Despite a Washington-Beijing trade truce at May&#8217;s Geneva summit, China just dropped its U.S. Treasury holdings to the lowest level in over 16 years ― and the timing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">couldn't be more telling</a>.



In May, Beijing trimmed its stockpile of American debt to $756.3 billion, shaving off nearly $1 billion from April and marking the third straight month of reductions.



With the latest deflux, China has now slipped to third place among foreign creditors to the U.S., behind Japan and the United Kingdom. It's a far cry from the days when Beijing was America's largest lender, holding more than $1.3 trillion in Treasuries between 2012 and 2016.



China's move to slash its U.S. Treasury holdings is likely more than mere portfolio adjustment—it's a geopolitical signal. Coming on the heels of Trump's aggressive tariff regime, it could be interpreted as a calculated form of financial retaliation, subtly reminding Washington that Beijing holds levers beyond trade. By dumping American debt, China isn't just reshuffling assets—it's likely sending a message to Trump: economic pain can be delivered quietly, through markets, not megaphones.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">From Tariffs To Treasuries: What Sparked China's Move?</h2>



Beijing's latest pullback came just weeks after President Donald Trump shocked global markets by ramping tariffs on Chinese imports up to 155% in April. Stocks wobbled, the dollar took a hit and foreign investors ran for cover—selling $40.8 billion in U.S. debt that month alone.



But May flipped the script. After Trump agreed to slash tariffs by 115 percentage points on China and enter a 90-day negotiation window, confidence returned, at least temporarily. 



Foreign buying of Treasuries bounced back hard, reaching $146 billion in net purchases—the biggest monthly inflow since August 2022.



Still, China didn't follow the crowd.



Even with a shaky trade truce in place, tensions snapped back. Washington hit China with new export restrictions just days after the Geneva talks and Beijing responded by tightening exports of rare earth minerals—vital components in everything from EV batteries to missile systems.



A more subtle message may be embedded in the bond sale itself: China appears to be testing its leverage over the U.S. economy, using Treasuries—the same bonds that fund America's deficits—as a potential pressure point.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trump's Spending Bill Raises Fiscal Alarm, All Eyes On The Fed</h2>



Beyond what foreign investors are doing, America's fiscal burden is growing fast and is causing upward pressure on bond yields. 



Trump's newly signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act—passed on July 4—is set to balloon the federal deficit by $2.7 trillion over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That kind of spending puts fresh strain on government borrowing—and investors are noticing.



The 30-year Treasury yield has climbed back toward 5%, a level that's triggered alarm bells on Wall Street in the past. It raises borrowing costs for everything from mortgages to corporate debt and puts added pressure on a stock market that&#8217;s hovering at all-time highs. 



The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) is down 3% year-to-date, after falling in each of the past four years. 



Trump, meanwhile, hasn't let up on the Federal Reserve. He's ramped up public pressure on Chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates—and has even floated the idea of replacing him before his term ends next May.



The July 30 Fed meeting could bring fireworks. Most market participants and policymakers currently expect no change to rates, but dissent is brewing. Fed Governors Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller have already signaled their readiness to vote for a rate cut, even as inflation data remain mixed.



Powell is walking a tightrope. With the bond market already flashing signs of stress, any misstep in Fed policy may risk triggering deeper summer volatility across markets.

He warned that such a move could lead to a temporary pullback in altcoins, creating ideal dip-buying opportunities, a classic sign of capital rotating back into Bitcoin.



CrediBULL Crypto analyzed analyzed Bitcoin's Elliott Wave structure, noting that the 4th subwave correction appears near completion. 



According to him, the impulsive 5th wave, typically a strong upward move, is still in play, hinting at an imminent breakout once this consolidation resolves.

Wall Street extended its historic rally this week, with major benchmarks such as the S&amp;P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 hitting fresh all-time highs, as strong corporate earnings, robust economic data and AI-fueled tech momentum continued <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">to boost investor optimism.</a>



Big banks beat earnings estimates, setting a strong tone for the season. Airlines and consumer-focused giants also impressed.

Shares of Opendoor Technologies, Inc. The surge has been driven by fresh interest from retail investors and the endorsement of EMJ Capital founder Eric Jackson.



What To Know: Jackson laid out his reasons for backing Opendoor in a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/small-cap/25/07/46459498/opendoor-is-the-next-carvana-stock-surges-43-on-activist-investors-take-on-company-ill-saddle-up"> social media post </a>on Monday, saying "it could be a 100-bagger over the next few years."

He identified several positive industry and company-specific trends, even suggesting the potential for the stock to increase one hundredfold in the years ahead.



"Let's talk upside math. If $OPEN goes to $12B in revenue in a few years (already the Bloomberg consensus estimate)… And if the market gives them a 5x EV/revenue multiple again (as it did at the 2021 peak)…That's a stock price of $82. 100x from here," Jackson wrote.&nbsp;



Since his post, the stock price has about doubled, closing at $1.65 on Thursday.&nbsp;



A central point of Jackson's thesis is that with Zillow Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/Z#NASDAQ">Z</a>) and Redfin Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDFN#NASDAQ">RDFN</a>) having stepped away from iBuying in the last few years, Opendoor now effectively dominates the market segment.&nbsp;



The company's iBuyer model, which relies on technology to buy homes directly for cash, perform basic renovations and resell them, was once a popular approach among major real estate firms, but most have retreated to focus on other areas.



Jackson <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/opendoor-stock-jumps-another-10-as-retail-piles-in-on-potential-100x-rally-in-next-few-years-202539566.html">told </a>Yahoo Finance on Thursday that investor sentiment could play a major role in the stock's reversal.&nbsp;



&#8220;I think it just shows how mispriced the stock has been over the last, I don&#8217;t know, year and a bit,&#8221; Jackson said.&nbsp;



&#8220;The valuation was so off that if people did start to change their opinions, this thing could move a lot, not just double or triple or quadruple.&#8221;



OPEN Stock Price: According to data from<a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw"> Benzinga Pro</a>, Opendoor Technologies stock was up 20% at $1.98 at the time of publication Friday.

Trump Media &amp; Technology Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMTG#NASDAQ">TMTG</a>), the parent of Truth Social, holds a material stake in Trump-themed tokens and has promoted crypto-friendly payment processors on its platform.



In 2024, campaign finance filings revealed Donald Trump&#8216;s own crypto holdings, which included ETH and various Trump-themed meme coins received from supporters. 



Trump also declared support for Bitcoin mining and stablecoin innovation during campaign events earlier this year.



Thumzup&#8217;s portfolio allocation expands beyond Bitcoin to include XRP and DOGE, both of which have strong retail investor bases and growing adoption in payments and remittances. 



The decision to include USDC indicates a hedge toward on-chain dollar exposure amid crypto market volatility.



The board&#8217;s approval makes Thumzup one of the few publicly traded companies to formally adopt a multi-asset crypto treasury strategy that includes meme coins, stablecoins, and Layer-1 tokens. 



The firm says it aims to "create significant value for TZUP shareholders" through strategic exposure to the evolving crypto market.

Donald Trump Jr-Backed Thumzup Media Approves $250M In Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, SOL, Dogecoin Treasury Purchases

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO Elon Musk launched another attack on President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein client list row amid rising discontentment over the case.



What Happened: The billionaire took to social media platform X to share his thoughts on the case after Trump deemed the Epstein case a "hoax."



"Wow I can't believe Epstein killed himself before realizing it was all a hoax," Musk said in his post on Thursday.

However, the billionaire was also seen coming to the defense of the President after WSJ reported <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/trump-jeffrey-epstein-birthday-letter-we-have-certain-things-in-common-f918d796?st=eGnQWo&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink">on</a> Thursday, claiming to have reviewed a 2003 lewd birthday letter to Epstein by Trump for Epstein's 50th birthday as part of an album collected by Epstein's wife, Ghislaine Maxwell. Trump has since <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/07/46486660/trump-directs-pam-bondi-to-release-more-epstein-documents-subject-to-court-approval-threatens-legal-action-against-wsj-over-epstein-letter">threatened to sue</a> WSJ over the claims.



Musk prompted Grok, asking the xAI model to verify whether the letter was false or true in a reply to a post on X. The billionaire then reposted Grok's explanation on the claim, which Grok identified as false.

Why It Matters: The news comes as Musk had <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/07/46270547/elon-musk-reignites-jeffrey-epstein-client-list-row-adding-fuel-to-the-feud-with-trump">reignited the Epstein row</a>, calling on the Trump administration to release the files as tensions rose between the pair following disagreements over the Big Beautiful Bill law.



In what could be perceived as an anti-Musk move, Trump recently appointed Jonathan Morrison, a Tesla critic, as his nominee to lead the NHTSA. Morrison had called for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46434613/elon-musks-tesla-could-face-stricter-oversight-as-trumps-nhtsa-pick-targets-autonomous-driving-cannot-sit-back">tougher oversight of autonomous vehicles</a> in the U.S., which could create hurdles for Tesla's robotaxi ambitions.



The company's FSD tech has already been under scrutiny by the NHTSA for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/06/46067027/tesla-robotaxi-faces-nhtsa-scrutiny-over-traffic-violations-during-austin-launch">possible traffic violations</a> committed by the Robotaxis during Austin's launch event in June.



Trump's Big Beautiful Bill, which gets rid of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46289556/trumps-tax-bill-axes-the-7500-ev-credit-heres-how-you-can-still-claim-it">the $7,500 EV credit</a>, also effectively makes the ZEV credits, which earned Tesla <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46258669/tesla-made-2-76-billion-from-zev-credits-in-2024-in-us-but-trumps-tax-bill-just-killed-this-revenue-stream">billions in revenue last year</a>, redundant by relaxing CAFE or Corporate Average Fuel Economy norms.



The norms dictate that each car should drive a certain number of miles on a gallon of fuel. Violating the norms by failing to meet the figures would result in hefty fines for automakers.



With relaxed norms, automakers wouldn't have to worry about violating the norms due to decreased fuel economy requirements, buying a lesser amount of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46385263/tesla-rival-rivian-could-lose-a-major-revenue-stream-due-to-a">ZEV credits from companies</a> like Tesla to comply.



Elsewhere, Tesla has also been under fire for Musk's political activities with the America Party, with experts like Gerber Kawasaki's co-founder Ross Gerber claiming that the company has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46337215/tesla-is-basically-hijacked-by-elon-musk-says-ross-gerber-calling-it-completely-ridiculous-america-party-is-the-worst-news-for-tsla">been "hijacked" by Musk</a>.
