Australia&#8217;s S&amp;P/ASX 200 was down 0.21% at 8,547.40, led by losses in the IT, Healthcare, and Telecoms Services sectors.

China&#8217;s Shanghai Composite was down 0.75% at 3,377.00, and Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 fell 0.72% to 3,864.18.

Oil prices surged over 7% on Friday, hitting multi-month highs after Israel struck Iran&#8217;s nuclear sites, prompting retaliation and fears of supply disruption.
Natural gas rose 1.03% to $3.529.
Gold traded higher by 1.24% to $3,444.40, Silver rose 0.54% to $36.493, and Copper fell 1.90% to $4.7440.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">US Futures</h2>
At 05:45 AM ET, Dow Jones futures were down 1.14%, the S&amp;P 500 declined 1.19%, and the Nasdaq 100 was down 1.48%.
U.S. stock futures fell after Israel&#8217;s strike on Iran raised Middle East tensions, spiking oil prices and boosting energy and defense stocks.
On Thursday, June 12, U.S. markets ended higher as optimism over artificial intelligence lifted investor sentiment. The S&amp;P 500 gained ground, led by a surge in Oracle shares after the company raised its outlook on strong AI-related demand. Gains in tech and gold mining stocks offset worries over Middle East tensions and a decline in Boeing shares. Softer inflation and labor data boosted hopes for an interest rate cut.
According to the economic data, U.S. producer prices rose 0.1% in May, below the 0.2% forecast, after a revised 0.2% drop in April. Initial jobless claims held at 248,000, above expectations of 240,000.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors advanced Thursday, led by utilities, tech, and health care, while communication services and consumer discretionary lagged.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Forex</h2>
At 05:45 AM ET, the U.S. Dollar Index gained 0.45% to 98.31, USD/JPY was up 0.41% to 144.05, and USD/AUD rose 0.82% to 1.5430.
The dollar rallied Friday as investors sought safe havens after Israel&#8217;s strikes on Iran triggered retaliation.

Global Markets Slide As Iran-Israel Conflict Heats Up, Oil Soars

As Donald Trump approaches six months into his second presidential term, four foreign markets he vowed to penalize with heavy tariffs have not only withstood the threat, they've outpaced the S&amp;P 500 and America&#8217;s biggest tech giants <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">by a wide margin.</a>
Since Jan. 20, 2025 — Trump's inauguration day — exchange-traded funds tracking Mexican, Canadian, eurozone and Chinese stocks have posted significant gains.
Such performance defied Wall Street&#8217;s overly pessimistic expectations at the start of the year, especially as these regions were seen as directly damaged by Trump's protectionist agenda. 
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Equities in Mexico, Canada, Europe and China Defy Trump's Tariff Threats</h1>
The iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWW#NYSE">EWW</a>) surged 28%, the iShares Large-Cap China ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) rose 21%, the iShares MSCI Eurozone ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZU#NYSE">EZU</a>) gained 20%, and the iShares MSCI Canada ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWC#NYSE">EWC</a>) is up 11%.
Ironically, these four economies — responsible for the bulk of last year's trillion-dollar U.S. trade deficit — were key targets in the new administration's push to rebalance trade.
In contrast, the S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>), has remained flat. 
Meanwhile, a widely followed basket of tech giants struggled to keep pace. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>) — which tracks the performance of Microsoft Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NYSE">MSFT</a>), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) — declined by 3.4% over the same period.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Markets Reversed Course After Trump&#8217;s Swearing-In</h1>
Leading up to Inauguration Day, the trajectory of global markets told a starkly different story. From Election Day on Nov. 5 through Jan. 20, investors moved defensively on regions perceived to be in Trump's crosshairs.
The Mexican ETF lost 6.5%, China's declined 5.8%, and eurozone and Canadian stocks treaded water. 
Meanwhile, the S&amp;P 500 rose 4.6%, and the tech-heavy Magnificent Seven soared 15%, buoyed by artificial intelligence euphoria. 
But the moment Trump reentered the Oval Office, the narrative shifted. Markets began reacting not just to political headlines but to tangible changes in fiscal and trade policy. 
The result: U.S. equities stalled, mega-cap tech lost momentum, and capital rotated toward the markets that had initially been expected to struggle under Trump&#8217;s second term.
One of the most striking reversals was Tesla.
Shares of the EV-maker had soared more than 70% between the election and inauguration, fueled by speculation that Elon Musk's collaboration with the Trump administration — via the Department of Government Efficiency — would have given his companies (also including SpaceX) inside access to major federal contracts.
But the alliance quickly soured, and Tesla's stock began a sharp downward spiral. 
Musk exited the DOGE in May and began openly clashing with Trump over fiscal priorities. Tesla shares have since plunged 25%, wiping out post-election gains. 
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">How The Dollar Slump Helped Flip Global Markets</h1>
Part of the market reversal that has occurred since January 2025 can be attributed to a sharp weakening in the dollar.
On Jan. 14, just days ahead of Trump's inauguration, the U.S. dollar index was at 110 — its strongest level since late 2022.
Fast forward six months, and the same index has slumped by 11%, hitting its lowest level in over three years.
This dollar drop is no coincidence. It reflects a growing market rethink around the U.S. relative economic strength, or what analysts call &#8220;American exceptionalism.&#8221;
Tariff tensions, a first-quarter recession, Moody's downgrade of the U.S. credit outlook and concerns over Trump's unfunded spending have eroded trust in the dollar's safe-haven role.
In aggregate, these dynamics have eroded confidence in the dollar as a safe-haven store of value, especially compared to equities in countries seen as "Trump's rivals."
The relative underperformance of U.S. markets and the dollar is forcing investors to reconsider a long-held assumption: that the U.S. economy and its markets would always lead during global uncertainty.
Foreign markets, once seen as fragile in the face of U.S. pressure, have emerged as relative winners, while America&#8217;s internal fractures raise doubts about long-term macro stability.
For now, markets have made their judgment: the real trade shock isn't abroad, it's at home.

On Wednesday, June 11, U.S. markets ended lower. The S&amp;P 500 slipped as investors grew wary over Middle East tensions and a reported embassy evacuation. A mild inflation report eased fears about tariff-driven price hikes, boosting hopes for future rate cuts.
Despite a tentative U.S.-China trade deal, skepticism lingered. Most sectors ended lower, with Amazon and Nvidia weighing heavily on the market.
According to economic data, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported annual inflation at 2.4% in May, with core inflation steady at 2.8%, both slightly below expectations.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower Wednesday, led by losses in materials, communication services, and consumer discretionary, while energy and utilities closed higher.
The Dow closed almost flat at 42,865.77, the S&amp;P 500 declined 0.27% to 6,022.24, and the Nasdaq slid 0.50% to 19,615.88.

According to economic data, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased to 98.8 in May, up from 95.8 in April and surpassing expectations of 95.9.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended higher Tuesday, led by energy, health care, and consumer discretionary, while industrials closed lower against the broader trend.
The Dow closed higher by 0.25% at 42,866.87, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.55% to 6,038.81, and the Nasdaq rose 0.63% to 19,714.99.

Economic data showed that U.S. wholesale inventories increased 0.2% in April to $908.7 billion, while consumer inflation expectations for the year dropped to 3.2% in May from 3.6%.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors fell Monday, led by utilities, financials, and consumer staples. However, consumer discretionary and materials stocks rose against the trend.
The Dow closed flat at 42,761.76, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.09% to 6,005.88, and the Nasdaq rose 0.31% to 19,591.24.

On Tuesday, Japan&#8217;s Nikkei 225 closed 0.30% higher at 38,201.50, led by gains in the Real Estate, Banking, and Textile sectors.
Australia&#8217;s S&amp;P/ASX 200 was up 0.84% at 8,587.20, led by gains in the Consumer Discretionary, IT, and Financials sectors.
India&#8217;s Nifty 50 was down 0.01% at 25,102.75, and the Nifty 500 rose 0.03% to 23,339.40.
China&#8217;s Shanghai Composite was down 0.44% at 3,384.82, and Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 declined 0.51% to 3,865.47.
Hong Kong&#8217;s Hang Seng closed the session 0.08% lower at 24,162.87.

The European STOXX 50 index was down 0.15%.
Germany&#8217;s DAX index declined 0.55%.
France&#8217;s CAC 40 rose 0.01%.
U.K.&#8217;s FTSE 100 index traded higher by 0.42%.

Crude Oil WTI was trading higher by 0.37% at $65.53/bbl, and Brent was up 0.37% at $67.32/bbl.
Oil prices rose amid U.S.-China trade optimism, Saudi supply cuts to China, and OPEC+ plans, with Brent reaching its highest since April.
Natural gas fell 0.58% to $3.614.
Gold traded lower by 0.14% to $3,350.20, Silver slid 0.10% to $36.750, and Copper fell 1.08% to $4.8720.
Gold prices fell as risk appetite improved amid progress in U.S.-China trade talks. Softer haven demand and a stronger dollar pressured metals despite recent geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

Dow Jones futures were down 0.04%, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.08%, and the Nasdaq 100 was up 0.10%.
