Fund seeks to track the investment results of the MSCI South Africa 25/50 Index (the Underlying Index), which is a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index that is designed to measure the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization segments of the equity market in South Africa. The Underlying Index is rebalanced quarterly using an optimization process that aims to minimize the constituent weight differences between the Underlying Index and the MSCI South Africa Index (the Parent Index). The Underlying Index uses a capping methodology that limits the weight of any single group entity (constituents that MSCI determines have a control relationship) to a maximum of 25% of the Underlying Index weight, and the sum of all group entities with a weight above 5% to an aggregate of 50% of the Underlying Index weight. A group entity is a group of companies that operate as an affiliated corporate group but may separately issue listed securities.

The U.S. dollar is notching its strongest one-day gain against the Japanese yen in nearly two months as traders react to President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs targeting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/07/46281204/wall-street-today-trump-tariffs-japan-south-korea-stocks-drop">multiple U.S. trading partners.</a>
Starting Aug. 1, all goods imported from Japan and other Asian trading partners will face a 25% tariff, Trump announced Monday, citing persistent trade imbalances and unfair practices.
The move follows a 90-day pause for negotiations that fell short of providing a better outcome than the &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; duties on April 2. And now, the fallout is landing hard.
The dollar surged past 146 yen, gaining 1.2% on the day—its sharpest move since May 12. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Markets Shake As White House Sends Tariff Letters To Trading Partners</h3>
In an official letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump stated that the new tariffs aim to address what he called "years of Japan&#8217;s tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers."
He also warned that any retaliatory tariffs would be met with proportional increases by the U.S. and said transshipped goods would face higher rates. 
He also offered an out: Japanese companies that move production to the U.S. won't face tariffs — and he promised quick approvals for those who do.
According to International Trade Statistics data, U.S. imports from Japan totaled $152.07 billion in 2024, with vehicles accounting for $51.27 billion and machinery, including nuclear reactors and boilers, adding another $36.05 billion.
The White House stated that the tariff levels could be revised based on bilateral trade relationships, with the goal of reducing trade deficits and protecting U.S. national security.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">More Countries Face Tariff Hikes</h3>
South Korea will also face a 25% tariff starting in August under the same terms as Japan. The dollar gained 0.9% against the Korean won in the session, reinforcing the greenback's strength amid heightened global tensions.
Several other countries were also named in the tariff list, including:

<li>South Africa: 30% tariff;</li>
<li>Kazakhstan: 25% tariff,</li>
<li>Laos and Myanmar: 40% tariffs</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ETFs Took A Beating</h3>
Country-focused ETFs sold off hard on Monday: 
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWJ#NYSE">EWJ</a>) dropped 2.3%, marking its worst session since April 10. That's a sharp reversal after a 25% rally off spring lows.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWY#NYSE">EWY</a>) plunged 3.5%, also its worst day since early April.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWM#NYSE">EWM</a>) fell 2%.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZA#NYSE">EZA</a>) dropped 2%.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's Next?</h3>
The White House said tariffs could still be adjusted — higher or lower — depending on "the strength of the relationship" with each country.
Investors are now watching closely to see how Japan, South Korea, and others respond — and whether the European Union, facing a similar deadline this week, becomes the next target in Trump's escalating trade war.

President Trump Says U.S. Will Impose 30% Tariff On South Africa

As global markets reel from Donald Trump&#8216;s sweeping tariff announcement, speculators who wagered on a chain reaction of trade retaliation may soon cash <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44626421/trumps-reign-of-tariffs-unleashes-d-day-on-wall-street-analyst-warns-of-stagflation-risk">in the big prize.</a>
On Thursday, trading on CFTC-regulated prediction platform Kalshi lit up with activity as speculators priced in a sharp rise in retaliatory tariffs from major U.S. trading partners. 
The market titled "Which countries will impose tariffs on the US before Q3 2025?" saw odds spike across several jurisdictions in the wake of Trump's announcement.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Global Trade War Now Becomes The Base Case</h3>
<ul>
<li>The odds of South Korea enacting retaliatory measures soared to 79%, up 29 percentage points in a single day. </li>
<li>Japan followed with a 33-point jump to 73%</li>
<li>South Africa climbed to 74%, up 16 points.</li>
<li>India saw a more cautious move, with odds now at 35%</li>
<li>Kalshi traders assigned a 96% probability that Brussels will strike back with its own tariffs in the coming months.</li>
</ul>
Only Mexico moved in the opposite direction. Following Trump&#8217;s exemption of North American partners from the new tariff structure, the odds of retaliation from the southern neighbor collapsed to 45%, down 31 percentage points.

Speaking on Bloomberg TV, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick attempted to downplay the likelihood of backlash, saying the tariffs will be applied broadly and uniformly, and adding that "it will not be effective for countries to retaliate against Trump tariffs."

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Country ETFs Witness Deep Declines</h2>
Amid the turmoil on Wall Street, U.S.-listed country ETFs took a beating Thursday as investors dumped risk ahead of possible tit-for-tat tariffs,
The VanEck Vietnam ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VNM#NYSE">VNM</a>) plunged more than 8% in premarket trading, on track for its worst session since March 2020. The U.S. will apply a 46% tariff rate on Vietnam.
Japan's iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWJ#NYSE">EWJ</a>) dropped 3%, while the iShares China Large Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) fell 1.8%. The two biggest Asian economies will see their respective tariff rate rising to 24% and 34%, respectively. 
India's iShares MSCI India ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INDA#NYSE">INDA</a>) and South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWY#NYSE">EWY</a>) declined 1.1% and 1.5% respectively. India and South Korea are poised to face a 25% and 26% increase, respectively, in the cost of exporting goods to the U.S.
The SPDR DJ Euro STOXX 50 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FEZ#NYSE">FEZ</a>) dipped 0.9%, while the iShares South Africa Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZA#NYSE">EZA</a>) fell 4.5%.

On September 5, 2024, U. S. Steel, along with the United Steelworkers union ("USW") and Wheeling-Nippon, has filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions with the United States Department of Commerce ("DOC") and the United States International Trade Commission ("ITC"), on imports of corrosion-resistant steel ("CORE") from Australia, Brazil, Canada1, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

Wall Street was moderately upbeat last week, with the S&amp;P 500, the Dow Jones and the Russell 2000 adding about 0.6%, 1.5% and 0.8%, respectively, and the Nasdaq Composite remaining flat. The benchmark U.S. treasury yield was 4.25% on Jun 21, 2024 versus 4.20% recorded at the start of the week.
Last week, in a historic milestone, NVIDIA (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nvda#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) rallied further to become the world&#39;s most valuable company, topping Microsoft (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/msft#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>). The artificial intelligence chipmaker topped $3.33 trillion in market value on Jun 18 compared with the software giant&#39;s $3.31 trillion market cap.
However, NVIDIA&#39;s ascent was short-lived and profit booking dragged down the company by the end of the week. NVIDIA was down 2.5% last week.
Meanwhile, U.S. retail sales that released last week were weaker than expected in May. Sales rose just 0.1% sequentially, one-tenth of a percentage point below the Dow Jones estimate. However, the result was slightly better than the downwardly revised 0.2% decline in April. Such soft retail sales boosted the probability of a sooner-than-expected Fed rate cut.
On the housing data front, U.S. homebuilder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes fell to 43 in June, down two points from May. This marks the lowest reading since December 2023. Sales of existing homes in the United States fell for three successive months in May while prices hit another record.

This stability offered strength to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange last week, which has otherwise suffered post-election.

4 Top-Performing ETF Areas of Last Week

Indian equity, as tracked by the iShares MSCI India ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INDA#BATS">INDA</a>), has been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/brics">outperforming all other BRICS nations</a>. 
The ETF is up 16.3% over the past one year, followed closely by the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWZ#NYSE">EWZ</a>) at 12.9%, while Russian, Chinese and South African equity <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/INDA/news">lag far behind</a>.

Billionaire hedge fund manager, Ray Dalio, has long been an investor in the emerging markets. His hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates&#8216; top holding is the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IEMG#NYSE">IEMG</a>) which has an 18.52% portfolio allocation towards India. Dalio&#8217;s hedge fund has another 1.42% invested in the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VWO#NYSE">VWO</a>) which has just over 20% allocated in Indian equity.

At the recent World Economic Forum (WEF) 2024 event in Davos, Dalio <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/wef-2024/story/wef-2024-india-is-at-a-very-special-moment-for-a-number-of-reasons-says-bridgewaters-ray-dalio-413645-2024-01-16">spoke</a> about India. In an interview with Business Today TV, Dalio told Siddharth Zarabi that &#8220;India is at a very special moment&#8230; not burdened by an excessive amount of debt.&#8221;
Dalio emphasized a prudent approach to Indian markets. Acknowledging their current high valuations, Dalio advised cautious exposure to the economy. Dalio, a strong believer in market cycles, said that he would have exposure to Indian markets but &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t be overextended&#8221; at their current valuations. 
He also highlighted India&#8217;s distinct advantage that the economy is not burdened by an excessive amount of debt. &#8220;It strikes me very much similar to where China was when Deng Xiaoping came in roughly 1980,&#8221; said Dalio. Dalio also expressed his hope for India&#8217;s market openness and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#8216;s leadership.
