One in five expects they'll need help with housing. But here's the twist — almost half haven't even had the conversation with their kids yet.

That awkward silence might be masking something bigger: a full-blown generational handoff. After years of bankrolling their children's lives, Gen Xers are now quietly preparing to reverse the roles. Whether it's moving in, cash infusions, or shared expenses, they're bracing for a retirement that won't go by the old rules.
The problem isn't <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/05/45234639/are-you-upper-class-heres-the-net-worth-you-need-in-your-50s">just personal finance</a> — it's systemic. The typical 55-year-old has saved less than $50,000 for retirement. That's a fraction of what's needed, especially for a generation that likely won't see the full benefits of Social Security and didn't get the pensions their parents did. Many also bought homes during the 2000s boom and ended up underwater after the crash, setting back their financial trajectory.
The report explains Gen X is "the first modern generation to confront retirement without full Social Security support, and in most cases without a defined benefit pension plan."

Now they're being squeezed from all sides. As the so-called "sandwich generation," Gen Xers are often supporting both aging parents and grown kids — while still trying to keep up with mortgages, inflation, and rising health care costs. Jessica Lautz, deputy chief economist at the <a href="https://www.nar.realtor/magazine/real-estate-news/the-next-real-estate-trend-silver-squatters">National Association of Realtors</a>, says Gen X was hit hard by the financial crisis and is only now starting to bounce back.
Still, many are adapting in their own way. Nearly 1 in 5 Gen X buyers are opting for multigenerational homes, according to Lautz. Some do it to care for aging relatives. Others simply need help covering the bills. In some cases, multiple incomes in one home help everyone stay afloat. In others, the Gen Xer ends up footing the whole thing.
That mix of support and stress defines the current reality. About a third of those in the sandwich generation say caregiving has either blocked them from buying a home or paying off the one they have, <a href="https://www.realtor.com/news/trends/sandwich-generation-survey-financial-impact-homebuying/">according to a Realtor.com study</a>. But there's a small upside: those who receive help from family are more likely to afford a home and save for retirement, according to Laura Eddy, <a href="http://realtor.com/">Realtor.com</a>'s vice president of research and insight.

Caroline Feeney, CEO of Prudential's U.S. Businesses unit, says it's time to shift the spotlight beyond just baby boomers. "We must also focus on the opportunity to help a slightly younger generation of workers enter the critical 10-year countdown to retirement," she said, pointing out that women in particular face especially uncertain futures.
In other words, Gen X isn't doomed — but the clock is ticking. And if "silver squatting" is going to be the backup plan, someone might want to give the kids a heads-up.

They own a $320,000 home with a $2,000 mortgage. No debt. No splurging. Just a laser focus on saving.
They're contributing 12% of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/45825806/is-your-retirement-nest-egg-above-average-heres-what-people-have-in-their-401k-and-ira-at-each-age">both salaries to Roth 401(k)s</a>, putting $14,000 annually into Roth IRAs, sending $7,000 to a health savings account, allocating 10% of income to an employee stock purchase plan, dropping $420 a week on daycare, and stashing away $3,000 a year for college. After groceries and utilities, they said they're left with just around $50 each per week in spending money.
"Am I over-saving, being cheap, or is this just what upper middle class should look like?" they asked.

Reddit didn't hesitate to answer.
"You're saving a lot lol—that's the reason why," one commenter replied bluntly.
Another was far less amused: "I always see these f&#x2A;&#x2A;ing articles about ‘Families making $200K living paycheck to paycheck!' It's the dumbest clickbait bulls&#x2A;&#x2A;t If you can afford to save a bunch of money toward retirement, you aren't living paycheck to paycheck—you're being smart."
Many users pointed out the difference between feeling broke and actually being broke. "Money isn't actually tight for you," one person said. "You just feel tight because your cash flow is mostly tied up in your savings rate and daycare."
"You're living like a pauper in order to save at a rate that is overkill," another added. "Sure, more is better—but at what cost?"
To be fair, the couple wasn't pretending to be broke. They emphasized they were looking for feedback—not sympathy. Still, the post drew pushback for the title alone: "Upper middle class &#8211; 200k family income but money feels tight."

According to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/09/16/are-you-in-the-american-middle-class/">Pew Research report published in September 2024</a>, middle-income households are defined as earning two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income. That range currently falls between $56,600 and $169,800 for a family of three. Anything above that is considered upper income.
At $210,000, this couple is well above that line. And in Minnesota, the gap is even wider.
The median household income in Minnesota is $86,372, and according to a report by <a href="https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/economy/how-much-you-need-to-earn-to-be-upper-middle-class-in-every-state/">GoBankingRates using U.S. Census Bureau data</a>, the upper-middle class range there starts at $134,357 and tops out at $172,744. Minnesota also ranks 38th in affordability for reaching upper-middle class status—meaning it's not exactly cheap, but it's far from the priciest.
By any national or state-level metric, this couple is not middle class. They're <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/05/45234639/are-you-upper-class-heres-the-net-worth-you-need-in-your-50s">upper income</a>, with savings to match.
But that doesn't mean they're swimming in luxury. Their tight budget is self-imposed—driven by discipline, not scarcity. It's a strategy with trade-offs. As <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/10/41305175/nba-legend-shaq-says-you-should-save-75-of-your-paycheck-its-not-about-how-much-you-make-its-abo">Shaquille O'Neal once said</a>, "It's not about how much money you make. Grocers like RF Buche, who operates the only store on South Dakota&#8217;s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, say the impact could be devastating. &#8220;I&#8217;d just as soon cut a leg off than have my customers out in the poorest county of the United States go without food,&#8221; Buche told Politico. He estimates that 60% to 80% of his shoppers rely on SNAP, which makes up nearly half his revenue.
A study by the <a href="https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2025/mar/how-cuts-medicaid-snap-could-trigger-job-loss-state-revenue">Commonwealth Fund</a> warns that the SNAP cuts will trigger thousands of job losses across agriculture, grocery retail and food processing sectors. As the legislation rolls out, grocery store owners, food bank operators, and families across the U.S. are bracing for a sharp decline in food access. Scams, Lost Keys, and Forgotten Wallets: The Bitcoin Whisperer Who Brings Crypto Back

According to a report, approximately 50,000 officials have reportedly joined a platform led by an opposition figure, aimed at overthrowing the Tehran regime.
What Happened:&nbsp;Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran&#8217;s last monarch, has established a secure platform&nbsp;for regime defectors to register&nbsp;and access information on campaign strategies. 
Launched a month ago, the platform has seen a substantial number of registrations, predominantly from Iran&#8217;s military, paramilitary, and security forces. Pahlavi, often dubbed Iran&#8217;s &#8220;crown prince&#8221; by his followers, mentioned that the registration numbers are still being verified.
As per the report <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/exile-iran-prince-reza-pahlavi-50000-defectors-topple-regime/">by </a>Politico, Pahlavi also stated that a separate website&nbsp;for ordinary Iranian citizens to&nbsp;express&nbsp;their interest in joining the&nbsp;national campaign against the regime will be launched soon. 
"There's tens of thousands, the last estimate is over 50,000 at least, maybe more. Every week we have additional numbers coming. Clearly we have to analyze the data, it's an arduous process, it will take some time, but the signals are quite strong. We have received tremendous response, and of course we are giving top priority to key elements within those designated segments that I mentioned," he told the outlet.

While Pahlavi has expressed his willingness to lead Iran&#8217;s&nbsp;transition to democracy if the&nbsp;Islamic Republic regime falls, critics argue that he has not done enough to unify the various&nbsp;groups within the Iranian opposition&nbsp;during his 46 years in exile.
Why It Matters: The mass defection of officials to Pahlavi&#8217;s platform indicates a growing dissatisfaction with the current regime within Iran&#8217;s official ranks.

Exiled Iranian Prince Reza Pahlavi Claims 50,000 Defectors Have Joined His Movement To Topple Tehran Regime

Meta Platforms Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) has reached a settlement with its shareholders and company leadership, thereby avoiding an $8 billion trial. 
What Happened: This move spares CEO&nbsp;Mark Zuckerberg from testifying about&nbsp;alleged data violations.
The lawsuit was initiated by Meta shareholders against Zuckerberg&nbsp;and other former company officials, including ex-Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. 
The shareholders aimed to hold them accountable&nbsp;for billions of dollars in&nbsp;fines and legal costs the&nbsp;company has incurred in recent years.
Meta shareholders had alleged that&nbsp;current and former officers and&nbsp;directors of Facebook failed to safeguard users&#8217; data, reports Reuters. 
In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission imposed a $5 billion fine on Facebook for not adhering to a 2012 agreement to safeguard users&#8217; data. 
The shareholders demanded&nbsp;the 11 defendants to use&nbsp;their personal wealth to compensate the company. The defendants refuted the allegations, which they dubbed as &#8220;extreme claims&#8221;.

But according to this Reddit user, his mother has been receiving and spending his checks without ensuring the money went toward his care. "She just does what she wants with it," he wrote. He also said she lost or hid his Social Security card, making it harder for him to get an ID and regain control of his finances.

To support a request, a beneficiary may want to gather:

The beneficiary — or anyone aware of the situation — can report it to the Social Security Office of the Inspector General.
While this Reddit user acknowledged others have suggested reporting his mother, he hesitates. "I don't want to see my own mother locked up," he wrote, pointing out that she still has other children in her care.

The user said he doesn't have access to a caseworker or social worker, but he may be able to get help through agencies like Disability Rights organizations or the Department of Human Services in his area. Rather than rush to soothe her, Dave Ramsey got right to the root of what he believes is fueling that discontent.

"This is the problem," Ramsey said. "The millennial, your generation, was one of the first ones to really, really struggle with it."
He was referring to the social media comparison trap—a constant bombardment of filtered, curated glimpses into the seemingly perfect lives of others.
Ramsey explained that in the past, people compared themselves to the Joneses—neighbors with real, visible lives. You saw the new car in the driveway, sure, "but you also saw them have big fights, and you also knew that their kids were messed up."

Hillary mentioned hearing coworkers mention trips to the Bahamas and brand-new Escalades, which left her questioning her own choices.

But Ramsey was quick to set the record straight.
"That Escalade is actually really an amazing car… and 99% chance <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/04/44752907/dave-ramsey-says-if-you-want-to-know-what-driving-a-new-car-really-costs-open-your-car-window-once-a-week-and-toss-out-a-100-bill">that's not real money that bought that</a>."
In fact, had Hillary simply called in and said, "I'm a 33-year-old single female, I make 60 grand, I only have $120,000 left on a house I bought myself," Ramsey said the reaction would've been pure celebration.
"We would be going, touchdown! We would celebrate you as like the model," he told her. "I hope my daughter Josephine is in that kind of situation… You're amazing. You've done a great job. You're doing it right."
Co-host John Delony chimed in, likening Hillary's comparison dilemma to indie filmmaking: "You're the indie filmmaker and all you have is a camera and you're telling real stories, and you can't compete with the Godzilla movies that are made in computer labs."
Hillary admitted she had also just paid cash for her master's degree—something she confessed had her second-guessing the trade-off. "All that money I had saved, I'm just like, that could have been a vacation or a car. I shouldn't have done that."
But Ramsey wasn't having it.

He shared a personal story to drive the point home. At 28, Ramsey was driving a Jaguar—and went broke. What followed was a season of driving a "hooptie," including a beat-up loaner car that was 90% Bondo with a torn vinyl roof that "filled up with air like a parachute" when he drove.
"I used to have to pull up in those hoopties… Meanwhile I'm sitting next to people in nice cars that just got home from the Bahamas, and I'm looking at them going, what am I doing wrong?"
But perspective changed everything.
"Today, if you did that… the average car payment at that stoplight is $750."
As the call wrapped up, Delony offered Hillary a final insight: beneath all the comparison, maybe the real issue was something deeper.
"How much of these videos you're seeing… are reinforcing a sense of loneliness?"
"Probably a lot," Hillary admitted. "Because I feel like they just can go do whatever, you know?"
Delony's advice was simple: "Start creating opportunities to have friends and community and connection and laughter right where you live… and it's going to make the other shiny stuff… not be that big a deal."
Because no matter what TikTok or Instagram tells you, success isn't about Escalades or beach resorts. Sometimes, it's just about being 33, debt-free, and already winning—even if you don't feel like it.

Speaking to the press, he expressed admiration for UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, stating the newly agreed trade deal was &#8220;a win&#8221; for the UK. He noted, &#8220;They&#8217;ve been working on this deal for 12 years, he got it done &#8211; that&#8217;s a good deal, it&#8217;s a good deal for the UK.&#8221;
Trump also praised First Minister John Swinney of Scotland ahead of their meeting, which will take place Monday.

Turning to migration, Trump described illegal immigration in Europe as an &#8220;invasion,&#8221; and said the continent faces cultural and economic risks if current policies continue.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves called the visit a &#8220;tangible benefit,&#8221; highlighting its economic benefits to Scotland, from Scotch whisky exports to defense partnerships.
