The Fund seeks to track the investment results of the MSCI Malaysia Index (the Underlying Index), which is designed to measure the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization segments of the Malaysian market. As of August 31, 2023, a significant portion of the Underlying Index is represented by securities of companies in the financials industry or sector. The components of the Underlying Index are likely to change over time. BFA uses an indexing approach to try to achieve the Fund's investment objective. Unlike many investment companies, the Fund does not try to beat the index it tracks and does not seek temporary defensive positions when markets decline or appear overvalued. Indexing may eliminate the chance that the Fund will substantially outperform the Underlying Index but also may reduce some of the risks of active management, such as poor security selection.

The U.S. dollar is notching its strongest one-day gain against the Japanese yen in nearly two months as traders react to President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs targeting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/07/46281204/wall-street-today-trump-tariffs-japan-south-korea-stocks-drop">multiple U.S. trading partners.</a>
Starting Aug. 1, all goods imported from Japan and other Asian trading partners will face a 25% tariff, Trump announced Monday, citing persistent trade imbalances and unfair practices.
The move follows a 90-day pause for negotiations that fell short of providing a better outcome than the &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; duties on April 2. And now, the fallout is landing hard.
The dollar surged past 146 yen, gaining 1.2% on the day—its sharpest move since May 12. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Markets Shake As White House Sends Tariff Letters To Trading Partners</h3>
In an official letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump stated that the new tariffs aim to address what he called "years of Japan&#8217;s tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers."
He also warned that any retaliatory tariffs would be met with proportional increases by the U.S. and said transshipped goods would face higher rates. 
He also offered an out: Japanese companies that move production to the U.S. won't face tariffs — and he promised quick approvals for those who do.
According to International Trade Statistics data, U.S. imports from Japan totaled $152.07 billion in 2024, with vehicles accounting for $51.27 billion and machinery, including nuclear reactors and boilers, adding another $36.05 billion.
The White House stated that the tariff levels could be revised based on bilateral trade relationships, with the goal of reducing trade deficits and protecting U.S. national security.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">More Countries Face Tariff Hikes</h3>
South Korea will also face a 25% tariff starting in August under the same terms as Japan. The dollar gained 0.9% against the Korean won in the session, reinforcing the greenback's strength amid heightened global tensions.
Several other countries were also named in the tariff list, including:

Country-focused ETFs sold off hard on Monday: 
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWJ#NYSE">EWJ</a>) dropped 2.3%, marking its worst session since April 10. That's a sharp reversal after a 25% rally off spring lows.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWY#NYSE">EWY</a>) plunged 3.5%, also its worst day since early April.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWM#NYSE">EWM</a>) fell 2%.</li>
<li>The iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZA#NYSE">EZA</a>) dropped 2%.</li>

The White House said tariffs could still be adjusted — higher or lower — depending on "the strength of the relationship" with each country.
Investors are now watching closely to see how Japan, South Korea, and others respond — and whether the European Union, facing a similar deadline this week, becomes the next target in Trump's escalating trade war.
Meanwhile, the message from markets is clear: tariffs are back in play, and traders are bracing for more volatility ahead.

Everybody has been talking about the start to the year that U.S. equities have had, and for good reason. January saw the asset class&rsquo; strongest monthly performance in more than five years.

At 10.5 percent YTD, KSA is among the best performing of the portfolio&rsquo;s top holdings. As a side note, it&rsquo;s interesting to see the position taken up by the iShares MSCI Hong Kong ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ewh#NYSE">EWH</a>), which is up more than 11 percent YTD. Not only is it the third heaviest-weighted ETF in the model portfolio, but you can see in the table below how closely it correlates to Southeast Asian economies.
If you look at the correlation for EWH (sixth column from the left), you&rsquo;ll see a few deep blue squares where EWH intersects with EWS and EWT (eight, nine, and 10 rows down respectively). This suggests a high-level of correlation between Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia, slightly edging out EWH&rsquo;s correlation with iShares China Large Cap ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fxi#NYSE">FXI</a>).

All told, Quantamize&rsquo;s Emerging Markets Stocks ETFs Q-Folio advises that any emerging markets portfolio should be overweight smaller emerging markets like Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. Emerging Markets You Should Be Overweight According To Quantamize's AI Models

The iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewm#NYSE">EWM</a>) is experiencing an eventful May. EWM, the lone U.S.-listed exchange traded fund tracking Malaysian stocks, sank after a surprise election result ended the 61-year reign of Prime Minister Najib Razak&rsquo;s ruling coalition.
Razak was a controversial figure and often accused of being corrupt and worse. Mahathir Mohamad, 92, who previously served as Malaysia&rsquo;s leader for over two decades, came out of retirement to defeat Razak. It is the <a href="https://www.etftrends.com/malaysia-etf-plummets-shock-election/">first time since 1957 </a>an opposition coalition has held power in the southeast Asian nation.

	What Happened</h3>
Mahathir joined forces with the Pakatan Harapan coalition. Markets adjusted to the election, with Malaysian stocks and EWM rallying, but much of those gains have since been given back.
&ldquo;The surprise victory of the opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition in Malaysia&rsquo;s general elections held on May 9 means a much higher likelihood of fiscal and economic policy change,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/site/pr/10030331">said Fitch Ratings</a>. &ldquo;The PH won 113 of 222 parliamentary seats, resulting in Malaysia&rsquo;s first electoral transfer of power since independence in 1957.&rdquo;
EWM fell below its 200-day moving average during the post-election decline and is now back below that key technical indicator.

	Why It&#39;s Important</h3>
&ldquo;On May 15, Anwar Ibrahim, a leader of the newly elected Hope&#39;s Pact coalition government, was released from prison, three weeks ahead of his previously scheduled release date of June 8,&rdquo; Markit said&nbsp;<a href="https://ihsmarkit.com/research-analysis/malaysian-coalition-stability.html">in a recent note</a>. &ldquo;Before his release, he was granted a full royal pardon, making him eligible once again to enter the parliament, which is a prerequisite for current Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad to be able to transfer the premiership to him.&rdquo;
Political volatility is often a consideration for investors mulling single-country emerging markets ETFs, but historically, EWM is not heavily volatile. The ETF has a three-year standard deviation of 16.91 percent, or less than 100 basis points above the same metric on the MSCI Emerging Markets Index.
&ldquo;The stability of the PH relies on the balance of power between Mahathir and Anwar and is particularly sensitive to the transition of the premiership from the former to the latter,&rdquo; said Markit.

	What&#39;s Next</h3>
EWM holds 47 stocks, over 34 percent of which hail from the financial services sector. If political volatility increases again and affects the country&#39;s banks, EWM could see renewed selling pressure. Investors have pulled $96.10 million from EWM since the start of the current quarter.

Bonds, Intel And Malaysia: Fast Money Picks For July 13

Forgive for taking liberties with Prince songs, but at least the iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewm#NYSE">EWM</a>) existed in 1998 during the dark days of the Asian Financial Crisis. The lone Malaysia exchange traded fund actually debuted in the first quarter of 1996.

	That is relevant because Malaysia&#39;s currency, the ringgit, is acting like it&#39;s 1998 and that is not a good thing. Back then, then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad blamed George Soros, who knows a thing or two about shorting currencies, for sending the ringgit tumbling. These days, the ringgit is in free-fall. Whether or not hedge fund legends are behind the latest decline is immaterial.

	What traders are pondering is whether or not Malaysia&#39;s central bank will revisit the use of capital controls as it did in the late 1990s and the ongoing impact of widespread corruption in the Asian nations.

	&ldquo;For Malaysia, the pressure is mounting as Prime Minister Najib Razak faces a probe of fund transfers into his personal bank accounts,&rdquo; according to <a href="http://emergingequity.org/2015/08/17/asian-financial-crisis-redux-is-malaysia-set-to-introduce-capital-controls-currency-peg/">Emerging Equity</a>.

	A Closer Look</h3>

	A year ago, $1 bought 3.1670 ringgit. At time of writing during Monday&#39;s Asian session, $1 buys 4.1030 ringgit, according to<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/USDMYR:CUR"> Bloomberg data</a>.

	Over that period, EWM has shed a third of its value while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, of which Malaysia is the ninth-largest country weight at 3.1 percent, is down less than 9 percent. Things were not supposed to be this way for EWM, an ETF identified by some market observers as having the potential to endure hawkish changes in the Federal Reserve&#39;s <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/08/5749909/these-emerging-markets-etfs-could-endure-fed-rate-hikes">interest rate policy</a>.

	The backbone of the pro-EWM-as-U.S.-rates-rise thesis was Malaysia&#39;s robust current account surplus and significant foreign exchange reserves. However, those reserves have since dwindled below $100 billion for the first time in five years.

	&ldquo;A 17 percent slide in foreign-exchange reserves this year to $96.7 billion at the end of July suggests the central bank had been intervening to prop up the ringgit, just as Prime Minister Najib Razak faces a probe of fund transfers into his personal bank accounts. Political machinations were among the causes of the ringgit&rsquo;s decline, the prime minister wrote in his blog on Thursday,&rdquo; according to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-08-16/soros-like-attack-on-malaysian-ringgit-revives-memories-of-98">Bloomberg</a>.

	Malaysia&rsquo;s Central Bank Governor Zeti Akhtar acknowledges the country&#39;s currency reserves need to be fortified, but for the moment, she is resisting the implementation of capital controls.

	For those grappling with long positions in EWM, an ETF that has tumbled 23.7 percent over the past 90 days, the hope is a sequel of the Asian Financial Crisis is not repeated. EWM hit an all-time high closing high of $15.75 on February 1, 1997. Ten months later, the ETF closed at $5. It took until 2011 before EWM notched another close above $15.

	EWM&#39;s recent price action confirms at least one thing: Malaysian stocks are betraying their usually docile-by-comparison reputation. EWM has a three-year standard deviation of 11.87 percent compared to 13.17 percent for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, <a href="http://www.ishares.com/us/products/239669/EWM">according to iShares data</a>.

Malaysia ETF Parties Like It's 1998, But That's Not A Good Thing

To say emerging markets equities and exchange traded funds have been jilted be the stronger U.S. dollar and increased speculation that a rate hike by the Federal Reserve is imminent is an understatement.

	If not for a plethora of commodities-related ETFs, emerging markets funds would have a heavy a footprint among the worst-performing ETFs over the past several months. As it is, an average loss of 14.3 percent over the past 90 days for the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vwo#NYSE">VWO</a>) and the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eem#NYSE">EEM</a>), the two largest emerging markets ETFs by assets, is not going to illicit confidence among investors.

	As some single-country ETFs are proving --&nbsp;<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/07/5715330/resisting-the-temptation-of-the-brazil-etf-bounce">think Brazil funds</a>&nbsp;--&nbsp;isolating individual developing economies has proven no more efficacious than investing in diversified funds such as EEM and VWO. Slack performances by emerging markets ETFs tracking stocks from Bangkok to Sau Paulo to Warsaw are prompting investors to think 2015 is a sequel 2013&#39;s &ldquo;taper tantrum&rdquo; when emerging equities were punished on rate hike fears.

	&ldquo;But even if we see a similar pattern this time around, it&rsquo;s important to remember that not all emerging markets are created equal. Emerging markets have become an increasingly heterogeneous asset class, and I believe those emerging economies with the following characteristics are better positioned than others to withstand capital withdrawal from financial investments,&rdquo; said BlackRock Chief Investment Strategist Russ Koesterich <a href="http://www.blackrockblog.com/2015/08/07/emerging-markets-positioned-withstand-fed-hike/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=hero&amp;utm_campaign=hero">in a recent note</a>.

	Importers</h3>

	One avenue for playing emerging markets endorsed by Koesterich is with countries that are commodities importers. Among developing economies, there is no bigger commodities importer than India. Perhaps that explains why the WisdomTree India Earnings ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/epi#NYSE">EPI</a>) is up almost 3 percent over the past 90 days, a period in which the largest Brazil ETF has plunged almost 27 percent.

	<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/08/5730466/a-pleasant-surprise-among-emerging-market-etfs">As Benzinga reported</a> earlier this month, India small-cap ETFs, such as the Market Vectors India Small-Cap Index ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/scif#NYSE">SCIF</a>) and the iShares MSCI India Small-Cap ETF (BATS: SMIN), have been surging in recent weeks, soundly outperforming other single-country emerging markets.

	Other developing nations that have the potential to weather hawkish changes in Fed policy are those with ample foreign currency reserves and current account surpluses.

	&ldquo;One example of a market better positioned to withstand capital withdrawals is Malaysia, which has amassed a current account surplus and significant foreign exchange reserves thanks to export-driven economic growth. International Monetary Fund and World Bank data show that since 2005, Malaysian current account-to-gross domestic product (GDP) and foreign exchange-to-GDP measures have consistently beaten an average of 21 large emerging market economies on a quarterly basis,&rdquo; notes Koesterich.

	Other examples include South Korea and Taiwan. However, highlighting the turbulent environment faced by emerging markets investors, the iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewm#NYSE">EWM</a>), iShares MSCI South Korea Capped ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewy#NYSE">EWY</a>) and the iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewt#NYSE">EWT</a>) have posted an average three-month loss of 15.6 percent.

	All three of those ETFs hit 52-week lows last Friday and in the case of EWY and EWT, those funds are being hindered by slack performances by technology giants. Samsung is dragging EWY lower while <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/15/08/5735542/cashing-in-the-pot-on-chip-etfs">faulty fundamentals in the semiconductor</a> space are plaguing EWT, an ETF that devotes almost 23 percent of its weight to Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tsm#NYSE">TSM</a>).

ETFs to Watch September 26, 2013 (BKLN, SDY, TZA)

Southeast Asia has not been immune from economic controversy this year.

	ETFs tracking Indonesia, the region's largest economy, have plummeted due to the country's widening account deficit and sagging rupiah. The iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ewm#NYSE">EWM</a>) look good for a minute after national elections there earlier this year, but the fund wilted in the face of Federal Reserve tapering chatter. And the list goes on.

	The Market Vectors Vietnam (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vnm#NYSE">VNM</a>) has not been immune from the tumbles experienced by other Southeast Asia ETFs. As was the case last year, VNM has gone through another summertime swoon in 2013. When things get tough for VNM, the problems are usually attributable to Vietnam's banking sector. The financial services sector accounts for nearly a third of VNM's weight.

	In 2012, VNM sank following the arrests of some Vietnamese banking scions that exposed corruption in some of the country's largest financial institutions. This year, VNM's summer swoon was not only the result of the tapering debacle, but Vietnam's struggle's to efficiently implement a plan <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/04/3538437/vietnam-etf-rises-as-bad-debt-company-inches-closer-to-realit">to absolve banks of toxic assets and sour loans</a>.

	The Vietnam Asset Management Company, or VAMC, is Vietnam's TARP equivalent and it has, to this point, been slow-moving and unimpressive.

	"Fitch expects any recovery in the banking system to be gradual, depending on the pace and effectiveness of reforms, and regulatory discipline. The Vietnam Asset Management Company (VAMC) may not tackle many of the asset-quality issues in the near term because some aspects of its operations are still unclear and regulatory rules to improve asset-quality data transparency have been delayed until June 2014. Banking consolidation and reform of state-owned enterprises are likely to progress slowly over the medium-term," <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/23/fitch-slow-reforms-a-drag-on-vietnamese-idUSFit67000420130923">according to Fitch Ratings</a>.

	That does not mean VNM does not offer potential for year-end gains. In each of the previous three years, the ETF has performed well in the fourth quarter, but beyond seasonal trends, there is a decent fundamental backdrop for Vietnamese equities.

	While VNM has posted a gain of just 1.1 percent this year, local stocks have surged 16 percent, good for one of the region's best performances. Even VNM's meager gain is better than what investors would have been treated to with the iShares MSCI Thailand Investable Market ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/thd#NYSE">THD</a>) or the iShares MSCI Indonesia ETF (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/eido#NYSE">EIDO</a>).

	Additionally, Vietnamese policymakers seem intent on, for once, tackling inflation rather than driving growth. Few ETFs, save for India funds, have been as vulnerable to inflation over the years as VNM. Inflation is expected to <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/06/3713134/vietnam-etf-holds-second-half-allure">be about eight percent this year</a>, but the government thinks it can get that number down to seven percent next year.

	Previously mentioned as a potential upside catalyst for Vietnamese equities is a plan to increase foreign ownership limits. One fund manager <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323342404579078730244701454.html">quoted by the Wall Street Journal</a> recently said Vietnamese stocks could jump 10 percent if that plan is approved, adding that foreign fund managers could be compelled to reconsider Vietnam if equity markets there become more liberalized.

	VNM does offer investors another ace up its sleeve. The country has <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/13/08/3872092/three-etfs-for-account-surplus-countries">a current account surplus</a>. Investors do not have to overpay for that surplus, either. VNM has a price-to-book ratio of 1.22, well below those of the comparable China and South Korea ETFs, two markets which have recently been lauded for their discounts relative to the broader emerging markets universe.
