicate modest headwinds for Pinterest upticking, particularly in the third quarter. Amazon 3p ad load on primary categories declined somewhat p/p, and mobile &amp; desktop user data looks mixed, Ericson noted.
In the bigger picture, the analyst remains constructive about Pinterest&#8217;s structural value creation from the long overdue platform monetization improvement.
Pinterest deserves a premium to the group, given that the company has historically under-monetized its platform, which new management is addressing. Erickson said it is growing and ramping margins more quickly relative to the overall space. The target is attributable to confidence in the 3p ad partnership ramping, higher ad load not negatively impacting engagement, and direct links and better relevance driving ROAS higher. To the degree that the company can reaccelerate MAUs in the U.S., there is likely an upside to the analyst&#8217;s valuation.
Erickson projected second-quarter revenue and adjusted EBITDA of $848.5 million and $182.1 million.
Pinterest stock gained 30% in the last 12 months. Investors can gain exposure to the stock through Vanguard Extended Market ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VXF#NYSE">VXF</a>) and iShares Russell Mid-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWR#NYSE">IWR</a>).

Nvidia Supplier Super Micro Computer Stock Is Down Wednesday, What's Going On?

If you&#39;re interested in broad exposure to the Mid Cap Blend segment of the US equity market, look no further than the Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (ARCA:VO), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 01/26/2004.
The fund is sponsored by Vanguard. It has amassed assets over $63.11 billion, making it one of the largest ETFs attempting to match the Mid Cap Blend segment of the US equity market.
Why Mid Cap Blend
Mid cap companies, with market capitalization in the range of $2 billion and $10 billion, offer investors many things that small and large companies don&#39;t, including less risk and higher growth opportunities. Thus, companies that fall under this category provide a stable and growth-heavy investment.
Typically holding a combination of both growth and value stocks, blend ETFs also demonstrate qualities seen in value and growth investments.
Costs
Since cheaper funds tend to produce better results than more expensive funds, assuming all other factors remain equal, it is important for investors to pay attention to an ETF&#39;s expense ratio.
Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.04%, making it one of the least expensive products in the space.
It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.52%.
Sector Exposure and Top Holdings
Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure that minimizes single stock risk, investors should also look at the actual holdings inside the fund. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

The ETF has added roughly 6.10% so far this year and is up about 24.20% in the last one year (as of 03/25/2024). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $195.66 and $247.32.
The ETF has a beta of 1.08 and standard deviation of 18.78% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 338 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.
Alternatives
Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 1 (Strong Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, VO is an excellent option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend segment of the market. There are other additional ETFs in the space that investors could consider as well.
The iShares Russell Mid-Cap ETF (ARCA:IWR) and the iShares Core S&amp;P Mid-Cap ETF (ARCA:IJH) track a similar index. While iShares Russell Mid-Cap ETF has $32.61 billion in assets, iShares Core S&amp;P Mid-Cap ETF has $83.50 billion. IWR has an expense ratio of 0.19% and IJH charges 0.05%.

Extraordinarily large volume (compared to historical averages) is one indication of unusual options market activity. Volume refers to the total number of contracts traded over a given time period when discussing options market activity. Open interest is the number of unsettled contracts that have been traded but not yet closed by either counterparty. In other words, open interest represents the quantity of contracts that individual parties have written but not yet found a counterparty for (i.e. a buyer finding a seller, or a seller finding a buyer).
Another sign of unusual activity is the trading of a contract with an expiration date in the distant future. Usually, additional time until a contract expires allows more opportunity for it to reach its strike price and grow its time value. Time value is important to consider because it represents the difference between the strike price and the value of the underlying asset. 
Contracts with a strike price far from the underlying price are also considered unusual because they are defined as being "out of the money". This occurs when the underlying price is under the strike price on a call option, or above the strike price on a put option. These trades are made because the underlying asset value is expected to change dramatically in the future, and the buyer or seller can take advantage of a greater profit margin. 
<h2>Understanding Sentiment</h2>
Options are "bullish" when a call is purchased at/near ask price or a put is sold at/near bid price. Options are "bearish" when a call is sold at/near bid price or a put is bought at/near ask price. 
These observations are made without knowing the investor's true intent by purchasing these options contracts. The activity is suggestive of these strategies, but an observer cannot be sure if a bettor is playing the contract outright or if the options bettor is hedging a large underlying position in common stock. For the latter case, bullish options activity may be less meaningful than the exposure a large investor has on their short position in common stock.

The latest round of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/16/07/8248359/terms-of-the-trade-13f-filings">13F filings</a> from institutional investors is out, revealing to the world the stocks that some of the richest and most successful investors have been buying and selling.
<h3>Takeaways From 13F Season</h3>
Investors who follow particular fund managers can easily look up what each was buying and selling in the quarter, but other investors may be more interested in overall themes from 13F filings. The first quarter of 2020 was the worst first quarter in the history of the S&amp;P 500, so investors were particularly interested in how top investors played the dip.

<li>Fund managers were dumping FANG stocks in the first quarter with a handful of exceptions. Tepper bought Netflix and Cooperman bought Facebook</li>
<li>Alphabet was one stock several fund managers were selling in the quarter. Tepper, Cooperman and Soros all reduced their holdings.</li>
<li>Einhorn and Ackman both bought Berkshire, while Buffett himself was buying PNC Financial and little else.</li>
<li>Bank stocks were popular among fund managers in the first quarter after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to 0%. Einhorn bought Goldman Sachs, Cooperman bought JPMorgan and sold Citigroup and Wells Fargo, Buffett sold Goldman Sachs, and Soros sold Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo.</li>

Depending on where one looks, performances for mid-cap exchange-traded funds this year range from solid to spectacular. The SPDR S&amp;P MidCap 400 ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mdy#NYSE">MDY</a>) is solid with a year-to-date gain of 3.1 percent, although that trails the S&amp;P 500.
<h3>The Appeal Of Mid-Cap ETFs</h3>
The WisdomTree MidCap Dividend Fund (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/don#NYSE">DON</a>) qualifies as spectacular with a year-to-date of over 12 percent, or more than triple the returns offered by the S&amp;P 500. Despite those impressive performances, traders are not covering their short positions on mid-cap stocks nearly as rapidly as they are covering bearish bets on large caps.
&ldquo;Average short interest of the constituents of the iShares Russel Top 200 has declined by 25 percent from 1.7 percent to 1.3 percent as of latest count. Meanwhile average short interest of the relatively high constituents of the iShares Russel Mid Cap ETF (the next 800 largest companies by market cap) has declined by relatively less, falling 11 percent, from 4.6 percent to 4.1 percent,&rdquo; said Markit <a href="http://www.markit.com/Commentary/Get/15072016-Equities-Shorts-covering-continues-as-US-equities-surge">in a recent note</a>.

The iShares ETF being referenced above is the $12.8 billion iShares Russell Midcap Index Fund (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iwr#NYSE">IWR</a>). IWR is higher by 8.8 percent year-to-date.
<h3>Why So Shy?</h3>
&ldquo;Perhaps short sellers (on average) expect that large caps have more to run in order to &lsquo;catch up&rsquo; to the performance of midcaps or alternatively that the midcaps have scope to moderate lower,&rdquo; noted Markit.
Within the mid-cap universe, short sellers have targeted consumer discretionary and healthcare names. Those are IWR&#39;s second- and fifth-largest sectors, respectively, combining for over a quarter of the ETF&#39;s weight.
&ldquo;The &lsquo;most shorted&rsquo; stock across the midcaps currently is &lsquo;athleisure&rsquo; clothing retailer Under Armour Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ua#NYSE">UA</a>) with 28.1 percent short interest which has surged higher by almost double since the beginning of April. Short interest has risen and shares have plummeted on <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-underarmor-stock-idUSKCN0X82DD">slower growth concerns</a>,&rdquo; according to Markit.

Credit Suisse Data Shows US Mid Cap Total Flows Continue To Deteriorate, Posts Largest Monthly Outflow Since 2011

The S&amp;P Mid Cap 400 Index (INDEX: MID) hit a new all-time high last week to little fanfare, as attention has been placed on the NASDAQ reaching for the 5,000 level. Despite the lack of hoopla, the index has had a solid year, up 3.5 percent in 2015 and up a whopping 17 percent from the mid-October low.

	There are a number of ETFs that retail investors can put into a portfolio to take advantage of the often-overlooked asset class. As the amount of ETFs continues to grow, it is important to analyze the holdings, fees, volume, etc. of each potential mid-cap ETF. A few of the options are listed below.

	iShares Russell Mid-Cap ETF</h3>

	The iShares Russell Midcap Index Fund (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/iwr#NYSE">IWR</a>) is made up of 842 mid-cap stocks across 11 sectors.

	The top holdings include:

		Kroger Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/kr#NYSE">KR</a>) at 0.54 percent</li>
<li>
		Cigna Corporation (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ci#NYSE">CI</a>) making up 0.49 percent</li>
<li>
		Avago Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/avgo#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) coming in at 0.48 percent</li>
</ul>

	IWR is up 10 percent over the last 12 month and up 5 percent over the last six months. The ETF has an expense ratio of 0.20 percent. The ETF is extremely diverse and will cover all areas of the mid-cap space.

	Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF</h3>

	The Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vo#NYSE">VO</a>) tracks 369 mid-cap companies across 11 sectors.

	The top individual holdings include:

	VO is up 11 percent over the last 12 months and up 6 percent over the last six months. The ETF has an extremely low expense ratio of 0.09 percent. The ETF is similar to IWR with its diversity and low reliance on one position. The lower expense ratio is an attractive feature.

	PowerShares Fundamental Pure Mid-Core Portfolio ETF</h3>

	The PowerShare Dynamic Mid Core Port. (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pxmc#NYSE">PXMC</a>) consists of 156 mid-cap companies across 10 sectors.

	The top holdings include:

		Becton, Dickinson and Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bdx#NYSE">BDX</a>) at 1.7 percent</li>
<li>
		Equity Residential (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eqr#NYSE">EQR</a>) making up 1.6 percent</li>
<li>
		Ameriprise Financial, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/amp#NYSE">AMP</a>) coming in at 1.6 percent</li>

	Over the last 12 months, PXMC is up 12 percent and is up 5 percent over the last six months. The ETF has an expense ratio of 0.39 percent. The fact that PXMC weights its holdings based on fundamentals differentiates it from the first two ETFs, and the performance has been able to slightly outperform the last year.

	The PowerShares Exchange-Traded Fund Trust II (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/xmlv#NYSE">XMLV</a>) provides exposure to 80 mid-cap companies across eight sectors.

	The top individual holdings include:

		HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hcc#NYSE">HCC</a>) making up 1.6 percent</li>
<li>

<li>

	The ETF is up 13 percent over the last 12 months and up 8 percent over the last six months. The ETF has an expense ratio of 0.25 percent. The 80 stocks that make up the portfolio have the lowest realized volatility over the last 12 months from the universe of S&amp;P Midcap 400 Index constituents. Ideally, the ETF should have less volatility versus the overall index.

	WisdomTree Mid-Cap Dividend ETF</h3>

	The WisdomTree MidCap Dividend Fund (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/don#NYSE">DON</a>) is made up of 407 dividend-paying mid-cap companies across 10 sectors.

	The top holdings include:
<ul>
<li>
		Windstream Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/win#NASDAQ">WIN</a>) at 1.3 percent</li>
<li>
		Frontier Communications Corp (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ftr#NASDAQ">FTR</a>) totaling 1.2 percent</li>
<li>
		Coach Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/coh#NYSE">COH</a>) coming in at 1.1 percent</li>

	DON is up 12 percent over the last 12 months and up 5 percent over the last six months. The ETF has an expense ratio of 0.38 percent. The portfolio is weighted based on dividends and rebalanced annually.

	Of the five mid-cap ETFs highlighted, there are several strategies depending on how the investor would like their portfolio weighted. This is one of the great aspects of the growing universe of ETFs.

Mid-Cap ETFs Quietly Performing

With such an abundance of investments options available today, it is easy to overlook certain securities and even an entire asset class. A majority of the buzz lately has been over large-cap stocks outperforming and small-cap stocks lagging. This leads to a large number of investors overlooking the players that fall in the middle: <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/mid-cap">mid-cap stocks</a>.

	Stocks with a market capitalization between $2 and $10 billion fall into the mid-cap asset class. Despite being widely popular, the Vanguard Small-Cap Index Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vb#NYSE">VB</a>) has underperformed its mid-cap peers by 7 percent year-to-date.

	Large-cap stocks are generally viewed as the safest option, as small-caps are considered to carry above-average risk. Mid-cap stocks typically fall in the middle range, with the potential of higher sales-growth than smaller companies can provide, while eliminating some of the risk associated with infancy stage companies.

	The top holdings include:

The holdings are distributed across 10 sectors with consumer cyclical and consumer non-cyclical accounting for 43 percent of the ETF.

	It is important to note that even though the mid-cap stocks have outperformed their smaller counterparts in 2014, there is no guarantee next year will bring the same results. While recognizing the transition between the different asset classes is important to outperforming the overall market, it is also important to have access to a broad range of asset classes to minimize risk and increase diversity.

<div>In the past week, the US market suffered as slight retraction as many corporate earnings reports failed to meet Wall Street expectations. Additionally, general economic uncertainty reared its head in the market, driving investors out of US equities for the week Because of this, all ETFs in the US Equity Style Trend table were down for the week.</div>

<div>Small cap ETFs were hit the hardest, as the iShares Russell 2000 Growth Index (IWO), the iShares Russell 2000 Index (IWM), and the iShares Russell 200 Value Index (IWN) all dropped over 3% in the past week. This follows traditional market behavior as small cap equties tend to react more harshly to swings in the market.</div>

<div>The iShares Russell Midcap Growth Index (IWP), down 1.63%, and the iShares Russell 1000 Growth Index (IWF), down 1.68%, were least effected by the downturn in the market. In the near future, mid to large cap equity ETFs will likely provide more stability and better gains than smaller ETFs as the market remains in flux and succesptible to turn on a variety of daily economic news. </div>

US Equities Fall as Economic Instability Continues

Small cap ETFs are generally made up of investments in companies with less than $1 billion in market capitalization. Small Cap Growth ETFs offer investors diversification throughout a wide range of industries and the potential for very high returns. At the same time, these ETFs tend to move up and down with the market and are subject to high levels of volatility.
US Small Cap Growth ETFs, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 Small Cap Growth Index ETF (IWO), continued to outperform other styles of US Equity Assets with a one week return of 2.66% and a trend score of 13.93%. The small cap growth sector has also outperformed other US Equity Assets over a 52 week period, returning 24.31% in the past year. (See Russell Table)

US Small Cap Growth ETFs Continue Strong Gains

Large Cap Blend ETFs provide access to both growth and value stocks, looking for high returns while hedging that risk with more stable securities. Large Cap ETFs invest across the entire spectrum of the US market. Stocks in the top 70% of the capitalization of the US equity market are defined as large cap.
Despite strong returns, US Large Cap Blend ETFs, including the Russell Large Cap Index (IWB), have underperformed mid cap and small cap ETFs. With a one-year trend score of 8.52%, the Russell Large Cap Index falls towards the bottom of the US Style Return Table as seen below.

Among US Large Cap Blend ETFs the Ryder S&amp;P Equal Weight ETF (RSP) and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) have performed the strongest, offering one-year returns of 18.18% and 17.54% respectively. The ETF in the sector with the highest level of average volume, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 Index, returned 15.13% in the past year, near the middle of the pack.
While US Large Cap Blend ETFs have provided investors with strong returns in recent periods, many in the market believe that the sector is due for a retraction based on overheated valuations. For the time being, investors will likely find better returns elsewhere.

Currently Commodities, Real Estate and US Equity are doing well. Only US Equity is available to Amazon.com 401K Plan participants.
This plan beats the three asset benchmark by virtue of the US asset class choices. If would be a stronger plan with more fixed income choices and an additional asset class.
To summarize, Amazon.com 401K Plan would do well by their employees to consider reviewing their existing funds and adding additional asset classes such as REITs and emerging market stocks.

Online Pioneer Amazon.com Can Expand Its 401K Plan for More Diversification

Converted Organics Inc. (Nasdaq: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/coin#Nasdaq">COIN</a>) announced today that it has begun to receive revenue from the Company's Industrial Wastewater Resources (<a class="ticker" href="/stock/iwr#">IWR</a>) operation at the South Canyon Landfill in Colorado. "We are extremely excited that this project has generated immediate revenue for a project of this size, and at this stage of operation," says Rick McEwen, President and General Manager of Converted Organics Industrial Wastewater Resources. 

McEwen adds, "We look forward to the growing success of this project at the South Canyon Landfill as they continue to process increasing amounts of wastewater, and transition from traditional methods of treating wastewater to full use of our evaporator technology."
