Lucid Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) and Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) inspired GraniteShares to launch two new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">exchange-traded funds</a>.
What Happened: In the latest fuel for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/electric-vehicle">EV-thematic investors</a>, GraniteShares unveiled two <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">single-stock ETFs</a>. They&#8217;re designed to return 2x the day&#8217;s return of their respective underlying stocks.
This means when Lucid has a decent hair day in the market, the GraniteShares 2x Long LCID Daily ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCDL#NASDAQ">LCDL</a>) attempts to double down on it. 
Similarly, when Rivian gets revs up, the GraniteShares 2x Long RIVN Daily ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RVNL#NASDAQ">RVNL</a>) seeks to floor it.

Why It Matters: Lucid, with its luxury sedans and in-house battery technology, cut a niche in the premium EV market. Its cars are designed and built in California and feature fresh styling and serious range.
Rivian, on the other hand, is more rugged with its R1T pickup and R1S SUV, not to mention its high-profile Electric Delivery Van (EDV) fleet. The company is also made and based in the U.S., targeting consumers and commercial customers who want environmentally friendly transport.
Both stocks have recently experienced a rough ride, making them good targets for traders wagering on short-term rebounds—or reversals.
Other ETFs To Watch: It&#8217;s worth noting that GraniteShares&#8217; LCDL and RVNL ETFs are not for Sunday drivers. They are designed for pit-stop traders who have an iron stomach and are watching the daily ticker.

GraniteShares Unleashes 2x Lucid And Rivian ETFs, But Are DRIV And IDRV The Smarter EV Plays?

As President Donald Trump&#8216;s auto tariffs pulled the markets down on Wednesday, he shrugged off the selloff worries, saying that markets can &#8220;take care of itself&#8221;.
What Happened: During the press briefing on Wednesday, Trump was asked about the market fall after a three-day advance as the newly introduced auto tariffs stoked another round of decline in the equities.
Responding to the question, Trump said that he wants to &#8220;see jobs&#8221; and he wasn&#8217;t concerned about the stock market.
&#8220;That can take care of itself in one day, two days, or one week,&#8221; he added.

The administration counters that automakers have excess capacity for domestic production and were aware of potential tariffs. Under USMCA, the 25% tariff affects only non-U.S. content in autos and parts from Mexico and Canada. 
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump did not rule out the likelihood of a recession and said the economy was in a "period of transition."

Trump Reacts To Selloff Following Auto Tariffs: 'That Can Take Care Of Itself In One Day, Two Days, Or One Week'

KoBold Metals, a startup backed by billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, has approached the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) government with an offer to develop one of the world's largest hard rock <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/lithium" rel="noreferrer noopener">lithium mines</a>.
The mining startup looks to take over the disputed mining license for the Roche Dure deposit, taking advantage of the two governments' discussions about a potential <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44216408/dr-congo-explores-a-minerals-for-security-deal-with-the-us" rel="noreferrer noopener">minerals-for-security partnership</a>.
KoBold's bid could resolve an ongoing dispute between Australia's AVZ Minerals and China's Zijin Mining Group. AVZ, which previously controlled the lithium project, lost its rights in 2023 when the government split the permit, handing part of it to Zijin. Per Bloomberg's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-21/kobold-makes-offer-for-congo-lithium-as-country-courts-us" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, KoBold's proposal involves compensating AVZ and acquiring the remaining stake while allowing Zijin to maintain control over the northern section of the deposit.
Despite an 80% decline in lithium prices since a peak in 2022, Zijin has actively expanded its operations, acting greedy when others are fearful in anticipation of a future demand and price rebound.
Meanwhile, KoBold staked its claim as a unique company in this industry, using a proprietary AI-powered technology that analyzes geological data more accurately than traditional exploration methods.
This tech-driven approach has attracted over $400 million in funding from high-profile investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures (founded by Gates) and Bezos' Bezos Expeditions.
Arguably, the company's best success has been in neighboring Zambia, where it found the Mingomba asset – possibly the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36940360/kobold-metals-announces-historic-copper-discovery-in-zambia" rel="noreferrer noopener">best copper asset in the country</a>. Experts believe that once operational in the early 2030s, it could rival Zijin's Kamoa-Kakula mine in DRC, which produced almost 400,000 tons of copper in 2023.
While DRC is the world's largest producer of cobalt, lithium extraction in the country has lagged behind other regions, such as Australia and South America.
Roche Dure could change the balance, placing the country on the map of major battery-grade lithium producers, as KoBold's interest aligns with the effort to bring this region closer under U.S. influence and pacify the unrest that threatens mineral production.
Still, extraction of hard rock lithium requires extensive open-pit excavation. This traditional method generates significantly more waste rock, consumes vast amounts of water, and uses toxic chemicals in processing, posing greater risks to local ecosystems and communities. Yet, in anticipation of lithium demand, companies are increasingly looking for large-scale projects.
KoBold Metals remains a private company, but CEO Josh Goldman told CNBC a year ago that it plans to go public within three to four years.

Betting On Uber's Driverless Future? These ETFs Could Pay Off

After President Donald Trump delayed the tariffs on automobile companies that comply with USMCA rules last week, the tariffs on carmakers were inevitable due to the high magnitude of imports, explained CNBC&#8217;s Jim Cramer in an X post.
What Happened: The Trump administration provided a one-month exemption to the automakers following the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, negotiated during his first term. These included automotive parts, accessories, and other supplier products along with completed vehicles.
As a one-month relief helped companies to chalk out their business plans, Cramer said that &#8220;Tariffs on cars are and have been expected,&#8221; as more than half the cars sold in the U.S. are imports and the tariffs on them are very small.

Apart from this, while speaking at a CNBC's event Converge Live, in Singapore, the chairperson of Alibaba Group Holding ADR (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>), Joseph Tsai also acknowledged that "Everyone is concerned about tariffs."
He noted that even if Trump's tariff strategy was merely a negotiation tactic, there was still a strong possibility of targeted tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44272657/alibaba-chairperson-says-everyone-is-concerned-about-tariffs-as-he-expects-levies-on-chinese-evs">Tsai</a> further suggested that this could be an effort to protect the American auto industry from potential competition.

Why It Matters: While foreign carmakers Volkswagen and Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) were in compliance with USMCA rules and received the one-month extension, BMW did not meet the criteria for exemption.
The &#8216;Big 3&#8217; Detroit automakers, which included General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and Chrysler, which is now part of Stellantis, were also exempt from importing parts.
However, apart from the tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, on Wednesday, the Trump administration imposed sweeping tariffs on steel and auto imports, which will also affect the carmakers in the U.S. The European Union, impacted by these latest tariffs, responded within hours by imposing counter-duties on U.S. exports.
Glenn Stevens, who is the executive director at MICHauto, an automotive, mobility, and technology association, criticized Trump&#8217;s threat on Canada to shut down its auto industry. He said that the tariffs were &#8220;hampering and damaging the free trade bloc that currently operates as the USMCA.&#8221;

The United States is considering a potential partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to secure access to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical minerals</a>, following discussions initiated by a senior Congolese official.
According <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/3f638e29-4790-4a10-b5b7-a79f9ef55491" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> the Financial Times, the DRC proposed a minerals-for-security deal, offering valuable resources for military support to address ongoing conflict in the region, particularly with the M23 rebel group who seized control of eastern parts of the North Kivu province.
President Felix Tshisekedi recently hinted at the deal in an interview for the New York Times, while a State Department spokesperson confirmed the situation.
"The DRC is endowed with a significant share of the world's critical minerals required for advanced technologies. The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that align with the Trump administration's America First agenda," they said.
The DRC has significant mineral resources, including cobalt, lithium, copper, and tantalum. It is a global leader in cobalt production, supplying over 70% of the metal's production. Cobalt is essential for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies.
Still, its status has been problematic, as declining prices forced foreign operators like the Chinese miner MMG to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/03/44168899/mmg-pauses-cobalt-production-in-congo-as-price-hits-historic-lows" rel="noreferrer noopener">pause production</a>. Meanwhile, the government implemented a four-month export ban to stabilize the oversupplied market.
On top of illegal mining and smuggling, escalating armed conflicts are likely the main catalyst for ongoing talks with Washington. The M23 rebel group, allegedly backed by neighboring Rwanda, has seized significant territory in the eastern part of the country, threatening mineral-rich territory.
Since the conflict has also drawn in neighboring Burundi and Uganda, the situation risks escalating into a full-scale regional conflict.
While a deal with the U.S. would stabilize the region, in exchange, the U.S. would gain access to critical minerals and reduce reliance on Chinese-dominated supply chains.
China controls most of the DRC's mining sector through the state-owned MMG. Washington could seize this opportunity to reduce Beijing's influence while securing resources for its industrial needs.
Yet, a deal between Washington and Kinhasa is a tall order. The political climate in Kinshasa is volatile, and past foreign mining agreements in the DRC have faced criticism over transparency issues.

DR Congo Explores Minerals-For-Security Deal With The US

A new study said Germany could have enough lithium to meet its long-term domestic needs. Sourcing domestic <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities" rel="noreferrer noopener">commodities</a> would help its weakened automotive industry reduce reliance on imports – a welcome development in a deglobalized environment.
The study by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources and the Fraunhofer IEG Institute notes the potential of lithium extraction from deep underground waters.
Germany's reliance on lithium imports is notable. In 2023, the country imported €23.7 billion ($25.72 billion) worth of batteries, of which lithium-ion batteries accounted for 86%, according to the trade group ZVEI. Meanwhile, the German Raw Materials Agency estimates that, by 2030, the domestic demand will reach 170,000 metric tons of lithium annually.
According to Reuters, the study estimates that Germany holds up to 26.51 million metric tons of lithium, particularly in the North German Basin and the Central Thuringian Basin.
Much of this lithium could be extracted as a byproduct of geothermal energy production, offering a dual benefit of sustainable energy and critical mineral supply. Major corporations, including ExxonMobil (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>), have shown interest, with Exxon's subsidiary Esso Deutschland securing four exploration licenses in Lower Saxony.
Katharina Alms, the research leader at Fraunhofer IEG, told Reuters the development shows that surprisingly high lithium resources might be dormant underground.
Still, she acknowledged that variations in concentration levels and technical difficulties associated with extraction with low-permeability rock formations pose difficulties.
However, lithium dissolved in brine allows for direct lithium extraction (DLE). This method is more environmentally friendly than traditional evaporation ponds in places like Chile and Argentina, which require vast water and land.
Those necessities put one of the largest global greenfield lithium projects on hold, as Serbia's Jadar project contains lithium in mineral form. Rio Tinto's plans for pursuing traditional extraction methods faced protests over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/10/41289306/serbian-parliament-doesnt-pass-lithium-ban-keeps-rio-tintos-major-project-alive" rel="noreferrer noopener">fears of ecological damage</a> despite assurances of compliance with environmental regulations.
Yet, the DLE process reduces waste and speeds up lithium extraction, making it a more viable long-term solution that is more likely to pass Germany's regulatory hurdles, which, according to the OECD's analysis, rank among<a target="_blank" href="https://www.oecd.org/content/dam/oecd/en/topics/policy-sub-issues/economic-policies-to-foster-green-growth/how-stringent-are-environmental-policies.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener"> the most stringent</a> in the developed world.

President Donald Trump went through with his plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico. This tariff, along with that on Canada (25%) and China (10%), goes into effect on Saturday. This move is expected to impact companies that rely heavily on Mexican car parts. 
Automakers such as General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) export vehicles from its Mexican plant to North America, according to a Reuters report. The report also suggested that other U.S. auto manufacturers likely to take a hit are Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>), which are among the top U.S. producers in Mexico. 
Needless to say, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">ETFs focusing on the automotive sector</a> are facing significant challenges. Here are three such ETFs that are in focus right now:

Companies such as General Motors and Ford are part of its portfolio. <h1 class="wp-block-heading">Impact Of The Proposed Tariffs</h1>
In November last year, Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote in a note that Volkswagen, Stellantis, General Motors and Ford would be the hardest hit. "A 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada would severely cripple the U.S. auto industry," he said.
An earlier <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-prices-inflation-mexico-canada-d44aa0715a649998195fc3211e9ab7a3">report </a>from the Associated Press said that General Motors imports approximately 30% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. About 55% of their popular pickup trucks also are imported from Mexico and Canada. The bottom line of General Motors and other automakers are expected to be affected.
According to International Trade Administration, Mexico is the world&#8217;s seventh-largest passenger vehicle <a href="https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/mexico-automotive-industry#:~:text=Leading%20Sub%2DSectors%20and%20Opportunities,Tech%20Top%20Export%20Market%20Ranking.">manufacturer</a>, producing 3.5 million vehicles annually. Eighty-eight percent of vehicles produced in Mexico are exported, of which 76% come to the U.S.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Deep Integration Of North American Auto Supply Chains</h1>
Decades of free trade have deeply integrated the automotive industries of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. According to <a href="https://www.cato.org/blog/seven-charts-show-how-us-tariffs-would-harm-american-auto-industry#:~:text=Mexico%20and%20Canada%20Are%20the,%2C%22%20US%20International%20Trade%20Commission.">research </a>from the Cato Institute, Mexico and Canada together account for nearly half of U.S. imports and exports of motor vehicles and parts. 
This means that a tariff increase wouldn't just raise costs for American consumers and manufacturers — it could also trigger retaliatory actions from Mexico and Canada, potentially reducing U.S. car exports.
Also, vehicles assembled in Mexico often contain a high percentage of American-made components. A 2019 study found that nearly 74% of the foreign value-added in cars imported from Mexico came from the U.S. Another analysis from the Peterson Institute for International Economics estimated that 38% of the total value-added of vehicles imported from Mexico was American-made. If Mexico retaliates, this can spell bad news for the U.S. as well.
Simply put, slapping a 25% tariff on cars &#8220;made in Mexico&#8221; could inadvertently harm U.S. workers and businesses involved in supplying these vehicles. 
The stakes of the disruption of an already intertwined supply chain is quite high. Investors invested in such ETFs should keep a close eye on developments, and keep in mind that the tariffs could weigh heavy on the profitability of the underlying companies.

ETFs heavily leaning toward <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/electric-vehicles">U.S.-based EV makers</a>, such as Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>) and iShares Self-Driving EV and Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IDRV#NYSE">IDRV</a>), are staring at potential headwinds, given their significant exposures to stocks of companies directly in the line of fire. Companies like Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>), and Lucid (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>), which could see reduced consumer demand if federal tax credits are repealed.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tesla's Unique Position</h3>
Here&#8217;s an interesting point to ponder. Tesla, a major constituent in most EV-focused ETFs, was up1.08% on Jan. 22 as of writing, despite the policy changes. CEO Elon Musk, who funded Trump&#8217;s presidential campaign, agreed with the 47th president on ending subsidies. 
Removal of tax credits would have<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39934750/trump-presidency-and-ira-cut-would-be-devastating-for-competitors-says-elon-musk-long-term-probably"> only a slight impact on Tesla </a>but could be a major jolt to competitors reliant on subsidies, Musk says. This means Tesla can either be a potential beneficiary or in a position of disadvantage. ETFs with significant Tesla weightings like ARK Innovation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKK#NYSE">ARKK</a>) and First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index Fund (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCLN#NASDAQ">QCLN</a>).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Behavior And Long-Term Talk</h3>
The potential repeal of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit could shift consumer interest back to gasoline-powered vehicles, particularly in the luxury segment. Tesla researcher <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42641207/researcher-says-cancelation-of-7500-ev-tax-credit-could-impact-teslas-deliveries-despite-ceo-elon-musk-claiming-otherwise">Troy Teslike warned</a> that Tesla could lose market share to gas-powered luxury brands if tax credits are eliminated. Trump's EV Rollback Might Shake-Up ETFs: Winners, Losers And Tesla's Unique Role In Shifting Market

XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) shares are rising on Tuesday, driven by positive sentiment toward U.S.-listed Chinese stocks after President Donald Trump&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43101141/chinese-stocks-rally-after-trump-skips-tariff-threats-boosting-market-optimism" rel="noreferrer noopener">inauguration speech.</a>
In a move signaling growth, XPeng announced plans to open a new headquarters in Guangzhou this August, CnEV Post <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/01/20/xpeng-to-open-new-hq-building-guangzhou-aug/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
The new office space will support the company&#8217;s hiring goals as it plans to expand its workforce by thousands this year.

What's Going On With XPeng Stock Tuesday?

Saudi Arabia has unveiled a joint venture between the state oil company Aramco and the state mining company Ma'aden. The collaboration focuses on extracting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/lithium" rel="noreferrer noopener">lithium</a>, a vital component in batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy storage, and electronics. Commercial production is expected by 2027.
"We expect that this partnership will leverage the world's leading upstream enterprise to apply significant low-cost advantages, industry experience, technological innovation, and an integrated supply chain ecosystem," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aramco.com/en/news-media/news/2025/aramco-plans-transition-minerals-jv-with-maaden" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Nasir K. Al-Naimi, Aramco's upstream president.
The venture aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, an ambitious economic transformation plan designed to reduce dependency on oil by developing sectors like mining, technology, and renewable energy.
Vision 2030 targets unlocking $2.5 trillion of mineral resources, including lithium, copper, and gold, while increasing mining's GDP contribution from $17 billion to $64 billion.
Demand for lithium has surged due to the global shift toward green energy. According to Aramco, domestic lithium needs could increase twenty-fold by 2030, supporting the production of 500,000 EV batteries and 110 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.
The new joint venture aims to explore direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies and tap into high-concentration deposits within the region. In contrast to traditional evaporation methods, DLE bypasses the need for lithium ponds, allowing faster extraction rates, minimized environmental impact, and reduced water consumption, which are crucial factors in arid climates.
The project also builds on Saudi Arabia's first successful lithium extraction from oilfield brine last December, which was conducted in collaboration with a local startup, Lihytec. Ma'aden is making strides in other commodities, unveiling promising gold and copper deposits at Wadi Al Jaww and Jabal Shayban.
Ma'aden CEO Bob Wilt <a target="_blank" href="https://www.maaden.com.sa/en/news/details/602" rel="noreferrer noopener">noted</a> that these findings are part of one of the world's largest single-jurisdiction exploration programs. "We are committed to establishing mining as the third pillar of the Saudi economy, in line with Vision 2030," he stated.
Strengthening domestic copper production is a priority since the country imports most of its copper—365,000 tons annually. While this demand could double by 2035, the country might secure some of this increasingly important metal from Pakistan as it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/24/04/38336936/saudi-arabia-near-deal-for-stake-in-gold-copper-mine-project-in-pakistans-troubled-province" rel="noreferrer noopener">evaluates a stake</a> in Barrick Gold's Reko Diq project.

Saudi Arabia Advances Lithium Plans, Looks Beyond Oil For Commodity Diversification

Several exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, allow investors to track the stocks of electric vehicle manufacturers, including Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) or its China-based competitors, Nio Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>), Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) and BYD (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>).

Why It Matters: S&amp;P Global Mobility expects 15.1 million battery electric vehicles to be sold in 2025. That&#8217;s a 30% increase from 2024. 
EVs are likely to account for 16.7% of global light vehicle sales in 2025, with China leading at 29.7% market share.
Tesla reported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42782683/tesla-hits-record-ev-sales-in-china-despite-global-dip">record EV sales</a> in December. For the year, the EV-maker's China sales reached 657,000 vehicles—an 8.8% on-year increase. These numbers reveal that China remains critical for Tesla, contributing around 40% of its global deliveries in Q4.
Tesla's deepening foothold in China has also spurred a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42761825/ev-price-war-heats-up-as-chinese-automakers-extend-subsidies">competitive battle of sorts involving prices</a>. The Austin, Texas-based company made the smart move of putting a 10,000-yuan discount on Model Y loans through December. This prompted Nio and Li Auto to follow suit with zero-interest loans and cash subsidies. 
Nio's December sales spiked 72.9% year-over-year while Li Auto posted a 16.2% increase.
BYD, for its part, offered up to 11.5% discounts and reaped the rewards in the form of a 50% year-over-year jump in December sales of new energy passenger vehicles.
XPeng, meanwhile, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/12/42737888/tesla-rival-xpeng-to-hire-over-6000-workers-in-2025-expecting-increased-competition-report">plans to onboard over 6,000 employees</a> in 2025, Reuters reported. Anticipating intensified pricing pressures starting January, the company is also strategizing global expansion schemes, aiming to tap over 60 international markets by 2025.
This competition brings us to a broader trend: China expects to sell over 12 million EVs in 2025, doubling 2022 figures, and Tesla increasingly seeking a bigger piece of the pie.
Analyst Daniel Ives of Wedbush remains optimistic on Tesla. He predicts 20%-30% delivery growth in 2025 and maintains an "Outperform" rating with a $515 price target.

Global EV Sales Poised To Grow In 2025: 3 ETFs In Focus

KoBold Metals, the AI-driven mining startup backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, has secured $537 million in its Series C funding round. The latest funding round gives the Berkeley-based company a valuation of $2.96 billion and fresh capital to pursue ambitious goals in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical minerals sector</a>.
Durable Capital Partners LP and T. Rowe Price funds led the round, alongside contributions from existing investors such as Andreessen Horowitz Growth, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and Mitsubishi Corporation, as well as new players like StepStone Group and WCM Investment Management.
This latest injection brings KoBold's total fundraising to $1 billion. The funds will accelerate exploration, develop high-potential projects, and enhance its R&amp;D capabilities.
KoBold's innovative approach relies on artificial intelligence to locate deposits of vital minerals such as copper, cobalt, lithium, and nickel. The company's proprietary technology aggregates data from sources like satellite imagery and historical drilling reports to create a detailed "Google Maps" of the Earth's crust, pinpointing untapped resources that traditional methods might miss.
Using this technology, KoBold discovered a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36940360/kobold-metals-announces-historic-copper-discovery-in-zambia" rel="noreferrer noopener">substantial copper deposit</a> in Zambia's Copperbelt. The Dumbwa target, part of the Solwezi project, exhibited promising results, including drilling highlights of 16 meters at 1.24% copper. KoBold's $2 billion Mingomba site is set to produce at least 300,000 tons annually by 2030, making it Zambia's largest copper operation.
"About 40% of the new capital will go toward advancing existing projects into production, with Zambia receiving the lion's share," KoBold's CEO and co-founder Kurt House <a target="_blank" href="https://www.koboldmetals.com/news/mining-startup-kobold-metals-valued-at-2-96-bn-after-closing-537m-series-c/?aid=01" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> to the Financial Times.
With 60 active projects across continents, including partnerships with mining giants like BHP and Rio Tinto, the firm is ready to reshuffle the industry. House noted they plan to aggressively expand the team, particularly seeking data scientists, while expanding into new jurisdictions such as Finland and Botswana. The company also aims to go public within three to five years.
Despite changes in U.S. political leadership, House expressed confidence in bipartisan support for critical mineral initiatives. "There is very broad bipartisan support for diversifying [the] supply of critical minerals because this is a national security priority," he said.
U.S. foreign policy is aiding companies like KoBold. President Joe Biden's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/24/10/41416913/bidens-farewell-to-africa-strategic-motives-behind-first-and-only-presidential-visit" rel="noreferrer noopener">last official trip</a> to Angola discussed revitalizing the Lobito railway line to facilitate mineral transport across Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The global lithium market is set to remain oversupplied, keeping the prices depressed, but this challenging situation for commodity producers could help battery makers ease the transition to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/electric-vehicles" rel="noreferrer noopener">electric vehicles(EVs)</a>.
Lithium prices have plummeted after soaring to $80,000 per ton in 2022, now trading below $10,000 per ton. The surplus stems from weaker-than-expected EV sales, aggressive production expansions, and strategic commitments by Chinese operators to maintain dominance in the global battery supply chain.
"There are some assets in production that shouldn't really be, but for their own reasons, they're ploughing on," said Martin Jackson, head of battery raw materials at CRU. Reuters <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/lithium-supply-surplus-set-stay-with-battery-makers-help-2024-12-10/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> his estimate that about 10% of global lithium production is currently unprofitable.
According to the Reuters report, UBS forecasts a 25% increase in global lithium supply this year, with the surplus expected to persist until 2027. Meanwhile, S&amp;P Global projects prices to stabilize between $9,900 and $11,600 per ton until 2026.
Driven by Beijing's ambition to dominate the market, Chinese companies remain a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/06/39477524/exclusive-china-linked-lithium-volatility-a-headache-for-producers-but-a-win-for-retail-inves" rel="noreferrer noopener">key factor in lithium production</a>. Production persists in Australia, Africa, and South America even at high operational costs, as China has to ensure a steady supply to support its rising EV industry.
In the U.S., lithium producers are also adapting to market pressures. ExxonMobil (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/contracts/24/11/42087743/exxon-mobils-lithium-leap-100000-metric-tons-to-fuel-lg-chems-us-plant" rel="noreferrer noopener">has partnered with</a> LG Chem to secure lithium for a cathode production facility in Tennessee, aiming to become the largest of its kind in the country. Yet, despite the tailwind from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Donald Trump's second mandate could bring potential rollbacks. On top of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39870803/us-mine-development-delays-among-worlds-longest-second-only-to-zambia" rel="noreferrer noopener">permitting delays</a>, his policy shift could slow domestic progress.
Major producers like SQM (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SQM#NYSE">SQM</a>) have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/insights/earnings/24/11/42036495/a-peek-at-sociedad-quimica-y-mineras-future-earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">suffered significantly</a>, with the company reporting a 73% decline in quarterly profits despite record sales volumes. Yet, the industry remains optimistic about long-term prospects. If the EV adoption accelerates, analysts see prices recovering above $14,500 per ton.
Still, some lithium operators are set to prosper even at current prices. Volt Lithium, a Canadian firm focusing on direct lithium extraction (DLE), has agreed with Wellspring Hydro to deploy a field unit in North Dakota.
With a worst-case-scenario extraction price of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/06/39480795/exclusive-volt-lithium-ceo-touts-6b-cash-flow-opportunity" rel="noreferrer noopener">$2,900 per ton of lithium</a>, Volt will test its technology at the <a target="_blank" href="https://voltlithium.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/12-10-2024-North-Dakota-Field-Study-Agreement-Final-.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-largest domestic brine production</a>. The firm already has DLE operations in the Permian basin in Texas and the Keg River formation in its native Alberta.

Lithium Producers Brace For Prolonged Oversupply, Stalled Prices

XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading lower on Tuesday.</a>
Shares of U.S.-listed Chinese stocks are trading lower after China&#8217;s September exports missed estimates. Concerns over the effectiveness of&nbsp;China&#8217;s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/10/41329479/alibaba-nio-jd-com-and-other-us-listed-china-stocks-tumble-as-investors-await-clarity-on-fiscal-stim" rel="noreferrer noopener">latest stimulus measures</a> have also rattled investors.
According to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>, XPEV stock has lost over 25% in the past year. Investors can gain exposure to the stock via Invesco WilderHill Clean Energy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PBW#NYSE">PBW</a>) and Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>).
The electric vehicle maker saw its stock decline alongside other Chinese companies, amid doubts that&nbsp;Beijing&#8217;s recent economic support package will significantly boost growth.

Meanwhile, XPeng&#8217;s latest electric sedan, the P7+, is reportedly receiving positive early feedback, as evidenced by robust pre-order figures.
Within just 1 hour and 48 minutes of starting pre-sales, orders for the P7+ exceeded 30,000 units, <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/10/15/xpeng-p7-plus-30000-pre-orders-2-hours/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> CnEV Post, citing an announcement on Weibo.
Xpeng launched the model for European consumers in Paris, France. The company also announced that pre-sales for the model have commenced in China, with a starting price of RMB 209,800 ($29,600).
The pre-sale starting price of the P7+ is RMB 22,100, or 9.5% lower than the RMB 231,900 starting price of Tesla&#8217;s Model 3 in China, the report read.
However, Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng stated that the model is designed to compete with vehicles in the RMB 300,000 price range, CnEV Post added.
The P7+ is a mid-to-large electric sedan measuring 5,056 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,512 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase, which makes it bigger than the Xpeng P7i sedan.
Price Action: XPEV shares are trading lower by 2.28% to $11.38 at last check Tuesday.

What's Going On With XPeng Stock Today?

Researchers at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics in China have achieved a major breakthrough in battery technology, which could potentially influence the future of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/electric-vehicles">electric vehicles (EVs).</a>
The team, led by professors Zhang Changkun and Li Xianfang, developed new naphthalene-based organic redox-active molecules (ORAMs) for aqueous organic flow batteries (AOFBs). These molecules provide unprecedented stability, significantly extending batteries&#8217; lifespan.
Lab results showed the new battery retained 99.95% of its capacity over 600 charge cycles, <a href="https://interestingengineering.com/energy/novel-molecules-organic-flow-batteries">per</a> Interesting Engineering's report. While traditional flow batteries often depend on costly vanadium and experience degradation through side reactions with external elements – new ORAMs make AOFBs more durable, cost-effective, and easier to scale.
Improving battery durability and stability has been crucial for EVs to replace fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, but China is already at the forefront.
Earlier this year, Tesla's key battery supplier, CATL, introduced the Shenxing Plus battery pack at the Auto China Show. This battery offers a 370-mile range on a 10-minute charge and over 620 miles on a full charge, addressing the industry&#8217;s lingering <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38430695/tesla-supplier-catl-unveils-new-battery-capable-of-powering-evs-for-620-miles-on-full-charge">concerns over range anxiety</a>.
Besides range anxiety, fire risk remains a point of criticism. EV car fire videos go <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/09/41101369/tesla-ev-fire-in-garage-goes-viral-during-hurricane-helene-while-cybertruck-owners-engage-w">viral every month,</a> but South Korean tech giant LG is working on a solution.
Its subsidiary, LG Chem, the largest Korean chemical company, announced a breakthrough in EV fire prevention through a "Safety Reinforced Layer." This thin composite material, placed between the cathode and current collector, works to stop fires by preventing thermal runaway. The material chemically disrupts the circuit when temperatures exceed a safe range, essentially working as a self-extinguishing fuse within the battery.
"This is a tangible research achievement that can be applied to mass production in a short period of time," CTO Lee Jong-gu<a href="https://www.lgcorp.com/media/release/28190"> said</a> in a press release.
The new material dramatically reduces the chance of EV fires and could pave the way for safer battery packs by 2025 when large-scale testing concludes. If successful, this innovation will address one of consumers&#8217; most significant concerns about EVs, further accelerating adoption.
Earlier this year, LG Chem signed a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/02/36984442/general-motors-shifts-gears-strikes-19b-pact-with-lg-chem-for-fueling-ev-dream">$19b deal</a> with General Motors (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) to supply EV batteries through 2035.

The Democratic National Convention kicks off Monday in Chicago and includes a highly anticipated speech from President Joe Biden, who stepped aside from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/2024-election">2024 presidential election. &nbsp;</a>
Here's a look at Monday's key speakers and what investors should know.
Biden's Speech: Biden will headline the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/08/40429245/2024-dnc-preview-democrats-to-rally-around-harris-walz-with-biden-obamas-clintons-and-more-will-">first night of the DNC</a> with a primetime speech emphasizing why Vice President Kamala Harris is fit to be president.
One of the themes of Biden&#8217;s speech is expected to be leadership and putting America above the president's own interest, the Democratic convention committee said in a statement viewed by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/19/dnc-2024-live-updates-day-1.html">CNBC</a>.
"While Donald Trump puts himself first, Democrats are fighting for the American people," the Democratic convention committee said.
First Lady Jill Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are also set to deliver prime time speeches Monday, as reported by CNBC.
The Bidens will leave Chicago Monday night for a vacation in California, according to the report. The president will not be on hand for a speech from former President Barack Obama or to officially see Harris accept the nomination on Thursday.

Health care could be a big focus Monday night alongside abortion rights.
Three women who had high-risk pregnancies will speak during the first day of DNC events Monday, as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/19/us/politics/harris-dnc-abortion-rights.html">reported </a>by the New York Times.
Each of the women faced hardships due to state abortion bans and the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022.

Abortion rights could be a theme of all four nights of the DNC, according to the report, making it one of the biggest election issues highlighted by the Democratic Party at the convention.
Harris' focus on health care costs could put a spotlight on stocks in the sector. Investors could see health care stocks come under pressure if Harris is elected president, which could impact ETFs like the SPDR Select Sector Fund – Health Care (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VHT#NYSE">VHT</a>).

The Democratic Party ticket could highlight their contrasting opinion on electric cars now that Vice President Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. What Happened: A 2024 presidential election win for Trump could benefit Tesla, considering the GOP nominee has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39804113/exclusive-elon-musk-is-burning-his-own-blue-bridges-by-donating-to-trump-says-market-expert">a friendly relationship</a> with Musk.

That&#8217;s something investors need to know ahead of the 2024 election, especially since Trump — at least <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40154264/trump-says-electric-cars-are-fantastic-after-tesla-ceo-elon-musks-endorsement-i-have-to-be-you-know">before Musk&#8217;s endorsement</a> — often denigrated electric vehicles. 
Walz, like Harris, has been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/07/39918749/kamala-harris-vs-trump-views-on-nearly-every-industry-evs-oil-gas-health-care-are-worlds-apart">positive on electric vehicles</a>. A win for the Democratic Party in November would likely continue tax credits and ramp up electrification.
Under Walz, Minnesota became the first in the Midwest and one of 17 states to back the emission standards set by California, as <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/729259/tim-walz-ev-advocate/">reported </a>by InsideEVs.
"Minnesotans certainly know that old adage, ‘you need to skate where the puck is going to be,'" Walz <a href="https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-adopts-clean-cars-standard-that-require-more-electric-vehicles/600081556">told </a>reporters back in 2021. "The puck is going to be in EVs. And that is irrefutable."
While serving as the Minnesota governor, Walz has advocated for both EV and hybrid vehicle adoption. His policies faced challenges from automotive dealers in the state, who attempted to sue the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for alleged overreach.
Minnesota is currently advocating for electric vehicles to represent 20% of new car sales by 2030.

Why It's Important: The auto industry could face a huge setback if Trump is elected as he could undue years of investment on the transition to electric vehicles, InsideEVs reports. 
Companies like Ford Motor Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and General Motors Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) have spent years investing billions of dollars on the transition to EVs and building new factories and models that can appeal to customers. 
Musk's support of Trump could also have a negative impact on Tesla stock with a win by the former president in the election potentially setting the whole sector back.
It <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40212204/tesla-loses-this-major-european-customer-after-elon-musk-endorses-trump-for-president">was recently reported</a> that European pharmacy chain Rossman decided to stop buying Tesla vehicles due to the Trump endorsement by Musk.
"Trump has repeatedly described climate change as a hoax — this attitude is in stark contrast to Tesla's mission to contribute to environmental protection through the production of electric cards," Rossman spokesperson Raoul Rossman said.
Rossman represents a small customer of Tesla totaling around 38 annual vehicles, but the decision by management could show that Musk's endorsement could hurt the company if more customers pull their sales and partnerships.
With the 2024 election expected to be close, investors are likely torn on whether they should be investing aggressively in electric vehicle stocks before the results are decided.
Two potential winners from a Harris/Walz win could be the KraneShares Electric Vehicle and Future Mobility Index ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KARS#NYSE">KARS</a>) and the Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>).
The ETFs hold a basket of stocks in the electric vehicle sector and could benefit from Harris continuing the policies already put in place during Joe Biden's time in office.
