BP plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BP#NYSE">BP</a>) announced Friday that it will <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/news-and-insights/press-releases/bp-agrees-to-sell-us-onshore-wind-business-to-ls-power.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">sell its entire U.S. onshore wind energy portfolio</a> to LS Power, a New York-based energy infrastructure firm. This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and prioritize targeted low-carbon investments.
The deal covers 10 wind farms across seven states with a total capacity of 1.3 gigawatts. This move is part of BP&#8217;s $20 billion divestment plan, which aims to refocus capital allocation.
William Lin, executive vice president for gas and low carbon energy at BP, said the assets and workforce were strong, but the company concluded that &#8220;we are no longer the best owners to take it forward.&#8221; He expressed confidence in LS Power&#8217;s ability to scale the wind business while supporting bp&#8217;s transitioning staff.

LS Power plans to integrate the wind projects into its clean energy portfolio, which already spans 21GW of power generation and extensive transmission infrastructure. Paul Segal, CEO of LS Power, described the acquisition as a strategic expansion to meet rising energy demand through well-contracted renewable assets.
The sale is expected to close by year-end, pending regulatory approvals. So far in 2025, BP has completed or signed $1.5 billion in divestments and aims to hit $3–4 billion by year-end, with further updates due in its second-quarter earnings report.
This decision follows BP&#8217;s recent warning about a potential earnings dip tied to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/07/46365707/bp-braces-for-profit-hit-as-oil-prices-decline" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sliding oil prices</a>, highlighting the company&#8217;s pivot toward more resilient and efficient operations.

BP Sells US Wind Portfolio In $20 Billion Divestment Push

The Conference of the Parties (COP) 29 summit brought global leaders to Baku, Azerbaijan, for an 11-day session to address climate change, carbon market mechanisms and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/green-energy">climate finance</a>.
Hosted in a country heavily reliant on fossil fuels, the event is a mix of urgency and controversy, particularly after BBC<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crmzvdn9e18o"> reported</a> local representatives engaging in oil and gas deals.
Still, the primary focus of its first days is establishing the rules for a global carbon market — a move aimed at helping countries meet emissions targets by trading carbon credits.
This mechanism, intended to fund projects that reduce emissions globally, allows wealthy countries to purchase credits from those with lower emissions, thus offsetting their carbon output.
The stakes are high at COP29, particularly with pressing issues such as funding for climate-vulnerable countries and updating climate targets. The attendees will discuss the succession of the annual $100 billion pledged by developing nations, as the sum may need to be raised significantly to account for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/esg/24/10/41621596/net-zero-by-2050-might-cost-the-world-78-trillion-wood-mackenzie-estimates">increasing impact of climate change</a>. This finance component is critical for maintaining trust between rich and poor nations, especially as commitments still need to be met.
"I'm as frustrated as anyone that one single COP can't deliver the full transformation that every nation needs… [but] it is here that parties need to agree a way out of this mess. That's why here in Baku, we must agree on a new global climate finance goal,"<a href="https://unsdg.un.org/latest/stories/ambitious-new-climate-finance-goal-entirely-self-interest-every-single-nation-un"> said</a> the U.N. climate chief Simon Stiell.
The upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in January 2025 gives participants a dose of doubt. During his previous term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and rolled back numerous environmental regulations.
Analysts anticipate a similar approach, potentially hindering U.S. contributions to global climate finance. Trump's return could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41883635/trump-looks-to-undo-biden-climate-progress-with-burgum-as-energy-czar-report">exacerbate tensions</a>, mainly as he has been vocal about downplaying climate initiatives.
Still, greenlighting the carbon credit quality standards on the first day provides an opportunity for a U.N.-backed global carbon market that would fund critical projects.
Juan Carlos Arredondo Brun, a former climate negotiator for Mexico and now a director at a carbon market data company Abatable, noted this development &#8220;will bring us closer to operationalizing the carbon market before any single party may decide to move away from the Paris Agreement,"<a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/cop29-countries-endorse-global-carbon-market-framework-2024-11-11/"> per</a> Reuter's report.
The carbon market, increasingly popular among corporations seeking to offset their emissions, has some of the largest buyers in the energy and automotive sectors. Shell (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHEL#NYSE">SHEL</a>), Volkswagen (OTCPK: VWAGY), and Takeda (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAK#NYSE">TAK</a>) were the top three companies retiring carbon credits in 2023.
Shell led with 16 million credits, primarily from forestry projects, while Volkswagen retired eight million credits linked to renewable energy and reforestation. Pharmaceutical giant Takeda contributed nearly three million credits to reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gases.
A standardized carbon market could be a lifeline for U.S. companies committed to carbon-emission goals. Notable examples include Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), which is delaying the launch of a next-generation all-electric pickup truck and has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/08/40496864/ford-scraps-electric-suv-as-it-adjusts-to-lower-electric-vehicle-demand">scrapped the development</a> of a new three-row electric SUV. Yet, the management has confirmed it will seek to comply with emissions targets, including purchasing carbon credits as needed.
The COP29 conference will run until Nov. 22. Setting a new annual budget could significantly impact clean energy investments. Investors should watch iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ICLN#NASDAQ">ICLN</a>) and sub-sector ETFs like the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) and First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FAN#NYSE">FAN</a>).

Urgency, Debate Mark COP29 As Leaders Push For Carbon Market Rules, Worry About Trump

First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FAN#NYSE">FAN</a>), which follows the wind energy industry, is up 4% since January and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/wind">6.6% in the past year</a>.
The coal industry, meanwhile, has been facing setbacks from the investment community for several years. 
The obvious shift to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/clean-energy">clean energy sources</a> hasn't yet been enough to declare coal's definitive demise, but concerns over climate change from fossil fuel burning have caused many firms and individuals to drop coal-related holdings.
However, continued dependence on coal burning abroad continues to be a lifeline for coal companies in the U.S., pushing the industry into a sharp contrast to the clean energy sector, which has struggled to outperform the market in 2024.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is Coal Dead? Some Don't Think So</h3>
In 2020, the market saw the shutdown of VanEck Vectors Coal ETF, which was at the time the only remaining ETF following the coal industry.
At the time, fund manager BlackRock Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) said the firm's actively managed funds would no longer hold shares of companies deriving more than 25% of revenues from the thermal coal business, Barrons <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/the-only-coal-etf-is-closing-what-it-means-for-investors-51608225200">reported</a>.
In turn, many investors and firms have switched towards environmentally-friendly energy stocks and ETFs.
Yet some in the industry continue to believe there's a case for investing in coal.
In January of this year, Range ETFs, a firm dedicated to running ETFs around niche themes, launched the Range Global Coal Index ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COAL#NYSE">COAL</a>) which provides exposure to companies involved in the production, exploration, development, transportation, and distribution of coal.
Since its launch, the price of the ETF oscillated between $21 and $26 and is $22.6 at the time of this writing, with year-to-date gains of 0.86%.
In an investment document, Range claims there is still an investment case for coal, in spite of an obvious global trend to detach from it.
Demand for coal actually grew on a global scale between 2021 and 2022, led by China and India, according to the International Energy Agency.
Coal burning represents 16.2% of the total utility-scale electricity generation in the U.S., according to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration and 36% on a global scale.
In the U.S., the firm says, "‘energy security' as one element of national security." This means that the government will continue to guarantee the availability of reliable energy sources to make up for possible gaps in energy supply stemming from green energy production.

In June, the coal industry was affected by election results in India, which gave investors the idea that the country might not continue with a plan to upsize its coal use, though <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/06/39173971/coal-stocks-take-a-breather-as-trading-sentiment-sours-in-commodities-markets-was-the-election-in-in">some analysts called it a natural market correction</a> from an "overbought" sector.
The balance between trends running against "dirty" energy sources and short-term tailwinds for the coal industry have resulted in varying performances for some of its largest players over the past year.

<li>Shares of Peabody Energy Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BTU#NYSE">BTU</a>), which is the largest coal producer in the U.S. are down 7.7% since January but up 2.3% in the past year.</li>
<li>The second largest producer, Arch Resources Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARCH#NYSE">ARCH</a>) has performed a lot worse in 2024, with shares down over 24% since January. According <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/24/08/40363492/top-3-energy-stocks-that-may-rocket-higher-this-quarter">to data from Benzinga Pro</a>, the stock appears oversold and its share price could rise this year.</li>
<li>Warrior Met Coal Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HCC#NYSE">HCC</a>) shares are up 49% in the last year.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wind Beats Solar In 2024</h3>
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40379430">A Benzinga technical analysis from this week</a> showed that EV maker Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) could be up for a rebound after losing almost 13% of its value since January.
Other companies in the clean energy sector, however, could be struggling more.
Shares in the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ICLN#NASDAQ">ICLN</a>) are stuck in a pattern that technical analysts call the "death cross," which occurs when the 50-day moving average crosses below its long-term moving average of 200 days. The fund is down 8% since January and 12% in the last year.
 The solar energy sector has been struggling more than wind. Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>), which follows the solar sector, has also performed poorly in recent periods. The fund is down 22% since January and 30% in the past year.

Is Coal Dead? Wind Just Ate Its Lunch This Year — 7 Energy ETFs To Watch In 2024

Due to the trade, investment&nbsp;and financial ties between the warring nations, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/russia-ukraine-war">the invasion of Ukraine by Russia</a> has significantly dimmed the outlook for global economic growth.
With Russia cutting off its gas supplies to Europe, billionaire philanthropist&nbsp;Bill Gates sees a silver lining to the conflict.
What Happened: Featured in a CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2022/10/18/we-need-to-make-the-green-way-far-less-expensive-than-it-is-today-says-breakthrough-energy-founder-bill-gates.html?__source=twitter|main">interview</a> on earlier in October, Gates was on to talk about Breakthrough Energy, an orginazation he started seven years ago&nbsp;that aims to accelerate innovation in sustainable energy&nbsp;in an effort to bring together private capital, public funding and&nbsp;philanthropy to fight climate change.
He&rsquo;s enlisted BlackRock Inc&rsquo;s (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/blk#NYSE">BLK</a>) Larry Fink, members of the Biden administration&nbsp;and others to build a $2.25-billion venture capital fund that supports over 100 companies that&nbsp;fight climate change.
&quot;[The war is] good for the long run because people won&#39;t want to be dependent on Russian natural gas,&rdquo; Gates said, explaining how those countries depending on Russian natural gas are transitioning to new approaches.
&ldquo;So they&#39;ll move to these new approaches more rapidly.&quot;
Why It&nbsp;Matters: The new approaches, which Gates referred to as &quot;the energy transition&quot; in a blog <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/Energy/2022-State-of-the-Energy-Transition">post </a>on Tuesday, are a pipeline of innovations in investment, policies&nbsp;and general public awareness that countries secure more energy security if the they can reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions from 51 billion tons to zero.
Unfortunately, the Ukrainian conflict and the ensuing energy crisis are straining the continent&#39;s expanding climate agreement. Recent investments made by several nations in new fossil fuel projects only serve to compound an already pressing issue.
Ultimately, net zero and energy security are two sides of the same coin. &ldquo;Clean-energy innovations are the only way to achieve either one,&rdquo; Gates outlined in his post.
&ldquo;I am optimistic about what people are capable of in a crisis, and in the long run, I wouldn&rsquo;t bet against us,&rdquo; Gates said. &ldquo;Unfortunately, we don&rsquo;t have the luxury of a long run. We have already achieved many energy breakthroughs. We need to achieve more, faster, to avoid a climate disaster.&rdquo;

3 ETFs The Could Profit From A Green New Deal

A trio of exchange-traded funds&nbsp;that will benefit from President Joe Biden&#39;s tax plan could be about to break out.
These ETFs invest in alternative energy companies: First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fan#NYSE">FAN</a>), the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tan#NYSE">TAN</a>), and the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/icln#NASDAQ">ICLN</a>).

The First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF is testing resistance at the $22.80 level. If this resistance breaks, it could make a move higher.
Resistance is a concentration of sellers. In this case, they have gathered at the $22.80 level, which has kept a ceiling on&nbsp;shares.
If FAN trades above $22.80, it will mean the sellers have left the market. Buyers will need to pay higher prices, which&nbsp;will force FAN to rally.

The Invesco Solar ETF has broken its recent downtrend. This means it may be about to move higher.

Shares of several Chinese companies are trading higher. New coronavirus cases in China have reportedly began leveling off, raising hopes of stability.

Broadly speaking, alternative energy exchange traded funds are performing well this, but there are some members of this group that are disappointing.
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Underscoring the strength in the clean energy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/19/08/14176403/this-clean-energy-etf-is-cleaning-up">ETF patch this year,</a> the First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fan#NYSE">FAN</a>) is up just 13.17%, but some fundamental data indicate wind energy names could be credible alternative energy plays over the long term.
FAN, which recently turned 11 years old, tracks the ISE Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index.
&ldquo;Companies in the index universe that are identified as providing goods and services exclusively to the wind energy industry are given an aggregate weight of 66.67% of the index,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.ftportfolios.com/Retail/Etf/EtfSummary.aspx?Ticker=FAN">according to First Trust</a>.
&ldquo;Those companies determined to be significant participants in the wind energy industry despite not being exclusive to such industry are given an aggregate weight of 33.33% of the index. This weighting is done to ensure that companies that are exclusive to the wind energy industry, which generally have smaller market capitalizations relative to their multi-industry counterparts, are adequately represented in the index.&rdquo;
<h3>Why It&#39;s Important</h3>
Along with solar, wind power is the leader in clean energy adoption around the world, but most of that adoption is outside the U.S. FAN reflects the global nature of the wind energy business with exposure to 10 countries, led by Denmark at 18.19%. Half of FAN&#39;s country exposures are European nations, reflecting that region&#39;s above-average adoption of wind power.
&ldquo;The offshore wind industry will continue to witness a healthy growth driven by rapidly falling costs due to economies of scale and new technology developments,&rdquo; <a href="https://ihsmarkit.com/research-analysis/strong-winds-in-the-sails-of-the-offshore-wind-industry.html">said IHS Markit in a recent note</a>.
&ldquo;Currently, over 61 GW worth of capacity are under different stages of development, mostly concentrated in mainland China and Europe. Emerging markets such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the United States will appear shortly on the global stage.&rdquo;
FAN devotes nearly 12% of its combined weight to China and Japan. China, the world&#39;s second-largest economy, is actively trying to reduce its massive pollution footprint.
<h3>What&#39;s Next</h3>
As is the case with other clean energy options, declining costs are among the positive factors seen boosting wind adoption.
&ldquo;Costs will continue to decline owing to technological improvements across the value chain including new generations of turbines, foundations, substations, cables, installation and operations and maintenance (O&amp;M) services, and ports and vessels sustaining the development of offshore wind,&rdquo; according to IHS Markit.

You might have heard this is a presidential election year. In ETF Land, that means plenty of folks will be pontificating about which funds should outperform and lag if Democrat Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders wins. These prognosticators are also trying to figure out which ETFs are destined for greatness and disappointment if Republican Donald Trump wins.
For the purposes of this article, the guess is that Clinton wins. <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/president/">Recent polls</a> support that guess; but to be clear, neither this writer nor Benzinga is endorsing either candidate. Again, this writer is not revealing his political leanings.
Now, the good part: Rejecting what is perhaps the worst election year ETF advice floating around out there. That being buying alternative energy ETFs if Clinton wins. This investment theory is too cute to be valid, because it is almost entirely based on the assumption that Democrats are usually more in favor of solar, wind and related energy sources than Republicans are.

<h3>Democrat In The House, Alternatives For The Win?</h3>
While acknowledging that past performances are not guarantees of future returns, the returns of some well-known alternative energy ETFs during the current bull market, for which Democrat President Barack Obama has been in office over its duration, are not worth writing home about.
President Obama had good timing. He took the oath of office just a few weeks before March 10, 2009 &mdash; the start of the current bull market. However, that marked the start of some bad times for alternative energy ETFs. That is not necessarily President Obama&#39;s fault, but it does poke holes in the theory that a Democrat in the White House is good for alternative energy ETFs.
<h3>Historical Performance</h3>
For example, the Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tan#NYSE">TAN</a>) has lost 50 percent during the current bull market. In 2012, the year in which President Obama was reelected, TAN <a href="http:// https://guggenheimpartners.com/news/guggenheim-announces-reverse-share-split">was reverse split</a>...twice.
The PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy(ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pbw#NYSE">PBW</a>) has also been a dud during this bull market, shedding nearly 34 percent.
To be fair, the First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge US (ETF) (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/qcln#NASDAQ">QCLN</a>) and the First Trust Global Wind Energy (ETF) (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/fan#NYSE">FAN</a>) are up 56.7 percent and 40.2 percent, respectively during the current bull market.
But are those performances really something to brag about when remembering the S&amp;P 500 is up almost 230 percent since March 10, 2009?

Dispelling The Worst Election Year ETF Advice

The wind park at Jouttikallio, around 80 km from Vaasa, has a capacity of 21 megawatts and will satisfy the electricity demands of around 12,600 households. The project has been granted all the permits necessary for construction and is expected to be commissioned and delivered to Allianz at the end of 2016. OX2 will continue to be responsible for the commercial and technical management of the wind farm.
"Entering the Finnish market is another important milestone this year for us. Finland is a promising European wind market and it will help us to increase and further diversify our renewables portfolio", said David Jones, Head of Renewables at Allianz Capital Partners. "We are pleased to expand our relationship with OX2 and we look forward to working with them on the successful long-term operation of this wind farm."
"We are proud that Allianz has once again shown its confidence in us, and we are looking forward to building and delivering another wind farm for them, this time in Finland", said Paul Stormoen, Managing Director of OX2 Wind.
Allianz's commitment to the European renewable energy sector exceeds 2.5 billion euros in 55 wind farms and 7 solar parks. ACP's wind and solar portfolio generates sufficient renewable energy to supply over 800,000 households which is comparable to a city the size of Barcelona. Allianz's current renewable energy portfolio is located in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria and now in Finland.
The parties have contractually agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transaction is subject to certain closing conditions and is expected to close by end of January 2016.

	The momentum is also supportive, as the RSI has made higher lows while price was flat to down. This price action is bullish in our opinion.
