Abercrombie &amp; Fitch (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANF#NYSE">ANF</a>) might have just executed one of the trendier turnarounds in recent retail history. Shares of the company jumped more than 30% on Wednesday after it posted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45643292/abercrombie-fitch-shares-surge-but-lowers-outlook-despite-q1-beat-due-to-tariffs">better-than-expected first-quarter results</a> and upped its full-year sales forecast range. 
Vintage T-shirts and printed jeans may be hot with Gen Z, but Abercrombie&#8217;s bottom line was the real seasonal surprise.
Yet, despite the eye-catching move in the stock, the impact on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">retail-focused ETFs</a> was less runway-ready.
The SPDR S&amp;P Retail ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XRT#NYSE">XRT</a>), ProShares Online Retail ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ONLN#NYSE">ONLN</a>), and Amplify Online Retail ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IBUY#NYSE">IBUY</a>) barely flinched in the aftermath of Abercrombie's earnings beat. The reason is simple: Abercrombie &amp; Fitch doesn't carry enough weight in these ETFs to move the needle.
It&#8217;s a textbook instance of a top solo performer in a large lineup. Abercrombie is performing well, but retail ETFs are typically diversified among dozens of names, several of which aren&#8217;t exhibiting the same level of momentum.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Small-Cap Funds Could Be The True Winners</h1>
Investors in search of ETF vehicles that truly experienced the glow of Abercrombie&#8217;s breakout may wish to look at the small-cap category. Vehicles such as the iShares Core S&amp;P Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IJR#NYSE">IJR</a>) and the Vanguard Small-Cap Value ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VBR#NYSE">VBR</a>) provide comparatively higher exposure to the apparel retailer.
Abercrombie is a top-10 holding in IJR, and its outsized move can give a modest lift to fund performance, though still dampened by the broader small-cap environment. VBR also holds Abercrobmie, indicating the company&#8217;s reclassification as a value stock amid strengthening fundamentals.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What Abercrombie&#8217;s Numbers Mean For The Sector</h1>
The firm reported first-quarter net sales of $1.10 billion, surpassing forecasts of $1.07 billion. Comparable sales for its Hollister brand jumped 23% — a testament that recent product refreshes are resonating among teens and pre-teens. However, it also reduced full-year profit guidance due to continuing tariff pressures.
Abercrombie&#8217;s refusal to abandon its store growth strategy and increase marketing for the summer quarter implies that management thinks the brand is still trending, despite macroeconomic conditions remaining patchy.
Shoppers are still willing to pay for brands that are getting the product-market fit right.
Abercrombie&#8217;s rally might not have put a shockwave into broad retail ETFs, but it&#8217;s a reminder that stock-specific victories in the apparel sector can be harbingers of larger style changes, both in consumer activity and in ETF exposure tactics.
Abercrombie&#8217;s profits remind us that apparel retail is not a homogeneous investment category. Though the brand&#8217;s rebound has minimal impact on most mainstream ETFs, it can be enriching quietly in small-cap and value funds. 
For ETF investors, the takeaway might be: fashion trends happen overnight, but being fashionable with your portfolio means taking a closer peek at what&#8217;s inside the fund.

Overexposure to Large-Cap Growth Stocks Isn&#8217;t a Good Idea
Several Redditors pointed out that VOO and QQQ heavily overlap, meaning the investor&#8217;s portfolio is not as diversified as he thinks.
&#8220;You&#8217;re just long all the same s&#8211;t, large-cap equities. You want multiple return streams in case large-cap equities have a drawdown. If you work a job, own a house, and own equities, you are triple long on the same bet that would destroy you as all are affected by a recession,&#8221; a commenter says.
A Redditor pointed out that a mix of large-cap stocks isn&#8217;t a complete retirement portfolio, and suggested other assets to balance it.
&#8220;Large-cap U.S. stocks can be a great investment, but they&#8217;re not a complete retirement portfolio. Other assets should be included, such as smaller-cap U.S. stocks, international stocks, and bonds,&#8221; the Redditor wrote.
While not against big tech, this commenter recommended the poster add non-tech exposure in his portfolio.
&#8220;I don't see picking high-quality companies that are in the index as redundant, you're overweighting the highest quality companies in the index and which drive its returns. I would look for maybe one high-quality non-big tech name. I love the credit rating agencies (S&amp;P and [Moody's (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/mco#NYSE">MCO</a>)]), but there are others, the three large credit card companies too,&#8221; he said.

Stick to Index Funds
Many advised the investor to drop the individual stocks he holds since they're already covered in VOO and QQQ, creating unnecessary concentration.
&#8220;Remove all redundancies and focus on VOO (almost everything you own is in VOO),&#8221; a Reddit user suggested.
&#8220;Good that you&#8217;re making an effort to invest, but there&#8217;s a lot of redundancy here. The Mag 7 already makes up a huge portion of VOO, why do you feel that you need to be even more extended in those stocks? If you really want to stock-pick on the side, I&#8217;d recommend focusing on lesser-known stocks (not penny stocks) that aren&#8217;t heavily weighted in the S&amp;P 500 (preferably not in it at all),&#8221; a commenter advised.
Reinforcing the idea that stock-picking isn&#8217;t adding value if the stocks are already in the ETF he has, this Redditor suggested the poster go all in in VOO or diversify more.
&#8220;I&#8217;d diversify some. VOO's major holdings are already included in the individual stocks you're holding. On Tuesday&#8217;s CNBC &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/11/19/final-trades-nasdaq-d-r-horton-crowdstrike-and-the-ijr.html">Halftime Report Final Trades</a>,&#8221; Josh Brown of Ritholtz Wealth Management named Nasdaq, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NDAQ#NASDAQ">NDAQ</a>) as his final trade.
On Oct. 25, Nasdaq reported third-quarter revenue growth of 22% year-on-year to $1.15 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $1.17 billion. The financial services company reported an adjusted EPS of 74 cents, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of 69 cents.
Jason Snipe of Odyssey Capital Advisors said D.R. Horton, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DHI#NYSE">DHI</a>) is down 17% and he likes this entry point.
On Oct. 29, D.R. Horton reported fourth-quarter results. Sales fell 5% year-over-year to $10.0 billion, missing the consensus of $10.2 billion. Net sales orders increased 1% to 19,035 homes and decreased 2% in value at $7.1 billion.

Jim Lebenthal of Cerity Partners picked iShares Core S&amp;P Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IJR#NYSE">IJR</a>).
Stephanie Link of Hightower Advisors said CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRWD#NASDAQ">CRWD</a>) is still down 10% from its highs.
CrowdStrike will release financial results for its fiscal third quarter 2025 ended Oct. 31, after the closing bell on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Analysts expect the company to report quarterly earnings of 81 cents per share on revenue of $983.05 million.

According to JPMorgan analyst Jason Hunter, small-cap stocks may finally be ready to outperform their mega-cap tech peers. This may be good news for investors in the iShares Core S&amp;P Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IJR#NYSE">IJR</a>), the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) and the Vanguard Small Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VB#NYSE">VB</a>)
But will this shift be the dawn of a new era, or just a fleeting moment in the spotlight?

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Russell 2000 Sets Bullish Targets</h2>
Hunter points to a "bullish pattern progression" forming in 2024 as the Russell 2000 climbed from a multi-quarter base. Small caps have broken through the 2282-2299 resistance zone, making 2432-2486 the next short-term goal, and the move has shown no signs of losing steam yet. The recent rally in small-cap stocks, especially in the Russell 2000 Index, seems to be moving closer to 2021 cycle highs, which could mean a big shift in market dynamics.
For now, the index stays decisively bullish. As long as it holds above the 2260 post-election breakaway gap, Hunter sees the bulls maintaining control, with potential support anchored around the 2100s, courtesy of the 200-day moving average and October's breakout zone.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Small Cap Vs. NASDAQ 100: A New Market Leader?</h2>
According to Hunter, the Russell 2000's recent moves aren't just about technical strength – they're about a potential regime change.

Hunter calls this a "tentative rotation to more cyclically sensitive groups." This trend, he believes, could continue into 2025 if the Russell/NASDAQ ratio breaks out decisively this quarter.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What's Driving Small-Cap Strength?</h2>
Even before the election-driven rally in U.S. equities, post-September FOMC price action had already put a bullish wind at the back of small caps. Hunter notes that small caps have consistently held key supports, including the October channel and moving averages, creating a setup for continued gains.
The Russell 2000's next targets include 2585, derived from the recent ascending triangle pattern. If the index clears these levels, it could signal a more sustainable trend favoring cyclicals over mega-cap tech. But a reversal back below these supports could be a sign that the small-cap rally is just a temporary phenomenon.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cyclicals In Control – For Now</h2>
Hunter's outlook stays cautiously optimistic, but he warns that the future performance of small caps versus tech hinges on whether they can maintain these breakout levels. While he sees continued bullish momentum into early 2025, Hunter emphasizes that tracking the Russell/NASDAQ ratio is key to confirming any real change in market leadership.
If this trend holds, 2024 could mark a major shift back to small caps and cyclicals. For now, though, it's up to the Russell 2000 to prove this rally is more than a fleeting burst of strength.

WisdomTree senior economist Professor Jeremy Siegel offered a candid take, expressing surprise at the Fed's bold move. &#8220;I&#8217;ll have to say, I am surprised. I was saying of course I wanted 50, you know I even wanted more, but I didn&#8217;t think he was going to do it.&#8221;

Home Depot recently agreed to a settlement of almost $2 million to resolve allegations that it overcharged customers at checkout. The lawsuit, filed by prosecutors from six California counties, accused the retailer of "scanner violations," where the prices at checkout were higher than the advertised prices. The case was brought to the San Diego County Superior Court, reported NBC News.

CNBC Halftime Report Final Trades: Target, The Home Depot, iShares Core S&P Small-Cap ETF

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/09/13/final-trades-tesla-interactive-brokers-suncor-energy-and-the-ijr.html">Halftime Report Final Trades</a>,&#8221; Bryn Talkington of Requisite Capital Management said Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) continues to have some of the highest call premium in the market.
Tesla has made its 100 millionth 4680 cell to be used inside its Cybertruck vehicle, the company said on Saturday. The Austin, Texas-based company announced the milestone on the social media platform X. 
"Produced our 100 millionth 4680 cell across all our factories!," the company wrote, with an adjoining image of a Tesla-made humanoid robot holding up the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40867760/elon-musk-reacts-as-tesla-makes-100-millionth-4680-cells-enough-to-produce-over-73-500-cybertrucks"> landmark 100 millionth cell.</a>

Joseph M. Terranova of Virtus Investment Partners said look for Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IBKR#NASDAQ">IBKR</a>) to push well above its May high level of $129.
On Sept. 9, UBS analyst Brennan Hawken maintained Interactive Brokers with a Buy rating and raised the price target from $145 to $155.

CNBC Halftime Report Final Trades: Tesla, Interactive Brokers Group, Suncor Energy, iShares Core S&P Small-Cap ETF

Small cap stocks are poised for a strong rally, according to Kevin Dreyer, co-CIO of Value at Gabelli Funds.
In a recent CNBC <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9u3gs7uztA">interview</a>, Dreyer, who oversees the Gabelli Asset Fund (GABAX), emphasized that small caps have &#8220;a long room to run&#8221; and are increasingly becoming an attractive option for investors looking to diversify their portfolios.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">From Large Caps To Small Caps: The Shift Began In Early July</h1>
Dreyer noted that while growth stocks have dominated the markets for some time, a shift began to emerge in early July. 
"We are long-time value investors, and growth has really led the markets for some time now. But we started to see this rotation in early July," Dreyer explained.
This change is closely tied to recent actions by the Federal Reserve, which will soon start cutting interest rates. "Now this was in line with what we all are seeing now — the Fed finally cutting rates, and we&#8217;re seeing small-caps and value start to do better."

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Small Caps: Trading At &#8216;Massive Discount&#8217; To Large Cap Counterparts</h1>
The renewed interest in small caps comes as they are trading at a substantial discount compared to their large-cap counterparts. 
"Right now, they trade at a massive discount to their large-cap peers," Dreyer highlighted, suggesting that this could be an ideal time for investors to consider adding small caps to their portfolios.
Dreyer's optimistic view is also supported by the recent performance of the Russell 2000, a key index for small-cap stocks, which seems on track to close higher. Popular ETFs tracking the index closely include the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), the Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VTWO#NYSE">VTWO</a>) and the Avantis U.S Small Cap Equity ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVSC#NYSE">AVSC</a>).
Though they don&#8217;t track the Russell 2000 index, the iShares Core S&amp;P Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IJR#NYSE">IJR</a>) and the Vanguard Small Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VB#NYSE">VB</a>) are other popular ways to get investment exposure to small-cap equity.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Small Caps Still Have A &#8216;Long Way To Go&#8217;</h1>
"By and large, we&#8217;ve been buying more small caps lately, and we think they&#8217;ve got a long way to go," Dreyer added, indicating that the current market environment could present a lucrative opportunity for those looking to capitalize on undervalued assets.
