Donald Trump made this a centerpiece of his campaign for a second term, suggesting that he could get oil and gas producers to turn on the spigots and drive the prices of gasoline below $2.
Judging by last week&#8217;s address to Congress, it is not an idea the President seems likely to drop.
A lot of oil and gas executives wish he would.
&#8220;Drill, Baby, Drill&#8221; and cheap gas is a cool campaign theme. It is a disaster for profit margins at small to midsize oil and gas producers.
Sustained high levels of production would destroy many of these companies.
The industry has been down this road before and has no desire to go there again.
As Pioneer Natural Resources CEO Scott Sheffield said last year when the topic first arose at a campaign rally, &#8220;No company wants to risk another price collapse. We are disciplined now because we&#8217;ve learned from past cycles.&#8221;
The big companies are not fans of the idea either. During the period between the election and inauguration, the President of Exxon&#8217;s (Ticker: XOM) upstream division, Liam Mallon, told Bloomberg, &#8220;I think a radical change is unlikely because the vast majority, if not everybody, is primarily focused on the economics of what they&#8217;re doing.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re going to see anybody in the drill, baby, drill mode. I really don&#8217;t.&#8221;
While the industry may resist, it is safe to say the President is going to push the point.
What &#8220;Drill, Baby, Drill&#8221; is likely to accomplish is touching off a wave of oil patch merger and acquisition activity.
If we do begin to see large production increases coupled with a slowdown in economic activity because of policy decisions, smaller companies are going to struggle.
Just as we saw in the banking industry over the past 30 years, scale and size are going to be primary determinants of profits.
The bigger you are, the more likely you will be to stay profitable in the era of &#8220;Drill, Baby, Drill.&#8221;
The smart play is going to be for smaller companies to look for a larger partner.
The smarter play is to look for companies that are attractive targets that would be good buys to add attractive assets and gain scale but are capable of growing on a standalone basis.
Epsilon Energy (Ticker: EPSN) is a perfect example of a smaller energy company that will allow investors to have the best of both worlds.
Epsilon Energy Ltd. is a debt-free independent energy company focused on natural gas and oil production, with core assets in the Northeast Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale, the Permian Basin, and Alberta, Canada. The company maintains a strong balance sheet with $8.8 million in cash and $45 million in undrawn revolver capacity, providing financial flexibility for growth and shareholder returns. With stable midstream revenues, low-cost natural gas production, and high-margin oil upside in the Permian and Alberta, EPSN presents a balanced mix of stability and growth potential.
EPSN has a core position in the Marcellus, one of the lowest-cost natural gas basins in the U.S. The company holds 5,142 net acres with 139 producing wells and a 35% stake in the Auburn Gas Gathering System, which provides stable midstream revenues.
The company also has 400,000-500,000 ft. of undeveloped inventory they can bring online as natural gas prices improve.
A relaxation of regulations that allows for new pipeline capacity to be added in the region would be an enormous plus for Epsilon.
Epsilon&#8217;s expansion into the Permian Basin is a game-changer. The company has poured $38 million into its Ector County, TX position, shifting its production mix toward high-margin oil. It&#8217;s already seeing strong results, with seven producing wells and a massive runway of 30-40 future drilling locations.
More importantly, this move diversifies EPSN away from natural gas price volatility. Natural gas has been a rough ride lately, but oil demand remains resilient. If prices remain steady, Epsilon&#8217;s forecasted 140%+ growth in liquids production could drive significant cash flow expansion.
Epsilon has maintained a disciplined approach to capital allocation, balancing strategic growth investments with consistent shareholder returns.
A significant portion of cash flow was directed toward the Permian Basin, where it is aggressively expanding its oil-weighted production.
20% was allocated to its core Marcellus asset, supporting ongoing development in one of the lowest-cost natural gas basins in the country.
The company also invested $2.6 million in its newly formed Alberta joint venture, a move designed to open long-term growth opportunities in a promising Canadian oil and gas play.
Beyond growth initiatives, EPSN has remained committed to returning capital to shareholders. The company paid out $5.5 million in dividends.
$2.2 million was allocated to stock buybacks, increasing the value of remaining shares.
In March 2024, EPSN authorized a new buyback program for up to 2.2 million shares, demonstrating continued confidence in its own undervalued stock.

<li>RSI on the chart shows the stock market is oversold.&nbsp; Oversold markets tend to bounce.</li>
<li>The chart shows the selloff yesterday was on higher volume.&nbsp; This indicates that there was mild conviction in the selloff.&nbsp; The volume needed to be higher than it was to wash out the sellers – this indicates a high probability of another leg down.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
<li>The chart shows the stock market is below the 200 day moving average.&nbsp; We previously shared with you:</li>

<ul>
<li>The 200 day moving average is very powerful, and all investors should pay attention to it.</li>
<li>The reason the 200 day moving average is so powerful is because legions of investors believe in it and act on it, and the media publicizes it.</li>
<li>Other than the deeply held myth, the 200 day moving average does not have any special power.&nbsp; Afterall, why not a 190 day or 210 day moving average?</li>
<li>Rigorous analysis shows that the 200 day average by itself has no magical power.</li>
<li>Legions of investors buy stocks when the stock market pulls back to the 200 day moving average because they erroneously consider the 200 day moving average as a major support.&nbsp; There is no analytically valid basis for this myth.</li>
<li>Legions of investors also sell stocks when the stock market breaks below the 200 day moving average.&nbsp; Again, there is no analytical basis for this belief.</li>
<li>Below are extremely important points for prudent investors to fully grasp. 
<ul>
<li>During President Trump's first term, the stock market had a Trump put.&nbsp; In plain English, a Trump put meant that Trump did not allow a significant drop in the stock market.</li>
<li>Every time the stock market started to drop during his first term, Trump jumped into action.  For example, in December 2018, when the stock market started falling on the Fed raising interest rates, Trump relentlessly berated Fed Chair Powell.  Ultimately, Powell reversed course.  Powell's reversal caused the stock market to start a mega party. In the process, Powell sowed the seeds of inflation.</li>
<li>When Trump was re-elected, it was natural for investors to believe that once again the stock market had a Trump put.&nbsp; Prudent investors need to remember that investors suffer from recency bias. &nbsp; In plain English, recency bias means that most often, investors believe that the road ahead will be the same as the road behind.</li>
<li>This time, Trump has experience from his first term.&nbsp; Instead of claiming the glory of the stock market going up during his presidency, Trump appears to have a bigger fish to fry.&nbsp; The bigger fish is to truly make America great again.</li>
<li>An easy way for prudent investors to understand what Trump appears to be wanting to do is to think of investors in the U.S. as addicts who have been continuously fed intoxicating substances by the U.S. government over the last 20 years.  With borrowing and spending, it got so bad that no one would even talk about detox.  Whether you like Trump or dislike Trump, the fact is that he is the first president since Ronald Reagan who appears to have the guts to take the country through a detox.  Here is the key question for investors – will Trump carry through a full detox, or will he get distracted along the way?</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>In the long run, detox is good for the country and for investors.&nbsp; In the short run, detox may upset the apple cart.</li>
<li>No one can deny that the U.S. government cannot continue with the following:
<ul>
<li>Massive borrowing and spending</li>
<li>Growing the national debt to unsustainable levels</li>
<li>Transferring massive wealth from the U.S. to other countries such as China</li>
<li>Paying for highly inefficient and bloated bureaucracy as well as massive frauds</li>
<li>Paying for the defense of Europe</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>The JOLTS report was released at 10am ET.</li>
<li>Consumer Price Index (CPI) is ahead on Wednesday at 8:30am ET, and Producer Price Index (PPI) will be released on Thursday at 8:30am ET.</li>
</ul>
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Magnificent Seven Money Flows</h4>
In the early trade, money flows are positive in Tesla Inc (TSLA).
In the early trade, money flows are neutral in Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), NVIDIA Corp (NVDA), Microsoft Corp (MSFT), and Meta Platforms Inc (META).
In the early trade, money flows are negative in Alphabet Inc Class C (GOOG) and Apple Inc (AAPL).
In the early trade, money flows are like a yoyo in S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1 (QQQ).
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Momo Crowd And Smart Money In Stocks</h4>
Investors can gain an edge by knowing money flows in SPY and QQQ.  Investors can get a bigger edge by knowing when smart money is buying stocks, gold, and oil.  The most popular ETF for gold is SPDR Gold Trust (GLD).  The most popular ETF for silver is iShares Silver Trust (SLV).  The most popular ETF for oil is United States Oil ETF (USO).

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Protection Band And What To Do Now</h4>
It is important for investors to look ahead and not in the rearview mirror.  The proprietary protection band from The Arora Report puts all of the data, all of the indicators, all of the news, all of the crosscurrents, all of the models, and all of the analysis in an analytical framework that is easily actionable by investors.
Consider continuing to hold good, very long term, existing positions. Based on individual risk preference, consider a protection band consisting of cash or Treasury bills or short-term tactical trades as well as short to medium term hedges and short term hedges. This is a good way to protect yourself and participate in the upside at the same time.
You can determine your protection bands by adding cash to hedges.&nbsp; The high band of the protection is appropriate for those who are older or conservative. The low band of the protection is appropriate for those who are younger or aggressive.&nbsp; If you do not hedge, the total cash level should be more than stated above but significantly less than cash plus hedges.
A protection band of 0% would be very bullish and would indicate full investment with 0% in cash.&nbsp; A protection band of 100% would be very bearish and would indicate a need for aggressive protection with cash and hedges or aggressive short selling.
It is worth reminding that you cannot take advantage of new upcoming opportunities if you are not holding enough cash.&nbsp; When adjusting hedge levels, consider adjusting partial stop quantities for stock positions (non ETF); consider using wider stops on remaining quantities and also allowing more room for high beta stocks.&nbsp; High beta stocks are the ones that move more than the market.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Traditional 60/40 Portfolio</h4>
Probability based risk reward adjusted for inflation does not favor long duration strategic bond allocation at this time.
Those who want to stick to traditional 60% allocation to stocks and 40% to bonds may consider focusing on only high quality bonds and bonds of five year duration or less.&nbsp; Those willing to bring sophistication to their investing may consider using bond ETFs as tactical positions and not strategic positions at this time.

Hedges Become Profitable, Trump Stock Market Put Failed – Trump Has Bigger Fish To Fry

J.P. Morgan analyst Rahul Krotthapalli reiterated a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/WEN/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neutral rating</a> on the shares of Wendy&#8217;s Co (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WEN#NASDAQ">WEN</a>) with a price target of $17.00.
Wendy&#8217;s first in-person investor update since 2019 featured CEO Kirk Tanner reflecting on his first year and outlining a strategy for the brand&#8217;s turnaround.
With 7,240 units and under $15 billion in global sales, Wendy&#8217;s lags behind competitors like McDonald&#8217;s Corp, KFC, and others, said the analyst.
The company has a less developed international presence, with around 82% of units and 87% of sales in the U.S. This, coupled with a sub-1x sales/investment ratio, has hindered growth.
Wendy&#8217;s international markets, excluding Canada, have struggled to sustain the necessary investments for scaling.
The total free cash flow (FCF) generation for the next four years, accounting for the full capital intensity of the business, is expected to be over $650 million, compared to a comparable outlook of around $700-800 million or the company&#8217;s CFO estimate of $1.1-1.2 billion based on base capital expenditure definitions.
The analyst would have appreciated a more thorough discussion on improving the sales/investment ratio and unit economics, as well as a deeper focus on the crucial role of technology and talent in Wendy&#8217;s brand turnaround.
The focus was on boosting the equity story by revitalizing the business and brand momentum through various topline and operational initiatives.

According to the analyst, Technology is becoming more standardized, while talent is still scarce in the industry, which is quickly adapting to upskill and enhance all areas of the business using AI.
Attracting and retaining highly skilled engineers and data scientists is challenging, especially when competing with QSR peers with much larger global sales.
Around $150 million in capital expenditure over the next four years is allocated to scaling digital capabilities and modernizing the tech stack to restart growth.
This is also supported by a significant increase in general and administrative (G&amp;A) investments, including a ~$25 million increase in F25, with limited near-term leverage, per the analyst.
The analyst highlighted that investments are being made to speed up the deployment of digital menu boards (currently in ~300 stores), Voice AI-enabled drive-thrus (in ~100 stores), and digital kiosks (handling ~75% of in-store dining transactions).
A new performance matrix is being implemented across the U.S. system, focusing on customer visits/frequency, customer satisfaction, operations, people, and financial excellence, with increased oversight on franchise accountability.
Customer segmentation is driving menu innovation, with new lemonade flavors and formats planned for this summer, targeting the Hispanic (23% of QSR traffic) and Gen Z (21%) cohorts.
The analyst further noted that Families (35% of QSR traffic) are another area of focus as Wendy&#8217;s has lost share in the past few years, which will be a focus area.
Canada leads the international segment, accounting for over 45% of its sales and about 35% of its units. The international business currently represents around 13% of system sales and 18% of units, with plans to grow at an 11% unit CAGR, reaching approximately 2,000 locations (24% of system units) by 2028.
The update lacked a deeper discussion on improving the sales/investment ratio and technology and talent investments, which are crucial for the brand&#8217;s future success and confidence in its growth plans, similar to its modest 3-4% global unit growth target, noted the analyst.
Price Action: WEN shares traded lower by 2.54% at $15.19 at last check Tuesday.
